View Full Version : 2004 World Junior Tournament...
Kelvin 04-12-2004, 09:40 PM Hi folks,
I have just been talking to a few people, and apparently the world junior tournament is going to be held in Canada once again?
Does anyone here have any info, or know of where exactly it is going to be held? as I would love to get to see the event, to check out any of the worlds newest up and comers.
Does anyone know of any particular players from any countries, to keep a watchful eye out for?
Thanks for your input.
-Kelvin

SmashingBird 04-14-2004, 01:48 PM WWC, keep me updated with your volunteering work, I also want to get a free pass to watch some of the World's Best play.
Kelvin 04-16-2004, 04:25 PM Thanks for your replies guys.
I've been asked by some people to attend the World Juniors to watch, but I felt kind of embarrassed to ask where they were being held :p
In any event I'm looking forward to booking some time off to be able to check out all the action!!
Take care, and I hope to see some of you there.

Will anyone know what the Minoru Arena is like? Is it like a stadium with air conditioning? Good luck to all our Canadian Juniors that'll be competing there! Go Canada Go!

Mironu arena is simply 3 community hockey rinks. It isn't anything special.. in fact, I find it underwhelming. I don't remember Minoru being airconditioned (although maybe that's because they didn't want to turn it on for rollerhockey).

JRMTL 07-23-2004, 04:40 AM Man, that would be awesome to visit Vancouver and watch the best junior players... But, work and coaching are tough to leave; especially coaching when it is the begining of the tournament's schedule...
Well, keep us posted and I hope you'll have a blast out there! We don't often have the opportunity to receive the best players in the world. And perhaps a future WC or Olympic champion!

WWC: What do they mean by 4 seats for $500? Do they mean 4 tickets for $500? That means $125 per person, but it comes in four? Thanks in advance!

Oh, how do you know that you will be a line judge? Have they (Badminton BC) informed you of what you would be doing? All I got was an email to meet this coming Sunday.
The trick to line judging is to remember to keep your eyes on the line (and not follow the shuttle to the line). You have to call it out regardless of how far out the shuttle landed. Good luck!

Okay will see u there then. I think BTC2004 is also gonna be there (at least from the list of receipents of the email).
604badder 10-17-2004, 09:41 PM Just got my orientation tonight. This is gonna be great! There are seven courts in the arena, and the setup consists of Yonex mats placed straight on the concrete surface of the ice rink (melted). The lights are directly over the middle T for some of the courts though, so I wonder if some of the players may complain. I'll post some pictures after my first shift next week. :D

Winex West Can 10-18-2004, 11:55 PM Definitely will try and post some pics as the event progress but boy, the orientation session on Sunday was so messy. The committee chair was so paranoia that he wouldn't let anyone help in distributing out the shirts and the accreditation passes that it took just forever to get. There was what, a hundred plus folks there.
I'm in Security (what a joke! :D) and apparently so is BTC2004. Where are you at, 604badder?
They are still looking for line judges but mainly to cover the morning and afternoon sessions during the weekdays.

From downtown, you will take the 98B line bus to Richmond from Burrard Stn and get off when it ends at Richmond Centre (you will see Richmond Centre Mall which on the West) and you need to get behind that mall to the Richmond Cultural Centre (the Arena is just next to it). So, basically, walk through the mall (enter on Sears and exit out Coast Mountain Sports) and walk across Minoru Blvd to the RCC.
604badder 10-19-2004, 09:55 PM This Saturday afternoon? Well I'll be there working in the hospitality lounge, so perhaps I'll see you around. You won't be able to come in, but if I see a lost soul peeking in the window, I'll be sure to come on and say hi :)

A lot of the VRC group of BF members will be playing this Saturday night as usual. You're welcome to join us Watson, especially as you've yet to see the club(?). Perhaps you can get one of us to sign you in! I'm might be at the World Jrs. this Saturday too, but won't know if I can play that night until later towards the weekend.

timeless 10-20-2004, 02:47 AM Tonight I heard from some friends that teams China, Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia have all been practising at ClearOne Badminton Centre in Richmond! Anyone who's been there for training earlier this week would have gotten a chance to watch them practise. My friends have all gotten a chance to watch the different teams practise and they are all amazed to say the least. "They ALL smash harder than anyone I've ever seen" (including our own national players), said one friend *LOL*. :D
CanuckBur 10-20-2004, 03:05 AM Hi,
This January, my home was only half a block away from the arena. Now, I have to take a bus to go there. I was busy study for the whole year so I didn't realize the world cup is here. Now, it is too late for me to volunteer for it.
Winex gave a direction to get to the place. There is an alternated transit path. If you are living close to a skytrain station, you can go to the 22nd skytrain station to catch the #410 bus. #410 bus takes you directly to Richmond and also in front of it!!
When the #410 bus pass the Richmond Mall, tell the bus driver that you want to go to the Brighouse library at Minoru Blvd. There is a bus stop in front of the library where you can get off (the library has a tiny park in front of it so you still have to walk to it.) The arena is next to the Brighouse library. The sport facilities, parking lots, and the library are in the same place.
I am going to buy a ticket for Friday (China vs Malaysia, Japan vs Korea) tomorrow (Oct 20th). Hope to see you on the game days.
From,
Ted.
cappy75 10-20-2004, 03:38 AM Hey Watson,

timeless 10-20-2004, 05:23 AM Oh I forgot to mention, Yoo Yong Sung and Lee Dong Soo are also here as part of Team Korea. And Chen Qi Qiu (spelling?) is here as part of Team China. Apparently the Chinese team hasn't brought too many coaches or trainers, while the Korean team has at least five or so. At least that's what my friend noticed at ClearOne.

