View Full Version : @ Vancouver Sept 13-15....
so one evening a couple of weeks ago, there was this conversation at j&k's :
k : "work is too hectic, let's go for a vacation.."
j : "yes!"
k : "where would be fun? let's go LA, USOpen is there. there will be good badminton too"
j : "let's go Mexico. food is cheap."
k : "but there is hurricane..."
k : "let's go vancouver, never been there, there is good food i heard. can play badminton too."
j : "yeah... food in Vancouver is very good..."
after some discussion and debate, based the follow criteria:
LA : good badminton, food ok, friends there, been there.
Mexico : no badminton, hurricane, kinda far, food cheap, know nobody.
Vancouver : good badminton, food excellent, never been, friends there.
the decision was made (by janet based mainly on the good food) : Janet & Kwun will be heading up to Vancouver for a weekend! specificly, we will be flying up on saturday morning, and then leaving on monday evening. i hope too meet some of you BF'er there and play some badminton too!!

Sounds like a good time for yet another BF Western Canada Fun Night... We could either meet up at the Vancouver Racquets Club, or book a few courts for several hours at Clearone. Let's get a show of hands who will show, and preferred location...

Welcome Kwun. You should enjoy your visit to Vancouver.
Badrad, not sure how many interested to join and if everybody can drop in at VRC. If not probably renting/drop in ClearOne would be preferable. Just my thought.

Will Vancouver BC folks consider going to the airport and open up a big big banner "Welcome Janet & Kwun"? :)
See you soon, Kwun.

We can do both! Clearone one night, VRC the other. Pick which works best for most of us.
pros and cons... VRC may be busy at some times, and some BF'ers may have worn out their guest priviledges, but you can play all day and night until your legs and lungs fall out.
Clearone - booking or drop-ins are limited, but is open to all players on first come first serve basis.

09-06-2003, 12:22 PM
I would say Clearone due to the fact that we probably will have quite a few BF'ers and not sure if we will have enough members to sign all the guests in (plus probably will piss off the other regular members if 10 guests showed up all at one time). :D
Badrad, wanna check with Daryl regarding either Sat PM/evening or Sun AM? I got stuff on Sun PM. I am not sure if Kwun/Janet would want to play Sat PM (since they will be driving up from Seattle). All in all, I can only spare a couple of hours (family wants my time too since I have been working in Victoria and only see them on weekends) and Clearone is probably better for me :D
Gotta keep in mind that we need to ensure that Kwun/Janet gets good food too.
you guys are so spoiled to have choice of places to play on every hour of the day! i wasn't aware that playing in the morning is an option... ;)
janet and i are flexible. either or both days. AM or PM is good for us. VRC or ClearOne. as long as there is badminton!
we will be driving up from Seattle, traffic allowing, we should be in Vancouver around 2pm or so.

How about this schedule?
Saturday evening - 8-11(?) Clearone - Book 2 courts for 3 hours?
Sunday morning, afternoon, evening - VRC. Paying the drop-in fee for VRC does allow one to play for the entire day. Take breaks for dim-sum, and dinner and late snack. We could arrange with different groups for various times to keep Kwun well accompanied.
How about Monday morning?

So Kwun will be spending his time in the badminton court from Saturday to Monday (non-stop for badminton) except taking some breaks for dim sum and snack.
I will be available for Sat. night and Mon. morning. I am not sure for Sunday, for the time being.

In the evening, ClearOne's regular schedule is for drop-ins instead of court rental though. We'll need to talk to Darryl to make some kind of arrangement if we want to do this.
I injured my shoulder last week, and I don't know if I could recover in time to join in on the badminton. Nevertheless, I'll at least stop by to meet Kwun.

Hey Kwun. Just a friendly reminder that badminton racquets are not allowed as hand-carry luggages on the plane. Airport security will not let them pass through. You must check them in as checked-in luggages.

