As I know there's some secondary schools open for people to play badminton after school hours and there's no charge at all. Did some one know where they are?

Really? You've gotta be kidding me, man. If there are such places, they would be filled instantly!

Yes, with every joe from all over the mainland trying to play, the school would have to hire bouncers at the door...

..."Can I see some ID please! OOPS, sorry but tonite is Lefties Nite, no Righties allowed!"

WOH!!! If there's a place like that, please let this 604badder know!:D

But you know what, a free dropin wouldn't be as good as it sounds. You'll have all the problems like organization, court waits, and the calibur of play would vary so much that it won't be very enjoyable for very long in my humble opinion.

Break-My-String

That's correct!. Too many players & not enough courts will only make it a waste of your time.

And you'll end up wishing you'd paid for better facilities than waste time in the freebie one:p.

Which will bring you fill circle back to BF, asking everyone where's a good place to play in Vancouver..... lots of threads on that before..... I'll just put in a plug here then for the AWSOME Collingwood session run by our own Break-My-String on Sundays at 12.

wood_22_chuck, I believe my old highschool Gladstone has free badminton on Thurs. I'm not sure at all but you can give them a call if you're interested. From what I heard it's open to everyone.

Thanks 604B ... but I do need organization and rotation to happen at solitary drop-ins ... either that, or find a core group of 4 players minimum.

BCIT (for example) has very poor rotation so it's insufferable (sufferin' suckatash!) to drop-in there without friends.

Pinetree is 800 miles away!!!! ... :D

It's a bit clique-y there, and I always end up with the giggly girls, or guys still wearing their jeans and casual runners, group of friends. The Douglas College team train on their own and keep to themselves too.

I'll go to Pinetree if I'm really itchin' to play .. but thanks for the offer, JChen99.

giggly girls? guys still wearing jean? Hmm... I guess sometimes it's like that, but for the past few months it has been ok :D
As for Douglas Team keeping to ourselves? We dont do that do we? ;) Anyway, we have practice thursday 6-8... so... I dunno if most of us can even move after that... not to mention playing :p I only stay if the kids I coach come and want to play but I usually take off before they can "convince me" (more like dragging me) into staying

Woah! Hang on for a minute there... what's the condition of the gym? And is there any restrictions for drop-ins? FREE? as in birdies provided:D?

The condition of gym is hard wood floor, white light, so you better have a yellow birds. There is no bird provide but most peoples have and of course sharing is good attitude. No drop in restriction and if the courts is full, just wait. Mostly people will rest after continued 2 games or the loser rest. If you have 4 people you may take a court for all night. At the end, around 9:45, if you are the latest group, you need to help for closing, just bring the pole and net back to storage room. That's all. Totally FREE! PM me and leave an email or phone to contact.

If this place u are refering to is gladstone highschool then i've been there
its no big secret really but then the person who opens up the gym for badminton is kind of a jerk really or just too careful

me and my friends were asked not to come there because we did not attend the school so if u don't go there i suggest not going

their floor is slippery as hell and needs a wax job but if we were still allowed to play there for free i still wouldn't mind going

i think it was an issue with if anything gets stolen and him not knowing how to come to us to see if we did anything, me and my buddies did volunteer to put up and take down nets and stuff but still no trust what so ever

my cousin still goes there since he knows the dude but as for me i just go other places around vancouver and pay to play now

if anyone else knows of other FREE places to play please hook up

Actually, I just remembered. Cameron is FREE sometimes. Wednesday/Friday 3:30-5:30 is FREE under 3 conditions.
1. You have a VALID Burnaby Drop-in Card
2. The lady in charge with the court booking (Cherri) is on shift there
3. She knows you ;)

Sometimes me n my friends go down there to play during wednesday 3:30-5:30, but it's $1.95 drop-in fee if it's some other lady on duty. But even then it's not a bad price since they dont kick you out until the next drop-in sessions (sometimes at 7pm) :D

Ugh! No evenings though. I would have drop-in if it's in the evening.

If that's the case, then potentially the freebie could get more expensive than the paid drop-ins. I don't mind paying if there's reasonable order in court rotation and decent flooring and lighting. Safety comes first in my mind.

Like I've told wood_22_chuck thursday nights at pinetree is one place, fridays at cameron is another, to fill your gap :)

Thursday and Friday evenings only... Britannia is good but too far to commute (even by Skytrain). I could drive but would like to minimise car usage. PineTree is a definite maybe:).

Pinetree is geographically further away from you, than Brittania.

Too far to commute? Off at Broadway station, then it's a 5 minute bus-ride (Granville or Downtown bus). Heck, we will sometimes walk from the broadway station to Britannia, it's so close, and there are so many things to see along the way on the Drive.

I didn't like the rotate system because playing time is too short. I just warm up and the first set is over. Then I have to wait for next round. I prefer continue game like win 2 in 3 sets or win 3 in five sets. That will be more interested.

And free place is good for promoting badminton. 4 to 5 buck is acceptable but how many hours can you actually play? 1 to 1.5 hours. That's per week and it's not enough for me. I know there's no limit in VFC (7x24) but annual fee is CND 645!

Right, walk to Britannia with my bulky 20lbs baddy bag... I don't think so:p! Also afterdark along Commercial Dr. can get pretty scary. Day time is not so bad. Actually, I discovered a nice cafe (The Libra) that plays live jazz the last time I walked back (couldn't wait for the bus) to Broadway Station from Friday night baddy at Britannia:). So, it's not all that bad but I am still looking for easier baddy places to commute to for my schedule gap:). I had a look at Surrey, pretty much everywhere there requires me to signup for membership drop-ins.

If a place w/o a proper system gets extremely busy, you're gonna see people fistfighting for courts or abuse the goodwill of others. I have see it happened and many a games ruined by combative atmosphere so many times that it's not even funny. I did not enjoy a single one of those games I played after wasting time fighting other people off the courts.

I would rather people be respectful and share the courts equally than challenge for it. If it's packed and you play extra games, that means more people on the lineup waiting longer. You certainly don't want to be the one on the receiving end of that kind of abuse.