panhandle 10-21-2004, 10:36 PM Tourney was good today!! Great boys doubles....fast action. The boys single player from China anhilated his two opponents. Funny to hear the asian players grunt like monkeys before every rally!! Lots of players slipping as condensation is coming from ice.
I would like to play badminton if anyone is planning....after all, watching it for 10 days and not playing is going to be painful.
Anyone know where I could play until the 29th?

Panhandle,
You should be able to play at the VRC with the rest of VRC-BF'ers and of course, Sunday at Collingwood and at Anderson (in the evening) where I will be playing. Anderson also has Tues/Thurs sessions and runs from 6:30pm to almost 10pm. I believe the VRC-BF'ers also play on Wed.
I will hopefully see you tomorrow evening at the event and probably on Sat/Sun since I'm scheduled to be on.

CAD / USA are in the bottom bracket. i was expecting NED to do well.
CanuckBur 10-23-2004, 03:30 AM Hi,
The games were very exciting. Malaysia's boys double was beaten by China's pair. But, the Malaysian pair won the second game after their disastrous first game. They put up a good fight but lost to China (I think it was something like 15-10). Both teams showed some extraordinary moves on second and third game. The crowd gave loud applauses to both teams (we happened to sit among the Malaysian fans). Malaysia Tourism gave out some hats and little flags to the supporters. Some fans shouted, "Malaysia, Boleh!" But, we were not as noisy as the Indonesian team. China eventually won by 5-0. Malaysia's girl single was no match to China's. It was over in a blink.
The girl single between Indonesia and Denmark was also very exciting. Here, the indonesian voice of support and drum(empty shuttlecock container) were deafening after they found themselves in a situation of 2-1 against Denmark. They played 3 games. Indonesia won the first game. Then, Denmark won the second by a close margin(I think it is 17-16, but Indonesia tied it at 12-12 after falling behind Denmark by 8 points. And then further advanced it to 13-12. From this point on, quite a few switches had happened before Denmark won it). In early third game, it appeared that Denmark found a way to block the two short Indonesian girls' smashings by standing closer to the net. But, after a few mistakes, the indonesian girls got out of the difficult situation by mixing their smashings and clearing (to the back of the court). Also, they made very good drops, especially the girl named Polli. The final score was around 15-10.
The boy single (Denmark vs Indonesia) showed a little problem on a court. The Denmark player found himself stepped on uneven surface after a small carpet wrinkle built up under the back of the court.
The court next to their games were played by Sweden and Russia. It was 2-1 (Russia lead) so they have to play boys double. The Russians were around 6'5" to 6'9" tall. Their third game tied at 14-14. Then, Russian won it by 2 points.
Korea beat Japan and Hong Kong (2 tall Koreans did damaging smashes -- boys double). Hong Kong boys double lost confidence in their first game against the Korean pair (15-1 or 0, I forgot). They were able to block some of the smashes at their second game. Their smashes were ineffective against the Koreans in the first game, but they got through the Korean's defence at the second game. They lost the second game but at least they tried.
At the second halve, Singapore lost to India (3-0), Japan lost to Korea (3-0).
The person sat next to me told me that she was hoping that CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company; national tv) would cover the finals. No TV crew were there. Personally, I found advertisements about the event was lacking. This is one of the reasons that not many people knew an international game was held in Richmond. My friend lived half a block away from it and she didn't know it too (to be fair, she doesn't play badminton). On the other hand, I was happy because three of us were able to sit on the front row seats to watch the games :D. I stayed from 9:30 am - 11:10am, then from 1pm to 10:10pm to watch the last games in the day.

timeless 10-23-2004, 03:01 PM The net is to catch all the shuttles that go astray from the players defending all the nuclear smashes! Heheheh :p
Minoru Arena is an ice rink. The net is there to catch all the hockey pucks that deflect upwards, and protect the spectators from them.

Winex West Can 10-23-2004, 07:29 PM Well, it was fun today working the security detail. There are two stringers available to do stringing with two helpers. Jennifer Lee is one of the two stringer and they were both using desktop flying clamps machines (6 points with crank). I was watching them string and the tension is only around 24-26 lbs for this particular Taiwanese player.
Good games all around. Hong Kong vs India was very good with long matches and basically going down to the wire with HK finally pervailing. They started at 9:30 and didn't finish until 3-ish pm.
Korea vs Taiwan was another good match-up and ditto for Denmark vs Malaysia.
Pete LSD 10-23-2004, 07:59 PM That confirms Asia as the best place in terms of high-quality baddy training. :D Horrraaayyyyy for HK :)