The airlines have guidelines stating that tennis and squash racquets are not allowed as carry-ons. They make no mention of baddy racquets, but from my personal experience, airport security (at least the ones in Toronto and Vancouver) will not allow us to take them into the cabin.
Security measures seems to be a little more lenient in Asia, as a few of my friends have brought their baddy racquets over as carry-ons before. But to be perfectly honest, I agree with the policy. Our racquets may be delicate and fragile, but it could be used as a weapon.

badrad, you think we are superman? :)
playing saturday night sounds cool. either gym is ok. will let you guys sort out which gym is more plausible regarding limited drop-in (C1) / guest drop-in (VRC). didn't you guys do a big BF meet before in VRC?
janet isn't too keen on Sun AM, i think she needs her beauty sleep..
i mailed ChiHo and he is leaving for a company event on saturday night, he suggested that we go to VRC in the afternoon. and then he leaves and you guys go join us in the evening.
Traum, thanks.... i think it depends on the airline + luck , i managed to bring it in sometimes but sometimes we get turned down as well...

oh c'mon! certainly children of your age can go on endlessly? hey, just a few weeks ago mrs. badrad and I had a 24hour badminton session with a few Japanese visitors. Are you saying you can't keep up with aged people? Ahhhh..... sounds like a challenge....
ChiHo's plan sounds good tho'. Saturday afternoon at the VRC, then take dinner break, and we meet up with the other group later the evening. Your fee for VRC is good for the day, so you have in/out priviledges.
Just note that Saturday afternoons have some time reserved for juniors, and there tends to be a lot. The evening, seniors have the priority.

well on saturday there is junior group training from 9am - 7:30pm, therefore there will be only 3 courts avaliable for general use during that time.
http://www.vrc.bc.ca/badmintonschedule.html
so here is a plan. (woo...)
ChiHo , PeteLSD (+bro?) , Janet&Kwun , (badrad?) will be playing at VRC from 3-6pm. then we all head off to dinner.
then at 8pm, we head back to VRC, the main gang of BF'er will be there and we will play till our legs falls apart. i will make sure i bring extra powerbar / gatorade / water, and also ankle/knee braces for the extra support. if possible, i will bring a oxygen tank in case i collapse on the floor and need help breathing.
if interested, anybody can join us for dinner as pre-badminton social. probably light dinner as it will be before the game... or if there are 24hr food (noodles? pho?) places, we can have snacks afterwards.
janet is concerned about the dinner. she said she need to be fed well to play good badminton. help me out here guys. got any suggestions?

Fed well? HON'S Chinese Restaurant is fabulous for that (Robson location - close but no parking, Richmond location - car parkade + good food), and for 24 hour eatery, No.9 Restaurant in Richmond is good for congee's, noodles, fried rice etc.

Hey Kwun I hope you'll have a good time here in Vancouver. I just hope when you come, it won't rain. It was raining yesterday. If your girlfriend likes shopping, you can't miss metrotown centre. I just found out I will be taxi-ing little badrad for a small fun tournament on Saturday afternoon over in West Vancouver. So I will have to meet up with you later at 8 or 8:30, or we could link up during dinner depending on your timing and choice of eatery.
If you want to stay close to the neighborhood at the VRC, there are plenty of decent little restaurants along Main street, Cambie or even Fraser, all within 5 to 10 minute drive from the club.
And there are also many late night (early morning) snack places as well to keep the hungry warriors fed. Variety is there suit any taste and pocketbook.

another plan would be playing from 12am midnight to next morning or whenever because at night the club should be pretty much empty which will leave all courts to the bfers , if so many guestsis going on saturaday night plus the reg which is also a lot ..i doubt people will get to play much.. people will sit out waiting more than playing... just a thought

There may be a number of other members who can help with sign in. but they may show up later (9/9:30). We can play by ear how many members we need.
The nice thing is that even with long waits, we couild play later into the evening.
Mrs. badrad has to work early on Sunday morning, so we will not be able to stay later than midnight, although we could each drive our own cars and I stay later. --- Or I could just sleep in the club until next day when mrs. badrad picks me up after work. --- or maybe the bus terminal... or at Stanley Park... oh well, nothing new here.

