Looking at the MS draw, this year's edition could be as exciting provided that it is a fair competition played in a neutral ideal environment (i.e. no bombs threat, fans well behave, no dubious line calls, etc.:D )

Quarter 1

- Chen Hong has Dicky Palyama for his 1st round warm up session. 2nd round should be a breeze before playing Roslin Hashim in the last 16.
- Sixth seed, Ronald Susilo has another chance to cross sword with Chen Hong in last 8. But first, he need to overcome Malaysian national team discard Ismail Saman in Round 1, followed by a possible last 16 showdown with All England champion, Hafiz Hashim.

Quarter 2

- Host favourite, Sony Dwi Kuncoro has a clear path to last 16, where he's likely to play Lee HI. Very slim chance for the top Korean, especially since he'll be playing in Indonesia!!
- Other seeds, no 7 - Ng Wei and no 15 - Boonsak Polsana, will have a tough time living up to their seedings. They have dangerous players like Sairul Amar Ayob, Ong EH, Yong HK and Rony Agustinus for company in early rounds. Host player is the favourite to advance to last 8. Rony to play Ong EH in round 1.

Quarter 3

Killer quarter!! Exciting matches lined-up are:
- Lin Dan vs Budi Santoso in Round 2
- Marleve Mainaky vs Shon SM also in Round 2
My bets are Marleve will play Budi in Round 3
- Wong CH vs Chen Yu in Round 2. Winner to play Joppien Bjoern in last 16.

Quarter 4

- Bao CL is set to play Taufik in last 16. However, Bao should find it difficult to repeat his victory of Taufik during WC. Definitely not this time (in Indonesia)!:(
- Xia XZ will meet Lee TS in Round 2. However, Xia could withdraw if he does not recover from his injury in time. Winner will play former Indonesian, Agus Hariyanto.

Only Chen Hong has the best chance among non-Indonesian to qualify for last 4.
My expected semis line-up:

Chen Hong vs Sony Dwi Kuncoro
Marleve Mainaky/Budi Santoso vs Taufik Hidayat

Very thorough analysis. I agree with you mostly, but I have to tell something different from the angle I am viewing the draw.

Only Chen Hong has the best chance among non-Indonesian to qualify for last 4.

I think it is a tough draw for Chen Hong, from the round 0 to the end. Dicky Palyama is a giant killer. He has experience to show the exit to hot players. He may do it again as he did before for Taufik, Lee TS...

If Chen Hong survives, then Mahardi Wiempie or PUTRA Ardinasyah are waiting for him. Mahardi Wiempie's name got remembered from Singapore Open while PUTRA Ardinasyah's just crowned Indonesia Open Junior Title. PUTRA Ardinasyah has some kind of big advantages over many native shuttlers.

If Chen Hong is still there, then Roslin, then Hafiz (more chance than Susilo IMHO), who is still holding better head 2 head record against Chen Hong. It is difficult to beat brothers together!

Host favourite, Sony Dwi Kuncoro has a clear path to last 16, where he's likely to play Lee HI. Very slim chance for the top Korean, especially since he'll be playing in Indonesia

It is difficult for Lee HI to pass Lee Choong Wei again. YEOH Kay Bin could stop Lee HI at the first round too. Lee HI gets a hard draw too this time. Sony needs to overcome Gopi, and it should not be that difficult for Sony at INA open.

Wong CH vs Chen Yu in Round 2. Winner to play Joppien Bjoern in last 16.

No way for Joppien Bjoern ! (sorry for the strong words). Either Chua James or Wu Yunyong will play the winner between Wong CH and Chen Yu.

My final 4:
Chen Hong
Sony
Lin Dan
Bao

By reviewing the results from WC, Mas/China friendly, and Singapore Open, the Chinese are hot! It is difficult for them to lose one watch. There overall head to head:
35:1
Think about it! 35 wins with only 1 loss. And the loss was Chen Hong vs Shon at WC. That loss was also an accident, not a convincing one.

I see.... there is Wiempie or Ardinasyah in Chen Hong's quarter as potential qualifiers. I've ignored that earlier.

In that case, all Indonesian semis is not impossible.

Yeah, the possibility is always theoretically there, but the question is how much?

Remember last year INA open, who were the final 4?
They were Taufik, Chen Hong, Bao, and Rony

Ok, ok... IMO, the chances are at least 50%.
But one thing we have to acknowledge is Taufik Hidayat's invincibility in Indonesia.
He's the defending champion beating Chen Hong, and if I'm not wrong, "helped" by the linesmen to knock out Ong EH in year 2000.
The 2001 edition was won by Marleve beating Lee TS.
So, Indonesian victory is almost a sure thing.:(

Round of 1/1024? Is that the preliminary round...by the way if i'm not wrong, this should be Taufiq Akbaq Hidayat, not the actual Taufik Hidayat that we have known...there are 2 taufiks in indonesia anyway...

yes, round 1/1024 is the first round in the preliminary. Since this year's ina open is so hot, that it has 10 rounds including the qualifying rounds.

