2004 Altona Open and Graded tournament

13 March - 14 March
Altona stadium,
Victoria

The 2004 Altona Open draw and graded draw are now available.
The tournament will feature members of the Australian team selected for the Oceania Championships.

Men's Singles sees Australian team members Hung Pham seeded 1
and Lenny Tjoe seeded 2.
Ladies Singles sees Australian team members Lenny Permana,
Kellie Lucas seeded 2 and Tania Luiz seeded 3/4.
Ladies Doubles sees Australian team members Kellie Lucas
and Tania Luiz teaming up as 1st seeds,
and Lenny Permana second seed.
Mixed Doubles sees Australian team members Lenny Permana
and Hung teaming up as 2nd seeds.

Ex Australian team members Murray Hocking is competing in Men's Doubles
and Mixed doubles, and is seeded 1.
Andrew Surnam (South Australia) has entered in the Men's Singles and Men's Doubles. Andrew recently competed in the ACT Open, where he won the Open Mixed Doubles with Jessica Wainwright.

Attended the meet at 9am in the morning, nice drive from Ormond to Altona via Citylink. My friend (J.Chen) was competing in the mens A grade Singles that day, unfortunately he lost and was out of the finals, but great game though.

Saw Raymond Ong and Murray Hocking play the mens doubles in Open Grade, they were awesome as usual!!! I know its not Thomas Cup stuff, but I learnt a lot by watching these good players. Saw quite a number of foreign players from NZ and Indonesia in the Open Grades too, they were pretty impressive, but a long way to go compared to the top Asian countries....

Watching top grade players compete is very addictive, now I'll be looking forward to attending meets in Ballarat, Bendigo and Kilsyth, hopefully with regular training, I'll be able to compete in the B Grade meets, but for now I'll have to contend with my social and training meets first till I'm confident enough to compete.

Maybe all the Victorians on www.badmintonforum.com can meet and attend these meets together, it'll be fun to expand the social circle in badminton here in footy and cricket crazed Australia!!! Emailing would be a great way to start, when's the next big meet BTW, does anybody have any idea?

Sounds like my first absence from Altona in 3 years was not worth the while! :( Never mind I probably would have been a first round knock out based on my current form anyway... :rolleyes:

Wondering how many falls Raymond had this time in the finals and if Murray managed to yell at him "GET UP - GET UP!" whilst covering shots all over the court! :D

He didn't fall during the time I was watching..... but I didn't stay till the end of the tournament, had to leave at 12.30pm.... so sad....because realestate agents don't wait for nobody on Saturdays.....:p

Watching Rae Mun (yes it's actually Rae Mun) play is hilarious, his footwork is shall we say, unique. It used to be even funnier when he used to play singles for Australia. Everyone else had very smooth, very conventional technique yet he used to outsmart them so easily had just made them run around until they collapsed.

Next biggish suburban tournament is CBA I think end of May, though that doesn't have Open grade from memory (it's been a long time since I played it). I won't be playing though, no matter who asks me (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! ;P)

The results from Altona were interesting though, Leonard beating Hung is a good effort, Kellie pushing Lenny to 13-10 is really good, is Lenny still suffering from her injury? Boyd and Glenn making the final is cool, good to see some of the younger guys getting up. Foong and Karen making the final for Women's doubles is really, really impressive, Foong is like 18 or 19 or something, if that girl can control her temper she could go far.

I think other upcoming events are the teams events at Geelong and Taralgon. Should be fun.

Raymond is indeed a character to watch. I think his wrist strength, physical power, great anticipation and sheer consistancy made up for his unorthodox footwork.
