Oh I'm shocked and offended, what type of person would admire a sportsperson purely for their looks I mean for shame ;)

PS I'm allowed to make this assumption since no where in a couple of posts on this topic have you mentioned his playing ability.

Hello I think u made a mistake here........of coz i admire his skills too if not in the first place I would not have even notice him.....

hey Sylvia, I have his pics! N I just send message for u.
I like XXZ too~ he's wonderful. Yeah... he never give up. When he's playing, he oways fall down as he tries his best to fetch the ball! I'm touching about it. No doubt, his skill is good too.
There's another XXZ's homepage made by his fan, but it's in Chinese....

Ha.... why suddenly ChunLai's fan come inside here?
I've seen his page b4 ..... but now, forgot, sorry, will try to find.
I agree that Bao is talented. n .... oso, he's still young!
He already has the ability to beat any world's top badminton players.
As I know, he n Xia have many fans in China while Chen Hong's fans aren't that much.
um .... btw, bao's birthday is same month n day as Malaysia's wong choon han

From the pic, looks like he is using Carbonex 21 from the frame shape and color for the racket. Anyone know exactly which racket was he holding?

Agree 100 % !

But first improve that leg-work

and study more tactics from Yang Yang !

Strange thing about CH 's popularity in China,

I bet Wong Choon Han has more fans in China than Chen Hong !

Hai guys, during indonesian open i went back to watch the final, and before that i went to see the chinese players practised, and xuanze and bao were playing against each other.......both of them very good looking, and i saw xuanze keep giving advise to bao,,and guess wat, xuanze called bao 'suai ke' (Handsome guy)............

Bbn

Well Bao must thank Xia for the advise,

he just beat Xia in Msia Open, now how is it going to affect Xia's

Olympics qualification!

whizkelv
09-04-2003, 09:59 AM
Well, no worries actually!
Xia is still firm in the 3rd position of world ranking list despite skipping the 5* Indon Open last week.
Winning the 7* WC really make a huge difference!

I would say Chen Hong and Xia is almost assured of the Athens ticket from China team. The remaining slot shall be fiercely contested between Bao, Lin Dan, Chen Yu and Wu YY.

With a tinge of rebelliousness, and a desire to stand out - A closeup on a world-class player Xia Xuanze
By Liang Yan

Different people hold different opinions about Xia Xuanze. To his fans, their deepest impression of him is his never-say-die attitude on court and that famous "Big-mouth" smile of his. To his juniors, he is the ever affable big brother. To Wong Choong Hann whom he has defeated 8 times consecutively, he has yet become a crafty opponent. As one of best men's singles players in the Chinese team, Xia Xuanze is always shuttling here and there during tournaments. I could only gather bits and pieces of him between matches to form a charismatic "Big-mouth Xia".

In the eyes of the players and journalists from other countries, Chinese players appear to be very mysterious as the interviews have to be conducted through an appointed interpreter within the team and the answers given are always standard and politically correct. Xia Xuanze was the first one to break the barrier by learning a little English on his own. Although still not very proficient, he would not let go of any opportunity to speak it. Be it in an interview or just chatting with foreign players, as long as he understands, he would try his best to reply in English. After a period of practice, Xia Xuanze has become half an interpreter of the Chinese team. According to Xia himself, he is one who is full of curiosity towards new things. Besides taking part in tournaments, going abroad also enhances his life experiences. He wants to use English as the key to the door of another world. At the same time, he hopes to change the "unapproachable" image of the Chinese players. Therefore, he often takes the initiative to interact with the foreign media and players. "Although I am not as fluent as professional interpreters, I have the sincerity." When he used English to invite American journalists to visit Beijing, and when he boldly questioned the IBF during a press conference, the Chinese journalists all felt a sense of pride in the new generation of Chinese players.

Xia Xuanze was once regarded as the "lei xiaozi" (refers to materialistic and decadent youths) of the team for he would always have a cup of Starbucks coffee in his hand wherever he goes. He is however in any case not one who idolizes western culture. He once mentioned that he enjoys reading books on history and appreciates Yue Fei's "Man Jiang Hong" (loosely translated as River Awashed in Red) most of all, but he could only recite it most expressively and indignantly when he loses a match. It was a pity I did not get a chance to hear him recite it when he won at the World Championships.

