The last 16 big upsets yesterday are the Li Xuerui and Matsutomo/Takahashi defeats. Both top-seeds were sent packing early by Akane Yamaguchi and Lee SH/Shin SC respectively. The other surprising outcome were, both fourth seeds Srikanth Kidambi (men’s singles) and Tai Tzu Ying (ladies singles) also ending their campaign, stunned by the qualifiers Ginting and Fanetri respectively. A great result by the home Indonesian singles players to book 2 spots each for the men’s singles and ladies singles in tehe quarterfinals.
Many surprises have happened in the men’s singles discipline with five seeded players failing to go further and only three of top eight seeds left. Strong favourite, Chen Long will take on Indian Kashyap Parupalli; both Jorgensen and Momota will be up against the qualifiers and promising talents, Jonatan Christie and Anthony Ginting. The underdogs will be fully supported by a charged whole crowd boosting motivation and hopefully performing beyond expectations. Jorgensen and Momota must be mentally strong to face both opponents and the crowd. One quarterfinal tie at the bottom half will pit Kenichi Tago (who recently has had a string of poor results) against the never give up Marc Zwiebler. Both players were runners up here in 2014 and 2013 respectively.
With Carolina Marin and Li Xuerui ousted, on paper Saina Nehwal, Ratchanok Intanon, Wang Yihan and Wang Shixian will be looking for the ladies singles crown. Japanese teen sensation Yamaguchi will meet Wang Yihan to chase the semifinal ticket while her compatriot the giant-killer Yui Hashimoto gets Maria Febe. In an intriguing clash, it will be Wang SX v Nehwal part two after the Australian Open last week. Home hopeful Fanetri will be up against former world champion, Intanon.
There are four men’s doubles duels with defending champion Lee YD/Yoo YS will again face Chai B/Hong W in a repeat of the Australian Open semifinal last week, . In a 2015 All England final rematch, Boe/Mogensen v Fu HF/Zhang N and two home combos Ahsan/Setiawan and Wahyu Nayaka/Yusuf will up against Japanese #1 Endo/Hayakawa and reigning world champion Ko SH/Shin BC respectively.
Four Chinese ladies doubles at the quarter finals affirm the strength and depth of the Chinese team in this disciplinel, Ma J/Tang YT, Tang JH/Tian Q, Yu Y/Zhong QX, Luo Ying/Luo Yu and they may create all China affairs at semifinal unless one of these following four pairs can deny them, Lee SH/Shin SC, Muskens/Piek, Pedersen/Juhl and Maheswari/Polii.
All eight mixed doubles seeds fulfill the script, four Chinese pairs at last eight and 1 semifinal slot has been assured through Xu C/Ma J v Lu K/Huang YQ. Local star, Ahmad/Natsir who have not performed well lately will try to bounce back and face the fast attacking Chinese youngster, Liu C/Bao YX. Zhang N/Zhao YL should have no problem to overcoming Adcock/Adcock. The close tie will be projected between Fischer/Pedersen v Ko SH/Kim HN.
LIVE TV (court 1, 01.30pm local time) matches :
1) Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii (INA) v Luo Ying/Luo Yu (CHN)
