Badminto injuries can be caused by your opponent, your partner or by yourself.
If the shuttle is high over the net and your opponent rushes like an express train to whack the shuttle, please duck or just turn your back. Don't be a hero and risk an eye injury.
Never look behind you to see what your parner is gonna do with the shuttle. He may hit a cross-court drive right into your eye. I was hit several times but luckily at the back of my head.
A shuttle between partners always causes problems. A shout like "LET" or "YOURS" may help.
How many of you have accidentally hit yourself, usually on the fingers of the non-racket hand?

In the past, I have occasionally hit myself on the lips and cheeks after fending off drives to my face, on either knees when I jump smashed, and frequently on my fingers when I mis-timed my service shot:o.

Me too. Just in January this year, I smashed and nearly shaved off a small portion of my finger nail on my middle finger. It was bleeding like mad then...

Ugh... just the sound of it made me wince:eek:. I got so close to my partners' backswing so many times it's scary. I could actually feel the wind generated from their swing. Man, hope I won't get clipped by them cuz I have a feeling it's gonna be more painful than I could ever imagine. *knock on wood*

I hit my thumb of my non-racket hand really hard in a match because I was getting fatigued (it was at a tournament in the semis and our opponents had taken us to three games). It swelled up but I kept playing. That was about two weeks ago. It still hurts when I put a little pressure on it. I hope it's not fractured or anything. But as long as I have my racket hand healthy, I'm still practicing. :)
I've hit myself in a rather delicate area after a particularly bad follow through
Since then I have hit myself in the thigh with a follow through and the same as Cappy I have hit myself in the face after trying to reply to certain drives :(
As for Sheldons idea of gloves, I saw someone in the same competitionas me at the weekend wearing a Wilson golf glove on his racket hand, how odd!

And while your at it, hire body guards to jump in to block the shot whenever a birdie is about to hit you.

Last year in a badminton tournament, I broke a kid's glasses when I smashed it into him. He was pretty lucky. So I now, I try to smash down more so I wouldn't hurt anyone else.

I was ready to do this, when I saw what happend to Viver in Vancouver.
Now u know the real reason of my cramp:
1. Too scared...
2. Try to find an excuse to get away from deadly combo from Smashingbird and lil badrad... :D

Nah, just get them to beat the sh*t out of your partner if he messed up and accidentally 'assault' you with his racquet:D.

I think of all the preventable injuries... despite one of Dill's unfortunate incidents, getting hit in the eye is still the worst kind:(. I have mentioned in one of the threads about a guy losing sight in one of his eyes from his partner's shot. How about getting conked by flying racquets? Given the relative proximity of your partner, it's not impossible to sustain a concussion from his/her mis-swing:(. Not very pleasant.

Oh... on one occasion I was hit on the head by my partner's racket when he smashed, and on another occasion on the left shoulder, by another partner's racket when he smashed. Both my fault, I started off at the T and started inching backwards to cut off fast drives, and didn't realized I had reached the middle of the court. No concussions though.

Yeah, those right-dab-in-the-middle shots can be really tricky to return. That's why whenever I get those while at the net, I just take step forward and crouch down so that my partner would have better field of vision and room to go for it. Back players get better shot than the front ones, thus priority goes to them. Sometimes, it just doesn't pays to be greedy:p.

My smash follow through has often caught the fingers of my non-racquet hand. That smarts.
Here's another one.
When defending against a smash, do you sometimes end up playing a shot behind you? For me it is usually because I defend backhand, and when the smash is aimed at my racquet side hip. If I can't take the shuttle in front of my, I do the bullfighter thing where you move the body out of the way and hit the shuttle after it has gone past the body. The other day I did this and really whipped the racquet to drive the shuttle back rather than block it to the net. Unfortunately my follow through was onto my arse. The impact of the frame left a big red line (which could have been hard to explain)

During one session of badminton, one of our members (nickname: Chinese Assasin) attempted to hit a backhand drive. Only problem was, that his partner was standing right next to him. Chinese Assasin hit his partner just above the eye splitting the skin. blood was pouring everywhere and his partner had to go to hospital for eight hours to get the skin above his eye stiched. Hence the nickname Chinese Assasin.

That seems to be a very common mishap among badders:(. Theoratically, it shouldn't happen if the player uses the non-racquet arm as a counterbalance.

I think it happens more when I smash when I haven't got into the correct position. If the shuttle is out to the right of you and you haven't gotten behind it, I think the normal shot is to rotate so that you have racquet arm back, but when you play the shot you dont rotate back. You play the shot with the body facing sideways. The follow through should then be more in the vertical plane.
Sometimes I don't get the initial rotation in and try to play the smash whilst still facing forwards. The follow through then comes across the body more, towards the left hand (ouch!)
Either bad footwork, or bad technique, or laziness, or combination thereof.

I've been hit on the shoulder,..face, back. head...tummy. they dont hurt, cuz XXL t-shirts helps :D
I keep hitting myself on my left knee at the same spot. I dont know if i hit it or i got it by scratching my knee on the floor from leeping trying to get a drop shot. It will never heal because i play too often and it hurts !!! :(

Talking about badminton injuries, in my case, mostly come from my shoes and my partner.
Shoes, if not tied firm enough, I can almost certain I will sprain my ankles. Most of the time are minor and the injuries go away in few days.
Partner, :) this is most interesting. One partner who I regularly play with at the club swings his racket like he is playing singles. A few times, we were in defense position and he returned a smash with backhand "swing". The swing followed its full path from left, all the way to the right making a 180 degree half circle, and it hit my arms, head, sometimes, legs...anything you can think of. This happens so many times that I have to maintain at least few feet distance from him on the court.
Another partner, also very "dangerous" guy. When he fixes his eyes on a shot, noone can stop him. He would make a full power swing into your head even though the shot does not belong to him, especially coming right in the middle. Man, we crashed few times in the past and he almost broke my MP 99 !

