Ok, just cancelled my CA trip. Sorry again for my CA buddies.

However, the trip to VAN is for "REAL" now!!! Just booked my ticket, and I will be in VAN in April!

Schedule:
1. Arrive @ YVR (hope this airport code is right, heheheheh) @ 11pm Fri 4/9

2. Leave @ YVR @ 8am Wed 4/14.

Hopefully meet up some BFers between Sat and Tues, especially during the wkends. Any plan (baddy related prefer, :D ) is welcome.

Finally, I am coming... ;)

Thanks for the greeting...

However, I believe BMS's tourny is on 4/4, but I won't be in town until 4/9... Unless BMS want to delay his progress.... hehehehehe... j/k

But yeah, prepared for some actions now. ;)

Oh oops...in my haste.... I forgot about that LB. Well, come play with us the Sunday you are here if you can ^_^. There are a number of BF'ers at BMS's dropin.

...I am in Vancouver that weekend staying until Monday evening. There will be lots of badminton to be played (but unfortunately I can only make it to one...family time) :(

Saturday evening (after 8:30pm), we can try the VRC again. During the day, ClearOne might be a good option. Sunday afternoon, BMS's session at Collingwood is good, evening - you can try the Richmond Badminton Club. There are others and I think someone has to take the lead. Only problem that I can see is that we will have an additional number of players showing up for what are regulars sessions (Collingwood & RBC & VRC) which might cause problems with the regular players.

At ClearOne, booking courts will help with that problem and VRC is not too bad as you can play until you drop (as long we have enough VRC members to sign in the guest...they are checking at the door).

~woohoo! Another BF buddy coming to Vancouver for a visit! Awesome! (But 4 days are just too short!)

Saturdays are probably ClearOne's busiest day. If we were gonna book courts there, we should do it early (a week or two in advanced is more than enough).

I think it'll be easier for the majority of the guys that we commit to one day at one place. Me and LB could attend all the club sessions, but not everybody can. As WWC has mentioned, there are other factors why some of us can't play for the whole stretch of days. Highly doubted about VRC and Collingwood Sundays since they both have limits on drop-ins. C1 is a possibility if we could book one or two courts for the entire evening. How about if we repeat BMS' Killarney holiday session? That's quite a success judging from the thread generated.

Oh by the way, I guess having a carry-on bag containing 50 Official BF T-Shirts would not be a good way of being cheap on shipping! ;) :D

I've been a bit absent lately, quite busy with work, and my latest injury - recovered, and re-injured again. But by the time you get here, should be able to give you all some games.

I don't have time to plan and schedule court times/dateas, but there are plently of other BFers that can do that for your stay. I'll try to keep that week relatively free so I can make at most of the times as possible.

LB will be treated to multiple lessons ;). Apart from Master Badrad, there are a host of other qualified coaches and sparing partners :). LB, make sure you loose 5 lbs before your arrival so you can thoroughly soak up the intensive training. As a compliment, on court fitness and polymetric are included, starting at maximum repetition per 15 seconds and going all the way up to 60 seconds :D.

Aiya... you better be more careful when you're nursing that shoulder, you know? Recurring injuries can be a major pain in the butt, and the injured area becomes a lot more prone to getting hurt again.

Take care of yourself, you know?

Hopefully, I can get another vacation in Sept frame, so, maybe we can meet in US Open?

I'll take ya. It was an interesting experience resting on VRC's wooden floor! :D

I'm not too sure what the Vancouver BFers have setup for LazyBuddy, but for

Sunday April 11th, there is
12noon-2:30pm at Collingwood

Also for the 11th, I have a tentative session 8:30pm-12midnite, 2 courts, location tba. If there were no other plans or other facilities, are you guys interested?

(note: do not stop trying to book other facilities because the above evening session is tentative and I won't know until 2 weeks from now)

Cheers! :D

As hosts of our city, I think we should try to give LB the maximum exposure to various baddy venues. Assuming that LB will be playing everyday (ouch... I feel sorry for body, LB ;) ), we can probably take him to 4 different places.

Collingwood is already on the schedule. VRC and ClearOne should also be top choices since they're arguably the best facilities here in the city (although we'll need some VRC BFers to bring LB there). That leaves one more place we should visit.

Cameron? RBC? Pinetree? Some place else?

For sure, Sunday at Collingwood is a "can't miss" session:D. But like VRC, we can't have a proper BF gathering for LB due to drop-ins restrictions:(. We should set aside one session specifically for everybody to meet and play with LB:). That tentative session BMS talked about is very promising.

