What's with the "mad" look on the posting?

I am trying to make the Sunday (7th) if there is enough interest for that night.

Including Dinner?????

That's odd.

(Canadians really know how to enjoy :))

So far, there is only 2 people in that night, Keith and I, I signed up for all 3 nights and took all the lucky numbers.

That's always has been the trend for the Sunday night crowd. They are not social folks (eh, Viver?) and you would think that the fun night actually give them a good opportunity to play 3 to 5 very good, evenly matched games.

I guessed some folks are wanted to win against the weaker players and not willing to put their reputation on the line against evenly matched players. hahah...

Bluejeff, yep, we Canadians are out for the food and drinks. The fun nights at RBC are usually subsidized by the club from the monies collected through membership and drop-in fees. Good deal if you think about it as the CAD$10 includes dinner plus all the feather shuttles that you use in the games.

Those folks that want to pick on weaker folks can go into the weaker catalogry and win there.HA, but this year, I heard the Sunday crowd is very small so it will be hard to put up a tourney unless the folks from the other night joins too.

Where is dinner going to be at? Hmm..I wonder, was last year at Honlalulu and we could order any one dish we want?

There always some 'competitive' players everywhere. WWC you know me, I am there for a some exercise:) and winning wasn't always the highest priority. Lately on Sunday nights you may be able to play 7-10 matches, singles is also a possibility.

Fun night should be interesting but I think I would opt out. I prefer to stay away from these fun nights, specially doubles.

SmashingBird

I think the prize for the winners and runner ups are trophys. You actually have to partner different people every game and they accumlate the scores and top 4 people with highest scores play finals. Not sure how to explain it, I think WWC can do a better job explaining.

OIC...

Are you playing in it Smashingbird?

Winex West Can

From what I hearing. The Sunday fun night is not really that full yet.

The format is basically that you get grouped into groups of four/five (roughly all at the same level) and you compete in a round-robin format where you partner up with each player in your group for each game (i.e. at the end of the round-robin, you would have partnered up with each of the other 3 or 4 players once). Total scores of all games determine the order. Top 2 scorers from each group goes into the final and play (with #1 from Group A partnering up with #2 from Group B against #1 from Group B who is partnered up with #2 from Group A).

Past years, the winners and finalists got prizes (bottles of wine, etc.) but I think the last couple of years, they have been giving out trophies.

After the games, we all head out to a pre-determined restuarant to eat and drink (included in the entry fee).

It's for members only though. Last time I heard, there's a long waiting list for RBC membership, so don't get your hopes too high:(.

When I signed up for the tournament...there is members($5) and non-members($10) listed so I presume that non-members can join as well. As of today(Tues) non of the nights are really fill..tons of spots left..esp Sunday...they might not even cancel the Sunday night because there is only 3 ppl playing so far. If you want to sign up, go drop by the RBC during any of the three nights(Tues/Thurs/Sun) 6:30pm-9:45pm. I cannot sign up for any of you because you have to pay when you sign up. I believe the deadline is this Sunday.

Opps...I meant to say..they might even cancel Sunday and now Tuesday too..the only night that is for sure is Thursday.

Nope. The fun nights are opened to non-members too. It's $10.00 for non-members and $5.00 for members.

There is a waiting list for membership (for regular sessions) because it is one of the cheapest place around ($135.00/year for once a week = 40 weeks = $3.00+ for 3 hours of play time with high quality feather shuttles).

I would suggest that you sign up and try out the (a) facility; (b) social with like-minded baddy players and (c) enjoy a few high quality games.

Yeah, Brian was kind enough to take my payment and called Peter L. to put me in with the intermediates. Wished I did drop-in though... I was aware that RBC is usually packed and their membership/drop-in system kinda put me off -- even though it makes perfect sense-- so I left my gear at home, drove down there to check out the place and sign up for the fun night. Besides, I got call up for dinner in Vancouver D/T with my friend later, so no chance to play even if I had my gear with me:(.

Anyway, I signed up for Thursday night only... this coming Tuesday is not good cuz I play at Renfrew (Vancouver) and I think Sunday is cancelled. That's cool, SmashingBird... chat with you soon on ICQ:).

Alright... for starters, I just wanna say that RBC is a pretty cool club with loads of friendly faces. Had the opportunity to meet up with SmashingBird and Wwcbro for the first and dined with them. It's quite an eye-opener watching them fight it out at the advance level while I almost but not quite cruise through the intermediates:o.

For my games... I played and walkthrough the first game of the series before encountering quality oppositions later on. Game format is one game-15points w/o setting, except for the final game. Played four games in total with different partners... two consecutive games followed by a long interval before the last two games. Me and my partner almost fudged up the final game cuz we didn't set (organiser told us before, but I guess some of us didn't listen:p). Won 15-14 at first, but had to continue playing the set after clearing up the confusion. By that time, we edged out a 17-15 game in what seems to be eternity for the final 2 points before taking the series.