Luckily, a few VRC-BF.com members managed to track me down at VRC and ClearOne. You can definitely count me in on the festivities.
I'll be available for Saturday afternoon and evening. Unfortunately, not for dinner though as I have a family function to attend. But late-night snack is definitely a go! :D I might be good to go on Sunday too... if I can still walk (I have a varsity badminton team try-out in the afternoon from 1-3pm, followed by training at ClearOne from 5:30-7:30PM). Hmmm... now that I think of it, that's kinda brutal . Maybe I'll just show up and help sign guests in on Saturday and Sunday :D.
My wife will be joining us on Saturday evening and maybe Sunday as well. I've also contacted WilloW who's also a VRC-BF.com member about this weekend. He's planning on coming out Saturday evening. So there's two more VRC members to help sign guests in Saturday evening.

If you want more play time after the Saturday night (if Kwun and Janet don't have as much energy as us oldies) we could get some more playing Sunday with our annual group Viver and WWC maybe. I'm available Sunday morning and afternoon if WWC and Viver want to set up something at Clearone. Maybe some of the other BF'ers who can't make it Saturday would like to try that arrangement as well.
Since you are leaving Monday evening, I could also arrange my meetings on Monday to the afternoon and we could go to the VRC on Monday morning. There's a small group there that are good players and can give a tough game.

A practical question for me is how the non-VRC members would be able to get in. As in physically getting into VRC. Somehow I have this impression that VRC's doors are locked, and you either need a key to get in, or you need to press a buzzer to get someone from the office to let you in.

The entrance to VRC is always locked and requires a member's key to get in. In the evening after everyone in the office and proshop leaves it can be quite difficult getting in by using the buzzer. The buzzer doesn't ring everywhere in the club, only in the office, proshop, and within earshot of the entrance. So guests showing up late will have to rely on luck of someone walking through the front foyer. I suggest the guests setup a meeting time with a member. If guests show up at all different times it will be difficult for both guests and members.

Gee, skipping Seattle while you're here, even though Vancouver has better badminton (especially facility wise, I almost kissed the floor the first time I was
at VRC) and food. We do have a place to play on Saturday from 2 pm to 5+pm
(close to Seatac airport) and it's generally not crowded. You're welcome to stop by,
play badminton at Seattle from 2 to 5, and drive to Vancouver (border crossing
line will definitely be shorter at this time) for dinner and play the rest of the
night/morning at VRC.

Almost missed this one too. I be at VRC sat evening. PM me any extra instructions if you need to have people signed in as guests etc.
Since the summer is just over, VRC has been extra busy in the evenings right up to about midnight' If so many guests are dropping in, would be better if we focus our time for after midnight. Otherwise the first few hours are just sitting around and chatting.

Considering your call-sign, it's not in sync.
3-6pm *(approx times) - afternooon badminton - VRC. Current participants: Chi-Ho, Kwun, Janet, Cooler?, SChan, PeteLSD, Danny(?). Others welcome.
6pm leave for dinner. Place TBD - How about Honolulu on Main St. Close by and easy to order and relatively inexpensive meals. Kwun - do you have any preference of cuisine?
Current participants: Kwun, Janet, Cooler(?), PeteLSD+ Danny, Badrad/Mrs, Wood22Chuck + 1. Others welcome.
8-12+? Back to VRC for more playing until limbs fall off or someone collapses from exhaustion.

Just found that I have a dinner thingy tomorrow and not sure what time it will end (probably after 11pm :( which means that I will only be able to make it out after 12 midnight).
I am trying to figure out alternatives (Sat PM is out as the wife is working and I have the kids and ditto for Sun AM). Hmmm...I do have Monday off and should have a couple of hours after dropping the kids at school in the morning...
Will have to play it by ear and if I can't play, I will try and drop by to chat.

But just remember, they do audit the sign-in guest book against fees collected, so make sure your guest pay the fee or else the club member gets the bill later on.

then a late night snack and it was goodnight for Kwun and Janet (who was nodding off ever so slightly having been up since 5am the day before).
Well, a great turnout -

we so thoroughly enjoyed our games janet was already asking when we are heading to vancouver again.
it was very very nice to meet everybody and everybody was so friendly! i apologize as there are a couple of you who came up to me saying hi but even though i promised, i never got a chance to play a game with. we will make it up next time..

