MALAYSIA have been seeded third for the Thomas Cup Asian zone qualifying round on Feb 16-22 but face the danger of ending up in the same group with Thailand in the preliminary round.

Thailand, with top class shuttler Boonsak Polsana and experienced pair Pramote Teerawiwatana-Tesana Panvisvas in their lineup, are capable of making it difficult for Malaysia to qualify for the final round.

The tournament format will see 14 teams divided into four groups and the winners of each group will earn their berths in the final round.

The second placed teams in each group will be involved in a playoff to claim the fifth position.

China are the top seeds in the qualifying round while South Korea and Japan are seeded second and fourth respectively.

Malaysia are targeting a top-four finish and despite the anticipated threat from Thailand, the hosts are expected to gain a place in the final round which will be held in Jakarta in May.

In the Uber Cup, Malaysia’s aim of qualifying for the final round for the first time looks tough as they are only ranked seventh out of nine teams.

The top four teams will make the trip to Jakarta and Malaysia’s chances will depend much on the draw which will be conducted on Saturday.

South Korea are seeded tops in Kuala Lumpur while Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the other seeded teams.

The nine teams will be divided into two groups where the top two from each group will proceed to the final round.

South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong will be too strong for Malaysia but they have an even chance of toppling fourth seeds Taiwan and Thailand to clinch the last qualifying berth

SEEDINGS — THOMAS CUP: 1 China; 2 South Korea; 3 Malaysia; 4 Japan.

Uber Cup: 1 South Korea; 2 Japan; 3 Hong Kong; 4 Taiwan.
