Hi, last night from around 11pm PST till sometime this morning, there was a power failure in the hosting company that hosts BC / BF. as a result, BC / BF was offline for a few hours.

i hope that didn't cause too much inconveniences to everybody. i was a little bit nervous about it hoping that all the data are stilll intact, and of course suffered a bit of BF withdrawl...

but everything are back to normal now.

here is the email i just received from the administrator:

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to take a minute to apologize to everyone for the trouble that we experienced last night. I also wanted to let everyone know exactly what happened yesterday evening to cause the sites to be inaccessable and what we are doing to make sure it doesn't happen again. More than anything, I want to thank everyone for their patience, prayers and kindness during the downtime. You are all truly blessings. :)

Last night, we suffered a fire on the 3 floor of our building that was not related to the power source but within power switching equipment within the building.

The fire department mandated around 7pm that all main and auxiliary power be closed down. At that point, our Disaster Recovery Plan was activated which worked nearly flawlessly.

The only thing that went wrong in the plan is that we weren't able to get the information out to you so that you knew what was going on. I am very sorry about that and we will work for an alternate site off network to provide that information should it happen again.

The good news is all technical positions reported quickly to their posts and were ready, willing, and able to help -- despite the risk of smoke inhalation they were working hard to make sure client servers were shut down properly.

Around 9:45 power was restored, but then the electricians found another problem and forced a hard shut down of power which forced most of the servers that were coming up to go down hard. This caused the unfortunate situation of a longer term downtime due to servers needing to do disk checks when the power came back on.

The company must be feeling a bit nervous that this episode will cause some clients to move their accounts.

well, to be fair, the hosting company has been pretty good. we have been with them for nearly 3 years and aside from one disk failure and this long downtime, they have been very good and professional.

however, the past few months, there has been a big increase in traffic and the hosting plans that they offer no longer can accomodate BC/BF. as a result i am paying a lot of penalties every month for the over usage. so i have plans to move to a new host and plan so we will not have any more problem with bandwidth and also get better resource available. we will see ....

rackshack.net offers server leasing:
you get a dedicated server with 700gb transfers a month. Since you get your own system, that's presumably 40-80 gigs. Only $90usd a month which is pretty good for a dedicated server. That should meet your needs...

Kwun,

Any time u want to reactive "Donation" thread, please feel free to do so. If there's a financial problem, please let us contribute our little share as well. I am sure there are a lot of members willing to help out.

I just feel a little bit guilty to let u to cover the $$$ issue urself.

i was actually thinking about servermatrix. $80 for 750G (pretty much equal unlimited ;) )

the package in rackshack.net is for windows only...

both places have pretty good reviews.

I just installed an AOL DSL line at home and was trying to connect the home network to the DSL line. It was past midnight EST when I was testing the wireless link. Everything was going smoothly, then I kept getting the "cannot find server" message when I tried to get on BC/BF. So I thought...oh no... But I could get on other sites, so I concluded it must be your @#$% server:D

If you consider 700 gigs unlimited, perhaps you could consider a smaller but cheaper plan? (Afterall, why pay for 700 gigs if you aren't going to use it all!)

dr2.net has this plan for only $16 a month or 160 a year:
1 gig space
30 gig transfer

for each extra $10 a year you can add 2gig bandwith monthly or 100mb web space.

The company is run by a great guy with excellent help forums. It supports php. I should know because i'm with them now. It's a shared server but the cpu usage rarely goes over 50%, and i can always download at my maximum line speed so it's not on a overcrowded server.

I'd highly recommend this place if you're bandwidth is under 50 gigs a month. There is no service charge if you go over the limit. But of course he'll cancelle your account if you always do of course. I've gotten 500% over my limit many times and he's cool with it.