Hey kwun. Glad to hear that you and Janet had an awesome time here in Vancouver. You've got to come back again!
For your hi-res digital photos, Ofoto is certainly decent place, but I personally prefer Sony's Image Station since they allow you to store (and others to access) the hi-res version of the pictures. This is something that Ofoto doesn't seem to allow.
But either way, I'm sure everyone will be happy as long as we can see them somewhere.

I got to visit many places that i want to see and experience in vancouver as well. Yah, I missed vancouver's weather and food already. It was warm when i left vancouver and after the 1 hour flight, it was only 5 degree C with cold drizzle when i've landed, and my lawn is now covered with snow when i woke up today. i think it was best left without the rubber match. i think you two are a big contributing factor to the size of the blister i got on my feet.
that two mixed games must have been the best mixed games i have played for a while. i too tried to make sure that badrad got his share of court coverage. i think it started to have its effect at the second half of the second game. ;)
janet was obviously rather overwhelmed by the speed of the opponent, the next day she insisted that we had played 3 games instead of 2. i was like, "huh?"

yes! when we were having our late night snack after the games, i realized that the last time i played till so late was exactly one year ago with you guys after the USOpen, the same exact weekend!
it has now become an annual event. :)

Sorry that I couldn't stay on Sat night to play more with you guys. It was great to play with you guys on Sat afternoon.
hey Kwun, I think we partnered together well in the double game! It was particularly fun since we haven't seen each others for sooo long :) Anyway, I think you should make it an annual event and come over to every year. It was just simply too much fun.

As an annual event, let's see if other BFer's from various locals create their own BF Day on this anniversary date. The objective will be:
1: Gathering of as many BFer's as possible, far and near.
2: Number of games played must be as a minimum, that defined by the founder's endurance. I think 20 games, wasn't it?
3: Must at least past midnight, but the later the more prestige. Kwun's record as stated during late night snack was 4-6 AM as per last years USOpen.
4: Share a meal, either before, after or during. Or all of the above.
5: Inflict as much physical torture to fellow BFer's during the session as humanly possible.
6: Laugh your butt off with fun!
Fell free to modify or add to the objectives list.
Hey with technology, there must be a way we could webcam some of the events according to time zone.
more photos here, we took 11 photo (only. :( ) with my camera. i decided to upload the identical sets to both ofoto and imagestation. here are the links:
ofoto:
http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=pnzhuwb.8xe33bjr&x=1&y=3qiezp
imagestation:
http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4289104687&code=6508248&mode=invite
enjoy!
let me know if it doesn't work...
badrad, that's an excellent idea! considering the time zones spreading around the world, we can have non-stop BF badminton action for one whole day!
point 3 can be tough in some countries though.
webcam, that's an interesting idea. my cellphone has digital service which allow me to connect wirelessly with a laptop, but unfortunately that service is not available when i am Canada.
you better persuade the ppl who organize the "fun tournament" on sunday to schedule it on every 2nd sunday of september.... ;)

...too bad I'd never did managed to hook up with you guys over the weekend. I tried getting hold of folks to see if there were anything planned for Sunday but to no avail.
Cooler managed to get hold of me and we spoke for a while but unfortunately wasn't able to hook up on Monday.
Good to hear that it was a very enjoyable evening. The pictures posted by Kwun on Imagestation are so clear that you can actually tell who's who :D

It was really a superb night of badminton. Haven't played that many games in a long time. Got to know a few of the posters here too, which was excellent. Kwun really is a fountain of energy. Janet is not far behind playing until quite late. Cooler also was present and was happy to play a few games with him. Hope we have more of this types of gatherings. It's really starting to become a international event. :D
I still have my arms and legs sore, but worth it. Looking for more.