Rick - can you think of other places that we could book two or three courts for a few hours?

I'm sure we can reserve LB a spot at the Collingwood drop-in. Is the usual amount of people there at max capacity? BMS, is the sign up list full usually?

I think the extra session's a great idea, but on the same day?

Traum

I love ClearOne because of its awesome facilities (this should be pretty evident from my other posts). But it'll probably be difficult to book more than 2 courts there under the same name because Darryl doesn't like having one particular group taking over his gym. Furthermore, because of the training sessions there, we can get at most 3 hours on Monday, and 2.5 on Tuesday.

I can try looking into Bethany (church where I held my last tournament) for Monday or Tuesday night. They have 4 decent courts there, but they are a little trouble to deal with because of their busy schedule.

Cool LB, you're coming to visit us!

Make sure you count me in guys. I'll hopefully be free to play those days :).

As for badminton venues, since LB is coming from such a long distance, as someone mentioned before, I think it would be nice to bring him to both ClearOne and VRC. I realize not everyone would be able to play at ClearOne and VRC but there aren't many (or any) similar facilities in NYC so it would be cool to show him what we have to offer here. If I remember correctly, from talking to LB in the past, he plays in regular multi-purpose gyms and has to sometimes commute a fair-long distance just to play. Shouldn't we show him the best we've got, and something different than what he has at home? Not very many people have the opportunity to play on International mat courts like at ClearOne, or at a dedicated, specifically-designed-for badminton, facility like VRC. It usually costs an arm and a leg, like the VLT or Hollyburn, to play in such environments. If we set it up right, he should be able to play at both venues as well as a couple community centres so he can meet as many BF members as possible. Just my thoughts :)...

Thnx a lot! I am looking forward to it.

If more VRC members can do it, maybe we can drag in several more others as well. Seems Sunday night is booked, so, maybe VRC for Sat???

I am not very familar with other facilities' schedule. Can someone from VAN help me to figure out a schedule, which could "utlized" the personnel and facility availabilities?

Don't worry too much about me, I will try to save as much stamina as possible before the trip. Therefore, even afternoon vs night schedule could be considered (not 4 days consecutively, though. ;) )

Sat, April 10: VRC evening?

Tues, April 13: ClearOne evening

How does that sound to everyone, especially to LB?

We could certainly reserve some court at C1 on Sunday. It's just that I don't know how well the games will turn out if we play twice during the same day. As it is, 4 days of back to back baddy is probably enough to kill LB already. :D

Very possible but it's gonna be a logistical challenge since we don't even know how many BF'ers will show up. If there's too many, then there may not be enough VRC members to sign us in:(. At least with C1, we can book two or three courts and let everybody come in to visit/play with LB.

Its really up to LB. We go to VRC every sun nite so we know there will be people to play with. If he wants to come try a different facility, he is welcome to be our guest ( its a 10 dollar guest fee and you have to bring your own birds) If there is something organized for Clear One, thats fine too. I think Darryl has his training group till 730 on sunday nites.

Reviewing my data for 2004, the average player turn-out is 22, some days more, some days less.

A double session is definitely do-able! Baddy, food, conversation, baddy, food, and sleep! :D

1st cut about my possible schedule:

Sat, April 10 evening: VRC or ClearOne

Sun, April 11 afternoon: Collingwood
Sun, April 11 evening: ClearOne or VRC or Collingwood

Mon, April 12 evening: Cameron

Tues, April 13 evening: ClearOne

So far, seems ppl give multi suggestions on Sat and Sun night between VRC and ClearOne. Is that possible to let the 2 groups to provide their "perfer" schedule, and maybe I can make a decision depend on the "demand" and "facility avaiablity" (i.e. VRC needs enough members to sign in), etc.

If there's high demand, I don't mind to add another one for Sat afternoon. However, with limited stamina, I have to consider to save energy for the rest of the days, so, can't play intensively all the time. But I don't mind to watch a little bit more, while chatting with ppl on the side.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Thanks for all suggestions. If LB is around Vancouver on Saturday, we could explore some of the sites and sounds of Vancouver east-side (heheh - main and hastings), then drop in to Britannia in the afternoon. Afterwards time for get-together dinner before evening badminton at the VRC or Clearone?

The rest of the week sounds pretty well booked, although LB could play at the VRC during the mornings and afternoons Monday and Tuesday as well.

My flight will arrive in VAN around 11:30pm (to my usual EST time, that will be 2:30am). Therefore, I am not sure about how early I could get up on Sat, even though, 4-5 hrs of sleep generally should be enough for me. Therefore, the whole day plan for Sat should be good for me. We still need to do a "vote" (might be too early as for now, since we still have 5-6 weeks) to figure out either VRC or ClearOne.