For the life of me, I can't understand how I could have so many mis-hits tonight:(. Those Winex birdies held up surprisingly well given my circumstances... so not quite a birdie-killer:D. Good thing it doesn't happen too often cuz I was very worried about my racquet at one point. Anyway, I won all my games, claimed the intermediates' trophy and cap off the night dining with the RBC folks at a restaurant in Richmond.

SmashingBird: I promise you that, next time, I will sign up with the Advance group:D.

Wwcbro: Heh! Had to apologise for staying quiet most of the night... I am just so out of my elements tonight:D. It's too bad that you won't be able to drop-in with us at Collingwood Sundays, you would have love it there:).

Anyway, very thankful for the organisers and the club for the warm welcome. I had a great time with the folks there and would love to repeat the experience again:).

My partners were Gordon, Rick, Chee, and hmm... I think Francis? Those are the names I remembered. Gordon is pretty good given his return to the game in just 2 months. I was very surprised and had a hard time facing him twice, but thanks to him, the first game was a cakewalk cuz he's my first partner:D.

About the advanced group, I didn't get all their names but Robert L. caught my attention.

I think in cappy's group was :Rick, Chee, Francis, Richard, Joe, Gordan, and Kitty?
in my group, there was : Frank, Ken, Keith, Robert .K, Robert .L, Steven, and Steve.
I got the luck of playing AGAINST Frank TWICE....played against him/Ken in the opening match. I think the draw was rigid against me and wwcbro. At least dinner was good.

edit: Actually, I played against Frank THREE times, in the finals as well.

Robert L (there are actually two Robert L at the club but it being a Thursday, I would assume that it is the older Robert L that you talking about) is good (uses Winex) ;). Surprising he prefers nylon birds over feathers as he thinks the nylons are more consistent from one to the next as compared to feathers.

As for SmashingBird, he has improved quite a lot over the first time that I saw him played. He's definitely gotten a lot faster (i.e. footwork is better) and also concentration is much better than before.

You mean I was struggling hard in the higher beginners court. Heh, smashing gives me too much shoulder pain, usually I smash once or twice a night(Once again, you can ask wwcbro for proof) but since last night, it was a tournament, I just had to try everything. I think we're talking about the same Robert L. Tall middle-aged gentleman who wears glasses, white Polo shirt and shorts. He's very impressive in the games I watched. He really prefers nylon?! Man, after I got used to feathers... I don't think I would want to go back to nylon. Heck! I have just started searching online for quality feathers at a good price. However, it's true though... can't beat plastic birdies for durability and consistency.

First off,
It is nice to meet Cappy75. As for the accent...well, you 'know-lah', hard to lose stuff from where you are born. WWC has less of an accent than me. Too bad we can't get a Sunday night off, would like to partner WWC and see how we do. Been ages since he & I partnered. One of this day......

Am surprised that I was rated "advanced" in level of play. :o I considered myself a so-so player, way, way........below that of SB, Frank, Keith & Ken. I tend to lean with SB regarding the draw, could use with a bit more tinkering. But regardless, it was a fun night and good dinner. I think for this coming Tues Fun night, dinner will be at a different place....believe it will be 2x as good as the Thurs one!!!

Timeless, for the Advanced group..winners was Frank/Ken. Intermediate group...Cappy75/Rick. Beginners (not sure if I am using the right term, because they are not actual beginners)...Lionel/(can't remember who the partner is..sorry!)

:)

Yah, neither me or you should be in the advance group, esp. they seeded us..hahah. I think Tues will be the same for our group with the exception of the unseeded side. So it will be Frank, Keith, you and me on the same side again
Dinner will be at California Cafe, Rick already booked the tables on Friday night. Hey you should order the cold drinks, they say they will charge us extra but Peter didn't at the end, and I order the Jumbo Size too..hahaha
And the beginners winners were Lionel and Andy. I heard from Kitty that Andy's father was cheating giving up points intentionally to Andy when they were playing against each other..hahaha.

Looks like RBC has quite a sizable core of excellent players. Viver and Timeless-- are you both members of the club or just regular drop-ins? Incidentally, I received a call from Peter L. this morning about helping out the juniors. I was flattered that he asked me but had to turn down the opportunity as I don't live near enough. Kinda surprised by the call since I am a non-member and had only one drop-in with the club for the Fun Night. Aren't there enough volunteers to help run the junior program?