We can distinquish two Hidayats by "k" and "q". One is a killer, the other is cute?
Taufik was the winner last year while Taufiq was the quarter finalist.

whizkelv

Oh yes, I can remember the one with "q" very well, as he knocked-off the our then Malaysian sensation, Lee TS who killed of their "killer" in the TC final.:D

If you think ina shuttlers are invincible at homecourt, it is the time for you to think again.

Out of 44 ina players, only 1 is qualified for the main draw.
While Malaysia has 3 qualified out of from 12
China has 1 out of 1
Korea has 1 out of 2
Chinese Taipei has 1 out of 2
India has 1 out of 5

Survive rate:
China: 100%
Korea: 50%
Taipei: 50%
Malay: 25%
India: 20%
Indon: 2%

Hmm... you could be right this time.
However, their giants (Taufik Hidayat & Sony) have cruised to the last 16 with ease.

Some selected last 32 results:

Sony bt Gopichand 15-2, 15-6
Boonsak bt Ong EH 15-7, 15-3
Lin Dan bt Budi Santoso 15-3, 15-6 (very one-sided, I'm pretty wrong this time!:p )
Shon SM bt Marleve Mainaky 15-3, 15-11 (I lost my bets on this as well!:p )
Wu YY bt Joppien 15-6, 15-7
Lee TS bt Indra Wijaya 15-13, 15-7

Chen Hong vs Roslin Hashim
Ronald Susilo vs Hafiz Hashim
Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Lee HI
Ng Wei vs Boonsak Polsana
Lin Dan vs Shon SM
Wu YY vs Lee CW (Malaysian national champion replacing Wong CH)
Bao CL vs Taufik Hidayat
Lee TS vs Agus Hariyanto

Tomorrow's pick of the day: Bao CL vs Taufik (and the whole Indonesia)

I pick the following players to advance:

Chen Hong
Hafiz Hashim
Sony
Boonsak
Lin Dan
Wu YY
Taufik (Bao will win easily if this is not Indonesian Open!)
Lee TS

All my predicted final four (Chen Hong, Sony, Lin, Bao) managed to survive on the day one. I keep my finger crossed.

Chen Yu seems always to have problem to play whoever he first meets. I, personally think, he is very powerful and extremely fast, but he just doesn’t have the ability to control the change. If he plays longer enough with anyone, he can dominate. But if someone new, or someone change a little bit, Chen Yu will be easily got confused and not know how to play.

Wu Yun Yong is very skillful, but he doesn’t have enough heavy weapons, as most other Chinese players have, to deal with top players. So it is really difficult for him to beat Lee Chong Wei.

Chen Yu beat Lee HI convincingly a week ago at Singapore open, while Lee HI beat Lee Chong Wei a week ago at Singapore open. So there should not be difficult for Chen Yu to beat Chong Wei theoretically. But unfortunately, the transition law just doesn’t apply here. That’s reason we are here to predict the unpredictable, and we also need to calm down to expect the unexpectable.

Hmm... perhaps what Malaysia could do in next year's TC (assuming Chen Yu managed to move up the ranks to no 2 or no 3) is to train up internationally little-known youngsters like Yeoh KB or Kuan BH and let them face Chen Yu. Lee TS is an "outdated" weapon by now!:D

Couple questions guys/gals....

In Malaysia, how one become a National Champion? Does one have to play with International players like Hafiz, Lee TS ....? If he does, Lee CW is something else...
For him to beat Chen Yu is not easy task either... I think by taking over Wong CH place on the draw definitely helps. At least he doesn't have to play with some top seed player.

Also, can someone describe Lee CW? Left/Right hander, Offensive/Defensive/all around...etc.

How about Wu YY? What type of player is him?

My prediction:

Semi's:
Chen H vs Sony K
Shon SM vs Taufik H

Actually, anybody can beat anybody on quarters. Tough prediction...even the last 16... If I'm at the stadium, I don't think I can sleep after watching the games...

Yes. I totally agree. Introduce 2 unknows, keep Wong Choon Hann, Hafiz and Lee TS. If they still include Roslin, then it is a waste of space.
Roslin cannot perform in big events and with his ultra defensive style, it is like a mouse running about just waiting to be squashed by a giant.

Malaysia practises the World GP Finals (which has been scrapped 2 years back) format as their national championship. Top 16 qualifiers determined thru points gained in national circuit tournaments. So, it's basically a competition between the national players.