The net is to catch all the shuttles that go astray from the players defending all the nuclear smashes! Heheheh :p
Minoru Arena is an ice rink. The net is there to catch all the hockey pucks that deflect upwards, and protect the spectators from them.
Ic ic , never thought of that.. i was guessing that section is for those who are prone to mosquito bite.. so they put up mosquito net. Ahhaha...
Most likely China will have a clean sweep...
bighook 10-23-2004, 10:10 PM Some good matches today and it was a good show of how the different the styles and proficiency of technique make in this game. The Chinese displayed overwhelming superiority in fitness and technique. The Koreans were also quite impressive with short efficient strokes and a patience for waiting for the right opportunity to come. The last match of the day in the Mens Doubles between Korea and Taipei was a bit of a nail biter as a 2 to 2 tie decider match . The Koreans after winning the first game started to mentally fall apart in the second and suddenly after an 8 to 2 lead were down 13 to 9 and it looked like a rubber game was in the cards.Suddenly the Koreans clawed back to get to 14 to 13 and looked to win it.All credit to Taipei as they won a long hard smashing rally where the Koreans looked to end it and won serve to tie it up at 14 all.Korea dug in deep and finally pulled away with Taipei making errors in the end to give way to the win.Very entertaining match as the crowd seemed to lift the Taipei pair to play with lots of emotion. The match with Chen Jin of China was a display of the difference in speed and worldclass experience makes. All credit to the Indonesian who put up a good fight but Chen Jin showed why he is with the national squad.Chen seemed to be everywhere and just when it seemed that the Indonesian had hit a winning shot he would blaze in with speed and hit a seemingly routine winning return. The hardest part part for the Indonesian must have been that it seemed like Chen had just been barely pushed and the way he carried himself between rallies showed it.The psychology of it seemed evident.I was amazed at the difference in the sound of the strokes as the players from the dominant countries seemed to have that crisp effortless snap to them and how the sound changed when the lower standard countries battled.Makes one realize just how far one would have to go play with the big boys or some of these ladies.I look forward to seeing the individual event championships begin as we will see even more of the hidden talent from those not lucky enough to play the team event.I apologize for only naming Chen Jin but with no program and with only team shirts visible I can't say with certainty who the other players were.No offence intended toward anybody anywhere.Just happy to have seen it.
taneepak 10-23-2004, 11:07 PM Well, it was fun today working the security detail. There are two stringers available to do stringing with two helpers. Jennifer Lee is one of the two stringer and they were both using desktop flying clamps machines (6 points with crank). I was watching them string and the tension is only around 24-26 lbs for this particular Taiwanese player.
I think they are using Extree portable stringing machines. I used to have this machine. It is easy to assemble and then take it apart. It does a pretty good job considering its low mass. Yes, it can string 30lb+ tension with no problem because of the 4 v-shaped side supports.
I think Taiwan suprised everybody with their surprisingly good results. Taking the 2nd seeds to a full 5 sets is certainly an exceptional feat for them! They certainly have bronze in their sights!!
But the final affair tomorrow is going to be the most interesting one! Let's see if Korea can at least stop the Chinese from completely sweeping all their matches in this team tourney, with 0 losses.
And, please folks who attended the recent matches: Post some more photos!!!!! :D :D
in the Asian Junior championship, the only match that China drop was the MD against Korea. too bad that the MD game between Korea and Taiwan wasn't played today as the match ended 3-1, there isn't a way to weigh their strengths.
CanuckBur 10-24-2004, 02:32 AM Thanks for the story, BigHook. I wish I was there to watch Saturday's semi-final games, but I had to work today. When I was home at 7:30pm, I wanted to know who won (esp. China vs Indonesia), but I knew that the games hadn't finished yet. Tomorrow, I may go to watch the final. Yes, you are right. A live game can tell you more things than a recorded video.
One of the reasons why there were not many photographs is because most of the audience didn't take pictures at the event. An elderly person who sat beside me also expressed that he didn't want to bring a camera here. But, there were camcorders setup at the top of the stand. I guess it is better than bringing a camera. A competitor from (China, Singapore, Taipei?) was checking her camcorder at the top of the stand (w/ tri-stand). She had red-pants. I wonder which country she came from.
604badder took a picture showing the indonesian team. The girl at the bottom right hand corner is "Polli," who helped the indonesian team to defeat Denmark. Wait a minute, is that China vs Indonesia picture (on third court)? Yeah, it looks like it. (the one showing China: 2, INA: 0).

The korea and taipei MD was definitely the highlite of the day as it was the last match and the whole stadium was just watching that match..those guys had incridible reflexes esp the koreans; blocking almost every smash but i never knew what the score was during the entire game.
timeless 10-24-2004, 07:50 PM Hmmm... Korea did play Taipei in MD though. Or am I misunderstanding?

