[BADMINTON] The HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy and US$50,000 are up for grabs in the Siam Cement World Grand Prix Thailand Open Badminton Championships scheduled for January 19 and 25.

More than 200 players from 21 countries including China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, USA, France, Germany, England, Taiwan and Wales have already confirmed their participation in the two-star meet, which will take place at the Nimibutr Gymnasium.

Prof Charoen Wattanasin, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand, said the Siam Cement Group has thrown its support behind the staging of the tournament. Players will not only improve their world rankings but also their prospects of participating in the Athens Olympic Games scheduled for September. Only 172 international players will be allowed to participate in the Olympics event.

"The prize money has been increased from $30,000 to $50,000, making it one of the biggest badminton tournaments ever held in Thailand," said Charoen.

He added that apart from top Thai players led by the talented Boonsak Polsana, second-string players also stand a good chance in the star-studded competition.

The online electronic draw will take place tomorrow at 2.30pm in Anoma Hotel. The qualifying round will kick off at 9am this Monday. Admission is free throughout the tournament.
