i have to shut down the site .... as the hosting provider has increased the server rental to USD$499 due to the amount of bandwidth that it is using.

i've tried to support the site by introducing membership account, but too bad it's not even enough to cover a quarter of the monthly costing.

So does that mean we are never gonna see badmintoncity.com anymore :(? Maybe you can try to get some sponsors or banners?

swijaya,

sorry to hear that you have to shut it down, it was a great resource!

do you know if the bandwidth usage was due to the subscribers or was it due to the freely available videos? my guess is that it is due to the freely available video, and if that's the case, i suggest you remove those and only allow subscribers to download. or perhaps leave one or two good ones public to show others what quality videos you are offering.

kwun has a point. but even so, videos at mpeg2 format are impractical for
download and hurts both the server (increased bandwith costs and fewer
people can even think of downloading so why bother subscribing...) and the
potential subscribers (don't have a fast enough connection so too bad and
some broadband providers even have a monthly bandwidth cap in place.)
to stand a chance, file sizes have to be reasonable and if image quality has
to be compromised to some extent, that's what we have to live with for today.
the investment is just too great both on the server and the client side.

So what happen to the folks who paid for subscriptions that are 3, 6 or 12 months long?

Is this a case of taking the money and running?

faisal,

it would be available again in 2-4 weeks time ... but i cant provide them freely ... i guess i would need to charge certain $$$ to cover for bandwidth usage. I have purchased a DVD recorder ... so all format would be in DVD minus format. You can either download or purchase the DVD at a very reasonable price.

kwun,

it's the free videos that kill the bandwidth usage and also the provider is not quite happy because the bandwidth resources that the server is using.

winex,

:D :D ... they are still there, because membership folder is kept on my 2nd server. Havent updated them quite lately, because i am converting worldchampionship + indonesia open into DVD quality and i have told them that they would be able to download these 2 tournaments eventhough their membership has expired.

here is another suggestion..

when i go on badmintoncity, i see alot of videos..

why cant you just post 10 up each week and delete the old ones and add new ones every week or limit the amount of videos posted so it wont take up that much space

anything would be fine i just want bcity to go back up i miss it

:(

it would even waste more of our time ... uploading 1 videos would take around 6-10 hours (provided it does not get disconnected).

space is not an issue ... as the server has 80GB

the bandwidth is the big issue ...

the only provider that provide unlimited bandwidth (fdcserver) has increased the pricing from USD$199 to USD$499 ... and they might increase the price if they found out we still disturb their network ... (so i have disconnected the server).

The current server i have, charge me USD$75 for every 50GB bandwidth that i use. So it's not possible for free download as i would be paying USD$3000 based on the average usage at badmintoncity.

A DVD quality will take around 2GB per match .... do you think USD$3-4 a reasonable price to charge per download?

alternatively i could burn into a DVD cds ... and send it over ... and roughly it will cost me USD$6.99

in a previous line of work, we had a joke: it is usually much faster and cheap to backup all data into tapes, fill up a big truck/lorry and drive it over instead of sending it through the network.

it may have been intended as a joke but it is indeed the sad truth and the
reason why night market piracy continues to thrive.