timeless 10-24-2004, 07:56 PM Just got word from a friend.
China won the team event 3-0 vs Korea. Total Chinese dominance in the team competition this tournament. They didn't lose a single match.
I think the order of disciplines was XD, WS, and MS. No MD or WD. Does anyone know who, and how they choose the order?
My friend said China simply over powered Korea. He also mentioned that the Korean WS player was making a lot of unforced errors today, and he felt if she was "on" that she could have won. Also, the Korean MS player got all of his opponents shots, but he was too defensive, while the Chinese MS is totally aggressive. And we all know who usually comes out on top in that kind of scenario.
timeless 10-24-2004, 08:52 PM Here are some of my observations and thoughts of the tournament so far...
Consistency, or rather inconsistency. It seems that at the junior stage, consistency alone can get you quite far. I personally think the number of unforced errors is very high. Many of the kids out there are very talented. Definite flashes of brilliance in every match from many of them, but then it's followed by a string of unforced errors. For the very consistent teams of China and Korea, a lot of the time they just simply had to get the shuttle over and wait for an unforced error. I'm betting this is due to the difference in training programs and professionalism of the athletes. I know for sure the Chinese and Korean players are paid professionals, and pretty much lead the life of full-blown professionals. I'm not sure about the other countries, but my guess is they don't. I thought a perfect example of this was team MS Malaysia vs China. The Chinese MS had never been made to run so much than during this match. He almost always had to lift at the net, and had to run every corner like mad. The Malaysian MS player was totally brilliant at times, but then would make the simpliest unforced errors over and over. It eventually cost him the match, regardless of how close the score was. The same went with the Malaysian MD vs China. China and Korea rarely make unforced errors. Also, my friends all noticed that both China and Korea looked very professional when they practised. They had their routines down to a science and were very disciplined in how they carried everything out. They noted that the other teams seemed to fool around a lot.
...more later! ;)
libra 10-24-2004, 08:53 PM My question is, does Malaysia not take the team event seriously?
Why isn't Azhanif Azhar playing mens singles?
Resting top mens doubles player and putting a singles player in his place?
Granted they won the tie eventually but it's just strange that they aren't putting their strongest line up for important ties
gossip_lover 10-24-2004, 10:54 PM OMG....i just spent the entire day watchin the team finals today and it's somethin i'll never forget!!!....it was my first live international badminton competion and it was simply awesome!!!!!.....the atmosphere was great and just unbelievable....im sooo happy coz i got china's singles players and lee dong soo's autograph and i even shook hands with the men single player (chen jing)...we had a small chat and he was really shy..CHINA WAS AMAZING ESPECIALLY CHEN JING.....unbelievable...i cant believe i still have to go to school after tonite..its gonna be sooo DULL....but i cant wait to go back to the arena on friday and saturday to watch the individual's final..and this time i'll be sure to bring a camera!!!!!!
what did you and Chen Jin talk about? you guys spoke Chinese i assume?
gossip_lover 10-24-2004, 11:45 PM yea....we spoke a little mandarin and english.....we just congratulated him on how well he played and asked him where he is from in china....it was a really short conversation coz his bus had to leave:(
viver 10-25-2004, 01:49 AM The finals lady singles between Korea and China could probably be a closer match. From what I saw, the Chinese (did not remember her name) lady player is stronger physically and technically. In the first game, the Chinese player led 9-3, if not mistaken when she decided to change her game. Instead of pressuring her opponent, for some reason she started to ease a bit. The Korean player (last name is Jang) plays really well when she is not kept under pressure. She moved the Chinese player around with good placements and was able to catch up 9-9. Unfortunatelly she could not keep the tempo and lost the deuce.
In the second game, the Chinese player did not make the same mistake. She attacked with her flat clears and smashes keeping the Korean lady under pressure. Don't think she was strong enough to return these shots. On the other hand when the Korean player tried the same - have to say the Korean girl attacking clears were better placed, but the Chinese player was able to return them. The Chinese player won the second game 11-3 (?).
Overall it was a good match. I don't know if the Korean player could have won today even if she did not commit some unforced errors. But I do believe the Korean lady have a lot of potential. She is intelligent, has very good technique, fast but don't think her legs were strong enough. She is still young and not fully matured, we should still see a lot of her.
timeless 10-25-2004, 03:22 AM I see! What about the mixed doubles? How did that one play out?
wood_22_chuck 10-25-2004, 02:34 PM I see! What about the mixed doubles? How did that one play out?
A total white-wash. The CHN lady player totally dominated, reading the game extremely well, and you could see her moving forward when the KOR man-player (?) stretched out for a shot, and totally killing EVERY drop attempt. It's either lift or die.
The CHN man-player was powerfully explosive, and covered the court very well.
Kudos the the KOR male-player with excellent defense and reaction. The KOR female-player was too weak physically to match CHNs, and made quite a few unforced errors, which just snowballed at the end of the 2nd game. Lost three point hitting just below the tape, hit-racket frame etc.
Quite exciting to watch CHN in action though. They looked physically fit, moved well, made very few errors. They played like seasoned adults, while the KOR team really played like youths. The difference is quite marked.

