View Full Version : Asian Badminton Championships
The ABC will be held in Chearas BADMINTON STADIUM
end of April.
Anyone coming to KL and need some help, accomodation, places to eat, visit, etc please PM me.
Doesn't matter what creed or colour you are , better if you are a mature working adult,so easier to get along. So are you listening, Loh,Tanneepak,Novi, Shu Yi etc ?
Please dont ask me to do following though :
1) Arrange matches and playing venues. I cant.
2) Talk business.
So Ants can't say that people in Msia are not hospitable.

Thanks for the offer. However, I am having a hard time convincing my wife, as we were all set to go to China for the ABC which has since been re-scheduled to be held in KL. Anyway, there is a slim chance I might be able to come. No problem about food and accommodation, as my friends in KL can take care of the former and I get corporate discount on hotels. Will let you know.

Huh? Since when i say what Msians are not hospitable?
;)
Thanks Bbn. I will most likely be going for another visit to KLBA Cheras for the ABC and take the NICE coach up to KL, like on a Friday morning, so that I can watch the QF, SF (Sat) and Finals (Sun). Stayed two nights at Wenworth Hotel which is not too far from the Stadium. Last time I took the midnight coach from KL to S'pore on my return trip and report for work a few hours later on Mon. Will confirm details later.

Does ABC Championship have a web-site ?
Tournaments in Malaysia have very lousy websites, if there is at all.
ABC site is permanent.
During tournaments they will update.
Search Google or Yahoo etc.
I haven't bothered to do so yet.
I can understand Yong's comment, a disease called
apathy and lack of motivation, no will to excel.

I think it's the lack of technical know-how. They may not even aware that the whole world is looking for the results etc. I was quite disappointed with the Thomas/Uber Cup Asia Qualifying website. I could have done it with hands tied together, one eye closed and someone constantly knocking me on the head. We need a techie person in there to coordinate the websites and the organisation to support him, but the bottom line is that there is no budget for these sort of things.

i doubt china will be sending players who hv already qualified for the olympics, bt i hope i m wrong.. maybe she will be represented with part of the main team and some junior players..
i think the iNa team will be fun to watch even if they are juniors, they will always come up with some strange playerseg Simon Santoso.
Park Sung Hwan I think worth watching if he plays.
Chen Jing definitely if he is selected.Lu Rong if she still
plays.
Also Japan's Hirose, and a few of their men's team, they
are not likely to win but enjoy their different approaches
to the game.
Dont forget the Korean team's head coach is Li Mao amd
Japanese Gu Jia Ming, great innovators of the game.

I'm from KL, now temporarily (for almost a year already) posted in Singapore. I will go back to catch the tournament as well. As usual I plan to take a coach on Friday night back to KL and then on Sun, take a night sleeper train back to Singapore.
Whilst in Msia here's some friendly advice for first-timers :
1) Always travel in groups
2) Visit only places designated safe
3) Dont trust anyone, esp handsone strangers looking like Ants offering you a lift, there are quite a few serial killers still on the loose, like everywhere else.
4) Dont swing your handbags , rattle your jewellery, or show off your latest hand-phones, there are quite a few desperados on bikes that go round mugging people who are not alert.
So far few tourists have complained, these are not racists , they are just ordinary criminals of any color,
but just dont be an unlicky one, play safe and you'll be safe.
Do you know where i can find all the info about ABC.
The website is very poor!!! :(
Thanks

Dear all,
Personally I would do this if I were coming to KL to watch badminton.
Accomodation:
As I am not sure if there are any reasonably good hotels near the badminton hall, I would stay at the Concorde. You can book through this website which is quite cheap (http://www.holidaycity.com/concorde-kl/map.html). Staying at the Concorde would also mean that you are close to Bukit Bintang area where you can do some shopping and eating, this hotel is also located beside Hard Rock Cafe. Of course, don't forget about badminton...hehe. Try out the spa and massage facilities in the hotel, 4 stars and above are usually quite good.
Transportation:
There is a monorail station just 0.5KM from the hotel - I think it is called Bukit Nanas or something like that. I have provided here a map of the integrated rail link (http://www.monorail.com.my/network.gif), expand this map by placing your mouse over it if you are using netscape. As you can see, you will need to change at Hang Tuah station for Cheras. The only problem is that I am not sure how near the station is to KLBA. I will ask one of my friends who lives in Cheras about this, watch this space.
Another option is to take a cab. The hotel will be able to arrange this for you (ask the concierge for help, they are usually very good). Perhaps for a little extra, the cab will return to pick you up when you are done from KLBA. Of course, if you find the driver to be trustworthy, you can always arrange with him to fetch you to/from the stadium everyday, remember to get his cell phone. Also, remember to ask concierge for Taxi hotline numbers.
In my opinion, if you are coming to KL, you might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Enjoy yourselves a little bit apart from the badminton. We work ourselves to death everyday, we deserve to spoil ourselves occasionally. KL is a wonderful place to have a short break (or to live), and it is not as unsafe as perceived. In fact, it is one of the safest and cleanest cities in the region. I have lived in KL for so many years, and I have never encountered any problems. Of course, you have to be careful with your things, but aren't you no matter where you are?
Why not PM Mr. Loh?
He's staying in Wentworth about 15 mins from Stadium
by LRT.
Fairly safe area, and also convenient for food , shopping
etc.Very much like JB.
But if you want the best keep within the Bukit Bintang
Area a few KM away.
Look up acceptable hotels luke Value inn, Novotel Chain etc.in Tel book.LRT offers also a feeder bus service.

