I'll be there tonight and tomorrow. Be on the look out for a guy wearing dark colored or blue shorts with a white shirt. Might have wording on the shirt...say hi if you happen to be there.

white shirt dark shorts? that's like 1/2 the gym... ;)

heehee... or how about - I'm the chinese fella wearing the glasses. heehee... maybe that will describe the other half of the gym?

Now all you gotta do is say hi to each and every one of them till you find me. :p

well that could be a good or bad thing

good: you get to meet some people

bad: you make a complete fool of yourself.

take your pick. see everyone there tonight.

the crowd was crazy and the system was all messed up, hv to literally fight with everyone to play a game. they need to figure a system so that everyone can follow.

shiriblue
01-24-2004, 03:31 AM
at least they had people there to help set up and moniter the games. be happy for that. if they wern't there, all hell would have broken loose :p but tonight was great, played a few games, won all i think. its nearly impossible to go back to the old system. perhaps if they put some money into a computerized system, it would work. lots of $$$ tho, but it could work. (just a suggestion)

i think the system wasn't so bad, it was just ppls lack of communication and laziness to go up to the boards to look at whos up. People would just somewhat jump on the courts and start hitting and what not. Then they would erase othesr names w/o reason. I don't know... it wans't too bad.. i think the bad system was just a result of too many people.

I played like how many games tonight? I think about 7.. though most of them came at the end. The new gym is much nicer than i thought it would be though.

I'm not sure, but I think I saw you there, kwun. Were you the one that played with the girl and were you wearing glasses?

Didn't really play that much today, even though my group left around 12:30AM. Tomorrow morning I'm off to Moreau for badminton. Watching that Champions Court really makes me want to get that much better. :D

kwun
01-24-2004, 04:48 AM
yeah. it was really crowded. 11 courts, and at one point, each court has a wait of 2-3 games. that's a lot of ppl!

but it was kind of expected though, grand opening first day, $1 drop-in, friday night before a tournament.

the system can be improved, but i doubt it will be so crowded in the future so it may still work. i do like the Pleasanton "clip" system better though.

honestly, i don't believe how many badminton players there are in the Bay area.

but big kudos to Phu and gang. it is a great gym. the ceiling is still low, but higher than i expected. the wall and floor colors are good. sitting area is nice, everything is well planned and executed.

flymordecai. i do wear glasses, tall, thin, nerdy looking Chinese guy who needs a haircut badly. Janet is tall and thin as well.

i played horribly tonight, Janet played pretty bad too. i think i will need sometime to get use to the new Bintang's atmosphere.

we played till around 12.30am. it was rather fun. got there at 7.30pm and i think we played around 8 games. oh well. it was fun.

i took some pictures. will post them up soon.

kwun

this shows the gym. there are 5 courts on the left hand side, and then 6 courts on the right hand side.

the ceiling height is decent. some structural struts are on the way but overall it is pretty ok.

kwun
01-24-2004, 05:03 AM
this is what you see from the entrance. notice the sitting area at the end. there are also sitting area at the right hand side.

this is the owner of the gym, Phu. he is a happy guy! he lost his voice coz he was shouting out all the announcements today.

the floor does look very ghetto and uneven, (think its made of plywood and infills) but once u start playing on it, its not too bad at all (except when it gets wet, almost fell down on my own sweat). ceiling is too low to serve high tho...it was pretty cold the whole nite even tho it was so crowded...i wonder if its gonna heat up pretty bad during the summer time since the ventilation is not too great.

i think they should just put up a sign up clip board on each court, the kids working for bintang were having a hard time keepin track of the players....two groups before me were verbally fighting and cursing on each other. at one point i thot they're gonna smack each other.

but overall it wasnt too bad....not too sure if i'll go back and play there again....for $5 a nite, thats pretty expensive.

TrunkZ69
01-24-2004, 02:26 PM
thats $5 for thw whole day ;)

Looks similar to ClearOne setup although Darryl uses tournament mats on concrete (with an additional layer of carpet/foam).