When writing about Xia Xuanze's badminton career, Wong Choong Hann is one person that cannot be left out. In their 8 head-to-heads, Xia Xuanze had put the 'big brother' of the Malaysian team to shame. For this reason, Wong Choong Hann considers Xia Xuanze his craftiest opponent. Yet Xia Xuanze remarked with an innocent face, "Look at me. Would you consider me a crafty person?" In contrast to Wong Choong Hann's fear for Xia Xuanze, Xia Xuanze actually feels a little intimidated by some of the defensive players he meets on court. "I had been defeated 4 times by Hendrawan and lost numerous times to Ong Ewe Hock. But I have never been afraid of them. I heard that Wong Choong Hann has already found a way to conquer me, so I really look forward to meeting him in the China Open.

Without question, Xia Xuanze is famous for his self-confidence. When I mentioned that he looked dashing in one of the advertisements he did, he held up his head and went, "But of course! I've been very photogenic all along!"

I wonder what new tactic Wong Choong Hann is going to use to conquer Xia if they meet in the China open!

1. Han Jian was the first chinese player that I am aware of that learnt English to communicate. He gave a post match interview (very short) after winning the 1985 WC. Quite difficult for me to understand that time.

2. Crafty? Isn't that a crafty statement by Xia?:)

I suppose it was referring to the present Chinese team.

One other point of doubt. Did Xia lose to Hendrawan only on 4 occasions? I can already count threee now: Sydney 2000 semis, WC01 qf, AG02 qf, and all these are major tournaments. Anyone else can confirm?

Cheung
11-13-2003, 08:40 AM
TC 2001 finals both were playing first singles position.

nauknip
11-13-2003, 11:10 AM
TC2000 Final. Yes. Hendrawan beat him in 3 games. That's already four tournaments, all major ones. Which is why I thought Xia probably did not only lose four times to Hendrawan. Hmm.

Cheung
11-13-2003, 11:33 AM
Xia came on to the scene in 2000 winning the German Open and the AE.

Sometime in the 1st half of 2000, I think Hendrawan did suffer a loss to Xia and also Ji Xin Peng (maybe the Japan and TaiPei Opens). Wether they have met other times I am doubtful.

nauknip
11-13-2003, 11:45 AM
Yup I went to check. Xia bt Hendrawan in AE 2000 I think. Well then Xia must be really unlucky to be meeting and losing to Hendrawan only in big tournaments. How sad. I miss Hendrawan. :(

Loh

Congratulations nauknip for such a fluent translation on the article. Although I don't read Chinese and thus have no way to know whether you have been accurate and faithful in your translation, your account makes easy reading as your choice of words and sentence construction is effective. You should be able to score high marks for your translation in your forthcoming exam.

However, I can't understand your fourth sentence when you mentioned "To WCH, whom he has defeated 8 times consecutively, 'he has yet become a crafty opponent'." I thought WCH admitted that Xia is crafty.

Regarding Hendrawan, I was often told that despite his "advance" age, relative to the other much younger singles members in the Indonesian team, he is often chosen to play singles simply because he has a good brain and is able to think fast on the court to outwit his opponents.

Thanks again for your time and effort. Btw, are you doing your A Levels?

Er... I meant 'yet' as a contrast to the previous nice opinions other people had about it... Wrong usage here?

And no again, :p I'm in my final year at nus.

Besides his wit, what I admire Hendrawan most for is his determination and and humility. Commands total respect. ;) I might have mentioned this a few times b4, but without Hendrawan there'll be no such thing as badminton in my life.

Commercialization of China is moving into full gear. Even Chinese badminton is not spared by all the razz matazz of capitalism! :)

But it's nothing new really, we can see a lot of those Lee Wan Wah shampoo adverts in Malaysia anyway...

kwun
03-02-2004, 06:15 PM
i think that's a good thing. mainland Chinese badminton fans are complaining that Chinese sports media are full of soccer and western sports coverage. any healthy badminton exposure like this i think will be welcomed by any badminton fans.

It's the Follow Me brand I think. Walk the hypermarkets up a bit and you'd probably see a small cardboard of him with the cheesy smile, holding a bottle of the shampoo. His hair looks something like Lin Dan's if I'd say.

Indeed, commercialization of the game is good, makes badminton a cool sport to play and it is OK to be good in badminton. A lot of people (as discussed often) still think that the game is for sissies and I encountered one such fella in one of the chat channels. I told him that I don't play footie well, but I play badminton and he shouted back at me "Why play that sissy game??".