wah.... thanx for the info :D
if you feel lost the best way is to take a train from Singapore to KL Central railway in Brickfields KL.
From there all the LRT stations branch out. There are maps and info centres.
Pick any hotel nr. any station and travel by LRT and bus feeder service if you want to avoid traffic jams and taxi drivers.

OK guys,
This is a map that shows the Maluri LRT station and the badminton stadium. According to my wife, the distance apart is only 5 - 10 minutes walk. Please ensure that you are using the correct LRT line. Be aware that the trains are not 24hrs.

1. Schedule
As tournament nears, check websites (suggest www.worldbadminton.net - sometimes contain a link to the tournament website - and www.thestar.com.my for sports news). You should get the schedule there and plan accordingly. If you can't get it, plan to arrive at KL by noon, have your lunch and go to the stadium (last 8 matches usually start in the afternoon). Tickets are sold at the stadium (I also did the same when I went for the Thomas/Uber Cup competition).
2. Walking from Maluri LRT station to stadium
The stadium is walking distance from the Maluri LRT station (no shelter, so bring umbrella). Coming out from the station, walk towards the main road and turn right. Follow the road and you will reach it.
3. How to get to Maluri LRT station?
Firstly, we have a few LRT lines in KL. (The Maluri station is part of the STAR line. Other lines are PUTRA and Monorail.) These lines are not integrated, although it is planned for future integration. Imagine that the EW line is not integrated with the NS line. To go from Bugis to Orchard, you have to buy a ticket to City Hall, get out, then buy another ticket to Orchard. The LRT in KL is exactly like that.
Secondly, the STAR line has a fork (like Tanah Merah->Pasir Ris, Tanah Merah->Changi). Maluri is at one of the forks (the fork that ends in Ampang, the other ends at Seri Petaling where I stay :)). To get from Tampines to Changi, you have to change train at Tanah Merah. It is the same with the LRT in KL.
4. Where to stay?
I suggest staying near the city area, perhaps the Bukit Bintang area. There are hotels for all kinds of budget. And it is also the main entertainment district. There is also a Bukit Bintang Monorail station. But there is a small red light district there also. I'm not sure if there are any hotels near the stadium. Maybe you can do there to find out.
5. Safety
It is not as bad as Bbn makes it sound. Practise caution like you're in any city. There are many reports of pick-pocketing, but I've never been a victim staying there almost all my life. If you can survive by just taking the LRT, that would be good. The taxis can sometimes overcharge.
6. Stadium vicinity
There are some food centres across the Cheras road, but there are no pedestrian walkways across. Many people (including me) brave the hostile traffic to cross the road for food. If you don't want the hassle, package enough food and water before going.
7. Stadium itself
It is free seating, so if you want a good view, you want to arrive early, especially on final day and/or if there are Malaysian players left.
Here's the ultimate guide on how to use LRT. Explain in next thread.
If you travel by train, stop at KL Central.
To get to LRT areas take train to station called "Masjid Jamek".Get Down.
Take train ( Follow green/purple parallel lines) to either Plaza Rakyat(Chinatown), or Hang Tuah(Bukit Bintang),Pudu (Pudu, Wentworth) and look for a hotel.
When you go to Stadium take the train but switch at "Chan Sow LIn" station because after that the system splits into 2 lines.
From Chan Sow Lin take green line to Maluri Station. The Stadium is opposite Courts Mamoth beside Cheras Main Road and 100 m away from Maluri Station/Jusco Stores.
LRT stops at 11 PM, after that you will have to camp in the stadium.
As for other info wait till after (JIT) and read Staron line.
I think being safe is priority every where, I'm not saying KL is dangerous, it was even more dangerous in 80s with thugs and all that.
I cant think of any place interesting, but maybe a place nearby worth visiting will be the Bandar Tun Razak Lake Gardens near the Stadium and also the Mines Resort (A resort converted from old tin mines) a few stations away.
Maybe Times Sqauare Theme Park at Hang Tuah Station.
Cant join you guys on Semis and Finals day as work to do at that time.

Accommodation:
In my opinion, its better stay in the hotels in KL Central like Bukit Bintang area. Some nice 4 stars hotels offer great deal, example Swiss Garden a room for 2 people only RM100+ . If you have lower budget , you can find some in Jalan Alor but becareful as some Inn or Motels are cater for hanky panky customer.. :D
Transports: Taxi would be the best choise, it costs only RM5+ from the city to the stadium. if your share with friends will be much cheaper. LRT : cost RM2.5 per person to Taman Maluri then you have to walk at least 10 minutes to the stadium. There are lots of buses to Cheras area pass by the stadium too, RM1 per trip.
If you want to know more about the accommodation in KL, please let me know, I'll try to help, just let me know your budget.