Mon and Tues morning and afternoon? I suppose not too many BFers could be around by then. However, if I can manage to get up (if I could survive double sessions on sunday), why not? :D

Am I aiming for 4 days of double sessions for baddy??? I guess if I can stay alive (maybe borrow Kwun's oxygen tank), I will really get this trip worth. ;)

Hi BMW,

The answer is RBC is too small to hold that many people.

Hey LB, any update on your Vancouver itinerary?

Has any Vancouver BFer got something in the works for LB?

Cheers! :)

I am busy training for the up coming torture sessions. ;)

I've been bothered with flu for the past 3 weeks, and trying to regain my stamina and strength. After weeks of frustration of under performance, seems things getting better the past weekend.

I think we might be able to finalize our schedule within the next week or so. I think now, ppl should have much better idea about their "plan" than 1 month ago. I am free to take any offers, anything work for majority of BFers, will be fine with me.

Once the schedule is done, maybe some BFers can help us to reserve the court(s).

Can someone please post the final itinerary once it's available since I am planning to make it to one of the sessions.

Sorry LB but given the fact that I'm away from home most of the week, the family is demanding that my weekends are for them although I can get the occassional time to play baddy on the weekends (have some credits stored up) :D

Hmmm... I was under the impression that the itinerary was pretty much settled, with just the logistical details to be worked out. But now it seems it's totally all up in the air again?

LB, I suggest you don't leave it up to us. We want you to have the best time possible, so from our list of suggested venues, please decide which of those you'd like to visit. Then we can work out the details since we know the venue schedules. The last thing we want is to take you to play at some place you didn't really want to go.

I'll only add that I, and I'm sure others would agree, strongly suggest you include both VRC, and ClearOne in your choices. ClearOne, because it's relatively easy to secure court bookings for a private BF meet. And plus it's just dayam cool to play on international mats if you haven't had the chance to do so before  :D. And VRC, for having the best quality courts & facilities in the area (argueably?).

It's totally up to LB. I thought we had pretty much set the itinerary too... for baddy anyways. VRC and Collingwood is definitely in the plan but it'll be great if we could book a session at C1 for the non-VRC BF'ers. How about a confirmed time for the VRC visit? Make it easy for folks to commit and meet up.

Just to re-iterate and make sure everyone is on the same wavelength, this was the most "recent" schedule that we've come up with: (I took out Collingwood from Sun evening since BMS said it is not available.)

Sat, April 10 evening: VRC or ClearOne

Sun, April 11 afternoon: Collingwood
Sun, April 11 evening: ClearOne or VRC

Mon, April 12 evening: Cameron

Tues, April 13 evening: ClearOne

The only decisions we need to make is where we should take LB on Sat, April 10 and Sun, April 11. I'm not sure which night would be busier at VRC, but Sunday might be a better time to visit ClearOne since they still have limited drop-ins on Saturday.

Unless someone influential and persuasive can talk to Darryl, I think we can reserve at most get two courts under the same name (but even that might be difficult). I'm also concerned that the bookings at ClearOne would get filled up since we're only two weeks away, so I strongly recommend that we fix a schedule ASAP.

i sent him an email, but mrs and little badrad will see daryl tomorrow night - they will ask him if we can get a set of bookings for Sunday night (or alternative Saturday night) for 2 courts? for 2 or 3 hours? How many and how long? I'll ask him to book under Badminton Central Forum.

I don't know if it will make any difference to you guys or not, but the BC Closed Badminton tourney is being held at the VRC from Apr 9-11. They usually play to around 6 or 7 ( sometimes to 8) on Sat nite and then there is a dinner. At this time, the tourney players will not be on court but all the regular weekend players who have been deprived of their friday games will flood in on saturday nite, along with the regular sat nite crew so... I would anticipate that it would be pretty crowded Sat nite!

Oh I see...

I don't have too much of a problem if we need to alternate schedule. Since, either way, I am sure our VAN buddies won't let me go without being sweat. :D

I can think the following solutions, and let's see which one will make everyone else feel more comfortable:

1. Still put VRC to be Sat night. Assume it will open to really late (or 24 hrs?), then, we can have some good dinner and chit chat before getting to the action. Say, if a lot of ppl don't mind stay up late, we can start to play after 9 or even 10pm, and run toward 2 or even 3 am? I can get into action with the ppl who would like to leave earlier, and the hardcore players can wait for their turns after mid night. Well, sounds like I am good, but actually not. But I will try to stay alive, until all the games are done.