Here's a preview of some shots I took:
CanuckBur 10-25-2004, 03:34 PM For their height, they still JUMP SMASH:eek: No where to go but down:rolleyes:. Our Canadian boys got done in against them cuz they lift too much:crying:.
I did find the Canadian players lifted their shuttlecocks quite low compared to China, Indonesian, and Korea (about 2/3 height). May be our Canadian players developed the habit from playing in our run-down, bad-lighting, low ceiling, community centres  .
Here is a little patchup for last Friday's team game. During the first game when Hong Kong players played against Korea's, they weren't played like a team, more like each of them tried to get to the shuttlecock. At one point, their racquet collided and the other Hong Kong player's racquet was damaged to a point that the racquet face was twisted. There was another issue that they didn't do well. When the Koreans were leaning forward like they were going to attack all the time, the Hong Kong players were timid of serving it to the Korean players' body. So, when they lifted it high, the Koreans killed it in one or two smashes. The Koreans were very well coordinated. On the second set, the HK players started to serve toward the Korean players then we started to see the Koreans were forced by the returns and had to move around. The Koreans won by good discipline, good smashes, and good team play. HK players did play like a team, lost their timidity, and played better at the second game.
Indonesia vs Denmark game was very interesting. The indonesian girls demonstrated that with skills and strategy, shorter people can still win over taller people. Initially, Denmark's smashes were effective against Indonesia. But, at the third game of the girl double, Indonesia simply deflected the shots to the opposite corner near the net. They didn't always lift it high for the Denmark players. This certainly took the Denmark players by surprise. Both teams' stamina were very impressive. They were still running around at the third game and did many good shots.
:crying: I only had one day from last week to watch the event so I totallly missed the semi and final games. Same thing for this week too, only for Thursady's quarter final. Anyone knows when is Thursday's game started? Is it 4pm?
timeless 10-25-2004, 06:50 PM Interesting... in those mixed doubles photos of the final, the chinese girl doesn't look like the girl I saw on Friday and Saturday. I could have sworn the girl I saw on those days had very short hair and was quite short in height as well.
FlamingSmash 10-25-2004, 11:29 PM WOW!! I didnt expect so many players would talk to me at the Jr world tournament!! I spoke to most of different players such as the taipei , malaysian , chinese, korean etc teams. The funniest thing that happend to me was when i was having a break my linesman shift. I was gonna walk down the bleachers when I saw yoo yung sung walk by  . I sorta made this sound with my throat cuz i was TOO SURPRISED HE WAS THERE !!! SO i made this gurgling sound and pointed at him lol HAHAHA.... he then looked up at me and stared for a second and continued walking... hahaha but anyways .. i ended up printing a pic of yoo yung sung and lee dong soo on my computer and getting them to sign it. (somthing else funny occured at the time but i'll talk abt it next time :D ) Also, i got the malaysian single's player's email and Chen jin's pic plus autograph.. I noe this may sound common but THIS STUFF IS CRAZYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
badminton owns...
payce!
viver 10-26-2004, 12:43 AM The Chinese girl really dominated the net. Not only she anticipated so well the shots to the net, she also intercepted soft and hard shots efficiently. Agree totally with you that the girl played beyond what her age (apparently) suggest. Probably a name to watch in the future.
Wood_22_chuck, from the angle your pictures, me might have been sitting close on watching the game. Too bad I did not see you.

I think the lack of response is because the aswer is no ;) .
While our friends in Canada are enjoying the proceedings live at the arena, I am watching the live scores in the office and was thrilled to note that our Malaysian youngster, Chong Wei Feng, had just beaten Korean Hong Ji Hoon 15-14, 15-10 in the MS. At least we see one Malaysian entering the QF in a sea of red posed by the danagerous Chinese, especially their No. 1, Chen Ji.
But there is a TIME difference. This is Singapore TODAY, Oct 28 at 11.30 am in my office and the match I talked about was played YESTERDAY, Oct 27 at about 8 pm in Vancouver, Canada. Yet we are witnessing the same thing as if on the same day and time, divided only by geography!
When Canada sleeps in a few hours' time, Singapore will still be pretty wide awake and active in daylight afternoon, although there was a little rain this early morning and the sky is cloudy.
Even as I end this message, I could see the Indonesian WD pair of Greysia Polli/Heni Budiman just winning over the English pair of Heather Oliver and Jennifer Wallwork, 15-5, 15-10.
There is no live TV coverage here but the live scores, courtesy of the internet, at least give us an insight, despite the great distances that separate us. :)