However, some arrogant "professional" players has the knack of skipping the local circuits which eventually resulted them in missing a place in the National GP Finals. These players often cited their professional commitment to the world circuits, where on the other hands, staging badminton clinics here and there to promote their professional clubs and sponsors.

Chen Hong vs Roslin Hashim --> Chen
Ronald Susilo vs Hafiz Hashim --> Hafiz
Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Lee HI --> Sony
Ng Wei vs Boonsak Polsana --> Ng
Lin Dan vs Shon SM --> Lin
Wu YY vs Lee CW --> Wu (although Lee did bt. Chen Yu today)
Bao CL vs Taufik Hidayat --> Bao (Taufik will still be nervous when he
remembers his last heavy thrashing by Bao
at WC '03, even if he has mass crowd on him.
Lee TS vs Agus Hariyanto --> Lee

Semi-final predictions (more like hopes)

Chen H. vs.Ng Wei (okay, so he is a small chance, and will likely will be Sony here)
Lin vs. Bao

Basically what you saying is Lee CW title cannot really justify his capability of becoming a future star. I think BAM should force those "professional" players to play on the local National GP. That way they won't be too arrogant if they can't even beat the rookies. Also, this will help the youngster gaining confidence.

Chen Hong vs Roslin Hashim --> 7:1 in favour of Chen ******
Ronald Susilo vs Hafiz Hashim --> 2:0 in favour of Susilo **
Sony Dwi Kuncoro vs Lee HI --> 0:0
Ng Wei vs Boonsak Polsana --> 1:2 in favour of Polsana *
Lin Dan vs Shon SM --> 5:0 in favour of Lin *****
Wu YY vs Lee CW --> 1:0 in favour of Wu * (calm down? we should keep the integrity of the data!)
Bao CL vs Taufik Hidayat --> 2:1 in favour of Bao *

So if history repeats, Chen Hong, Lin Dan(both have huge advantage in h2h), Susilo, Bao Chun Lai, and Wu Yun Yong should advance.

- Susilo should score more points this time in his birth country. However, it's still a mountain too high to climb.

Lee HI vs Ng Wei

- Lee did very well to crush the hearts of local fans. No one gave him a damn to reach the last 8, but now he has a very high probability to reach the semis.

No surprise for Hafiz at all. He has never beat Susilo before. Their head to head is 0:3 in which Susilo dominates. And also look at his performance, except won a 4 star, Hafiz almost always failed in the early rounds. He also lost in the friendlies. This INA open is probably his 2nd best. So cheer up.

It is kind of unexpected that Lee HI and especially Shon Mo advanced. Sony has not met Lee b4. So it should be 50-50 while Lin Dan has a 5:0 head to head.

Chinese seemed invincible until this ina open. It is really hard play there maybe. But Korean are doing very good. Lee and Shon seem to be real fighters who can fight under any circumstances. No one imagine that Lee will meet Shon in the final, but it could happen theoretically

You are underestimating the Koreans!
No doubt that the Korean referees and linesmen are "total-corrupts", the players (Lee HI and Shon SM) are actually world class in terms of skills.
I would rate them as world top 15 materials.

However, I agree with your last statement that all-Korean finals is almost impossible in Indonesian Open!

You're still gonna go for Lin, even though he already lost??:D :D

It's quite a pity Lin and Bao are out, but then again for some odd reason, even when 2/3 of top CHN shuttlers gone, there's still possbility for 3 Chinese to be in the 4 semi-final spots (if we count Mr. Ng here).

So Bao got some revenge here, but still not as bad as getting thrashed in WC in neutral gound.

I think Wu Yun Yong is trying to impersonate Chen Yu and make another "unkown Chinese shuttler" VS. established shuttler final! :) Of course, I hope he succeeds.

Silvia, you seem to have a really pessimistic view of Korean athletes!!:) I have to agree though, Korean linesmen and refs can be corrupt and will definitely lean towards their own countrymen. But then again, so can the Chinese linejudges. Remember Guang Zhou - Xia Xuanze vs. Wong CH?
But you are right, the Koreans still do have a tendancy to do some "manipulating" at other times as well... FIFA WC 2002 and Busan Games come to mind.

Their MS shuttlers though, as Whiz and W|2172 (how do you even pronounce that sir?) are actually quite good. They can normally have a couple in quarter-finals and sometimes 1 in semi-finals at most given tourneys. If they have the likes of player who could beat Chen Hong (albeit lucky) and Peter Gade then they must be decent players.

:D Good one, whiz. Good one. :D (I hope swijaya would see the humour in this one)

So, Shon Sheung Mo got through? I don't know why but somehow I've been rooting for this guy a lot for the last few tournaments. Go Shon! (unless his next opponent in Malaysian, that is).

