G'day,

I have a customer requesting me to restring his Cab-8 and Cab-9 with BG65 to 30lbs. Although I have done that tension in the past on Cabs, Tis, Swing Powers, MPs and recently an AT700, I've never done that on an alloy head racket such as Cab 8 & 9s.

I've deferred him as I don't think the racket will survive such a high tension without frame distorting but he's insisting I give it a go. These old rackets have got brand new grommets on them and are in top condition. I've done a search here and can't find anyone who has strung one beyond 24lbs.

So any stringers out there with experience in stringing old alloy Cabs to 30lbs? BTW I use a 4 point drop weight machine and I've said no twice but he's back hassling me again.

Any suggestions? I think I'll politely say no again because I don't think BG65 @ 30lbs + old Cab is NOT going to be good for my reputation as a stringer.

if he comes back continuously... get him to sign something saying he's lettin u string at his own risk so u wont be faulted if it breaks. that way he cant hassel you afterwards no matter wut happens

tricky though ... word of mouth spreads quickly. Say the racket caves in, and waiver signed, this customer would automatically (human nature) blame the stringer, and potential customers are turned away.

If the stringer's expertise is respected, then this customer would defer and say "okay, string it lower please."

Chinese proverb I read somewhere: Once words are released, even the fastest horse cannot catch.

Maybe you can tell him, after consulting with other stringers, the conclusion is "the racket is surely NOT going to survive". Then, see what he says.

Advise him of the high probablility of the frame caving in, and no stringer in the right mind would be willing to string it for the reason that, in the event of the frame caving in, the stringer's reputation may be jeopardized.

Give him 2 options:
1) Sign a disclaimer stating you can not be held responsible by any damages that may result, and go ahead and string. Also state that the customer will not get a refund.
2) Get another stringer to do the job.

A nobleman's words cannot be taken back by even the fastest horse. It just means that you must be responsible with your words.