Good for women's badminton. Could Cheng be Mia and Camilla's successor to challenge the Chinese women's great wall?
^^ LOL, actually u could say 4 teams if u count Macao!
But, this victory is definitely an upset and the Chinese Squad are surely shaking their heads wondering how 4 WS in quarters still didn't secure the victory. But then again, at the Junior level, international experience is definitely a huge factor, except in the case of pure natural talents like Chen Jin (who were still able to win gold at age 16). Also, this year, because he played in minor internationals, he was able to thrash everybody in his way, except till he faced his equally-experienced comrade in the final.
604badder 10-30-2004, 06:55 PM Wow, the MS final betwen Chen and Gong looked like it was an all-out battle. But the reigning champion finally sealed victory in the 3rd set 17-14! Hehe, these 2 will become the Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai when Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai become the Xia Xuanze and Chen Hong.... LOL
anybody who saw this please give a report!! :D
This was a spectacular match! Chen was consistently able to dive to the sides to dig out Gong's smashes, and then control it to within an inch or two of the tape as a drop or cross court drop. Just INCREDIBLE!!! This was one match I thank the powers that be for letting me do the brooms. :)
Gong was given a yellow card for constantly delay and stalling for time. Little things like adjusting his shoe laces, taking a slow lap around, etc.
A interesting thing, these guys don't sweat much. Even though Chen fell on the court many times, and I had the fortune of doing the mopping, there was really hardly a drop on the ground. (Stall tactic perhaps). The chinese XD team on the other hand, boy it was like a shower. They were dripping sweat all over the place, but funny enough didn't ask for mopping. Go figure.
viver 10-30-2004, 07:59 PM The Men singles was really an excellent match. Did not expect this game going like this since both finalists were Chinese. Chen Jin today did not play the way he used to show or Gong Wei Jie did not allow him to. Gong played really well today - excellent net control, deceptive clears/drops and lethal cross court smashes. He had Chen Jin running after the shuttle for many periods of time, often using attacking clears to CJ forehand and following with cross courts smashes to the backhand side. GWJ was also efficient at the net using tight net shots forcing CJ to lift.
In the second set, it appeared that GWJ was starting to get tired. He tried to ask to towelling a few times but always refused by the umpire. He was not able to place the shuttle like in the first game and lost. At the start of 3rd game, CJ tried to impose a faster pace but still it was GWJ who was able to control the game. CJ then played longer rallies, clearing a bit higher, lifting high and deep since he did not have a clear advantage in any department. His experience and fitness prevailed as at the end GWJ missed a few crucial cross court smashes.
It was really a very good game, a high level game that is rarely seen here. I have a feeling that GWJ is technically better and should here about this guy more often in the future.
Winex West Can 10-30-2004, 08:07 PM Rumour has it that the MS was to go three games to put on a good show. :D
It was a great match and the last game could have gone either way.
The MD was very good and in fact, the crowd were pretty quiet until the WS (3rd match of the day) as the first two (WD and MS) were contested between the Chinese players. After that, you get one section rooting for China (Chung Gok Chai Yu" and the other would come back with "Taiwan Chai Yu" :D :D
Cheng (Taiwan) played really well and managed to move the taller Lu (5' 10") around the court to force errors and weak replies. All in all, a very good day of great badminton and spectators.
Except we got volunteers (off duty) trying to sneak onto the VIP area (floor seating)!
Oh yeah, after Malaysia (Tan/Hoon) won the MD, they were hounded by the teenage girls for autographs :D
Winex West Can 10-30-2004, 08:28 PM Oh yeah, before I forget.
I spoke to Lindsey Bell and asked her how she likes Vancouver and if she gets the time, she should do a write up for Badminton Central.
She's actually staying until Tuesday to do some sightseeing before heading home and no, she politely turned me down on the write-up request citing that she doesn't have a lot of free time.

Don't know about the 3 game thing . Today just felt CJ did not play up to his standard. His smashes were not sharp - the sound was not as crisp as GWJ's which to me was a surprise. He tried to step up the pace but apparently was not successful. Don't know what went wrong with CJ, but was impressed with what GWJ was able to do.

The Chinese Junior team will be playing exhibition matches (against the Canadian Junior team and spectators) at the VRC tomorrow from 1pm until 4pm.
^^

Alex Pang vs Chen Jin!!

More demoralizing would be having the Canadian national team against these juniors.
The Korean kids that sweeped last year's Canadian open were here for the Junior World Championships. Unfortunatelly for them in this tournament they did not get any gold medal. The MD event was the closest one for them.

Look at it this way, even the Taipei team probably could whip our adult National team. I mean Cheng Shao-Chieh is ranked number #19 in the world and she's only 19 yrs old.

gossip_lover 10-31-2004, 12:24 AM While i was watching the ms match today...i seriously felt that i was having a heart attack!...the games were sooo close...and it was excellent to watch...i was going for chen jin (im a very big fan of his-so if u guys find any websites or new bout him, pls let me now :P)...but he didnt seem to play up to his normal standard...he also seemed to be injured...he dived a lot and his back/waist looked to me as if it was hurting...but gong also player very well.....but overall i think cheng jin is the better player...he seems a more 'well-rounded' player...and gong seems to be a 'power' player.....but im really curious as to why chen jin didnt play as well as before...perhaps it was the stress or in the earlier rounds..he played 'easier' players..and today he had to face his own comrade who is a very good player himself..anyways i got a lot of autographs and i took a lot of pictures with the china team (chen jin! and gong!)....im always looking forward to going to the vrc tmr to watch them also!:)

taneepak 10-31-2004, 12:53 AM Just as expected :) The Chinese Taipei girl CHENG Shao-Chieh has won the WS!!! She's SOOOOOOOO good!!! I feel so sorry for LU Lan and WANG Lin....one lost and one had to waive.:crying:
Cheng Shao Chieh is no novice. She is a seasoned player, having represented Chinese Taipeh in Uber Cup matches and fought great battles with top players at senior levels. Lu Lan and Wang Lin have never represented China at the Uber Cup level or senior level tournaments, but their turn will come as they have the talent.

timeless 10-31-2004, 04:35 AM The Korean kids at this tournament didn't get any golds at the Canadian Open two years ago either. The Korean kids that swept the gold medals back then were not present here. I wonder why too, because they were much stronger than the kids that competed here. Maybe the Koreans wanted these second stringers to get more experience while the first string moved on to the real national team.