And "go Wu!", Hugo? ;)

Taufik is through. Trashed LEE TS.

Lets hope he goes all the way, come on Taufik.

The score between Taufik and Lee TS is 15-3, 15-6 is Taufik's favour.
Not surprising at all!
His semi and final opponent may get similar trashing (including Chen Hong)!:(

Yeah. Sad for Lee TS as well, but at least he performed when he should, unlike Hafiz. He was leading 10-2 in the second set against Ronald, then his brain decided to take a walk.

Can anybody please confirm whether the Indonesian Open Semi-Finals are played in the afternoon or evening, and what time do they start?

Hoping they are played in the afternoon so that I can take a boat to Batam and return in time without having to stay overnight!

Thanks in advance.

Susilo is doing pretty well in front of his native fans, rather than his adopted country's ministers!:p
That's the difference playing in Indonesia!!:D

Indonesia is the holy land of badminton...hahahahaha. Anyway, looks more and more like a Chen Hong and Taufik showdown. However, anything can still happen.

Hafiz should be kicking himself right now.

I think Ronald has redeemed himself somewhat although taking a game off Chen Hong would be a more appropriated gift to those Singaporeans who supported him throughout, including our Ministers. The scoreline is more like it when Ronald has beaten the likes of Shon and Hafiz, who in turn had defeated Chen before.

It is to be expected that Ronald should score more points as he played more times with Chen and when Ronald's confidence has grown and he believes in himself, an upset could well be possible. I'm looking forward to that day.

I only hope that during the Malaysian Open, Malaysian players will not disappoint their "native fans". Hopefully, they will be supported by their ministers' presence to add to confidence. Otherwise, there is NO difference playing in Malaysia!

Don't count on it Loh....hahahah. Wait till you see Choong start scratching or shaking his head.
If I were the ministers, I would take my family out for a good meal rather then watching them squirm on court.

Ronald is one of the most improved players in the circuit, should see more of him form now on.

Choong/Lee is beginning to amaze me now. Cai Yun/Fu Hai Feng got thrashed 15-8, 15-4.

Hoever, the same cannot be said for Chan/Chew. After a promising run, they fell to veteran Thai pair.

Lee HI bt Ng Wei 15-6, 17-14

At the recent S'pore Open, I saw your veteran pair of Lee and Choong in action. Yes, granted Choong seemed to be less steady and made more unforced errors, this pair impressed me and I think they did very well to give the WC Champion pair of Jonas and Lars a run for their money in three games! To think at their age they are still very fast and their understanding and good shot placements had been honed from years of experience playing together!

If they are still in good form, they can jolly well carry away the MD crown. And if your ministers are there to lend support, wow, their confidence will certainly be boosted higher! In the past, when your PM's wife made her presence to support M'sian players, they always played better!

We need politicians, the more powerful the better, to support the game. Imagine if we can get the President of the USA to grace a badminton event, what uplift and tremendous publicity it will give to the game. So, in S'pore, we are very thankful that our Ministers came and support Ronald Susilo and they also came to the Finals, stayed on to enjoy world-class badminton and share in giving away the prizes. Badminton in S'pore is in the limelight and that is a tremendous boost!

Yeah, go Wu!!!

But Taufik looks like he's suddenly taken a sip of Popeye's spinach! Beating the likes of Bao and Lee with ease.

The good thing is unlike Bao and Lee, Wu can go into the match thinking he's got nothing to lose, that he shouldn't even have made this far. That will be his one advantage.

Agreed Loh, I was just joking. Support is indeed important, but players must have the right approach. If they view themselves as being under pressure, then chances are they will most certainly buckle. On the other hand, if they are positive, then it will become a morale booster.

Choong and Lee were once touted as the fastest and sharpest pair in the world when they just emerged. But somehow, after a few promising years, "fastest" became "fattest". I am very very sad that they did not make full use of their prime years. Now, at the twilight of their careers, I sincerely wish them all the best. If they believe in themselves, they can reverse their fortunes and bring back those years they have lost.....and the olympics beckons.

People make mistakes, but if they learn and come out stronger, then that is a true champion.

They may be called as veterans now, but at the age of 28, I think they can still play few years of good badminton provided that they have the right attitude.
Micheal Soogard, who just quited recently, was still among the best doubles players at the age of 30.

Taufik swallowed Wu YY convincingly 15-8, 15-5.
Wu simply had no answer for Taufik's steady play coupled with shouts from fanatic Indonesian fans.

So, it's gonna be a tough time for Chen Hong tomorrow, if he aims to tame Taufik.
