ok. i think this will be fun to do.

All England 2004 will be happening next week, let's see who can guess who the winners are!

Prizes

winners will get a BC T-shirt, in size of their choosing, shipped. (as i have so many of them now... :) )

How to enter

here is how the contest will work:

send me a PM with the following:

the winner and runner-up of each of the 5 event finals (ie. i want to see 10 names) in the following format:

MS - Peter Gade beatt Chen Hong
WS - Pi beat Mia
MD - ...
WD - ...
XD - ...

and then when the results comes up, i will do a calculation of how close each entry gets. 2 pts for guessing the winner correctly, 1 pt for guessing the runner-up correctly.

the entry who gets the most points will win the T-shirt!

deadline will be 1am PST Tuesday March 9th. all entries time stamped after that date will be disqualified...

incomplete entries will be disqualified

small prints : administrator and moderators (and future and present relatives) of BC/BF are ineligible. professional players participating in the AE are ineligible (sorry JR/TL ;) ). only one entry per member.

Kwun, it's going to be a huge list of people :) (in 5 areas)
Maybe you want to do it starting from the final 16?
(starting from qual. is a long long way)

BJ, what do you mean? you only need to give me 10 names for the 10 finalists...

oh oh oh, I thought I have to submit EACH game starting from the qualifyings.... :p

Sure, 10 names is easy :)

I am in for sure.

ok. i have modified the instructions.

i guess technically, it is 16 names for the doubles pairs, but i think that should be pretty clear.

A little bit question regarding to the "scoring system".

Say, the correct entry should be A bt B, according to this scoring system, the possible result will be:

1. Ans: A bt B: 3
2. Ans: A bt C: 2
3. Ans: C bt B: 1
4. Ans: B bt A: 0???
5. Ans: C bt A: 0???
6. Ans: B bt C: 0???

Also, I think with 1, 2, 3, the final result (5 events) might be too close to determine the winner. Also, this might give very low scoring for most participants (I don't want to get "0" as my grade, u know)

Here's my suggestion (might be more work for Kwun, sorry...):

If the correct answer is A bt B:

1. Ans: A bt B: 8 (perfect, hard to get)
2. Ans: B bt A: 5 (not easy to correctly identified the finalists)
3. Ans: A bt C: 3 (know the champ is good)
4. Ans: C bt B: 2 (not bad to know the runner up)
5. Ans: C bt A: 1 (well, still better than nothing)
6. Ans: B bt C: 1 (same as #5)

This way, correctly identify the result is still way outstanding, well give some encouragement for the not so-lucky participants.

If I still score a "0", I won't complain this time... :o :D

Here's another thought:

2 stage scoring system:

Stage 1: Correctly identify the 2 finalists. Each right name (pair) worth 2 points.
Stage 2: Correctly identify the final result. Correct Champ name: 3, correct Runner up name: 2, correct name, but wrong rank: 1 for each name (pair)

Ex: Final result A bt B

1. Ans A bt B: Stage 1: 4, Stage 2: 4 ---> 8
2. Ans B bt A: Stage 1: 4, Stage 2: 2 ---> 6
3. Ans A bt C: Stage 1: 2, Stage 2: 3 ---> 5
4. Ans C bt B: Stage 1: 2, Stage 2: 2 ---> 4
5. Ans C bt A: Stage 1: 2, Stage 2: 1 ---> 3
6. Ans B bt C: Stage 1: 2, Stage 2: 1 ---> 3

Compare to my previous one, this one "encourage" even more for participants. And ppl have good knowledge (knowing good players) but not luck (wrong rank), might get a better chance to shoot for the grand prize!

Kwun, don't hate me.... heheheheheh...

Damn, lost my shirt because Gao/Huang got the WO instead of Yang/Zhang. Hmmm... I should let them know my T-shirt was on the line... :D

Great job, guys!

Kwun, now u know, my "complicated" method has its little usage for case like that... ;) :o

Thanks kwun for your generosity for giving out 3 shirts instead of one! And thanks to my worthy opponents, Libra and Hugo, for sharing the spoils. I thought we were finished when Zhang & Gao were knocked out so early in the game by their political rivals and when Cai & Fu were shockingly eliminated by the irrepressible Malaysians!

Thank goodness LB's scoring system came a little late but we've got to be more careful next year when kwun adopts it. Otherwise, Libra will be the sole winner!

But I better PM kwun soon before I lose sight of my beloved T-shirt! We worked very hard for it, you know, putting on our thinking caps and studying the draw very carefully. So despite the shocks, we still prevailed! Congratulations to my co-winners too! ;) :p :D

Hey Hugo!

Did you realise that our entries are almost identical, except for the MS Runner-up? Even for this difference, we both chose a Chinese player, me Chen and you, Xia. Have you ever thought of Peter Gade? I must confess he did not feature as prominently as he subsequently deserved. I've toyed with the idea of choosing Taufik Hidayat instead.

GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE??? :p

Anyway congrats to you too.

Hugo
03-17-2004, 04:22 PM
Yes, indeed, great minds think alike!! :D

For my MS runner-up, I was at first inclined to pick Chen Hong. But after some thinking, I thought the reigning MS world champion would have to snap out of his drought sooner or later, and what perfect locale to do it at the All-England, as he's won it a few years ago! In the end, both Xia and Chen failed early, but we were lucky to retain at least some points from Lin!!

Congrats to you and Libra!

I'm sure we're all looking forward to Kwun's next contest!! Maybe next time, the prize will be a brand new MP-100 or Armortech 700 (cough cough, nudge nudge!!):p :p :p :D :D :D

kwun
03-17-2004, 04:34 PM
MP100!?! may be for the Olympics, eh? can't afford to give out a big prize everytime as BC/BF is very poor. but hopefully things will be better soon.

btw, sorry winners. haven't had a chance to drop by the PO. was sick for a few days. but will definitely be sent out the prizes in the next day or two.

^^

LOL, it was just a joke!!! We are all very happy with how far BF has come. I'm sure we all appreciate you for putting maintaining BC/BF as first priority and then everything else second...