I believe Viver is a Sunday night member, Timeless is not, not even a regular dropin, when was the last time I seen TImeless dropin?..hmm...letsee...last year?..hahah:p
Well, the junior program's head Coach is Frank, so let see....hmmm...yeah..wwcbro was a coach, he coached my sister, I was expecting him to teach her how to do a jumping backhand smash within a month but he wasn't able to so my sister quit.:D The irony about the program is how there is a long waiting list for kids to get in and yet sometimes I see very few people show up. Anyways I should stop ranting about my own club..hahah.

edit: I m actually ok with the coaches such as Rick, wwcbro, but there is this one coach(not gonna name) I really question. He was in the beginner's level for the fun night and he didn't even win. He's form is not very good and teaching method is very questionable. Do you agree with me on this wwcbro?

You should of made a deal with Peter, say if you volunteer to coach, you get to be a member of RBC or something.;)

Hi Cappy75,
I play in RBC on Sundays nights only. Timeless is not a RBC member, but VRC's. I had the pleasure to meet him already and he is a very good player. Hope someday have the chance to meet and play with you.

I did that before but have to turn it down later because of the distance. It's really volunteer basis and your reward is the kids smiles. It's worth it, believe me. :)

If you are interested in earning your NCCP certification, this would be a great opportunity to complete your practical component and actually apply your theory and technical aspects too.

What you do get out of the program is the pleasure of knowing that you have introduce the game of badminton to kids and hopefully they will make it their sport. At the end of the sessions, the club do show their appreciation with gift certificates (which is not a large amount but just a token). Who knows, the kid that you will coaching could turn to be the next National champion.

You can contact any member of the club Executive (or myself) if you are interested.

Thanks.

I believe all the coaches are required to pay their own membership to RBC. As far as I know, being a volunteer coach there is strictly just that.

Viver, WWCbro, WWC, SmashingBird,

What are all the days and times this volunteer program is running on? I wouldn't mind putting in some time if it works into my schedule. Is it run at Anderson as well? And do they train with feather or plastic?

The volunteer coaching take place is the McKay Elementary School off No.2 Rd just past Granville Rd. It runs on Monday only from 7pm - 10pm. The juniors (Ages 7-12) goes from 7pm-8:30pm whilst the seniors (Ages 13-16) goes from 8:30-10pm. They played with feathers.
I was coaching for a while there, but eventually unable to do so due to conflicting obligations.:p

Oh, likewise, Viver! I think I might try to drop-in on one of these sundays with Dave and Traum when they're free. For me, RBC is really out of the way even though the club atmosphere is warm and friendly. It's quite enjoyable to have intense yet friendly games, nothing beats sharing the fun with like-minded folks:).

Yes we do :). We need more good players to visit VRC!

Speaking of which, tonight there was a former Chinese National Team member there. Someone mentioned he's about 38 years old now and his highest ranking was 2/3 in the world. I didn't catch his name though... was too busy studying his game. Man he was smooth :D.

Apparently last month I missed Kevin Han from the US dropping by to play :(.

I'm helping cappy adapt to his Cab22 faster ... by negative reinforcement. It's a quicker (albeit disheartening) method of mastering stroke execution.

Dave, there are tons of chairs there, so don't worry about that. And if you play less than 3 or 4 games, you get a few dollars back so you won't be paying the full fee. RBC members, Correct me on this if I m wrong.

It's not about the money that much ... but the uncertainty while waiting for some members to leave, to vacate a spot. In some cases, the drop-ins would be "cold" from inactivity ...

No biggie ... I come to RBC knowing all the implications. :D

Hey Dave,

A bit off topic but anyway, how are the shoes holding up? :) I've been wearing my Typhoons for the past month. Took a bit to break them in, during which I thought the 5000V was more comfortable, but now I really love them. They definately suit my feet better than the 5000V. I'm thinking of getting another pair when they go on end-of-season sale. My knee has been healing up a bit more this past month so I'm able to actually jump about, and generally move faster about the court now. With all the extra dynamic movement, I need more cushioning than ever, and it's totally awesome. I feel almost no impact shock at all.

Umm... to get back on topic, if you and Cappy want to drop into VRC sometime, just PM me and I'll make sure you two can get signed in.

Hey Timeless,

Liked them a lot until I rolled my ankle three weeks ago. The impact-absorbing feature of this is awesome, but I was a tad concerned about the "high-clearance" between the floor and foot.

I was rushing from the backcourt to the front in "sweeping" motion when my right foot ended up 45 degrees to the net, ... the shoe gripped the court, and my forward weight rolled my ankle. Beware of putting yourself in a similar situation.

My Typhoons are sitting in the closet now ... but if you know of anyone with size US-12 feet wanting 'em, lemme know!

Dave, I noticed the soles of the Typhoons are not as high as the 5000V. I've had a lot of close calls with my 5000V's but my Typhoons, being a bit lower, seem more stable laterally and not as prone to rolling over.
