if Chen was 150 cm, that'd be pretty short for an elite male badminton player, I can't think of anyone out there that is that short in height that plays elite right now .... the shortest male elite player I can think of is Trikus Aryanto (I think he's 168 cm), well whether or not Trikus is still elite is widely open to debate, lol

unless you are actually planning to play Chen Hong and win. I don't see how Chen's height will affect you.

LOL, well of course for people like us, he's an Olympic silver medallist if I recall ..... I am only talking about an elite international/professional standard

I am pretty sure even if he is 150cm tall, he will still beat me in 10 minutes
Hmmm.....so I wonder who is the shortest pro. player nowadays?:)

150cms... do you have any idea how short that is? That isn't even 5'0. I did a quick search in google and got his height in a minute. That source said he was 181cms, which is 5'11".

Another quick search got me a source which says that Mia Audina is 161cms, which is a touch over 5'3".

Well, being tall takes advantage in serve and net blocking. However, vertical jump (and leg strength) is not a super hard task to be train. Therefore, just get into enough practice, and you will see ppl will run for lives when smash in the front. :D

I got the impression he wans't even as tall as the net...

and the point is to be competeative I'll have to strangthen my legs I guess

There were many short elite players.
Look at : Mia Audina, Susy Susanti, Gong Zhi Chao, Hendrawan, Trikus, Yap Kim Hook, ect.....

tall people usually have it easier in badminton and the shorter people tend to work harder IMO

But tall players, like me, are a little slower because our center of gravity is higher and thus, we have to work on our agility more and also, our underhand shots (drive, net shot, underhand lift) need a lot more work, that is what I have found at 6'4".

I also agree with LazyBuddy, vertical is not super hard to train, just consult someone in plyometrics or a personal fitness trainer if you want a sick vertical (ie Lee Dong Soo's vertical, LOL)

that is true but you can just bend down low to get those shots, shorter people have to exert for energy to get to the bird and even more energy to get the vertical by jumping which can wear you down after a few good rallies. btw 6 4 is way too tall for me, i was talking about around 6 feet or chen hongs height haha;)

But when we bend down low, we are not as fast to come up and also it shows on the international circuit. Jens Eriksen and Martin Lundgaard Hansen, two very tall players have to attack and smash in order to win, they cannot play "fast and furious drive" with the shorter players, that is what Jill Clark said on TV.

Short or tall( jus not too tall or short) i guess it really doesnt matter as ur strengths will make up for the weaknesses.

i noticed dat most of the ppl in this forum dat mention their height r atleast 5'9" or taller, damn im only 5'7", i dun even think dats average

i think the ideal height for badminton is between 5'5 to 6'1. :)

I've stood next to Han Jian, and he's pretty short. On the other end of the scale, Morten Frost was pretty tall, Misbun Sidek was tall-ish ...

Height is one thing, how you utilize what you've got, is more important.

well, I am acutally thinking the height is not the key in badminton unless you are much shorter than the net.

The reason I said this is because:
1. The racket has length, a good 66+ cm length will sure help you a lot.
2. People do jumps, and this gives you some extra inches.

I remember seeing a video of han jian vs. Liem Swie King. The tv commentator remarked that the "diminutive chinaman" refering to han jian. Liem lead 14 to 9 but han caught up and won.
