View Full Version : Stringer Quality
Brave_Turtle 01-26-2004, 07:03 PM Hi guys!
I live in Montreal (canada). I dont know many stringer here. The only one I know is Sport expert.
Everytime I go to string my racquet, I keep telling them to string my racquet at 24 lbs and they always string it at around 19 lbs. Even if I tell them to string higher than 24 lbs they always put around 19 lbs.
Also, they don't want me to watch while they string my racquet. I went there several time and everytime I go, I pay my 22$ for string+stringing service and I always give 5$ tip to the stringer. I'm very disapointed with the service.
Do you guys know how to reconize good stringers? Does he need a certificate? Will a stringer ask me several questions, like how often I play, what type of player I am, before stringing my racquet?
Please help guys
PS: I would also really appreciate if u can give me some stringer address in Montreal.
Thank you!
bluejeff 01-26-2004, 07:19 PM If he/she has a sunglasses like I do:cool: , he is probably a good stringer :p
Obviously, they just string the racket according to the racket's recommendations without telling you. You shouldn't go back to that shop anymore. (you can come to me :p, the cost is a case of cherry coke (24 cans) :p:p)
I think some stringers have certificates, but not all stringers do because different countries have different things. Asia stores never have any licenses or certificates for stringings (In my knowledge so far )
One way to tell if he/she is a good stringer is to see the stringing process yourself. Also, ask for his/her past experience could help, too
I am a stringer, but occasionaly I would give my racket to a female stringer in Taipei when I come back (for vacation). From the experience, equipment, and the attitude (important!), I can tell she is a nice stringer :)
Wai Shing 01-26-2004, 07:21 PM My friend told me the coach at Cegep Ahuntsic strings for like 10$ or something...plus quality is good they say, but never had it done there myself.
If not, I string mine at Lucien Laverture. It's also at Crémazie metro. It cost me around 25$(tax included). And it's a specialized racquet store so shouldn't worry about quality...
cooler 01-26-2004, 07:24 PM Brave_turtle, you can
1. ask around in clubs that u play in
2.go to proshops inside those private recreational or racquet clubs. They allow non member to browse and shop in their proshops.
3. go check around other racquet shops
4. ask around here (which you are doing)
LazyBuddy 01-26-2004, 07:38 PM Yeah, the best way to get a stringer is to ask around in your club(S). Generally, if several ones are satisfied with one stringer's performance, then, u should consider to at least take a shot.
As for the certificate, it might apply for tennis, not badminton. Even though, both are racket sport, but the process are quite different. Therefore, the ones having certificate(s) might not do a good job, either. On the other side, many stringers (especially ppl doing like a side-job) might not have a certificate, but they can be good. Generally, it's a trust between the stringer and u, if u like his/her job, then stick with the particular one.
One thing for sure, no more tip for the current stringer, and no more business with them as well. But just wonder, how u tell if a racket is 19lb or 24 without any references?
Brave_Turtle 01-26-2004, 08:09 PM Hey thank guys!!
WoWW answer so fast hehe I knew I could have some help from you. Guess I'm gonna stop giving tip to the guy and stop going to the place.
Hey Lazybuddy, It's true, I'm not 100% sure its 19 lbs but I'm 100% sure it's not higher than 22 lbs. The reason is that I compare it to my 19lbs tension old racquet and it is almost the same. I also compare it to my friend who has racquet strung at 22 lbs and it wasn't tighter.
Like I said, I kept asking higher and higher but he always give same low tension. Or maybe should I ask 50 lbs next time? EHHEHE
Hey Bluejeff, I would really pay 24 pack of cherry coke to get my racquet strung by you but heheh I think u live in USA don't u?
What about you Cooler? Do you string racquet?
Thank again everyone!

There u go, ask him about the his stringer. ;)
badrad 01-26-2004, 08:23 PM chances are that if you went to a sports store like sport chek or sports mart (or similar) you will only get max what is specified by the manufacturer. the stringer is likely to be some school kid who has been given the 5 minute tour around the machine by his boss (i oversimplify this) and has been told to stay within the specs. the reason for this is simple - liability. the stringer strings it higher than the manufacturer specs, racquet or string breaks, the company has to pay, maybe the stringer gets fired.
cooler 01-26-2004, 08:33 PM exactly badrad, sport experts and sportchek are like that. I have seen enough distorted racquets done by them, at 19-20 lb.
brave_turtle, i occasionally string racquets.
bluejeff 01-26-2004, 08:36 PM OR, you can get a string machine yourself :)!
(That's the best solution for me)
Traum 01-26-2004, 09:08 PM Doesn't Tenniszon in Montreal offer stringing services? Being a racquet sports specialty store, I would assume that they ought to be better than Sports Chek...

Well, expert in tennis or squash does not guarantee a good job in badminton. Try to gather some info, before handing up the pricy rackets. However, if they do a good job, with good reputation, why not?

Wai Shing, do those prices include the string? Thanks.
Wai Shing 01-27-2004, 10:01 PM Lucien Laverture's price include string, I'm not 100% sure about the coach at Cegep Ahuntsic but I think he does...
Brave_Turtle 01-27-2004, 10:07 PM I wouldnt recommend the coach at Ahunsic, I know him personally. All he thinks about is money... And as a player hes a sore loser. Last time I went to play there, he broke his racquet over the floor because he lost to some guys.
Wai Shing 01-27-2004, 10:15 PM I've heard from my friend that he has quite a temper when he loses...he also told me the same story...I've never actually played there though, I'm afraid to go there because I heard the players who frequent there are awesome hehe, waay outta my league

I've heard that too but many of my friends who frequent Ahuntsic say that there are also a lot of intermediate players, it depends on when you go there. I went there once on a Saturday morning and the players were beginners to intermediate level, no pros :).
Wai Shing, $25 at Lucien Laverture with strings? What type of strings?
