rejang 02-21-2004, 08:43 PM Our shuttlers beat under-strength Koreans to cruise into the final
BY RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia set up a mouth-watering final clash with China today when they scored an impressive 3-0 win over South Korea in the semi-finals of the Thomas Cup Asian Zone qualifying tournament last night.
But the Koreans did make it easier for the hosts by fielding a surprise line-up.
Malaysia jumped at the opportunity and Wong Choong Hann, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Mohd Roslin Hashim duly delivered the points at the packed Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras.
China, who rested their former world number one Chen Hong, outclassed Japan 3-0 in a lopsided semi-final.
The South Korean, too, decided to rest their current world number one Lee Hyun-il. They also split up their top two doubles pairs – Lee Dong-soo-Yoo Yong-sung and Kim Dong-moon-Ha Tae-kwon.
But national singles chief coach Misbun Sidek did not want to buy the idea that South Korea were not serious about beating the hosts yesterday.
“They did not hand it (the victory) to us. They were hoping to win their second and third singles and win another point through their second doubles.”
With the changes in line-up, Choong Hann and Tan Fook-Wan Wah gave Malaysia an expected 2-0 lead but second singles Roslin had to fight to prevent the South Korean strategy from working.
He had to bounce back from a game down to beat Park Tae-sang 8-15, 15-7, 15-7 in a 70-minute marathon.
“I knew my match was crucial. I did not play well in the first game.
“But I have beaten him twice before and I rediscovered my form. I’m glad I was able to pull it off,” said Roslin, who played a more aggressive game yesterday.
World number five Choong Hann played Shon Seung-mo. He staved off some early resistance to beat the youngster 15-10, 15-1 in 45 minutes.
“I was a bit cautious in the first game. I took some time to get adjusted and then, I knew I could take him on. It's good to be able to deliver the first point,” he said.
“We will face China tomorrow (today) and if I have to meet Chen Hong, I will be ready.”
Just a day after being furious with Tan Fook's performance, national doubles coach Yap Kim Hock gave the double specialist a chance to redeem himself. This time Tan Fook delivered.
With better co-ordination and a more aggressive approach, Tan Fook-Wan Wah handed the South Korean third ranked pair of Yim Bang-eun-Kim Yong-hyun a duck in the first game and won the second game 15-12 to put Malaysia in the lead with two points.
“I gave him a chance to prove himself. And just look at him, he was a different person today. He was on the court to show that he can play good badminton. I guess sometimes, we need to be harsh on some players,” said Kim Hock, who lashed out at Tan Fook after the defeat against Hong Kong's top pair Liu Kwok Wa-Albertus Susanto Njoto on Friday.
“Probably, the match could have been tougher if the Korean first doubles (Dong-soo-Yong-sung) had played. Nevertheless, the crowd was happy with their performances and hopefully it will lift their morale.”
Said the 29-year-old Tan Fook: “I am happy the coach gave me a chance after I was criticised for my performance the other day. I was down after the defeat yesterday but today, I certainly was able to lift my game a notch higher.”
With the three points won, the two remaining matches between Yong-sung-Ta-kwon and Koo Kien Keat-Gan Teik Chai and Lee Chong Wei against Park Sung-hwan were not played.
Misbun, meanwhile, was happy with the team's overall performances but predicted a tough encounter against China today.
“We will field the best team. It will be a great opportunity to play with the top players from China. It will be tough but I am sure our players will give their best,” said Misbun.
He, however, did not want to comment on whether Roslin or debutant Kuan Beng Hong will play today. Roslin has never beaten a Chinese player in the last two years.
Korea never fail to surprise badminton fans.
in the last edition of the TC, they came out telling everybody that they are the strongest and will be the winner, etc. only to end up not qualifying for the final rounds.
now they decide to field such an lowly field of players in the qualifying around. perhaps they know something that we don't? are they trying to pick their opponents?
to be honest, it may not be bad for them to play the "stronger" teams like China or Indonesia, they have a good chance of taking both doubles against China and then only need to take one singles. they still have good chances at the doubles against the Indonesians and also will definitely take one singles spot from Lee HI....
I think winning losing T Cp and Sudirman depends on surprise packages and
one hit wonders.
China would be foolish to display their real doubles strength,
in past t cps doubles had ad-hoc combinations.
spectra 02-22-2004, 12:19 AM almost have a heart attack when watched roslin play against chen hong....hahaha.
i start watching it when they start the 2nd set....
phew...luckily i didn't miss the exciting match...
results? results?? please update us...
Will be excited to watch Chen Hong and Wong CH. Chen beat Wong in their last encounter..
Cheung 02-22-2004, 01:07 AM I, too, am surprised at the S Korean's decisions. Olympic ranking points are available for individuals for their victories. But when it comes to team tactics, Koreans are not always the best tacticians.
spectra 02-22-2004, 01:47 AM i can't really remember the result for roslin v chen hong ...
all i knew is won by straight set...
the 2nd set is 17 - 16 or 17-15...
sorry for the unclear result..
then koo kien keat and gan tek chai against chai and fu (if not mistaken )
7-15 7-15
now lee chong wei against lin dan
15-2 or 3 , 5-6 (still in progress)
sorry for the bad result update....
spectra 02-22-2004, 01:53 AM chong wei n lin dan..
2nd set...
now is 5-9
looks like it's going to the rubber set..
during the 1st game lin dan didn't really move..but now....hm....back in action i guess....maybe it's a tactic ???
who's winning/losing on those matches?
Lin Dan must be on his "i don't care attitude" tactic again.
if i guess it right, Chen Hong must have lost. Roslin has that amazing capability to retrieve any shots and Chen Hong is most afraid of those players.
Cai/Fu is the Chinese men's pair...
who's playing 2nd doubles and 3rd singles? what happened to WongCH?
Whats the update regarding Lee Ch and Lin Dan?
spectra 02-22-2004, 02:02 AM 8-13 now....
chong wei is getting to move in court now...unlike just now...more on defence...
Cheung 02-22-2004, 02:06 AM Spectra, you are really keeping people in suspense by telling the score but omitting which player has which score!:(