The lights are pretty exposed whereas at ClearOne, they put some shade to block the glare.

How much is the membership?

The site says $5/session and the times are listed as Weekdays: 11 to 3 (one session); 5pm to 10 pm (another session) and weekends: 2pm to 10 pm (one session) so that's not too bad. Can you come and go during the session? For example, playing on the weekend; can I leave for a couple of hours for dinner and come back to play until 10 pm?

Joseph
01-24-2004, 04:04 PM
In their other gym, there would have been no problem doing that since it was pretty small and they know who you are. This gym is pretty big compared to their other one, so I'm not sure if that's possible. Maybe they give you something to give back to them when you return.

kwun
01-24-2004, 08:27 PM
we will be there again tonight, probably late around 8pm.

i think TrunkZ and Joseph are already there, they plan to play from 2pm all the way till 10pm! those young kids, they can last forever...!

Joseph
01-25-2004, 01:51 PM
I was sweating a lot, more than usual for some reason. I should have brought another tshirt.

I lost most of my energy after our 10 min or so of clearing. I tried to keep it up, but I couldn't. Oh yeah, thanks for teaching me the backhand. I'll keep practicing and eventually show you a full court backhand clear and maybe a backhand smash :D

In the second to last picture, TrunkZ and I are in there along with 2 other BF members that haven't come here in a really long time.

kwun
01-25-2004, 04:29 PM
it was great! i had a lot of fun yesterday even though we were there for only 2 hours. the wait was very reasonable, i only waited for may be 15mins total.

the clearing was good. we did one single rally for at least 10mins. i think my record is around 23min. it was set when i was around your age.. ;) we can try break that one sometimes.

Joseph
01-25-2004, 05:39 PM
Let me build up my stamina a bit more and we'll break that record of yours. We'll do one rally of clears for 1 hour.

Sorry, but $5 dollar expensive? I asume this includes shuttles. It still amazes me how people are prepared to pay for expensive racquets such as MP100 and aren't happy with a few dollars for court time.

No wonder our sport is consider by some as a a cheap beach game!

P.S Good photo's Kwun, resonable looking hall.

Joseph

It doesn't include shuttles, but $5 isn't really expensive. Especially if your going on a saturday and staying the whole entire time from 2pm - 10pm.

Poor us pay $21 for drop-in... :(

an hour? cool. let's start a new category in the Guiness record..!

i am up for it. just need to find a empty gym and a really durable shuttle. with some help, may be we are allowed to switch to a new shuttle at the middle of the rally? :)

kwun
01-26-2004, 04:24 PM
$35/month

$1000/5yrs (i am not sure if they are still allowing this deal or not)

considering the opening times, it is quite reasonable. but you do need to go there on average 2 or more times a week to justify the membership fee.

janet and i were there again tonight.

11 courts, and on average, there are around 5-6 courts unused. the gym was hardly occupied. most courts were playing singles.

we ended up just doing drills. did some full-court drills which was rather cool as we hardly get the chance to. but golly, it was tiring.

we got there at 8pm and got 2 full hours of court time. i think if we arrive at 7pm, and play for 3 hours of solid badminton, that's well worth the $5...

Look like less than 15 players. $75 per night may not be enough to maintain the place. Hope such a nice place for badminton can survive.

Wow... huge difference than the opening night. Guess it's a week day, but still...

Can't wait to visit CA now, as I can provide a little bit more profit to them. Actually, maybe they can seriously considering rent the gym to me, as a hotel room, after closure each night. Win-win situation for both. :D

I think another reason is: Opening night was $1/person. Regular is $5/person.

I really hope this is not the major reason, as many BFers metioned, a lot of the players showed up on Fri night are pretty serious players. With my limited knowledge of CA area, I think $5 is about right for a full day access (compare to NY, that's like heaven).

If the price is the main reason, I don't see how Bintang going to survive (either out of business with lack of participation; or force to further cut down the price, which means die slowly).

alexchh

i think for an establishment like that, they would need at least 150 ppl (average a day) to break even.

thats like 150ppl x $5 x 30 days = $22500 a month.

rent is probably 15k range per month

Bintang has badminton lessons and these students go on a trip together to compete in tournaments.