I was once warming up to play a match and was loosening my wrists up by flicking my racquet about in all directions.....my mind wandered and I painfully hit myself where it hurts THE most. Needless to say it brought my partner and opposition (who were friends of mine) great pleasure to see me crouching down taking deep breaths!!

i kept on hitting myself on the knee, and i had bruises for like a week:(
last week, while playing a match, my partner hit the birdie right between our opponent's leg, that XXX area, dunno if it hurts but it sure is really embarrassing since we r playing on the court right in front of the audience stand

Sheez! Just today, I managed to hit myself on the non-racquet elbow while trying to retrieve a baseline fast clear Mia-Audina style:(. There's still a sore reddish dot right on the bloody knuckle of the elbow:mad:.
LiLYu, it's not too bad if you get hit there... just pray that the other guy/gal doesn't have a speeding bullet of a smash:D. Most of the time, the bagginess of the shorts/trackpant cushions the shot. I think Jimbouk's experience tops the embarassing AND painful experience catagory:p.

Hi Guys
I wonder whether you have experienced this injury before, self-inflicted I think, and what remedies can you offer, apart from rest, rest and more rest.
Just directly opposite my left knee, at the back, I have this nagging pain which made my left leg rather heavy and interfered with my movements. I had this before and it just came back without warning 2 weeks ago. When I woke up this morning I could hardly walk. Admittedly I had a few games yesterday afternoon. I wonder whether foot reflexology massage will do the trick?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Hey Loh,
Perhaps it's a mild ligament sprain? It's your pushing leg right(assuming that you're a right hander)? I think rest from baddy should clear up the problem. Perhaps work in some leg exercises targeting that specific area when the pain is gone.

I have just I found out that my so called wrist injury is a bad fracture of my wrist bone. :(
Damn,it will take quite some time.I found some information regarding moved bones at the wrist and found out its called atrithis if im not wrong,I noticed the side of my wrist is bumpy while the other hand is not,and also i also have a feeling that my right hand seems a little dislocated.Everytime I twist my wrist I can hear a *krak krak krak* sound quite loudly. That really makes me think that the bone of my wrist IS really dislocated.Gotta be me doing strokes the wrong way when im playing kinda hardcore last year(I'm also a very hard hitter).
So...is it possible to be cured by self treatment ?
Replies would be greatly thanked :D
Anyhow thanks in advance! ;)

There's not really such a thing as a dislocated bone. A dislocation is where the bones that make up a joint (eg. the ball/socket joint of the shoulder) become separated. It is not an injury to the bone as such - only to the joint system.
It don't believe that it is possible to dislocate a wrist.
A fracture is damage to a bone. A "break" is a fracture where there the bone is split into two separate pieces.
It's obvious that you don't have a medical background, so self-diagnosis or diagnosis via a website forum is not going to be very useful. You should consult a doctor.

Oh...
I think i will consult a medical advises then..
Anyways thx for the reply :D
I also discovered it's not a good idea to jump up for a smash and land on your ankle, I mean how in the blue hell do you manage to twist your foot in enough to actually land on your ankle?
Anyway it's very sore and leaves you with a weak ankle which just buckles over without giving you any notice regardless of where you are and what you are doing! NOT GOOD!!
And after 4 weeks the pain is less but it's still weakened and I can't play badminton without a plastic ankle brace with hinged part to support my ankle.

Same here, Dill... I was doing a flick serve return on tuesday night when I slightly rolled on my racquet-side ankle:(. Luckily, I wasn't jumping too high otherwise it would have been worse. Ankle still feels abit sore and stiff.

Do you apply anything for that at all? After the mishap, I regularly applied Flexall Muscle Menthol Gel and it felt much better.
Also, for the rest of you guys... which muscle gel would you apply after a mild roll of the ankles? Heat or Cold ones? I have both but can't seem to make up my mind which one to use:confused:.

I apply more badminton approx 3-4 times a week and some coaching just so it never has a chance to rest or get better!
When it happened it was a week before a tournament and I put the old ice pack on it which helped and I also put ibuprofen gel on it and also took ibuprofen tablets just in case!
It was getting better but I had 2 competitions in 2 weekends one after the other and I don't think it helps

Injuries i've had:
Self inflicted: every one of my fingers for my racquet hand. back of my left knee, my lower back, shoulder, upper arm, left leg and foot.
From Opponent: in the forehead, the face (most places), ear, basically wherever a smash can go
From Partner: head, ear, neck, back
Inflicted on others: front and back Neck, eye, leg, stomach, knee, arm, back, hand...
basically everything. I haven't broken anything yet...which is a blessing.

Just a few days ago, whilst playing mixed doubles, my wife did a short backhand smash near the net and the shuttle hit the girl on the other side, who was near the net, right in the eye. She let out a loud distress cry and there was some slight bleeding from inside her right eye and she couldn't see very well. She was on soft contact lens. Maybe her cornea was peforated. An ambulance came to take her to the hospital nearby and she was given some initial treatment and then referred to an ENT hospital two days later. We hope it is not serious but will monitor her situation closely. Makes us feel really bad.

This sounds like a subconjunctival haemorrage, which will settle over a few days :) Of course, it could be something worse, but it's not likely.
