View Full Version : The Badminton Revolution Cup 2004
I'll be in Calgary around May 18 and I'm wondering if anyone can provide more info about this demonstration game. Do we need to purchase tickets for this event and how much? Where can we buy the tickets? Why is it a 4 days event? How are the seats classified? Is filming allowed? Oh, btw, will Ardy Wiranta be playing in this demo game? Thanks! :)
Kelvin 04-28-2004, 07:58 PM Good question Dex, I thought I would revive this thread seeing as I will be back in the city...
Hey Dex, care to meet up to play a few rounds?
Perhaps Eggroll, might have some more information for us about this demonstration/tournament...
I'll be back in Calgary tomorrow night, and will be calling the Talisman centre, to get some more info for you, I'll post it once I get the details.

Kelvin 05-05-2004, 04:41 PM Well...
I did some calling, and also looked at the poster for this event.
Apparently there will be some sort of grand prize money to attract some of the international pros to this event.
It is now being held on June 02-05, at the Talisman Centre.
I'll have to check out the poster again to see if I missed anything else.

yonexfanatic 05-05-2004, 06:00 PM here is a link to a thread which regards this "tournament".
http://www.badmintonforum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=13073
From what i saw on a poster, it's roughly $500 for all 4 days for a group or people (not sure how many) - this is a "Gold Pack". As for single tickets, I heard from someone that it's roughly $15-$20 (this might be incorrect).
btw dex, i believe ardy w. is playing.
Kelvin 05-05-2004, 06:35 PM Thanks Yonexfan,
I think I will just ask the club for a poster tomorrow, cause it looked pretty cool :p plus I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to badminton paraphernalia, and also since I'm scoping out the festivities at the nationals :p
I do have to admit though, and this is getting off topic here...
The level of competition has been going up, with our young ones in the country, and this is very good to see. :)
A big congrats, and thank you to all those who participate in the sport, and also to promote badminton, you're doing a wonderful job of developing our youths.

PS: Next Stop after Revolution Cup, plan trip for Vancouver, for World Juniors :D
yonexfanatic 05-05-2004, 08:31 PM No probs.
It's too bad I live in Edmonton and not in Calgary. It would make it a lot more easier to attend the badminton revolution event if I lived in the 403 :D.
I know a few friends attending the last few days of the event, unfortunately that's the date of my grad so I'm unable to go with them.
If any of you guys go, tell me how it goes.

if you guys are interested in the information,
there is a calgary badminton site.
hope this is useful
I would be interested in watching Ardy play against Chen Hong.. see if his magic still works.
CH is not playing so no one will get a chance to see their matchup.
But, darnit, this tourney is held at the worst possible time since I really wanted to watch. Oh well, all the Calgary Bfers, plz tell us how it goes and some pics would be nice!
I recently got a ticket for The Badminton Revolution Cup and is confused about the time my ticket is scheduled for. Below the date, it says from 1-3p.m and 6-9p.m. Does that mean my ticket is valid for both of these ranges or just for the selected time i decide to go to?

