Newly Form Mixed Doubles Surprise Hong Kong Top Pairs
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- The new Malaysian mixed doubles partnership of Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Wong Pei Tty pulled off an upset when they beat the top Hong Kong pair of Albertus Susanto Njoto and Li Wing Mui in the first qualifying round of the Proton-EON Malaysian Badminton Open at the Likas Indoor Stadium here Tuesday.
Mohd Zakry and Pei Tty took 50 minutes to beat the Hong Kong pair 15-4, 15-8.
The Malaysian pair took command of both sets without giving much room for their opponents to steal points.
National doubles coach Yap Kim Hock said he was happy with the performance of the newly-formed pair.
"This is the first time they are playing together as a pair and it is very encouraging that they beat the top Hong Kong mixed doubles partnership," he added.
Kim Hock said Mohd Zakry was still considered quite junior in the national team, while Pei Tty was a more experienced shuttler. However, the pair showed good combination Tuesday.
Pei Tty's partner during the Birmingham World Championships in August, Chin Eei Hui, who Tuesday partnered Koo Kien Keat, lost to the Danish mixed doubles pair of Mathias Boe and Helle Nielsen in a rubber set.
The Malaysian pair won the first set 15-10 but lost the rythm in the second set, going down 10-15 before the Danish pair wrapped up the third set at 15-6.
Meanwhile, in the women's singles, Wong Miew Choo also got past the first round of the RM456,000 tournament when she edged Salakjit Polsana, the sister of Thailand's top men's singles, Bonsak Polsana, 11-2, 13-10.
But Miew Choo's sister, Mew Kheng, lost to Tine Rasmussen of Denmark in straight sets of 13-11, 11-1.
The first qualifying rounds Tuesday involved mostly junior players, while the top Malaysian shuttlers will start their matches on Wednesday.
The qualifiers Tuesday will have to wait until the final qualifying round Wednesday morning to see whether they qualify for the first round of the annual Malaysian Open scheduled to start at 11 am.

nice job!
Do you have any information about those qualifiers who got promoted?
I noticed that there were 4 players promoted to the main draw,
http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/MAS03msqual.html
but I cannot find them in the main draw page
http://www.worldbadminton.net/Portal/documents/MAS03ms.html
Some players must have withrawn from the main draw, who are they? and who are going to replace them?
Anyone knows before the 1st round results available

From the looks of it, the WS qualifications seem to be dominated by unknown Indonesians... (except Maria Kristin who we know from the Sudirman Cup)
Are there any new girls coming to contest chinese hegemony?? ;)

Don't be so pessimistic. Still got hope.
What we need from Misbun is equal attention to youngsters like Lee CW, Yeoh KB and Kuan BH, instead of solely focusing on the Hashim brothers.
Lee TS's performance seems to be on a slide since Misbun takes over. He was the Dutch Open champion, Swiss Open runner-up and Indonesian Open runner-up in year 2001 when Indra Gunawan was coaching.
Could not cope with different training approach or.....?

Tsuen Seng Loses To Indon Junior, Kay Bin Upsets Dane
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia featured in two upsets in the men's singles of the RM456,000 Malaysian Open here Wednesday, with Lee Tsuen Seng falling to an Indonesian junior shuttler and Yeoh Kay Bin packing off the tournament's fifth seed.
Tsuen Seng was outplayed by qualifier Simon Santoso 17-15, 3-15, 7-15 in 75 minutes while Kay Bin stunned Denmark's Anders Boesen 14-17, 15-9, 15-6 in the first round.
The southpaw Tsuen Seng said although he won the opening game, he was rattled by Simon's fighting spirit.
"I am a slow starter in the Malaysian Open. Although I gave my best, Simon proved to be a very determined player," he said.
"When he forced deuce in the opening game, his confidence rose and my game just fell apart in the second and third sets," he said.
Simon, 18, a backup player, said the victory was unexpected and it augured well for his career.
"I just gave my best and tried to trap him into following my tempo. He looked tired, maybe because he played in the preceding Singapore and Indonesian Opens," he said.
After suffering first-round losses at the Singapore and Indonesian Opens, Kay Bin somewhat redeemed himself by defeating Boesen in 85 minutes.
"That was my fourth meeting with Boesen. Today's win puts our record at 2-2. The hot weather here might have affected him," said Kay Bin, who is ranked 50th in the world.
Kay Bin will meet Dicky Palyama of Holland in the second round on Thursday. Dicky beat Sam Smith of Canada 15-4, 15-6 Wednesday.

