View Full Version : Role of Coaches
This is not meant to be an emotive issue.
What is the coaching system in various countries?
I'm familiar with the system of various levels of coaching, ie.
different age groups of national players are asssigned different
coaches of different capabilities and achievements.Would it
be a better system for a player to have a choice who he wants
to have as coach, maybe the same coach from cradle to grave
for reasons of emotional attachment, is it good for the player?
Maybe to exagerate ( how do you spell that) would you insist
that your kindergarten teacher mentors you all the way to
college.
Remember, this is not an emotive issue, just view it objectively.
not sure, but here is another piece of news, Army Officers are brought into the Malaysian team to motivate the players. i hope BAM is just trying to be creative there.
What is the role of National Organisations.Should they be run
machine like as army with ranks and committees of experts
overseeing development, discipline etc?
Should they instead be run by a Motley Crew of precocious
talents like the Wild Bunch or Kelley's heroes to do their own
thing. Will talent alone bring success, are we talking about
rock stars?
What type of framework has proved most successful? What
type of organisations will revive badminton in N America?
Answers appreciated (ie rational ones)

Should we look at a system such as Denmark who have a smaller population but able to produce top players?
I'm always a little skeptical about having just one coach. Sometimes a different opinion can produce further insight but it's important to realise that everybody has a slightly different way of doing things.

This reminds me of an article I read on www.chinabadminton.com. In there, some high-level badminton official/coach/whatever who declined to be named (why do I suspect Li Mao?) was bashing the Chinese system of coaching MS players, saying that it merely implemented a standard formula on all players, regardless of their playing style and needs. Birdbrain mentioned in another posting abt Sun Jun's injury being caused by Tang Xianhu (standard guoyu pinyin)'s training methods and this was reiterated in there.
Not meant as a personal attack on Mr. Tang.

What is Coach Tang thought by you guys?
I know he was working for Indonesia before. Both men's single coaches, who's better? Tang or the current Malaysian single coach or Indonesian Mulyo ?
Put it simple, who is the best coach for men's single?
to all fairness, we should put Li Mao into the basket as well. Li pretty much single handedly revived Korea's Men's single. he went there for a year or two and see how much more news we are seeing on the Korean players.
I heard the Korean coaches were so impressed by his training methods, they tried learning Mandarin so they could pick up a thing or two from him. And from the interviews I read, Li Mao seems to think very highly of Shon Seung Mo, picking him to go even further than HI Lee.
For the excellent results of the the INA men's players in the early to mid 90s and the recent results of the Chinese players in the Olympics, who can doubt Tong's ability as a coach. Having said that, I read an aritcle many years ago reporting that Tong's way of training was extremely intensive and harsh, to such an extent that one of his proteges during his early coaching years in China (i.e. before his return to Indonesia) became nervous breakdown. I think grieveances of Sun Jun, and no doubt Dong Jiong, are not unfounded. It is also true that such intensive training does not necessarily suit every player. Therefore, different methods should be tailormade for different players. Unfortunate, the Chinese way of management of the national team is highly centralized so that other ways of training cannot be allowed. I believe that Li Mao is a good coach, as he brought the Chinese men's players to the top level again after the doldrums in early to mid 90s. Li Mao may perhaps consider operating a badminton training school of his own, just like Wu Wenkai and Zhao Jianhua in the Guanzi Province.
Isn't Zhao at present a share trader in Singapore and part time
National coach?Where is this Wu, last time round he was a
club player in Penang, then club coach in Kl then diappeared
1 year ago.
Q1. I think it should be run a bit like a decentralised Government.(sounds like I am reading this out of my History text)
Q2.Talent alone is not enough, u need mental strength too. If u can't win many hard matches in a row, what's the use of ur talent???(Damn, my answers seem to be Questions lately, even 4 my English exam today)
Q3.dunno abt this one.
P.S. R my answers considered rational?????
Just read an interview with Sun Jun on the chinabadminton site. Again, an article on how his injury was caused by over-intensive training and a bit on his future prospects. He says he may want to be a coach. According to the reporter, he was limping to the interview and had a huge swelling on his right ankle - an aftermath of the injury that had been plaguing him for the whole of last year. He said something like, "How different am I from a cripple now?"
Poor thing.
And welcome back, May!

Thought Zhao was doing insurance, but then a badminton background doesn;t seem quite suited for selling insurance.
Maybe Cheung, but he may do well to avoid insurance.
As a player he was mostly taking the wrong risks and not
weighing probabilities well, probably perform below average in
statistics.Just joking he was a great player, forced to play too
many tours.and always willing to please his supporters.

Hi Bbn,
Are you sure your name is right? Your questions are really tough to answer. There is not an absolute answer but I do believe that the coach direction should be towards the athlete's objective. My opinion is that different skill level different skill coaches; different age group also different coaching methodologies; different cultures, different attitudes .
In Canada, if you coach kids in a Community Center it would be certain that you cannot use methodologies used in China, Indonesia or Korea. An example is gymnastics in Australia where the parents are not allowed to watch the kids practice. The kids were supposed to be trained to attain international level so Australia employed Chinese coaches. The parents were shocked when they knew the exercises their kids were doing and complained bitterly.
Probably the best bet is the coach trying not to make mistakes in the athlete development phase. He should be able to encourage, instill the insterest in the sport and have the young athlete ready for high level competition if he wishes to pursue it as a career.
I read an aritcle in Chinabadminton several months ago reporting that Wu Wenkai had started a badminton training school in Guangxi Province in the names of himself and Zhao Jianhua who is his brother-in-law (Zhao married Wen's little sister). Presumably, Wen is mainly responsible for the school while Zhao is in Singapore.
