The YWCA place on sunday morning is very very crowded, not recommended.

Hey cooler, have you played at YWCA before? For that matter...has anyone here played at the YWCA badminton club before? I've been a long long time member of that club, and yes, it does get crowded sometimes...but other times its so slow (it depends every week, and is totally unpredictable). Summers are usually a bit slower b/c everyone is on holidays.
Just to update the information, the club runs every Sunday from 9-12 now. I'm on my way there in a bit! The operator is actually Joe Lee, not Terence. Terence never did operate the club and the phone number is not valid anymore. I have an issue with the guy, but thats another story.
We do have the occasional drop ins and it is $5. I'm just curious if I've played with anyone on this board before! The level of players at this club is a mix from beginners to an intermediate I would say. Good place for interm. players I think.
Kitty, maybe you should drop by when your down during the summer. I'm always looking to play with new players...always trying to learn!

You can also check www.badmintoncalgary.ab.ca. It has a list of various locations, much already named in this thread.

yah, i have been to YWCA on sunday b4, only twice i think, 7 years ago and 5 months ago. I think Terence started the club but Joe is running it now. First visit is free. Out of the 6 courts, i would rate only 1 court are played by intermediate double. Ladies percentage is higher than most clubs. Mostly plastic players. ~90% are yonex users.
the terms advance, intermediate and beginner are quite loosey goosey to me

5 months ago...I'm sure I was there, maybe we met, I'm Randy. Where do you play now?
My uncle actually started the club (wasn't at the Y intially), and than Joe took over and started running it.
Today was packed! There was the regular members (15-20ish?) and than like 15-20 drop ins..it was so busy!

Great to meet you too Kitty. I guess it's your first time to sample some of our low calorie Calgary Lite 'air' over here. :) Yah, it would make you feel like breathing out more than breathing in :p My cane? LOL, it's in my gym bag. I bring it out only if I've gotten bruised and beaten bad on some off nights.
I manage to get back my tube of AS-20 after the session. One person 'unintentionally' took my 'full' tube for his/her empty tube (well, 1 used shuttle left). I missed some shots because I was scanning the gym for my missing tube of shuttle. We still manage to beat them pretty good tho :)

Hahaha, i must have overlooked this thread.
That semi bald guy likely be the 5'10" indian guy, he was professionally trained back in India. He's quite good, much better than me i may add. He can do backhand corner to corner even when the shuttle drop to his waist/thigh level.
About my hair, hehe, it was cut 1.5 weeks ago at the time i met kitty.

Yes it is quite crowded, by me and my friends pretty much know 72% of all the people that play badminton there so on fridays we always have little wait time before we play, we practically own 3 of the courts, lol. Sometimes more, if we go there early, and on fridays my school lets us off at 2, so thats another reason we go on fridays :D.

Yes it is quite crowded, by me and my friends pretty much know 72% of all the people that play badminton there so on fridays we always have little wait time before we play, we practically own 3 of the courts, lol. Sometimes more, if we go there early, and on fridays my school lets us off at 2, so thats another reason we go on fridays :D.
our national player keith chan's root came from there, same way like all you kids, to the courts after school :)
do you know anna?
do you know John (never smile guy) and trong(AT300)?

The bald Indian guy at U of C is Sarosh Wadia. I play against him whenever I can make it in ( usually Friday nights). I like U of C more than Hillhurst as not many play feather at Hillhurst and the concrete floor kills my knees.
I'm the big ugly white guy with the massive backhand and big boomer of a smash.

LOL, your name gave yourself away enough already. What nights do you play at strathmore? Still playing with 17 to 18 lbs tension string?
I think there are couple of groups at hillhurst that play feather now. I joined U of C for this fall session for a change of scene.

Strathmore club is in hiatus until we can secure the gym again ( usually thursdays nights) though Kenton ( the guy who coaches the high school team out my way) is having open gym one or two nights a week this month.
Funny everyone thinks I still string my raquets really low, but I've been playing with 21-22 pounds for about five years, though I tend to stretch the strings pretty quickly. (gee I wonder why)
That new Kevlar 7 I was trying out I had strung at 25 pounds, but I just couldn't control the damned thing. Ryan (Legere) took one swing with it and said " nice raquet, but ain't for you"
Turns out he's right - went back to my old Forza 9000 and started hitting bombs again.
Now I'm thinking I should know who you is,cooler.
By the way the Strathmore team tounrey is March 11 and 12th, 2005.

Hey there,
I just moved to Calgary and am looking for a good environment to play in. I dislike players who think they are elite.
Basically just looking for fun friendly players and don't mind a little bit of friendly competition as well.
Is there any badminton clubs located downtown? or possibly near 17st,17thave.
Thanks for any help in advance.

i know it's not a club or anything.
but i think one of the closest to 17th ave sw would have to be the talisman centre. there's no drop in but the new gyms are a great facility.

still a ~ $8 drop in, and u dunno who and how many people will be playing badminton. ALso, u have to book the court too. I doubt u can book the 'new section'. The regular court have poor lighting, white roof, white walls. Next to the 2 official size swimming pools, u will feel more humid than playing in SE asia.