well i went to see the first nite.
Kenneth Jonasson totally owns our canadian MS. He is good plus that he just came off TC so his body is still in tune. I think KJ will take the MS title here. My ranking of canadian MS is still intact, our best MS is just A-. In my Pro, A and A-, etc ranking system, Pro should and did own the A-'s.
Saw the ardy against peter ramussen. Ardy loss in 3 games. Ardy still have his skills but i could see him running out of gas. Ardy came close wrapping up the match on the second game but i think he was gassing out at around point 13. Just couldn't bury peter. Peter was super fit. He play all 3 games with equal speed and stamina with no let up in pace; lots of running and jumpsmashing. Deep angled smash near the lines where peter got most of the point from Ardy. Ardy prolly smashed about 4 times in all 3 games to conserve energy. Ardy focused mainly of tight net shots and defense were his strength against peter. Ardy caught and returned many of peter net kills and made peter hopelessly running back to retrieve the shuttle with no avail of course. Kenneth came out to give peter some pointer in between games, prolly telling peter ' just do more jumpsmashing' :D
Also watch marlvene mainaky against a 2nd tier danish guy. No problem for Marlvene.
watch an exhibition MD too where halim heryanto pair up with a local player against a ex danish MD pairing up with a local player as well. Halim, of course, is great to watch.
I didnt go watch on thursday, flames was playing that nite. :D
yonexfanatic 06-04-2004, 01:23 PM i got tickets for the finals on saturday so i'll be heading down to calgary to catch the action. it should be pretty good. i too also think that Kenneth Jonasson will be the winner, just by looking at the results and knowing the level he's at right now.
cooler 06-04-2004, 01:28 PM LOL, maybe i'll see ya over there :)
Well i think Ardy is too old for that.. but thumbs up for him , for playing in the tourney. At least now he can gauge himself. I also saw Misbun Sidek play against some of the Msian National Teams. He can still take the first Set
( very seldom ) , but after that No GAS. Maybe the players were giving him chance. hehehe
is anybody planning to take some pictures? will be happy to host them in badmintonalbum.com for you.. thanks!
cooler 06-04-2004, 06:10 PM i know a badminton player/photographer that is taking pics, i'l ask him if he has some to share with
cooler 06-05-2004, 01:32 AM I think the 2004 Revolution cup try to re-create a tournament atmosphere and flavor like a 5-6 stars tournament at a smaller scale. It has a center court with darkened background. They introduce each player with fanfare like in boxing, upbeat music in between water breaks and games, player interview after each match. I'm attaching some photo taken tonite, not great as i got a compact dig. camera and it doesnt have much manual override. The first pic show the court setup style. The 2nd pic is kenneth jonassen vs marleve mainaky. Third pic is Peter Rassmussen - moving too fast to get a good image. Fourth pic is canada's andrew dabeka(dark shirt) vs a danish MS(red shirt)
cooler 06-05-2004, 02:31 AM forgot to add:
kenneth J, Halim haryanto, keith chan(CAN): AT700
marleve M :MP100
peter rassmussen: carlton
niels kaldau: forza
andrew dabeka (CAN): mp99
pullela gopichand: ?
ardy wiranata: mp88
jim ronny andersen: babalot
william milroy: forza
any pics of ardy in action?
cooler 06-05-2004, 06:28 PM any pics of ardy in action?
no, i was too busy watching and my camera isnt up to par.
ardy played consolation with marleve mainaky. Marleve won in 2 set.
It is mostly a relaxing match to entertain the crowd. You should know that ardy doesnt train or compete anyone so he is definitely not physically quick as his former years. He still have his strokes and tactic but in drives with marleve, marleve won almost all the drive rallies. Being relaxed, both show off shot making that is normally outside of normal competition. There was net play duals, etc.
The final was between kenneth J and Peter R. Too bad Peter R isnt up to form, making more than average unforced errors. Kenneth took peter in 2 game, 15-6, 15-8?? or something like that
the MD exhibitions were the best to watch since they were all for fun. Halim Haryanto definitely a level up over other players on the court. Short lifts were slammded down by halim, i mean steep backhands smash onto empty spot on court without looking at the net at all. The two danish MD were ex nationals, quite strong smashing but only one was doing the smashing while the other just play the net and force the lifts. In one rally, the danish keep smashing at halim and halim play the queue and returning back only to the smasher. The idle danish partner look bored and walk and sat with the audience while his danish partner keep smashing at halim. It took quite a number of smashes. I can see the shuttle was disintegrating in the air after each smash. The shuttle was a goner after that rally. LOL.
yonexfanatic 06-06-2004, 01:06 AM I was able to catch the action today. Maybe my standards are a little high, but I expected more in the final. Overall, the three matches that were played today (the 2 exibitions & final) weren't as great as I thought they'd be.
Can't blamed Ardy though. We all know that he's not at his prime anymore so it was a pretty easy match for Marleve, like cooler described. However, I really wished the game was played at a quicker pace. It seemed as if Marleve was taking the game too easily although I guess it can be argued that he didn't need to go 'all out'.
As for the doubles exibition, I was pleased to see Haryanto there. His smashes are unbelievable! By far I thought that this match was the highlight of the day. It involved comedy, and skill (a combination of power and techniques).
At this point, it seems like i'm just telling a recap of cooler's post :p, hopefully you don't mind the similarities. Final Singles match - it was decent. A bit too many unforced errors from Peter for my comfort. It took away from the experience, like mentioned, I expected more. I say this because at that level, I'd expect more consistancy - guess it was just a bad day for Peter.
I was able to take some video clips of the matches, max 20 secs due to the digital camera limitation. If anyone wants to see them, just ask. As for pics, I wasn't able to get any at the time. However, my friend did capture some nice action pics. I'll see if I can get a hold of some of them.
cooler 06-06-2004, 01:53 AM yonexfanatic, ardy vs marleve was a consolation match, ardy wasnt going all out although marleve will out last ardy even if ardy really tried. Remember, peter needed 3 games to take ardy, and in that match peter R. was playing much better than againist kenneth in the final.
thanks cooler for all the pics!
how was the audience ? was it a good turnout?
cooler 06-06-2004, 02:11 AM audience wise, it could be better. I think about 200-300 people. The reason being is this whole week the tournament had to compete with the calgary's stanley cup playoff on thursday and saturday. Traffic and parking was really bad especially yesterday (saturday, home game where calgary hopes to wrap up it up). I've attached photos of the pengrowth saddledome (in the stanley cup thread) where the hockey game is played, just across a road from the corral (the older hockey rink) where the badminton tournament was played and where i was standing to take those photos.
yonexfanatic 06-06-2004, 02:04 PM yeah, my bad. i didn't even think about the previous match that peter played. it makes sense. however, i still didn't expect the amount of unforced errors made from him.
cooler 06-06-2004, 11:57 PM I didnt catch any of gopichand matches.
he did beat our canadian but didnt pass the round with kenneth jonassen.
here is a photo i caught him on the sideline talking wif someone