Does not look good for his match against Lee HI.

We'll see for Jonassen, but Lee HI seems on rather good form at the moment!
Lee CW 's win on Kaldau is also quite impressive (15-7 15-3)
... and Ra&Lee seem to really have found the weakness of Wei&Zhao with two very easy wins in a row!!
(unless this is due to Zhao TT 's recent bad form)

It's great to see Choong/Lee beating another Chinese pair.
Hope they don't crumble against another young Indonesian pair.
Judging from the results so far, they are likely to regain their national no 1 status in next week's world ranking list!

1st major victory for Ra & Lee and chinese pairs dated back in WC.
With the fact chinese players went to deep rounds in almost all the past tournies in the past 1.5 month, guess stamina really playing its role now.
Wondering whether this also applies for MD.
With the fact of early exists of team mates, guess the remaining chinese players will face tough match up later on. So far, chinese "army" lost the most when comparing to the earlier tournies due to injury, performance, "internal match", etc.

So who is right, Wongbadminton.net or the posters here. Did Chen Hong win the match?

I am rite :D
The score in worldbadminton.net is correct but the player stated is not correct.
I saw the match live on TV just now, Wong CH was leading 5-0 in the first set but did not put on a good fight after that.
Chen Hong beat Wong CH in straight sets 15-13, 15-7.

Break up the pair?? Believe the ladies are evenly matched, but the difference lies with the men. The Korean (man) have more shots variety than the Chinese.

Yeah, kick out Zhang Jun and substitute with Cai Yun or Fu Haifeng!:p :D

I noticed that there seems to quite a hint of 'bad blood' from the opponent of Zhou Mi every time she plays, most recently Camilla who swore and hit the shuttle out of exasperation during the second set.
The last time I saw this was when she played against Wang Chen and I noticed as if they harbour some sort of animosity to each other.
Zhou's a master tactician in mental games? Or are her shots too good and frustrates the opponent?
Or is it just me? ;)

Somehow, when the Korean XD pair meets the Chinese pair, the former seems more asssured and confident of themselves. The Korean pair seems to understand each other better and therefore has the advantage and upper hand.
When Ra Kyun Min plays in the LD, she isn't that devastating. But with Kim Dong Moon in the XD, she guards the net so well that nothing seems to get by her and she is so sharp with her smashes and net play. Often she is the one who creates the opportunities for Kim to finish off the rallies with powerful smashes.
I somewhat sense a slight dip in Gao Ling's play during the recent Southeast Asian Opens. She and her partner, Huang Shi have lost twice to their compatriots, Yang Wei & Zhang Jiewen at the S'pore Open and the just concluded M'sian Open.
Has Gao been distracted lately because of Chen Hong? On the other hand, Chen has found fresh energy in their relationship to feature in all the three Finals and won two of them!
It would appear to me that Gao is currently the weaker link in the Chinese XD configuration.

Maybe Zhang Jun should learn how to fast like some clever Malaysians.

Yang Wei/Zhang Jiewen supposedly has always been the strongest combination since the reshuffle in WD late last year. They had beaten Ge Fei/Gu Jun in the Chinese National Games final before. Zhang was down with appendicitis the beginning of this year and had to skip some tournaments and this is probably why their ranking has been lower than Wei/Zhao and Gao/Huang.
I believe Yang/Zhang might have made it three in a row had they not conceded a walkover in the Indonesian Open.
I agree with Loh that Ra/Kim look more confident than Zhang/Gao on court. Ra probably can't perform as well in WD because it is much more physically demanding on her part. It seems more and more difficult for Ra to recover from long tiring matches due to her age. Lee KW isn't powerful enough to share her load either.
Zhang/Gao are making each fight a closer one than the one before. And for WD, they have MANY pairs who can adopt the right strategy to wear Ra out, which might affect both her XD and WD (just like they did in WC2001).

Zhang Jun has one of the most powerful smashes that always creates problem to the female player on the other side. But other than that, Kim is better than him in all other areas. Ra can concentrate at staying in front and intercept shots, but Gao doesn't have to luxury of doing that.