You should be right as I did not remember their names. Surely the girl that won the singles title was not here. But the one that impressed me most was the Korean girl that played singles in the team finals. She was the youngest (14?) player at last year's Canadian open and was able to beat senior Canadian national players. The difference is  just amaaazing. I believe this girl should be one to watch in the future.
Also the Korean kids that played in the MD finals, one of them just 16 I believe. They should also be a pair to watch, their attitude and skills are just amazing. More good players coming up, it could only be good for badminton.

Sorry, I was not aware that WWC nominated a spokesperson :D . At least he did not mention it to me when I met him yesterday at the World Junior Championships.
We know the level of Canadian players and the difficulties local players encounter to improve their technique. It may not be as easy as in some Asian countries.
Cheng Shao Chieh is a very good player. She played very intelligently, is very fast and above everyone else (at least among the girls in the singles event) in terms of experience. Winning the World Junior Championships is not easy - is great for the promotion of the badminton in Taiwan and probably will help to get better support.
But will she find the same opponents in the senior circuit? At least the Chinese girls will not be there for a while as their seniors are still playing. Again my opinion only, the Chinese girls here have shown that they have better basic skills, but as for court intelligence (read experience) Cheng was well above them. It will be interesting to watch how they develop in the future.

timeless 10-31-2004, 08:02 PM Just to clarify for GossipLover, today an exhibition day was held at Vancouver Racquets Club (VRC) with Team China vs VRC. There were WS, MS, MD, and XD matches. Team China mostly fielded their youngest players, but they were still enough to wow the crowd. They even had their young singles players play doubles etc. *LOL*. Afterwards, anyone in the crowd was welcome to approach the chinese team for pictures or autographs, etc. I got a few myself ;). I forgot this fact, but the coach the jr. team is Zhang Ning's husband, so I got to meet him too. Pretty cool for Canadians who don't get this kind of exposure to international players. :)