but he didn't argue....just stand in disbelief....
i'm not there live....but just now during roslin match against chen hong...
i saw on tv is out ...but they said is in...
hm....
ah.. same old tactic. WongCH has seen many of those in China. looks like Lin Dan is well prepared for that to happen.
live feed is way too slow. i got around 1/2 secs and then got disconnected.

and masuk is "in"!
the only two Bahasa Indonesia (and Malaysian?) words i know... haha. :D
and i think "lima" is 5.
Lee Wan Wah / Chan Choon Ming vs. Sang Yang / Zheng Bo !!
so that's the tactic. Malaysia gamble on winning two singles and one doubles!
rejang 02-22-2004, 02:53 AM What software to open the link? I cannot get connected on RealPlayer?
spectra 02-22-2004, 02:54 AM oh well...
that's ll i can update ...
because mom is back...and she don't let me watch...
well... i guess kwun can keep us update on the last 2 match...
Yap Kim Hock will be in SO much trouble if Lee Wan Wah / Chan Choong Ming loses.....
correction. Lee Wan Wah / Chew Choong Eng vs. Sang Yang / Zheng Bo.
3-1 China (i think)
1-3 2nd server.
i can only tell who's leading by the cheer of the crowd....
3-6.
interesting i can tell the difference in sound between Chinese and Malaysian smashes.
Malaysia sounds more like a "pack", while China's is like a deeper "boom".
6-6 now!
10-6. Lee/Chew got 7 pts in a row!
avalanche on the Chinese side, 11-6. 12-6 now. what's going on?
15-6! Malaysia got 12 points in a span of 5 mins!

- 73* - 02-22-2004, 03:36 AM who r playing 3rd singles?
Kuan Beng Hong vs. Bao Chunlai.
can't help but to wonder. what was Misbun thinking not fielding WongCH / Roslin / LeeCW but instead Roslin / LeeCW / KuanBH ?
double 02-22-2004, 03:40 AM can someone summarize the result of the prevoius matches?
where's Wong CH? what's the result of first double?
Thanks!

koo kien keat / gan tek chai lost to Cai/Fu 7-15 7-15
LeeCW lost to Lin Dan 15-2 13-15 6-15
LeeWW / Chew CE bt. SangY / ZhengB 15-6 15-12
now Bao is leading 4-1 on decider match.
Beng Hong is playing TC first time, in fact, may be playing his first important international match!
last time Bao did that, he lost the importnat semi-final TC to Malaysia. but two years later, let's hope Bao has learned to stay calm and composed.
8-3
some girl in the crowd shouted "Beng Hong Gao You!" and the whole crowd went... "OOooo......"
double 02-22-2004, 03:52 AM who's 10, who's 3???

well, if the only thing you get is sound, you hear a lot more.... :)
even if Bao wins. i wonder how China will do against Malaysia in the real TC.
this Malaysian line up is weaken by an injured Chan CM and a missing WongCH.
if singles line up is WongCH / Roslin / LeeCW and China field Xia / Lin / Bao.
and doubles is LeeWW/ChoongTF , Chan/Chew and China field Cai/Fu , Sang/Zheng
how will they match up?