When in Malaysia take great care if you need to use credit cards. When I was last in KL for the Thomas cup qualifying round in feb. someone forged my credit card and went on a spending spree in Europe. The credit card issuing banks tell me that south east asia is a black spot in credit card forgery.

msia Open could be postponed.
credit card scam is part on Int syndicate, they were in exxistence in HK since 1990s.What they do is they take your card to backroom on pretext of'veryfying" then forge it.
I think difficult to do in well managed Hotels or Retail Outlets.
I think credit card is essential if you are booking a hotel for few days.
There are of course so many other ways of high tech theft,
just practise safety.
KL is no longer the " Kua Simi, hoot you " town anymore, some of them are dotcoms.

Hi sunzhi
I read from the Star yesterday that China will be sending a mixed team led by Xia Xuanze and will include Chen Yu (MS), Sang & Zheng (MD), Wei & Zhao (WD) and Chen Qiqiu & Zhao (XD).
M'sia will be without Wong CH, but the other top Singles players like Chong Wei, Roslin Hashim, etc, will be playing. So will Sony Dwi Kuncoro (seeded 6), who has decided to return to defend his crown. Sony is currently world rank 13.
The Korean contingent will be in full force as they intend to stay behind to train at the KLBA to prepare for the TC in Jakarta 7-16 May). As a matter of fact, their No. 1 singles, Lee Hyun-il is seeded 1 ahead of Xia, countryman Shon, Chen Yu, Lee Chong Wei and Sony.
Spectators will have a chance to see Kim & Ra in action again in the XD.
The MD will also be very competitive as Choong & Lee will have to be better than Sang & Zheng, Lee & Yoo (Korea), Luluk & Alven and Flandi & Eng Hian of Indonesia to justify their no. 1 seeding.

Hi HongHong,
I hope you enjoy yourself.
By the way, I know you are living in Singapore, but are you Singaporean?
Anyway, out of curiosity, which hotel did you pick?

No no, Federal is fine. It is a central place anyway.
Your nearest station is the Monorail station (forgot what name). You can walk through Low Yatt plaza, head towards Berjaya Times square.
Enjoy...

Latest news, and pretty bad news for HoNgHoNg. According to a Chinese article, China is in full gear for their TC/UC preparations and is sending only Chen Yu and Wei Yili/Zhao Tingting will be in KL for the ABC. I believe this implicitly means that they have withdrawn all their other big guns.

That's quite disappointing, but I think the ABC will still have a very high standard. Certainly the players that are participating will try very hard as this is the last place they can collect points.
Unfortunately for me HongHong, I am not in Malaysia at the moment. Given a choice, I would be there from the preliiminary rounds. :)

Hi HongHong,
Sad to hear that your favourite player is not coming. However, I hope you won't be too sad as there will be others worth watching as well. I too felt like that when most of my fav players failed to turn up in one of the All England edition, but it ended up as enjoyable as the rest of the editions.
Since you are going to KL already, you might as well watch the quarters and the semis. If the finals does not suit you, you can opt to head back to Singapore and be home earlier.
You might as well make the best of the situation. Cheer up. :)

I think the best rounds in any tournament would have to be the quarters or semis HongHong.
Whilst in KLBA Hall Cheras, stop by the sports shop
and check out on display an authentic wooden Dunlop
Maxply racquet used by P Gunalan in the 1969 All
England.

I think the best rounds in any tournament would have to be the quarters or semis HongHong. I'd say the semifinals, where it's only one step away from a chance to become the champion. Same in football - the English FA Cup, it's most hotly and well contested the most during the semis. Some of the very best matches are semifinal matches.
I wonder why does the excitement of the finals doesn't seem to match that of the semis? Both semis and finals are equally or more exciting in team events, such as TC/UC for example, but less so in individual events.

If you miss them at the Federal hotel, you can always find them at night at Jalan Alor when they go for their supper. This is where you can find them in a big group and when they are not in a hurry to rush off-ideal for autographs and, yes, questions on anything. If you speak mandarin, you should have no problem.

Jalan Alor is just across the Federal hotel. It is parallel to Jalan Bukit Bintang, where the Federal hotel is located. Jalan Alor is a very popular hawkers eating place and is open only at night. I know they will be there because they were there every night when they were last in KL, staying at the Federal, for the recent Thomas cup qualifying round in Feb. All the Chinese players speak mandarin.
Thanks but that's the draw and not the results !

You don't find players from south Asia eating at Jalan Alor. However, you might find Taiwan and Thai players there, especially the famous Thai doubles pair with an oldish looking player (but what a superb player). The Taiwanese also speak mandarin and also hokkien. The Thais speak only Thai.

You mean Pramote Terawiwatana (the oldish) and Tesana Panvisas?
To locals, Jalan Alor would be famous for char koey teow and also something which is quite illegal in the eyes of the law... ;)
