I would usually extend my hand first over the net, but sometimes the other side won't extend as much... so I had to change and shake hands under the net.

well, I've never done any shakehand. I give a "Wai" to everybody instead. :) :) :)

I was taught to shake hand above the net, or outside the court.

i used to shake over or under. i'm kind of short, so it was usually under. but then i started going to more tournaments and i noticed that a lot of the people hi-five instead of an actually shake. so now i hi-five over the net.

In a casual setting (ie/ regular players), if I get to the net first, I usually lift-up the net with the handle of my racquet (ie/ I'm holding the shaft), extend my non-racquet hand for a hi-five under the net (thus, I'm a righty).
In a first-time meeting or a tournament, if I lost the game I will offer my sweaty hand, :P oops, I mean after wiping my hands, I will reach over the net with my right hand. :D

I usually high five now. Depends on the people I'm playing. I picked up the "high five" from my coach. He did it with his badminton buddies and with us whenever we played him. So I just started doing that too.

We (people and me) don't shake hands, instead, we say "thanks" :)

I used to do over the net handshakes quite often due to the fact that I'm quite tall. However besides playing at a private club, I get the opportunity to play at recreational clubs too and many players at these rec clubs tend to shake hands below the net. I guess because I've gotten accustomed to under the net handshakes, I 've shifted to doing those more often.
i am a over the net shaker. i do come across ppl who shake under the net.
most pros i remember do shake over the net. i wonder if there is even a rule for shaking hands...

I m usually over the net but if the other guy has his hand under the net, then that is fine. Over the net shake hand seems like more champion-like. hehe

For me, if it's shaking hands, it's usually under the net. Sometimes we're lazy / goofy, so we just give high fives over the net.

Upon seeing the title I instantly thought "firmly"
I hate limp handshakes.

Lift the bottom of the net up and shake hands waist-height. Sometimes get confused, when reaching out for handshake and was greeted with a mid-high fives:D AND extremely p***-off when others refuse to shake hands (no sportsmanship..lah!):(

Well, at a club, I will definitely shake hands under the net, sometimes over, but usually under.
With my doubles partner, we usually give high fives, sometimes very loud ones, or sometimes I play with him and miss purposely!
It depends. Most of the times i shake hand.. over the net. But in some places where i play , some people don't even shake hands when the game is over.

I know cultures are different around the globe but do you not find this rude?
The end of the game handshake is tradition, the looser says well played and the winner says good game. It's all part of the fun, making silly pertinant remarks at the end to sometimes wind up the opposition.

hi-5 over the net or fist bump over the net

How to shakehands? First reach for their right hands with your right hand, grasp firmly, then look them in the eyes and shake:p. Smiles are optional, but definitely makes the game more enjoyable in the end:).

its not neccesarily rude i think. but it depends of course.
if like everybody knows each other theres not much point. there are other ways of aknowledging each other. some times a friendly smile or chat up after the game is worth a lot more than a formality when it is among friends i suppose.
this seems to be even more apperent when 1 court is being shared by 6 to 8 people and time is money and fun. so most ppl just get over a game and 'who's next' or 'who wants my spot coz im tired'. this seems quite normal from where im from.
but of course if one is playing amongst unfamiliar faces or grounds one should always practice the outmost respect for the opponent especialy after the game. hand shaking after a tournament match or friendly is a sure thing here and i havent personally observed anyone handshaking from the bottom net after a game.... from where im from at least.

just wondering, do any of u guys occasionally get these guys that dunt actually shake ur hand after a game. i mean i reach out to shake this guy's hand and he blatantly ignores me and just looks away. IMO he was rude and has no sportsmanship. Not that i care very much anyways cuz i hate him, but i just shake hands with ppl to show that i have sportsmanship. What would u guys do if this happens to u? dont even bother attempting to shake his hand the next time?

thats nice mjwhitfieldAhh come on, I'm joking. I don't mind how people shake hands, so long as they do. I make it a point to not play with or against people who aren't poilte at the end of a game.

i ALWAYS shakes hands below the net...due to myself being vertically challnged:rolleyes: . (im 5.2 or 3) but since most of the people i play in my age group aren't that tall anyways, it works out for every1.:) but seiously does it really matter?

Try shaking over the net, while using the racquet below to sort of pat the opponent's bottom (!) as done by Sigit during TC 2002 to Chan/Chew, sort of gesturing to them, "You're doing fine lads, keep at it!".
Caution: Do not try this after XD games, especially if the opponent's partner is his or her girlfriend/wife (or boyfriend/husband) ... ;)

i spose it depends on the height of the opponent. it wud be a little unfair to reach over the net and the midget jumping up and down

well most of the time i shake hands over the net but there are the times that i go over to the other side and do it i guess i really only do that if it was a great game, and well if the person is vertically challenged then i will shake under the net.

Above the net shows more respect, because it's placed higher. And to really show respect, be the first to attemp to shake hands.

it would be funny if the badmin match was just a warm up for the handshake race:D

I pretty much always shake hands over the net because I'm 6'4", I'd probably injure myself if I tried to shake hands under the net :o .

I feel sorta strange replying to a thread that was last answered to 4 years ago... @_@
But anyway, recently I was playing a match against this guy at my club, and I ended up beating him (even though I strongly believe that he was going easy on me) and when up to him to shake hands, he just handed me the shuttle instead #_#. I just stood there staring at the shuttle while he walked away and then started snickering when I realized what had just happened. It looked sort of strange because I was just standing in the middle of the court laughing by myself. I walked away when I noticed that everyone was staring at me... ^_^

Something similar happened to me once, but instead of handing me a shutttle, my opponent handed me his racquet thinking that I wanted to see it or something... ^.^

depends. when i played with the usual friends, we never shook hand because we ebd up chatting while catching our breath for the next game. when we play with others that is not familiar to our group, we usually just smile, nod and say thank you. some even put their hands up in the air while nodding and smiling and saying thank you. :D but once i entered a competition just for fun and i shook the opponents' hands under the net because we were all shorties. cant reach above the net comfortably. :)
