View Full Version : Titanium Again
Byro-Nenium 04-07-2001, 10:21 PM I've brought this up many times, just wanted to hear what other people say about it.......
What improvements does Titanium make to a racket/string?
Whats it supposed to do?
Why do they do it?
thanx for all replies
shaun 04-07-2001, 10:33 PM Titanium does nothing to the racquet, but instead, does something for the company who uses it-it brings in a major amount of profit. Having the words "Ti" written on the racquet gives them all the rights to jack up the prices because everyone is hyped about Ti. But realistically, Ti mesh wrapped around graphite in "strategically located positons" does utterly NOTHING because these Ti mesh is only about 1inch long and doesnt even wrap around the whole frame. Because it doesnt wrap around the whole frame, there is NO way it can reinforce the frame in ANY WAY.
all it does is sit there and look kool...but thats it.
This is what I think... Many ppl may think i'm ignorant because i've said this...but really, think about it...having Ti mesh is like wrapping a bandaid around ur frame and saying the bandaid will reinforce the frame...NO IT WONT...Ti mesh is only MESH..mesh is weak and flexible....
I have a Airblade 2000. The racquet has titanium reinforcement meshed into the frame. The frame seems to be very stiff and strong as a result. I strung it to 25 pounds with BG 65. However, I can't say if there is any other benefits. May be I will string it to 32 pounds next time! :))
Byro-Nenium 04-07-2001, 11:06 PM So its just a marketing gimmick? U mean, when you play with Ti rackets and non Ti rackets you don't find any difference?
I feel that Ti rackets have less vibrations. Even when the normal racket has the same string at the same tension
shaun 04-07-2001, 11:09 PM Pete, ur frame is a high tension design frame, of course it feels stiff and solid. That feeling doesnt come from the Ti though, it comes from the frame material and design itself. The mesh wont do that much. Bryo, havent played with a Yonex Ti, but I have played with Wilson Ti, and BK Ti...they are garbage and do nothing heh. I dont want to say that Ti racquets=crap...because most of the Yonex Ti racquets are really really good, but what i mean is that the Ti "technology" doesnt do anything much.
its just a marketing gimmick
i think that ti makes the head heavier and much power generated ...i looks cool with ti mesh...to me,i am ti fans
shaun 04-07-2001, 11:43 PM Ari, TI doesnt make the head heavier....Ti in yonex is a mesh...mesh weighs almost nothing....its the isometric design that makes the head seem heavier.
anyway I believe that Ti isnt such a smart investment because there are many complaints saying that Ti is fragile...whats the point of buying a good expensive racquet if it wont last....unless money isnt a concern to you of course...
I agree with u Shaun, I think the Ti-Mesh is just crap. I say to get a muscle power fram instead because it adds more weight to the head. IMO i think that if u really want a Ti-Mesh racquet, go for Winex racquets because they have more MESH in it.
shaun 04-08-2001, 12:42 AM yep! everyone listen to zero~!
Thomas 04-08-2001, 02:07 AM It doesn't bother me at all whether the racket is Ti or not as long as it fits my style and that I am enjoying using the racket and winning the games! I've been playing from the days of wooden frame->all-alluminium->carbon shaft->carbonex-> and now Titanium. Now I play with Ti-10 and I have absolutely no conmplaint because this particular racket fits me well. Now if you were to take away the Ti mesh and that the racket still perform well, I'll still use the racket. Honestly, there're lots of so-called Ti rackets in the market and they are really cheap and they have wrap-around printed fake mesh at the 9 and 3 o'clock and to me, these are real nonsense and garbage.
Well, I own a iso900 SX and a Ti sp SX, both are strung with gb85 at 22 lbs and when comparing the two I find that the Ti sp is stronger. but hey thats my opinion nothing scientific.
Brett 04-08-2001, 10:11 PM Shaun, your comments about the merits of adding a metal mesh to give strength apply pretty well to a graphite racquet, but not across the board for all materials that incorporate a metal mesh. Various types of metal meshes (much much larger than in a racquet) are used in concrete construction and other products, such as larger ceramic items, to give greater strength to the overall object.
I think the use of titanium is completely marketing hype as it applies to racquet sports. I still want to grab a couple of Wilson, Dunlop or Penn materials engineers and shake them until they admit that there is no possible purpose, other than riding the current sales trends, for putting titanium or any other metal in a tennis ball (or golf ball either).
I predict that Yonex will start marketing Ti shuttles soon.
cooler 04-08-2001, 10:23 PM yes, the goose in the yonex farm will be fed with a titaium supplement so the feather would be stronger and longer lasting.
Hoang Nguyen 04-08-2001, 11:55 PM hahaa that's funny! and yea the Ti thing. I own 4 of them. all top of the line. and they are just like the rest of the other rackets. it's just the name of the racket that makes it Powerful.
R u studying physics or Chemistry???? If u r, go to this webbie, www.chemicalelements.com
Byro-Nenium 04-10-2001, 09:15 AM I don't take Physics anymore but i still take Chem
hmmmmmmmm........ I wanna take pure sciences in sec 3. What's wrong with physics???? it's a bit boring though. I like chem and bio more. afterall, i want to become a microbiologist, medical engineer and lots more.
Pebulutangkis 04-11-2001, 02:15 AM i thought u wanted to become a badminton player?
cooler 04-11-2001, 02:43 PM that would be her minor degree, in badminton ;) Badminton players are talented people you know.
cooler 04-11-2001, 02:48 PM may, you shouldnrt view physics as boring as it has more real life practical usage than say chem or bio. Take badminton, i understand it deeply because of what i've remember of my early years in physics, even though i got higher marks from bio and chem.
***sighs*** okay, whatever.
I thought Byro-Nenium's a guy????? How come u use her and not he?????