Tang Xin Fu must be wondering, "what have i missed that we lost to a scratch pair?"
I think Lee/Chew played a more aggresive game to force the Chinese pair to defend most of the time. They smashed a lot and exploited the defense weaknesses of Sang Yang/Zheng Bo. The Chinese pair on the other hand, became more and more nervous when they couldn't play their usual smashing game.
5-1 Beng Hong leading, i think... at least that's what i sense from the crowd.
5-4. Bao got a service fault.
longtimeuser 02-22-2004, 04:07 AM 8 - 5. Bao leading.
longtimeuser 02-22-2004, 04:09 AM 11 - 5.
longtimeuser 02-22-2004, 04:15 AM 14 - 8. Bao leading.
8-12. Kuan still hanging on... Bao must be thinking of the TC two years ago......
longtimeuser 02-22-2004, 04:15 AM Bao won. 15 - 9.
and there ends the broadcast. China is fielding almost the strongest team with the exception of Xia. Malaysia, well, is not fielding Wong (who's kinda the counterpart of Xia) and Chan CM.
well, China won singles 2-1. while they tie doubles 1-1.
the score in doubles is the best China can hope for really. they can't expect to win more than 1 match. it will be even hard if ChanCM is out from injury.
as for singles, China doesn't have a lead either. with Wong, Malaysia is considerable weaker.
(TV2 is now broadcasting Cantonese. so strange)
(i am going back to bed now. good nite all)
spectra 02-22-2004, 04:26 AM i think misbun wanted to see how good is beng hong....but i think if the real tc...he'll field choong hann and roslin....cause he'll pick the best player at that time...under misbun...anything can happen...:p
on the stratch pair...choon eng and wan wah....they're more on offence instead of defence....if like before choong ming and choon eng... they're more on defence....
went down rather quickly to Bao. i doubt he will be fielded in the finals.
likely lineup will then be WongCH / Roslin / LeeCW. may be blend in a surprise Hafiz to counter a potential Bao in the 3rd singles. Bao will certainly be sweating ice cubes if he sees Hafiz standing on the other side.
rejang 02-22-2004, 05:07 AM As a diversion and to answer Kwun's mystery re TV2, it is very common for M'sia and S'pore channels to do so. Fact is both are multi-racial countries with significant minorities. In the case of M'sia, all the TV channels (except RTM1) broadcast programs (and adverts) in all the major languages (Malay, English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil). There are no separate channels for each language. The major "national" type of programs such as live telecast are in the national language, Malay.
Cantonese is broadcast on top of Mandarin becos it is the most widely spoken Chinese dialect.
Roslin won chen Hong? thats good..
I think Lee/ Chan combinationis a betterthan Lee and Choong. Choong does alot of unecessary mistakes alot.

yeah....i think lee / chan is better than their previous partnering...they're more aggressive....which is good...but... their physical fitness level must be high...cause aggressive play use alot of energy...instead of defense play

I must say again "If I was LiYongBo, I would not send ChenHong to Athens."
LinDan, AXia XuanZe and Bao ChunLai are the best combination.
ChenHong is not number one now ,I think he could never re-entry the number one.

I think Lin Dan will rise up to the next no1 what do you think..
interesting that both Korea and Malaysia are putting their best players on reserve. what are they trying to hide? surely the TC finals are 3 months away, anything can happen. there is no need to try to hide their player's form from their competitor. injury? to not show injury or to prevent injury? maybe.
kudos to YapKH for trying out the pair of LeeWW / Chew CE. beat the 2nd chinese pair quite convincingly.

sunzhi 02-22-2004, 08:26 PM I think Lin Dan shd take the no. 1 position in the coming week ranking, having won all his matches here. Don't discount Chen Hong too early, he has what it takes to be one of the best...
