Hey guys, just wanted to know if there are any other places to play in the lower mainland. Personally i play @ Guildford Rec Center in Surrey, Thursday nights 6 30-845 and Sunday's 4- 745pm. They also have a saturday court @ 6 15- 745.

Cost is bout $4.50 drop in i believe but u'd generally have to book well in advance. they have 8 courts on thursdays and about 4-8 on sundays.

Any other information about other places would be very appreciated as playing 2 days a week is well, kinda weak to me. Not enough!

Cheers!

Collingwood House: Sundays 12 - 2:30, $5 ($2 at the door, $3 to Karl, organizer), feather birds are included.

Cameron Center: Mondays 7:15 - 9:15, $3.55

Brittania: Fridays 7 - 11 pm, I believe ... and Sat 12 - 3:30 pm, think it's $2

Renfrew: Sun/Tue 8 - 10 pm $4 (not sure), but feathers included.

Pinetree (Coquitlam): 8 - 10 pm $4

Have fun!

Britannia on Fridays are only from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, and the cost is $3.50, I think. Also, if you want to play at SFU, I think you'll need a SFU athletics shoe tag.

And then there's ClearOne. Drop-ins from 7:30 to 10pm in the evening (usually 3 courts), and from 8 to 11pm on Fri and Sat (4 courts). It's $6 a pop at C1.

There is!!!! MOre in Bonsor

Teen Badminton Thursdays and Fridays from around 4:15-ish to 7:00 with a $1.85 drop-in, there are 6 courts open on thursdays and 8 court open on Fridays
Bonsor is where alot of Beginner/Intermidiate Players go to, and some times some really advance players shows up, and its always really crowed!!
And on Saturday I also go and Play At Burnaby South Secondary, with a $1.85 drop it from 12:00 -2:30 6 to 9 courts depending on the amount of people that show up.
Bby South are where More Strong players show up to.
And on Friday back @ Bonsor again for adult Badminton Which i dont' think im allow in ^^" from 9:00 to 11:00-ish, with 8 courts for around $4.00 i think, and
Family badminton with 2 courts ~.~ from 11:00 to 12:30 which allows in 18 People (which is ridiculous)

When ever i head back home in between semesters I usually go to Cambie Community Centre in Richmond to play. It's from 11:30am to 2:30pm on weekdays.

Actually i'm looking forward to checking out ClearOne because i've heard/read a lot of good things about it from other posters in the forums. FYI: Coming to Vancouver for the Xmas holidays on Dec 20th. till some time after New Years. PM me if you're looking for a player or just interested in having some fresh "blood" over. I'm an intermediate/club player and social.

Ciao.

Hey guys,

I doubt that I could make any BF gathering, let alone drop-in for games, until at least 2nd week of January. Plan is to leave around Boxing Day so I will miss out on the fun for sure:(. However, I am really looking forward to matching friendly BF user names with friendlier faces:).

You should! I've always wondered what the SOTX racquets were like. That initial demo you received last year seemed to be good quality. Try to keep the grip sizes smaller than YY G3 (including overgrip) though eh? ;) :D

Hi guys,

Just wanted to know when would be the best time to drop by ClearOne? I would love to play some competitive games. Please let me know if the majority of the people are playing elsewhere besides ClearOne. Thank you!

the holidays usually make a mess of community centers and schools due to closures and such. not sure how the holiday schedule affects ClearOne, although I heard Daryl is planning to take some time off so not sure if he has someone else taking care of the place while he is away.
I can make it most days, but Sunday dec 28 would probably be the best day for me if we all want to get together - maybe at Clearone?

Hey WWC. If you're gonna do a Winnex and SOTX demo session, I wonder if you'd be interested in allowing me to join you and turn it into a 3-way Winnex-SOTX-Pointfore demo night? After all, a little friendly competition never hurts, eh? :D

Getting back to the subject of a BF meet, I don't know know whether ClearOne would be the best choice for location. Somehow I don't think C1 would be able to accomodate all of us, judging by the showing we had last time kwun was here. The $10 VRC guest fee is steep, and it might take a bit of asking around to find enough VRC members to sign everyone in. But at least the facilities can fit everyone in, and we can play for as long as we want until our limbs fall out.

