I noticed Badminton players tend to register last-minute. So as of right now, I have a few players going, but I expect a major flood as the dates get closer.
Cheers!

I think I might be able to come out again for this, but the players will have to try the Domino racquets out if it is a demo night instead of just looking. I can come up with a few freebies again if people actually try the racquets.
Have to make my trip worthwhile coming from the Island!!! :D
Please e-mail me as I don't check the forum too often.

Break-My-Strings,
How many people are you taking in that day max? Just curious to what the wait times will be between games during the open play.
Thanks

There are some people who mentioned they may play only the first part, and will skip the tourny because they have other commitments.
I'm guestimating the wait time should be around 15minutes, any faster of a rotation, people will have no more energy left for the tourny.

The odds are, after the Open House, we will be going out for food!
If you have any suggestions, please post it here!
example:
Japanese : All-You-Can-Eat
East Indian : All-You-Can-Eat
Chinese : preset menu
Cheers! :D

Hey BMS, so basically $11 for the 6 hours of badminton plus the clone BF T-shirts? Are there any prizes for the winners of the tourney?

Hi SmashingBird,
It is $11 if you register by March 21, otherwise it is $13 afterwards. The fee will cover feather shuttles and allows your name to be drawn at random for door prizes (just like my Xmas 2003 session). I am hoping to get a few more Racquet Reps to allow players to demo their warez and supply some additional door prizes.
The fee does not include the clone-Ts, and pending when the artwork is finished, I may or may not have the clone-Ts ready, either as door prizes or for sale at the event.
Yes, there will be prizes for the winners of the tourny.
Cheers! :)

Sounds cool... BMS, where and when do I register? Do I have to make a trip to Collingwood during one of your public drop-in sessions?

All you need to do is PM me with
1) Your real full name
2) Home or Cell number
3) How you are paying, cash or cheques (I will then reply with the details)
(credit cards & body parts are not accepted, BUT brand new badminton raquets will be accepted but do not expect any "change back" in the form of a used racquet)
4) Then goto Collingwood (anytime) to submit your fees to complete the registration.
As a suggestion, if you know a few players who want to join, have one person to submit all your fees.
Remember... register by March 21st, the fee is $11, otherwise $13 afterwards.
Cheers! :)

As a suggestion for Racquet Reps...
For every player who decides to try-out one of your racquets, you should get them to do a quick survey. After it is complete, they could get a small simple gift like one over-grip, or they could get their name in a special prize draw (seperate from the Open House) for a chance to win a bigger prize! (wink wink knudge knudge) Something in a shape of a huge lolli-pop and has lots of little squares running through the circle thingee part.
Sample survey:
1) What is your level of play (intermediate / advance)
2) What is your prefered racq
(1=very poor 5=neutral 9=very good)
3) Specify the racq #1 you tried out
4) Rate the demo racq for "power"
5) Rate the demo racq for "control , etc etc
Maybe this type of info will give you & your manufacturers some feedback.
Cheers!

I will know if I can come after March 9, if my high school team makes it to provincials April 1-3 in Coquitlam, then I can stay the extra day.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but panhandle, can you post (or start a new thread) detailing where I can view the provincials? Dates, times, venues?
Thanks.

Hi, Break-My-String, I like to attend the doubles tournament. But I have not partner at this moment. Can I still involve in that ?

Don't worry about not having a partner. During the Open play, your partner will constantly change. This will be the opportunity to meet and play against other players (especially other Vancouver BFers).
It is only during the Doubles Tournament is when you will be playing with the same partner. Your tournament partner will chosen through a special process, and not by you.
Yes, there are spots still available for the April 4th Open House. You can either drop-in this Sunday or just follow the above instructions.
Cheers! :)

Haahaha! Thank goodness for the WALL!
(gee it looks like I had one beer too many!)
Actually, I was chasing after a shot made to the left side while I was on the right. Talk about short braking distance! I could have ended up "making a new emergency exit" :D Luckily, I wasn't playing in one of the middle courts otherwise it would have been Bowling For Badminton Players! :D :D :D

In the Open Play, partners were randomly drawn** for each round and points were tallied for all the player's games. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Panhandle was ranked the top player, he was the only player who won ALL HIS GAMES. The next ranking player had a distant 6 point spread.
WWCbro & I were partnered for the tourny. The first round was easy but I played miserably on the second round and failed to help get WWCbro into the semi-finals. I should have just served, walked off the court, and wait for WWCbro to finish off the point. I just had too much things going in my head about the prize draw & tourny. Sorry WWCbro!
Everybody brought some food to share, it was a great feast. I was not there when Wood_22_chuck brought in his spring rolls but only saw the discarded shell of a feeding frenzy.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to both Panhandle representing Karakal/Domino and Philip of Flex in demo-ing their racquets and supplying some great door prizes! (I know 2 BFers came out as prize winners!:) )
Also, I like to thank all the BFers who came out to support the event by cheering the players on, it's always nice to put a face to a name, hey Badrad!
Thanks once again! ;)
** My original intention was to use a single draw which created a set of matches where a player will always play with a new set of players. Unfortunately with my limited mathematical & statistical knowledge, my computerized system failed after the 6th or 7th round where partners/opponents were repeated. After 8 hours & no sleep, at 7:30am I surrended to the statistics god and did my random drawn. Maybe I was too tired and could not see the pattern.

Thanks for putting together the Collingwood Open, BMS ... a great afternoon of badminton!

BMS, i just want to say that i admire your dedication, sacrificing your own time, energy (and the gym wall) to organize a badminton event for the badminton enthusiasts out there.
without ppl like you, badminton will be a very unpopular sport.
so hats off to you ! :D

Totally agreed with Kwun and Dave, BMS' dedication to the sport sets quite a high standard for the rest of us to follow:). I wished I could have half of the energy and resourcefulness he has if I ever want to set up my own club or tourney.

I went undefeated with numerous partners, but faltered in the first round of play offs. :(
Now that I've come to the mainland twice to play you BF'ers...how about coming to the island for one? I will start a new thread.
I had fun playing 5 hours of badminton...and will do it again!!
Good job with the event BMS!! By the way, I was your partner when you collided into the wall!!! :D

BMS, my thanks for organizing the tourney. It was fun and if I had a better "grip" of the concept of the Open Play, I would have definitely made it on time. All in all it was good. Nice to meet new baddies and to see some familiar faces. Yeah..too bad we lost, I figured it must kinda of hard, playing & organizing the tounrey, whilst in the midst of a match :D
Tend to concur with BMS that it wasn't my smash (my smash is so wimpy that, it will not bowl over a styrofoam board, let alone a man of BMS stature!) It was one of those net hugging crosscourt drop that led to his "graceful crash into the wall"

Thanks for all your words of gratitude & support! :)
I alone cannot take all the credit. It's the contribution from EVERYONE that makes an event successful.
First, it is knowing there are baddy fanatics who are willing to play anywhere anytime, like to meet new players, share some food & conversation, and just have fun doing it.
Second, you need a communication medium like BF to create links to other groups which otherwise may have never heard of you before. And that's where the efforts like Kwun should take a share of the credit.
Third, manufacturers (& their reps) who increase the "value" of the event by providing knowledge of their products along with great door prizes.
I am just person who takes the three groups and give it a time & a place. The positive synergy that is created is from what everybody brings in.
Cheers! ;)