Oh, the moderator kicked him out for that ungentlemanly behaviour... ;)

:D How about UNDERWEAR ads/commercials? I'm sure they'll be more convincing as they have "encouraging" bodies rather than endorsing shampoo brands which I don't is very sound for a badminton player to endorse....

From previous pictures of the Chinese team I have seen them all wearing Burberry. I wonder if they are sponsored by Burberry agents in China, are a gift from Li YongBo? or some badminton loving tycoon?

I don't think they are individual purchases because they are all wearing the same range..

Any more info on that?

Is that truth?

Is he going to live there or he is going to came for the league matches only (which is unlikely since the flight time and jetlag will make the permanent traveling very unhealthy)?

Last week a new chinese girl came to our club. she's 18 years old and she is ranked 15 in China's senior rankings. I practice with her.

There are people who do want to help raise the standard of badminton in other countries. Obviously, Xia feels this is the best way for him to make his unselfish contribution to badminton, to be soms kind of catalyst in Germany. Going to countries that are already strong in the game will be less noble, don't you agree?

What do you call a defending World Champion with a proven talent for coming up with big wins - as opposed to only excelling in 2nd-tier tournaments like, say, Chen Hong - being left at home for the Olympics, Sudirman Cup, and World Championships all within 12 months? That's a waste!

This is nothing like the defections of Pi Hongyan, Yao Jie, Xu Huaiwen, Li Li and Wang Chen. In the case of those players, they were only ever 2nd-tier. They only win when the (still-)Chinese players don't show up. For all intents and purposes, none of them EVER beat Xie, Zhang, Zhou or Gong. I'm sure you can count the exceptions to that rule on one hand. Okay, I did the math and the five "foreigners" are 15-65 against the four Chinese. It only changes to 14-59 if you don't count Li Li because she's not in the top 10.

Xia Xuanze, by contrast, is a proven champion. Moreover, the only current top 10 players against whom he has a losing record are Taufik(2-3) and Chen Hong(1-2). Against everyone else, he is ahead or dead even except Wong Choonghan, whom he has schooled 8 times without a loss!

Enjoy Europe, Xia!

If it is true, then it can only be seen as a good decision, for fans, Europeans and himself.

It looks like he still has much to give, but he is not getting a chance to as the 4th ranked player at home.

I find it quite strange that someone so seemingly loyal to the team has(?) left to another country. Like event says this is much different to other chinese defections in that Xia was a top player, all the others were never going to cut it.

Waiting for Kwuns reaction:)

I'm not trying to insult anyone. You are correct in that I should not have used the outdated word "defections" and I had intended to put it in quotation marks. You are also correct in that I don't know why they chose to go abroad.

I do, however, often hear, and I think it is a reasonable assumption, that the five players I mentioned chose to go abroad to avoid being passed over for national squads or eliminated from eligibility to big tournaments because of the number of stronger players from their nation ahead of them in the rankings. My point was simply that their results have not yet contradicted this assumption. I dont' blame them for that decision regardless of the reason and I would love to see someone like Pi Hongyan take a big title from the top Chinese players. She hasn't done it yet. By the way, I am only going by the IBF website that has her 0-2, 1-7, 1-4, and 1-2 against Gong Ruina, Zhang Ning, Xie Xingfang, and Zhou Mi respectively. If you know of an omission of a record of Pi beating Gong, please post it.

My point was simply that one should not make the same assumptions about Xia. His rankings have fallen but that is mostly because he hasn't been playing. I don't believe he is over the hill or unable to make the grade. Left out of the Olympics and Sudirman Cup and now the Worlds? Wasn't Hendrawan offered a special pass in 2003 despite not being in the top 100? I just think that if Xia were to play outside of China, he might make you wonder why they let him go.

As for Pi Hongyan, I'll be applauding if she beats the big three next week, too. I like Zhang Ning, too, but I always cheer more loudly for the shorter players.

When people (voluntarily) move to another country, it is usually for two reasons: love or money.

We really don't know why Xia decides to move to Germany, and maybe we never will. Maybe it hurt the ego of a World Champ to play 2nd (well 4th really) stringer. Maybe he is in conflict with Li YongBo. Or maybe, nearing the end of his career, he thinks this is a good way to wind down? Financially it is probably not a bad idea to go to Germany. There is actually some money in the German Bundesliga for the best players, and Xia will be the best there. And perhaps he will also take the opportunity of furthering his education, to make sure he gets a life after badminton? Or -- who knows -- maybe love is in he air? ;)

Whatever his reasons are, they are his own and should be respected. Talking about "wasting talent" is plain silly. Instead we should wish Xia good luck in his new home!