What a funtastic day it was; from afternoon to evening, to the wee hours! Too bad I missed out on dinner and the first half of the evening session. I think I didn't get to meet a lot of the non-VRC guests that showed up because of it? In the afternoon it was really neat to watch the highschool reunion of ChiHong and Kwun play together. They looked like brothers! As usual, I had a blast making new friends in Kwun, Janet, and Cooler. And it's always a real pleasure to meet up with the friends I've already met in the past meetings. I also got a chance to play with some other guests although I'm not sure if they're BFers or not. All in all, a truly festive day of badminton. I only wish my average badminton session was nearly as fun! It's good to see that all the out of town friends got home safely, thank you so much for visiting us, and I hope you guys get a chance to come visit us again. You guys rock! :D:cool:

sad...sighhhhh nah, you were doing okay. you got some good shots, just try to remember to recover everytime you make a shot, so that you are ready for the next one.
the objective for the night was for fun and getting to know each other better. i think that we had a great chance to strengthen the ties of many of the BFer's around town. if the objectives were different like a tournament, we would all likely play differently than this social fun night.

I apologized three times as many that I nailed you :D (unintentionally). It's just uncanny how you receive smashes with your neck/face area instead of your racket!
Good suggestion by Badrad: recovery after your shots back to a basic ready stance would help tons.

TTT: if that's a target area where you seem to be getting hit - just get into the habit of sticking your racquet in front of those spaces. You might be quickly surprised how the shot destined for your head pops back over to your opponent's side from a good block.
Also, you being relatively tall, if it's going to hit your head and you are standing at the baseline - practice your MATRIX style shuttle avoidance techniques. It's likely the shuttle is headed on it's way out of the court....

Just to let you guys know that TXYU is planning to come down next Friday (Sept 26th) and stay until Saturday. Would like to meet up with folks at the VRC Friday evening.
I, unfortunately, will be on the ferry coming back and should arrive sometime after 9pm and if I am lucky could meet up at the VRC around 11pm-ish.
BTW, TXYU would need to borrow some racquets before I get there with my trusty MM200, MM100.

TTT, I think you should be more confident in yourself. When I watched you play throughout the night you were doing fine. However, in some games you seem to lose confidence, or get too nervous, and then make errors that you normally might not make. Just do your best all the time and you're bound to improve.

Expecting a certain type of shot is fine, but you need to also ensure your mind is prepared to receive any type of shot from your opponent. When Mrs Badrad and I played you and Smashingbird last Sunday night, we had loads of time to watch you both and waited for you to get ready for a specific shot, then we tried something a little different to see how you react. Actually quite a few times you were in the right place, but your racquet was not in the right place so you weren't able to take advantage of the situation.
Just as a mental note for the next little while that you play - after every shot you make, force yourself to bring your racquet up to at chest level, instead of leaving it dragging near your knees. This will help you a bit in getting ready for the next play.
Wow! What a smashing time you all had!
Congrats to all you Vancouver BFers for contributing to such a smashing success at VRC. Did you surpass our S'pore Open by playing past 3 am the next morning? I missed all the earlier fun and would have missed this thread had not Kaffie (from Singapore) told me about it.
I'd loved to be there with you all and I'm sure many others esp. LB, Cheung, Kaffie and perhaps Mag had similar views.
Kwun and Janet must have been overwhelmed by your reception and despite his two painful blisters attibuted to one "grandpa", Kwun seems not to mind too much.
Thanks to the logical deduction of LB, I now know who the "crafty 16-year old folk" is and I can now place a face to the name whenever he shows up in this forum. Unfortunately, I am still at a loss as to what Kwun looks like as the pic is not too clear and there were a few guesses of the man. I assume he must be the "corner" man at the extreme left of the group pic. I managed to get into Image Station, but not the earlier one, for the pix.
It will be a great idea to have an annual around the clock, borderless, BF Day Fun Tournament where we have a good number of BFers. I'm sure Singapore will qualify and the organization of this tourney should pose not too much of a problem since we have a rather supportive badminton infrastructure and the geographical size of Singapore is no bigger than that of a big town in a big country like Canada.
Keep the BF flag flying high!

...TXYU and I managed to get ourselves over to the VRC around 9:45-ish along with SmashingBird. BF-ers included PeteLSD, Marky, WilloW, Viver & Timeless. I think Seot were there but didn't get the opportunity to play with him.
All the games were fun and it was quite a busy night which didn't quiet down until after 11:30pm.
We had a couple of good games against PeteLSD/Marky. ditto for Viver/cousin. Sorry no pictures as none of us bother to bring a camera. SmashingBird as usual, was hopping all over the court (haaa...to be young and quick again).
