View Full Version : Goodbye MP-99 (yet another epitaph)
Well, well, I had just begun to feel really comfortable with my MP99, when it broke yesterday in a doubles clash. It was a 2U SP version bought in Kuala Lumpur this summer. I'm not surprised it broke as the clash was massive: I was rushing straight forward to kill a sloppy drop shot, it's clearly my shuttle, and suddenly my partner (not my regular partner btw) for some reason that is beyond me decides to go for it too, he jumps in diagonally, and well, bob's yer uncle. Bang!
Accidents happen. But of course, I'd rather break my own racquets than having them broken by somebody else... :p
Looking on the bright side, this leaves a slot to fill in my racquet bag! Shopping time! This time I'll probably get another MP-100 to accompany the one I've already got. It's still the best racquet I've ever had...
cappy75 12-02-2003, 03:36 AM Geez! Jumped diagonally for a net kill:eek:?! Is s/he a newbie? That's terrible! Man, this makes me want to put my old steelie back in my baddy bag in case I ever pair up with a crazy newbie. Did s/he offer to compensate?
Compensation? Naah, that's definitely not how it works around here. In any case, I wouldn't have accepted any such offers -- after all, nobody forced me into playing. But an excuse would have been nice, I guess... I suppose he didn't realise that he was causing it (which is odd considering that the guy's not a complete beginner...)
Not that it matters now, it's all part of the game. Just felt that a short "in memoriam" was called for... Goodbye "Yellow Fever"! :D
yonexfanatic 12-02-2003, 08:24 AM yes that's quite a shock to hear. it's painful enough when a clash does occur, you wonder whether the racket is damaged. just yesterday i was lunging for a shot, and because it was so low i ended up hitting my mp99 on the ground; luckily no damage. anyways, too bad about the 99 Mag. go for the 100, it's good to have the same racket as a backup.
moreyp 12-02-2003, 08:51 AM Must have been a bad day, I broke mine yesterday as well! Well actually someone else broke it for me. I someone borrow it and in the course of playing he framed a smash and collapsed the frame right at 3 o'clock.
Off to Yonex it goes!
I feel your pain Mag!
Sorry to hear that happen. So what Racket are you using now.
moreyp 12-02-2003, 12:23 PM Since Mag mentions his MP-100 I will assume you are asking me!
MP-55 is my backup.

same here. i think it is a unwritten rule that racket clashes are the liability of the holder of the racket. if you happen to be playing with a crazy guy who swings his steel racket full force with his eyes closed, then you should know better to stay away. otherwise, you can't blame anybody for cracking your racket.
cappy75 12-02-2003, 12:39 PM Is this where we badders get our cliquy-ness? Nobody wants to play with new people unless they have proven themselves... competent-wise?:p
I don't want to refuse anybody a game, so normally I use old racquets for such occasions.

I will still use my normal racquets , but if there is a potential racquet clash incident to get the ball. I will not reach for it. :)
cappy75 12-04-2003, 02:30 AM I learned my lesson after going through two expensive racquets in four months last year. Not something I would like to repeat... ever. Now if I know that my partner is a newbie, I will still play with him/her... but I will ask them to stay at the front at all times. Give them a little instruction and just play mixed formation. If they insist on deviating from the plan, I will replace my playing racquet with something a little more 'expendable'... and not play with them afterward.
Now, if that partner is a seasoned player... I would be more cautious and let them take the shot when it's questionable. However, Mag's situation is really tough considering it's clearly his shot (from his POV) when his partner intervened. Hope it doesn't happen too often.
jump_smash 12-05-2003, 12:40 AM After racquet clashes causing chips on MP 100 and then MP 99. The worst being after I first got my MP 100 a few years ago - I always use a backup racquet
when playing with new people.
P.S MP99 is better than MP100!

For you maybe.
Definitely not in my book. :p
I have an Mp-99, for about a year now. I don't know what I do if it got messed up...
I'll prolly just spend about another $200 on one. :p
wonger47 12-07-2003, 02:43 AM I know how you feel...i busted my MP99 to:(