Not really.

As Joseph metioned, BinTang can generate profit with other stuff, such as private/group lessons, hosting tournies/events, being equipment dealer, string racket, etc. On the "surface", the gym is the main charater, but actually all the "side job" should be the major "money cows". The gym/club itself is a cheaper "office" to run all the shows.

This remind me about my local club owner. The couple rent gyms for club bases. Of course, the memship price is much higher in NY. Even like that, with the high cost (rent, utlities, etc), I thought they would lose $$$. After visiting the club, I think I know how they survived. Exactly the "little things", as lessons, tournies, events, string, equipment selling, etc.

bintang is now doing pretty well. i think they get at least 100 ppl per evening if not more. with 11 courts. sometimes we have to wait for a game or more rarely, two.

i've only been there in the evening and adding onto that the noon crowd, i am guessing they should be doing fairly well.

of course my friend. people are really good with the boards when they are in use. the only problem is when its emtpy and you sort of get use to just jumping on the court and play a match. then all the sudden you get a bunch of ppl mad at you because they have been waiting in line. SOmetimes the gym fills up out of no where, a good thing i believe. Every cent they can make is a good thing, they are having a hard time keeping things up, and i really wanna make sure it stays, i've been there about 4-5 times a week since openning. I have a membership though, of course ^^.

How do you know they are having financial problems? Do they own or rent the building?

I go many times a week also, and if they were charging me $5 each time, they would be making much more money.

They just opened in January, so I'm not surprised they are not well known yet. They need to advertise. If you look on the web for places to play, you never see them listed.

1. If you go very often, maybe u should consider to be a member, which might save u a bit in a long run.

2. The new facility was opend not too long ago, but Bintang is there for quite a while. I still remember BFers said the grand opening night there were hundreds of ppl there. Therefore, I think they are far from "not well known". ;)

While I was taking a rest today, I watched the owner of BinTang playing double. Wow, he gotta be one of the best players (except pros) I have ever seen. He is so fast, and his stokes, his footwork,... are so good. He should be a good coach. I definitely will send my kids to learn from him when they are ready. :)

Aotis
03-04-2004, 10:24 PM
I have seen the owner plays as well. He seemed somewhat "normal".
yes, he's got good techniques but these days, he does more training
than playing. I can name a handful of people who can beat him in the
bay area. And that's just off the top of my head.

kwun

03-05-2004, 09:43 AM
Hi Kwan, I only go there at lunch hour. But I have a couple of friends going there in the evening and they said they saw you and played with you before.

Yes I know Phu definitely is not the best in the bay area as I know that there are some ex-US national team players and ex-Chinese national team players living here. But I have chance to warm up with Phu when it's slow there, and amazingly his stokes are so powerful even he is a skinny guy, and he is so quick covering the court. He is one of the best amateurs I have ever met.

Cheung
03-05-2004, 10:20 AM
Aotis, you must be very good to refer to Phu as a 'normal player';)

If he trained more than he plays, his level will easily go up a couple of steps. When I played with him, he would do some unforced errors. For his level of technique, I would say that would be unusual. The reason would be his relative lack of time playing games.

Aotis
03-05-2004, 12:21 PM
sorry for the misunderstanding, I didn't mean "normal" as in an
average player. I meant normal as in he doesn't seem to prosess
anything special. And like I mentioned, and most people would agree,
he does have very good technique. and Like Cheung said, he lacks
training so he isn't very good at the moment. He tends to make too
many unforced errors.

So what I wanted to say was, he's good, just lacks training :)

kwun
03-05-2004, 12:44 PM
Phu seems to enjoy playing for fun than for competition. with his basic and if he trains hard, he can be very good. but most of the time, he enjoys just running around making fun and doing tricky shots.

perhaps he has come to a realization that badminton is for fun and not for competiton?

