Malaysian Women Shuttlers March To Jakarta Finals
WE MADE IT...The National Women's team rejoicing their victory in qualifying for the Uber Cup Finals after defeating India in the Asian Zone qualifying tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium. Malaysia's 4-1 win won the players a ticket to the finals in Jakarta, Indonesia in May.
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- For the first time ever, the Malaysian women qualified for the Uber Cup finals based on merit when they beat India 3-0 in the Thomas/Uber Cup Asian Zone Qualifying tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium, here, Friday.
The hosts confirmed their berth in the Jakarta finals through first singles Wong Mew Choo, doubles Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui and second singles Woon Sze Mei who beat their opponents.
The country's badminton jewel Mew Choo, who regained her confidence after losing two earlier matches, collected the first point when she easily ousted Indian singles ace Aparna Popat 11-9, 11-2 in 20 minutes.
Pei Tty/Eei Hui then made the tie 2-0 when they beat Jwala Gutta/Kurian Shruti 15-5, 15-12 in 40 minutes.
Sze Mei sealed the winning point when she defeated Meenakshi Br 11-9, 11-9 in 32 minutes.