2. Put ClearOne or Collingwood or any other ones to be Sat night. Move VRC to be Mon or Tues night. However, some ppl might not be able to make it, due to early schedule on 2nd day.

timeless
03-23-2004, 01:31 PM
I'll make sure I'm available to play at either/both ClearOne and VRC that weekend (Sat & Sun). I haven't been to ClearOne in quite a long time either so it'll be nice to go.

Good call about BC Closed 15Love, I didn't realize it was the same weekend. 15Love is right, it's usually really busy Saturday nights on weekends of tournaments. In the past I've seen 5-6+ court waits up to midnight which translates to any where between 10 - 20min waits. Then it usually drops off dramatically around midnight. So if you guys want to play that late then it's cool... otherwise probably better to play at ClearOne on Saturday. Since the guest/drop-in at VRC is good for an entire day, technically if you start right after midnight, I suppose you could come back and play anytime on Sunday too :). Another thing to also consider LB, you could watch the BC Closed Finals which are usually all played on Sunday morning till mid afternoon. It's not international caliber but the finalists will most likely be comprised of A level players, some national competitors and even jr. national champions. So it's about as high a level you'll find around here of active competitors. Admission to spectate is free.

LazyBuddy
03-23-2004, 03:24 PM
10-20 min waits up is nothing new to me. :D

Now seems we have 3 choices for Sat night now:

1. Just play in ClearOne on Sat night, and move VRC to Sun night.

2. Play in VRC on Sat night, come in late, as we enjoy a good relax dinner, and play with less intensive schedule at first, then, rock after mid night.

3. Play in ClearOne first, after midnight, storm back to VRC and play as long as we could. :D

Let's see which one draw the most vote...

Just wanna make this clear: You're referring to Sunday night here, right, badrad?

Court 5 and 6 are absolutely horrible. It's really difficult to judge your distance and various spatial relationships there, and the lighting in that area is not the greatest (although it is still leagues ahead of what you'd find in community centers).

yes - courts 5/6 are the ones that are quite busy and tunnel vision distractions. but should still be fun to play. It is Sunday night, from 7:30 to 10pm.
Shuttles - Hey BMS - thought maybe you have spare tubes kicking around. Just kidding, normal practice - everyone pitches in shuttles for their games. Since we will likely play an even amount of games, we should all be pretty fair in shuttle usage.

From my personal experience, when I play at a new place (I've never been to C1 before) and with new players, I don't want to add a third factor of different flight characteristics of shuttles between points/games.

I would like to suggest, if someone would supply a few tubes of the same birds and everybody chip in, and when there are no more left is when we bring in our personal supplies. If no wants to do it, I can offer my Sosan Blacks, which we use at Collingwood (Wood_22_Chuck & Cappy75 can attest to their quality).

Because I have very little experience with the Winex shuttles, I know with the Sosan Black we will need around 3 tubes, unless everybody changes changes the shuttle after 5 points, I'm estimating 2 shuttles per game.

I think we have always been thinking VRC on the Saturday night. Although it is likely the fallout from the BC Open will cause some larger than normal crowds on Saturday night, the upside with playing at the VRC on the Saturday evening is that more of us can stay up later into the wee hours. For those of you who are early risers on Sunday morning for work or other reasons... well - tough!:D mrs. badrad had 3 hours of sleep from when we finished with Kwun early Sunday morning and her workshift a few hours later. So if this ol' lady can do it....:D

Anyways, there should be ample VRC members around, but a headcount should help prevent any miscalculations and obvious problems with the guest fee nazis.

BC Closed tournament is going to be held at VRC from April 9 - 11..so I guess the courts will be used up for the weekend..

It's a 24/7 facility, right? So we could catch some baddy tourney action first on Sat. and then play after they're done. Only thing is... might not get enough sleep for Collingwood in the afternoon and C1 later in the evening the next day:p.

If Sat is starting to look troublesome, here is a suggestion

Sat 2-5pm @ Killarney Community Centre private court rental
Sat midnite - 4am-ish @ VRC
Sun 12noon-230 @ Collingwood, no big deal if not too many BFers can show up because drop-ins are limited
Sun 730pm -10p @ C1
Sun 1030pm rush back to VRC & try to play past midnite!

Remeber, Monday is a holiday.

Hey JChen99,

Do you know what's the max. drop-in capacity allowed on Monday nights at Cameron? If the folks at Pinetree gets one of their playing days cut, they'll definitely take over Cameron Monday for sure. Is Tuesday night drop-in at Pinetree still on? Pinetree could be the alternative in case Cameron doesn't work out.