Aotis, do you play in Bintang? perhaps i know you?

went there tonight, it was pretty good. by 10pm there are too many empty courts but also too many lazy ppl, had to beg to get them to play a game.

had a chat with Phu the other day, he mentioned that they will be fixing the bulging floor, and today saw that many of the courts are freshly nailed down. much better than before. i think they still have a couple of courts to go but the floor problem seemed to be solved.

the other improvement is that they started a new queueing system. instead of a white board, everybody gets a clip and one queues up for a court by clipping on a rod that is fixed to the wall. quite a good system and very similar to the one used in Pleasanton.

also saw a workout machine at the beginning of the evening and later on in the night they took it away.

monto

there 2 new things in Bintang recently.

1. they fixed the floor, they fixed the bulging and then repainted the whole thing. much nicer now than before!

2. Phu told me that they have wireless internet connection. so the wait time between games won't be as painful anymore. cannot find more perfect a time to come to BF and yak about badminton. i brought my notebook there last night and it works like a charm.

Haha, I've always heard about Phu opening up a gym in the bay area...now i finally see the pictures.

I gotta give him props to continue the badminton traditions though...cuz he was our high school coach in the mid 90s..and he basically brought the program back to life and we eventually beat Newark Memorial...which at that time had a streak of like 120 school matches unbeaten or something. I think we (mission san jose) finally beat them the year after i graduated...but yea..those were fun times.

he's an old timer now...he's still quick but there's definitely a lot of people that can beat him in the A/B level in the bay area i'm sure =) i admire him for opening up a big ass gym though. total props...

hopefully i'll get to play up there one of these days when i venture back to the bay area.

The only drawback I can think of having 3 badminton gyms in close proximity is dilution of solid players. Currently I can go to Bintang any week night and have solid MS games with many good players and this may not be true anymore after the opening of United and Smash City.

That is a very true statement Han. I expressed the same concern to Phu, and I think he should come up with something so he can keep the "good" :) players still coming to his gym.

One hopes more players will show up and the herrendous overcrowding in Bintang will be a thing of the past. There may be some weeding out price and quality, but that's the free market.

It's a good news to have more gyms open to us (other than the advanced players like Han and krantikt). But what I heard is that Bintang is just breaking even in revenue. After Bintang opened the gym in Sunnyvale, very few people go to Sunnyvale community Center. The gyms in Menlo Park and Milipitas are just 15 mintues from Bintang. and the new gym in Fremont is also 15 minutes from the one in Miliptas. Will all these 4 gyms find enough players to survive?

TrunkZ69
03-20-2005, 05:56 PM
I think the Milpitas gym may be run over by high schoolers. Lots of highschools around that area. That'll be good for the overall level of badminton.

The only drawback I can think of having 3 badminton gyms in close proximity is dilution of solid players. Currently I can go to Bintang any week night and have solid MS games with many good players and this may not be true anymore after the opening of United and Smash City.

hi, Han...funny guy, yeah, if you haven't noticed, most of the good players you have been playing in MS are Phu's students, and they will still play at their home gym!!!

Plus, players are always improving, so the main point should be to create more good players so the sport can grow!!!

As an old-timer of badminton, I am truly ecstatic to see how much badminton is growing in the Bay Area right now. Back in the days when I played almost everyday, I had to travel far and wide. With the coming boom of badminton facilities, that will be a story of the past. Amidst this hustle and bustle, I really cannot express how much we owe Phu and Bintang Badminton for pushing badminton to the level that it is at and will be. There has always been talk of people starting badminton gyms since the 80's, but Phu was the one who truly cared and loved the sport enough to start it. And now, everyone is following in his footsteps, trying to be a "promoter of the sport" as they proclaim on their websites, but their intentions will never come close to matching the sincerity and purity of Phu's. (The very fact that one group is opening on the same day as the Cal Badminton Open signifies that they really do not know what is going on in the badminton world. If the founders were truly into badminton, they would probably be playing at the tournament themselves.)

