Just a funny idea just came into my mind. Since tennis have hard , clay , grass court. Why don't badminton have Grass and Clay court? Have anyone tried playing badminton on these surfaces? Grass might not be possible..coz its slippery.

grass = backyard badminton

clay... = you dont even wanna try. much more slippery than grass it.

i think you said it, too slippery.

the ability to grip the court surface is one of the most fundamental assumption when playing badminton, there are just too many jumps, lunges, dash and changing direction in badminton. having a slippery surface will change the game completely. either that, or everybody will be injured.

clay is even more slippery than grass, no?

yup no traction on clay. if you slide, you keep on sliding.

you have more traction on grass only if its not wet. If its wet.... i hope you had enough milk this morning.

yeah. i agree. i think badminton the way it is played today will not be possible if there is any slipping at all.

i wonder though, what if badminton is played in a slippery surface? what will happen? will we be wearing studded shoes? how will the game look?

i mean, there is motorcycle racing on ice, there is ice skating, ice hockey, can we have ice badminton? or grass / clay badminton?

CLEATS! :D

i mean its entirely possible. interesting tho. cleats for the clay surface, golfer shoes for the grass :p but then you'd have to redraw the lines every 5 minutes on the clay court.

ive tried on grass but it was slippery and i nearly broke my ankle (twice). Its quite fun playing outside though. You have to adjust for the wind and everything.

well..i remember when i started off playing badminton..no training and it was just for fun. I was getting hooked and because i didn't have access to a gym at the time, i went out to my backyard and hit a few shots with my dad. Interesting, grip was okay because it was a dry day..don't think i'd do that nowadays.

I think if badminton is played on grass or clay.. yonex will surely come out with studded shoes.

I'm sure last time badminton is played on clay court. Maybe during that time the movement is slow and they are just hitting the ball. But now everything is so fast.. clay court is not suitable anymore.. even if you play.. by the time you finish the game , the shuttle would be brown in color.. heheh :)

Yeh if people play on clay they would probably be playing slower than normal or you could get hurt.

Not such a big deal, as I can remmber playing at a couple of clubs here who used to use gyms with lino floor on a concrete base - but I was much fitter then?!:D

Whenever I play on grass I won't be able to play properly. Why? Because I'm always afraid to step on some brownish substance that can be found in some fieldds. Stepped on it many times already when playing badminton in a grassy field. Maybe that's why I stopped playing in fields? Apart from the fact that my shuttle got stuck in a tree and my friends threw my racquet(they were using my spares) up into the tree and it got stuck there. My dad had to take the LADDER out to the field and on top of that use a long stick to get my racquet down. Since then I've made sure my friends never ever threw my racquet into a tree...

Joanne!!!!!!!!! :D

Imagine if your friends were throwing your TiSPSX or Ti10 or the newly bought AT700 up the trees to retrieve the shuttle... I think you'd scream until the clouds fall down... :) (Not only you, most of us would too!)

Lol yes I would have. It was a good thing my spares that I lent them were free ones I got for going to a badminton camp, not too good. And they threw it without my knowledge, all I know one moment I'm serving next someone's shouting "Joanne!! Your racquet's stuck in the tree!" At least they never did it again because I threatened not to lend them my racquets anymore if they did it again. :D

Funny.. even if they didn't throw the racket up the tree.. imagine they are throwing the nice yonex shoes up the tree to get the shuttle.

We were playing on a grassy field so we didn't wear badminton shoes. Besides, anyone who takes badminton seriously has enough sense not to throw racquets into trees.

About the clay part, won't the badminton hall be all dusty? Imagine all the spectators coughing and rubbing eyes. The players will have to wear goggles then. Come to think of it, parquet(Did I spell it right?) or cemented floor is better?

Not really. Cement and parquet aren't as good as synthetic rubber courts. But I doubt clay would cause any the dust to fly etc, but it may have to be played outdoors (which is a taboo if it it's windy). Same with grass, but you can do power-slides though.

There in an indoor tennis court though.. but it is not that dusty... I think the clay particle is too heavy to fly around.

Joanne

Somehow it will still affect the players right? Surely some dust will go into players eyes. How come clay can be considered to be more slippery? Isn't grass more slippery?

Dust will go into player's eyes and clothes and shoes. How can clay be more slippery? Simple. If you watch the French Open from the sport of tennis, you'll see players slip and slide all over the court because the clay is loose, lots of dust, but loose so you can slip on it, and it provides and advantage.. sort of. I've seen alot of players slip because of the clay. Grass would be like Wimbelton; or however you spell it. You don't see that many players slip on it unless its wet. Thats because the grass is cut to be about 1/2 inch or less i believe, so you still have better traction than clay. But you WILL slip on any court as it is.

I think the main criteria for choosing a badminton court is whether wind is present. Because as you have already noticed that when playing outdoors, the wind has definitely more control of the shuttle than you. Therefore, most badminton courts are built indoors. And since these courts are indoors, there's only a limited choices in what material should be used.

I really can't imagine what would be served by playing on different surfaces. I play on three different surfaces already (cement, wood, and taraflex) and except for the wear and tear on my knees, it doesn't really matter.

Using tennis surfaces don't make much sense either. Tennis surfaces are key because they alter the behavior of the ball. Something that will not change in badminton.

What could be interesting though is having different tournaments with different shuttles. I play horribly with plastic shuttles, pretty decently with slower feather shuttles and best with fast feather shuttles.

Shuttles do force you to adapt. I don't know, maybe it will create different play strategies. For example, I know that when I play with shuttles that are slow, I don't smash as much since they're that much easier to return.

It might be an idea, who knows?

Hmmm slower shuttle on a grass court? :)

Joanne

Then why will it be slower?

ants
10-11-2003, 10:55 AM
It will be slower if you get a shuttle with a slower speed. :)
