HAVING led Malaysia into the Thomas Cup Finals, Wong Choong Hann has more confidence for the Swiss Open and All England.

The southpaw, who did not play in the qualifying final against China because of a back injury, did some light workout yesterday.

He will hit the courts today to iron out the chinks in his armour as he aims to bag at least one of the two titles.

"After the Korean match, I felt numb on the left side of my lower back and did not want to take any risks," said Choong Hann.

"It was a muscular spasm and a good massage plus some exercises will put things right.

"There is nothing to be concerned and I'm geared up for the European events." Choong Hann has never done well in the Swiss Open and All England where he has failed to get past the third round.

"The top players want to confirm their Olympic berths. Hence, the list of entries in both tournaments comprises the heavyweights in world badminton." said Choong Hann.

"So unlike other tournaments, there won't be any easy matches." On the team's performance in the Thomas Cup qualifiers, Choong Hann was happy the younger players like Lee Chong Wei and Kuan Beng Hong adapted well.

"The duo held their nerves well despite making their debut," said Choong Hann.

"It is not easy playing in a team event as the burden is greater. The experience will do them a world of good." Choong Hann hopes the duo keep up their performances especially when they play in Europe.

Many former Swiss Open champions – Roslin Hashim, Marleve Mainaky, Mia Audina Camilla Martin and Flandi Limpele-Eng Hian – have confirmed their participation this year.

Is it just me, or does the title: ...."ironing out the chinks", seem a bit racist. Perhaps holding a hidden meaning...

Not to everybody, it isn't. "Chinks in the armour" is a legitimate definition for weakness in a plan or a player. I never came across the loaded meaning until I came to N.A. If most of the world aren't acqainted with the north american vernacular, it has little meaning to the rest of the world. Hidden meaning or not, we must judge the whole article rather than just the word itself.

Of course I am aware of the phrase. Intentionally or not, I find that there is more than one meaning to the heading. The journalist who wrote that must have got a pad on the back!

Anyhow, just thought I would share it with you.