When Phu was younger, I saw him pretty much at all the open gyms I was at, even though he lived much further from them than I did. And not only is he himself crazy about the sport, but he has brought many many students into the sport as well. How many strong players out there go to tournaments with a hoard of students?! I don't know if Phu still does, but he used to 3-4 years back. He has brought the sport of badminton to life in the Bay Area and I truly thank him for it. And I think all badminton players out there should as well. Amidst the talk of all the new gyms opening and where everyone is going, I hate to think how none of the new gyms would ever come into existence had it not all started with Phu and his love for the sport. His passion and spirit are unmatched by any other these days. I wish him the best...I know he will keep fighting for the sport.

Wooden racket, I think those are some worthy, and well deserved praises for Phu. Hopefully the new Gym's are there for promoting the growth of the sport and not necessarily to bring down their competition.

Do you LOVE badminton?
Are you TIRED of playing C's and D's at tournaments?
Do you want to become a HIGHER level, HIGHER skilled player?
Are you ready to devote your life (well, almost...) to training?!

Well, look no further...

The Bintang Team is searching for highly-motivated, enthusiastic, hard-working badminton players for a new intense training program. This will be an experience of your lifetime. It will be non-stop training, drilling, and playing for a year. Qualifications as listed:

* LOVES badminton
* Very hard-working (the not-stop-even-when-you-drop kind of person)
* Has LOTS of free time (3+ hrs on weekdays, 6+ hrs on weekends)
* Under 22 years of age

Training will be free; sponsorship of badminton equipment. The head coach will be screening/interviewing throughout April. (Do not be discouraged if you are not currently a high-level player. The goal of the program is to develop new talent.) Email info@bintangbadminton.com if you are interested!

just want to let people know, Phu has trained a team of really really good players. i have seen many of the kids he trained from when they are only so-so players, and then over weeks and months, their badminton skills dramatically improved.

it gotta be a combination of a good coach as well as hardwork in the part of their students. so if you think you are qualified and willing to pay in sweat for results, you should consider this opportunity.

I don't think there is any age limitation. I have a few friends in the mid-30's taking 1-to-2 classes from Phu. I can tell they have improved a lot in just a few months. Actually it's a good workout too when he trained them on footwork.

Well, Bintang needs a coach to have a training session. I have not seen Phu for a long time at noon. Actually I saw Phu teaching students when the Geneva gym just opened. Probably to Phu, the priority of bar exam is way higher than coaching badminton right now.

Interesting I seldomly see any players at your age (19) at noon in Bintang. Most of the people I saw are people working but taking a lunch break. I'm just an ordinary person out of the 40 - 50 people playing there at lunch hour. However, I never met the 2 most famous people in the bay area in Bintang, Kwun and Han. I bought over 60 DVD's from Han, and I'm very interested to find out how he looks like. I saw Kwun's picture here, and all I know Han is left-handed. I rarely saw any left handed players in Bintang.

I definitely like the idea. plus the price too.:) However, the problem is the number of players. I am not sure how easy to find 6-10 players to form a team. I just have a suggestion here. Is it possible for individual to register the event first? But he needs to provide his skill level (A,B,C,D). If there are enough individual, then one team is form. If there are a lot of individual interested in it, Then Phu can shuffle those individual to create several teams so that they are average. Would it be more fun?

Since this is the first time we are doing an "open" league, there is a lot to experiment and play around with. People who are interested but do not have a group of friends to register with are definitely still encouraged to sign up. Phu will definitely help form teams from individuals who sign up and will make the teams as "fair" as possible. How the teams are formed will depend largely on how many people sign up and what their skill levels are.

So if you have the even the slightest inkling to join, then do not hesitate. SIGN UP. BBA will make it work and it will be very fun! :D

A name like "Team 1" or "Team A" will be frowned upon!!!

By the way, the winning team will win a team uniform with

Hi MidBadder. You must have come on Tuesday at lunchtime, because we noticed that it was quite crowded too, but it's not always that bad at lunchtime. Phu has talked to many of the high school students who come to the lunch open gym and tried to get them to come in the evenings instead.