I second badrad's suggestion of doing a BF meet on Sun, Dec 28. However, may I propose that we hold it a VRC instead of C1?

-Rick The problem with the VRC is for potentially such a large group, there will be complaints from other members. Sundays are unpredictable, but usually afternoons are packed, and late evenings are as well if the main adult groups show up.
I got flack last time, but luckily there were less members that night so it wasn't that bad, but one of the regular members did mention it to the admin.

Hey badrad. Sorry to hear that our little gathering got the BF-VRC members in trouble. But my question is, since all of the non-BF members were signed in as guests by some other BF-VRC members, what is that person complaining about?! Seems to me that he is not very accomodating...

Getting back to the BF meet, if BreakMyStrings can indeed get tons of court time from Collingwood, would BF members be able to reserve ourselves a spot before everyone else? :D

That's fine with me. I think getting Collingwood is probably better than VRC or C1 as I don't they would appreciate us showing off SOTX, Winex & Pointfore products (I know for sure, VRC will throw a fit).

:( :( Sorry guys! :( :(

Collingwood Neighbourhood House will be re-finishing the gym floor along with the walls being painted.

But as wood_22_chuck knows, I am looking for some court-time for my "badminton fix" during the Holidays.

If I can book 3 or more courts for an extended period, sometime between now and New Years, I will post it on BF.

Please note, these types of bookings tend to be last minute and require a fast response time.

I guessed that did it. I went tonight to play and there is actually a table set up with a lady checking membership ID and that all guests are signed in and paid too. I got there around 9pm and I'm not sure how long the table was manned.

badrad
12-28-2003, 03:46 AM
the table security idea had been discussed over the summer, long before our little get together. there was originally thought to hire security guards for the night time, as many of the offenders will come late in the night, and use the facilities. actually most of the culprits are often ex-club members who take advantage of relationships to get free playing time. it has also become quite a problem on weekends, where guests outnumber members. but as long as guests pay, there really shouldn't be an issue, it's when they don't, it is an issue.

putting it bluntly, there are a lot of deadbeats that treat the club as public community and also try to sneak in as often as they can. as paying club members, we lose out since the membership we pay, and guest fees are used to pay for running the facility, maintenance and utilities. not only do deadbeats take our court time, they also incur costs such as hot water heating and lighting.

badrad, over here, in private clubs, if the freeloader is traced back to the member who let him in for free(easy task), that member get 1 warning at best, most clubs just de-member (for life) the violator on the spot with no refund. It is in the agreement that all members have signed. I dare any member would risk this penalty for saving 10$ for his friend. If that is not enough, being labelled as a co-cheater would make him a disgrace among the badminton circle. Sure make potential cheaters to think twice.

hahaha...I think for the badminton mafia/triads, we are looking at a version of the Cuban necktie as in Racquet Necktie!!!

I think that's one of the disadvantage of a 24x7 club in that it is very difficult to monitor access after prime hours.

badrad
12-28-2003, 06:28 PM
actually they can get more control of the club entry in the late hours if there was a better id recognition than the pass-key. the passkey has no id so there is no tracking ability of the key. it's more than simple enough using any rfid tag or even low tech barcode or magstripe cards will work.

making the lights controlled by user tag will also help with accounting and tracking. this way, energy can be better managed, and have some conditions for it's use.

Yeah but that still doesn't stop non-paying guests coming in with members after hours unless the facility is willing to invest in video monitoring (equipment and personnel).

Automatic shut-off for the lights could work if after activation with user tag, they will stay on if there is still movement on courts but if it is on timer after activation, then you could end up playing in the dark at crucial points.

Hey Yipom,

Were you at Burnaby South last Saturday morning? I went there for the first time and was quite impressed with the facility. Lighting was alright but half side of the courts facing the morning sun gets the sun in the backcourts. Flooring is decent. Six courts going with three more possible if there's more drop-ins.