CanuckBur 11-01-2004, 12:18 AM It was you who won the racquet? Gossip_Lover? There was only one prize for the tickets by the way. I heard there was t-shirt but they didn't give it. Congratulation. Yeah, I bought the tickets too but didn't win anything. The China team only use the Kason titanium 100. The racquets are really light. I was late for the show so I didn't see the WS and may be the MS events.
timeless 11-01-2004, 12:18 AM It wasn't my camera :o. But when I do, I'll try and post them... that is if "I" turn out okay in them hahahaha~! :o
Another thing I noticed... their Kason racquets are VERY light. Definitely on the lighter spectrum of the Yonex 3U equivalent. China's Kason sponsors were present with a booth to showcase all the entire Kason line, and every single one seemed even balanced, very light, and flexible! I'd would say their entire line ranged from very flexible to not-so-stiff. The most "stiff" still being more flexible than a Yonex Ti10. The Ti10 is the most flexible Yonex racquet I've ever used so I don't really know what to compare it with beyond that. Also, the entire Chinese team uses one model of Kason save one player, not including Chen Jin, which 604Badder reports uses a Yonex MP99(?).
604badder 11-01-2004, 12:33 AM .....Also, the entire Chinese team uses one model of Kason save one player, not including Chen Jin, which 604Badder reports uses a Yonex MP99(?).
That's affirmative :) He broke two strings during the final match, and he had them on top of his bag next to my chair. No mistaking, MP99 :)
panhandle 11-01-2004, 12:37 AM After the finals...I went out to a late lunch to Richmond Sushi with some friends at 5:30pm. Around 7pm, the Tiwanese team showed up for dinner and sat next to us in the special room. Funny thing was that we could see each other through the doorway and they recognized me for my ying/yang hair after being seen all week by them as a line judge. One of the other line judges was having dinner with them and I went to talk to him and asked if it was ok for pictures.
My friends were from Taiwan and he really wanted a picture of Cheng (girl's single champ) and it was ok. We all took pictures with her. Then he heard them say they wanted pictures of my hair style and couldn't take it because I was too tall. I had a feeling most people wanted to take my picture at the tourney, especially if the official photographer took a picture of me. So I bent down for them to take pictures....pretty much all of their players had cameras going and it was entertaining because they couldn't get the right angle and proper flash happening. My friend said I was going to be famous in Taiwan now...my picture will be up and talked about.
It could've been worse if I had the Yonex logo dyed on my hair...but I'm a Karakal/Domino rep!!
Side note...my friend said they are called Chinese Taipei because if they were called Taiwan in any competition, China would protest and have them thrown out. This is the only time they have ever won a gold medal in anything too!!
I will post the pics when my friends send them to me.
Cheng is very shy...she was wearing eye glasses, guess she wears contacts when she plays.
wwcbro 11-01-2004, 08:54 AM Was at the Finals and no one on the forum mentioned what is it like to sit for 4 hours on a hard bench! If I had known I could have bring along a really thick cushion.... :D
Here is my 2 bits spill on the Finals...
Finals started off with the LD, all China affair Tian Q/Yu Y vs Feng C/Pan P. Quite boring so it was a good thing it is the 1st match. Yu Y did a high jump smash whilst warming up. (that is the first time I seen a woman jumpsmash). That & I thought Pan P was the better player of them four. Good smash, flat drives but her partner seem very nervous.
MS, Thought that Gong WJ was going to run away with the match. 1st game was lot of jumpsmashes & hard x-court smashes. Chen practically was just defending and diving to retrive Gong x-courtsmashes. 2nd game started off Gong WJ doing the same but then making lots of mistakes. He requested to towel down a couple of times but was turned down by the umpire..Gong really ticked off the umpire. Bending down to fiddle his shoes so very often and taking his time to receive and eventually got a yellow card. 3rd game was the same, Chen J being very consistent, defending and more diving :D So overall, good defensive skills+consistency wins. Gong got a really good soft net play where the shuttle seem to just skim the net and tumble right over the tape. He did it a few times so it is no fluke.
LS, man... Taiwan's Cheng Shao Chieh is firecracker of a player. Her diminutive figure belied the speed & power of her strokes. Lu L dwarfed over her, it is like a David vs Goliath kinda of scene. Match was over pretty fast, Cheng simply was too fast, she was there for almost everyshot Lu makes. And she makes Lu works the baseline, pinning her to the back of the court and killing off with drops & x-drops. I think Cheng is the only one who did one dive. So footwork + anticipation + strong wrist strokes wins. Cheng strokes has very little follow-through, hers are the short snapped wrist kind that punch the shuttle.
MD, the only non-China match. Malaysia's Hoon Thien How kinda remind me of Chan Chong Ming. Medium height and a hard smasher ( you know he is when he broke his string smashing during the warmups :D ) 1st game completely dominated by the Malaysians and Tan Boon Heong hardly do any smashes and when he did, doesn't seem to have the same power like Hoon. But, still it is maybe like a gazillion times stronger than mine *LOL* 2nd game, the Korean began to find their footing and nerves. It was over pretty fast and I think it was during this game that Tan Boon Heong did a spectacular dive to the retrive a drop. :D But lost the point. The Koreans ran away with the 3rd game changing end 8-0 up. But the Malaysian battle back and Tan Boon Heong seem to wake up and become decidely more aggressive. Malaysia won but the Koreans are definitely a team to watch out for..
XD, I was about to go, sitting on a hard surface for 3 odd hours is not good for the soul...or butt. But, I bumped into Muhamad Rizal..of all places in the washroom! Spoke to him a bit. Yeah, friendly and says it is bloody cold in the courts. Thought the Indonesian could have taken the 1st game, Rizal did the most spectacular dive of the Finals. He dive to his backhand and rolled out of the court onto the Yonex billboard. Even his partner, Greysia Polli, did a mini dive at one stage. Mistakes and the Indonesian just seem to play their shots too tight when it comes to the clutch points. Game point and couldn't close the game. 2nd game was the same, I think China did not win; but the Indonesian lost the match, so many mistakes and unforced errors.
So with so many of the players diving all over the place, I think eventually diving will have to be incorporated into ones technique ( if it hasn't been done already!)
Anyways, met a couple of BF'ers, TTT, wood_22_chuck and WWC. speed78, where were you sitting? Is it in the $500 seats?? I was sitting next to the Chinese team but behind them.

Cheng's sponser Yonex asked China if she can train with Chinese team
before the World Championship and it seems that China wasn't willing because Cheng went into the quarterfinal in the Olympics and it may not happen now she won the women's single.
Cheng actually lost to Korea's Jun Eun Ha 11:6, 11:1 in this June's

mixed.
Cheng's dad is a badminton coach and she started holding the badminton

Judging from the feedback from some postings here, in words and in pictures, it would seem not a good idea to hold a tournament as big and as popular as the World Junior Championships in an ice rink.
Indeed an ice rink is not purpose-built for badminton and the glare from the wide glass windows shown in some of the pics certainly hurts and irritates the eye, although attempts to block as much of the glare in the form of big screens are evident. Proper lighting, good ventilation and safe floor conditions are vital to good badminton and the comfort of the spectators and officials must also be considered.
But I think to allow the ice to remain (so as to facilitate the hockey season) and to build the temporary timber flooring on it was unique in a weird sense. Ice can melt and the moisture that emanates from beneath can only become a tricky issue as it turned out. Moisture on the rubber mats can prove slippery and thus dangerous to the players, so were the uneven bumps on the mat surface caused again by the ice below.
And the experience of those players who hailed from the warmer climes of tropical Asia, the cold conditions in the arena could not have come at a worse time. Of course the enemy was the bulk of ice which lay constantly beneath them.
The Malaysians must have done exceedingly well in the MD inspite of such adverse conditions! ;)
cappy75 11-02-2004, 04:28 AM Er... that's not rude, that's just plain criminal. Maybe the girl should have gone with a friend... a bigger, fierce looking friend:mad:!

Actually, after they play exhibition at VRC, WANG Lin gave me a brand new team shirts of hers before she left for shopping at Metrotown, it's the neon green one they wear and with her name on its back. I was so surprised and follow with wild joy......Oh! What a lovely girl she is! Wish her great success!:)