We were contemplating extending the open gym (a few courts) past two, since we only have summer camp after open gym and that only takes up about 8-9 courts. However, Phu also (sporadically) started a summer training program for high school students and that is taking up the rest of the courts. The low-cost/free training program is for high school students who really want to get better but cannot afford it. Phu is trying to help these kids as much as possible, because he cannot bear to say no to motivated kids who want to train but just don't have the financial resources. We hope you understand.

In the meantime, we will continue to persuade the high school crowd to come at a later time. And if they are willing to come earlier than 11, then we may open earlier.

Thanks,
Bintang Badminton

I have been a gym hopper for the past year. And I must say that Bintang's new floors are the best of all the clubs in the Bay Area. The cool badminton mats sitting on top of the wooden suspension flooring gives you the ultimate badminton experience. The floor is stable enough that you can push off from it immediately, and yet it is soft enough that your knees/ankles/back feel no pain, even after hours of play!

SC's Taraflex is definitely too hard - only a thin layer sitting directly on the cement. We can feel it in our knees and ankles after a few games.

UBC has badminton mats too, but they sit on a foam underlayment. It is way too squishy; you can't push off from it easily.

GGBC has decent floors, but they are still hard compared to Bintang's new ones.

Kudos to Phu and gang for the great improvement in the floors! My friends and I love it!!! This is a long awaited moment. We are finally ready to settle with one gym.

And they invested a lot of money also. Everyone playing in Bintang should help them out by buying a Tee-shirt. Way to go - Bintang - the best badminton gym in the bay area.

We didn't know there was a thread about our new floors! We have been so busy preparing for the floor renovation and now working on the final touches that we haven't had time to do anything else!

Thank you everyone for all the compliments. We are very happy with the turnout of the floors. All the hard work and $$$ are worth it. Playing the first game on the new floors was completely satisfying!

Thank you to all the people who showed their support by getting a shirt. And also much thanks to those who came down to lend a helping hand. Without everyone's support, we would not have been able to do it so quickly and so seamlessly. We hope you enjoy! Happy badminton-ing!!! :)

The new floors sound very exciting, I definitely want to try them out!

What about the color schemes and lighting? Have those been renovated as well or are they still on the dark side? And is the gym still pretty crowded?

We tried to keep the same color scheme as much as possible. Our badminton mats are green with yellow lines. The aisles between the mats will be made green as well (sometime within the next two weeks). The lighting has not changed, as we've had mixed comments on them. Some say they are a bit dim. However, many like how they are not blindingly bright in certain spots - you don't lose the shuttle during the rallies. Here is one picture of the gym. (I am not able to shrink it. :crying: ) A photo album will be put up on our website that documents the entire floor renovation project. If you really want a good feel of it, can come down to visit and try some jump smashes! :D

Sorry we did not respond sooner. We've been quite busy working on the final touches for the new floor of our gym in Sunnyvale.

What you've heard is surprising to us as well! BBA opening up next week...in Fremont?! That would be pretty awesome I guess, but there is already a club in Fremont. If and when anything new comes up, we will definitely let everyone know! :D 'Til then, you can always visit us here in Sunnyvale.

Why not A flight ?

bintangclub
03-15-2006, 02:49 PM
Hi Kranti,
We are trying to promote the sport and get new players to participate in tournaments. We would like to see new faces - people who normally only play open gyms or just play recreationally - join the competion world. The recreational flight is for these players, since even D flight is a bit intimidating for first-time tournament players.

There are already many tournaments out there for A-level players. A-level players are already much into the sport and the competition. Since we would like to start and end our tournament at reasonable times, we would like to have only 4 flights this time.

Thanks again for your interest. We will be hosting another Nor-Cal tournament in September with A-flight and cash prizes. We look forward to seeing you then!

I was reading the last page of this thread and took me a while to find out where about this tournament will be held.
The word "Bintang" straight away think of Malyasia or Indonesia, then Sunnyvale, where ? and realised that most of the posting are from US. When I went to the website, it has CA but no country ever mentioned. I know that CA is in USA but may be alot more people don't know. Perhaps it should has USA in your address in the website.