Unfortunately, there's not alot of good players there. Some of the players from the school team were there though, I would have left if not for them. Court rotations are not consistent cuz you could find newbie drop-ins hogging the courts playing singles since nobody bothered with them. They only get off when the guy in charge checks in. Even after he exasperatingly requested no singles and tried to get rotation going, nobody bothered since no-one wants to play with newbies. All two hours to play and all I got was 4 games to show for:(.

What they need is better organization... get a baddy club come in and rent the place for that time. But it's not possible as I understand that the school opens the baddy courts to the public only on Saturdays.

Even though it's within walking distance from my home, I don't think I will be going back there anytime soon. I would only head out there if I get a full set of players for doubles (seems that's what the good players did... they basically played among themselves), otherwise it's not really worth it:(.

Hey Cappy. Burnaby South is the humongous highschool along Rumble, right? It's actually pretty close to where I am, about a 15 min drive. So if you need a body to go with you, just lemme know a few days earlier and I'll see if I can fit some baddy into my schedule.

Smashingbird- nah, it's just saturday afternoon (12pm-2:30pm). It's a highschool, so facility priority goes to the students and Sundays are closed unless they wanna pay custodial staff overtime to keep it open:(. I think drop-in fee is $4.50. Student rate is $2.

Sorry and very dissapointed to hear that, but since its still a (not as badminton popular) High school, there will be newbies there. Yea i think i did show up that day. Yea it basically is kinda like a Hang out place, so its always better to go with buddies, yea basical 1/3 of the people there were my buddies =p. Anyways sorry about that.

South's kinda desserted. I've seen Langara players play there once or twice, but they dont go often. I used to go once in a while, but I kinda just got lazy. Right now I'm suffering from multiple injuries that might just end my badminton career. O well, it was a good 2 years :p

Hey Yipom,

No worries... I must have picked the wrong time of the year to drop-in. It's not too bad once you have buddies to play with, but lone drop-in is not very rewarding. But that doesn't take away the fact that it's a very decent facility. Anyway, thanks for pointing out the place:).

Well @ BCIT i usually go with my friends on Sundays from 9am-2pm for only $5 ^^! lol, anyways ... yeah its pretty empty there, last time I went there were 3 Empty courts, and one group left @ around 11 o'clock... I guess they're goin "Yum Cha" or somthing ^^"... and more started to leave after...so during the last hour or so theres only around 3 groups left.

South's kinda desserted. I've seen Langara players play there once or twice, but they dont go often. I used to go once in a while, but I kinda just got lazy. Right now I'm suffering from multiple injuries that might just end my badminton career. O well, it was a good 2 years :p
say... who are you Yipom? Were you there say... 3 or 4 weeks ago? :)
Are langara team players very good?

Yes, they are very good.

My friend at the VRC says some of the best players around town come from that college.

Just reading Calvin's name brought back so many memories. Anyone here play at the VRC with some of the old original crew....Ong sisters (moira, elma), Billy Cheung, Morgan and Skyler Vanheukulum, Chu brothers (Toby and Casey), Silvesta Ng....etc.

Yes I have play with and or against them at the VRC....must be early 90's

If you're still around - looking for players who know what they're doing to drop-in at SunGod in N. Delta on Thurs: 8:00-10:45 and Sunday am 8:00-10:45

They have a website, but to save you the trouble:

From Scott Rd. (120th St) go west on 80th Ave, make a left onto 112th St (south) and take the 2nd right into SunGod.

It's free to join SunGod, drop-ins are $4.50, bring your own birds (although someone will have them). Everyone uses plastics but after being a die-hard feather player for years, they're not too bad.

you can drop in to the YMCA on mondays 9-11..

That would be 9-11 PM, Mondays right?

The Tong Louie YMCA in Surrey also charges a $10 drop-in fee if I'm not mistaken.

The best thing to do is take the initial plunge and get out playing somewhere, doesn't matter where. From the contacts you'll make, you'll quickly find where to play at a level that you are comfortable with.

Do you know they rent racket as well? Thanks alot! I don't live in Vancouver and I don't want to bring my racket from home. I am not looking for beginner players :)

Isn't there badminton at Collingwood Neighbourhood House near your area? There's also badminton at Bonsor Community Complex.