Cameron max is something about... 32-40... as fo pt... tuesday/thursday depending on the # of courts should be ppl to fit in # of courts + 8-12 per 6 courts. As for tuesdays being cut... it's not likely unless there's a holiday...

Wow, this schedule looks really challenging ;) But, that's exactly what I am coming for. Just survived 19 hrs of action this weekend, so, mentally prepared about how tough the work might be. :D

C1 on Sunday night - we are confirmed for courts 5/6 from 7:30 to 10pm. I paid tonight, so depends on how many show up. The total cost for the 2.5 hours/2 courts was $75, so we will split the cost then. Currently with about 12 people, will be $6.25.

Courts are booked under Badrad.

Just get yourself to 49th Ave, and take the bus heading East. Once you pass Victoria, the next major intersection is Elliot. When you keep going, you're gonna see a huge (and I mean gigantic) highschool to your left. That's Killarney, and that's where you wanna get off. The community center is just behind the highschool.

Word of caution: The Killarney Community Center's lighting isn't the greatest. I tend to lose sight of the birdie during a clear. Then again, I admit my eyes are kinda bad...

Kwun is just being modest! He easily played twice the number of games I did that day, and he was still moving pretty quick at the end. I was impressed. Boy did we enjoy that late night snack/meal though... mmmMMMMMM!! Nothing like stuffing yourself after a hard day of badminton. Which brings me to my next point, LB, do you like sushi? I know you can get almost anything asian in NYC as far as food goes, but isn't sushi still relatively expensive there? The sushi here, is arguably the most inexpensive (and among the most delicious) in the world! :D

What type of food does your tastebuds crave? Especially after long hours of baddy?

Give us some ideas, this way we could set something up between sessions or have it take-out to the courts! (I know, most facilities will not allow food in the gym, but I'm pretty sure there will be areas where food is allowed.)

I'm not sure...but I know it's gonna be late (at least past 1am) because we're gonna play until we drop!...I think we stayed pretty late last time when kwun was in town?

As for what time we get started, this will depend on when each of the VRC members get to the place. But probably it has to be after 8pm because there might be a lot of juniors playing before.

I think there are a couple ways of doing this:

1.) Get everyone to meet at the front door at a specific time, say 9pm or something.

2.) Non-members "pair-up" with a VRC member before going there. So the meeting time will be decided by each individual pair.

3.) Have someone wait at the front door to record which VRC member has arrived. When a guest comes, the person will find the VRC member to sign the guest in.

Just a reminder that it is the Sat of the BC Closed tournament at the VRC so it won't be the usual Sat day crowd with priority to juniors. The tournament is pretty small so you might be able to get on court as early as 7

7pm?

Consider the fact that quite a few BFers (including me, of course) will stay for a long long time (1 or 2 am at least), maybe we can play "safe", and meet around 8 or even 9pm. This way, we can have a good dinner, relax, and prepare to rock an roll.

If the majority feel like to kick my butt as early as possible, 7pm is also fine. :D

Regarding VRC on Saturday night, typically it isn't very busy from about 8PM-9:30PM, but then all regulars come in and sometimes it's a mad house from 9:30PM-midnight. After midnight it usually tapers off dramatically and we'll have very little wait inbetween games. This is usually the case on any given Saturday, including tournament weekends, except that it might be busier.

We could just go early and get a feel for what to do. If it gets insanely busy, we could always leave and go chat, have snack & drinks, and then come back around midnight. Or just enjoy the chaos of it all and play through all night, and have snacks n drinks afterwards. Either works for me, but yes, we should nail down a time very soon. One thing to note regarding a meeting time, sometimes VRC posts a "sentry" desk at the front foyer. This person will enforce all people coming to the door to sign in immediately, and won't allow non-members to go looking for their member friends inside. This person will also enforce that each guest has a member to sign them in. So in other words, be honest with your time, and make sure you're not late! We'll have to be organized or there will be grounds for other non-BF VRC members to complain.

I think that would be a safe time to go. If you don't see any BFer's then you always know members of Aily's group. I'm sure one of them would sign you in. Or perhaps even contact her before hand to guarantee sign in? I'm sure she could organize something/someone to sign you in at that time. Right here on the red spot : http://www.sfu.ca/~mickeyc/shoulder.JPG

I think I injured it by doing too many behind the back shots as thats when I feel the most pain. Now it hurts when I lift my arm up pass 45 degree and it hurts like hell when I rotate it.