Exactly, there is money in germany. Education also good point and to add maybe he wants to control his own career now instead of being in "the system" in China. Where Chen Hong imho is a prototype of the system and Lin Dan is the advanced newer model from what I know XXZ is just a different person maybe better suited outside the sytem after so many years.

XXz moves to Germany should be good for badminton. It's not a loss to China. His move would definitely help to raise the standard of the game in Europe too.The most important thing is the game will be become more exciting with him representing Germany one day.Let's be more open minded.Life goes on.:)

Really? Xuanze's going to Germany? hmm... I was wondering why he would want to go there.. I dont know why but I felt sad because he left.. :( Maybe its because I felt that he was very loyal to the China team and he just suddenly left like that.. I am not saying that he is disloyal.. but ... i just don't know how to explain:confused:

Well.. maybe its for his own good.. :o I certainly hope his result will become top again..;)

He is leaving because there is no future for a spare tire in China. But his departure is good for the game of badminton-it will spark some sort of interest, as well as improve standards, in another part of the world. Isn't this what we all want-for badminton to spread far and wide?

excuse me Li Li beat Xie Xing Fang in the malaysia open i think you got your facts wrong for this

This doesn't make my facts wrong. Of the 15 wins by Li, Pi, Xu, Yao, and Wang, that was the one contributed by Li Li. According to my calculations, Li Li has one win and six losses combined in all her games against the top four Chinese women. I'm going only by IBF records, of course. Hence, taking her record away from the aggregate of 15-64, that left 14-59. IBF says Li Li is 1-1 versus Xie, 0-3 versus Gong, and 0-1 against the other two. You judge for yourself how telling these stats are. I hyperbolized in saying that they never win but then I recanted and produced the numbers which included Li Li's single victory.

My point was more that the overseas four (or over-border in the case of Wang) hardly ever topple the top four Chinese despite being ranked 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th in the world respectively.

As far as I know, no one has that kind of an upper hand on Xia Xuanze. Therefore he shouldn't be considered a spare tire or over the hill or whatever regardless of the chances he's missing as a member of the Chinese team.

Xia Xuanze is now registered as a player in the German Bundesliga. The following is partly taken from the homepage of his new team EBT Berlin (http://www.ebt-badminton.de/) and partly my own analysis:

There are several reasons for his decision to play in Germany:

1. The season takes place only six or seven months (from Sep to Feb or Mar and one month Christmas break). So he can go back and train in Beijing during the off season.

2. The president of his new team EBT Berlin is a really good China expert in both business and badminton aspect. He wanted to hire Xia one year ago already. Further, Xia is a good friend of Conrad Hueckstaedt, a German player for EBT Berlin, who used to train in China and is able to speak Chinese very well. EBT Berlin has had a young Chinese player for the last two years whose name was Chuan Xuan, Shanghai.

3. The pay he will get is not that high in the comparison with the Indonesian, Korean or Japanese leagues, but still competitive and the highest in the German or other European leagues including the Danish. Xia's new employer is "Badminton-fanatic" and willing to pay a lot and eager to hold the German Championship Trophy next year (2005 Champion was my home team BC Beuel with Marc Zwiebler and Xie Yangchun).

4. His new team will support Xia in open tournaments across Europe even if the Chinese national squad excludes him. Xia will then start for his new team.

What a pity for the young Chinese player who represented EBT Berlin during the last couple of seasons.

I was just going to say perhaps due to his exclusion from the Chinese squad in the World Champs (i.e due to the limitation of each country being allowed only 3 reps from the top 20), he has decided to play for another country so he can feature in the next World Champs.

Hi, Cheung!

I didn't mean to say that Xia Xuanze is going to represent another country. Xia XZ doesn't want that probably. I saw several male Chinese players playing in Europe. And most of them didn't change their nationality. They are just like professional football players who belong to foreign football clubs but still represent their original countries in international events like FIFA World Cup.

So the possibility I mentioned in my previous post is just the participation of some Open tournaments like All England or German Open. Open Tournaments allow the registration of players who don't belong to a certain National Squad, and thus such players are able to start for their own clubs.

That means that Xia XZ is not going to play in evnts like Thomas Cup or WC if he isn't a member of his own national squad.

One question regarding to the original article. I thought Xia is from "Xiamen", while Jin is from "Hangzhou". How could they been selected into the same providence team?
