View Full Version : Which badminton video to buy?

I think I may break down and get a tape or two of international competition. I am looking for a tape with the following characteristics: (a) an outstanding, competitive match showing a variety of shots and styles, particularly innovative, creative or amazing shots; (b) educational value, which may give me ideas on improving my shots and strategies; and (c) good video quality. I do not care which players or countries are featured, nor which tournament or the year of the tournament.
Out of the videos listed on the IBF site,
http://www.intbadfed.org/merch.html
which would you select for the following categories?
1) Mens singles
2) Mens doubles
The USAB has quite a number of videos but they are mostly from the U.S. Open and I imagine the level of play is a step down from some of the bigger tournaments.
Anyone obtained videos from Yves LaCroix? It sounds like he is mostly interested in trading, rather than selling. He does describe the quality of his tapes, but if anyone has obtained tapes from him, could you comment about the dubbing quality? I guess I will try to dig up my old French dictionary and send him an e-mail in French this weekend requesting more information.
Any other suggestions of a videos source that would be easy and/or reliable for ordering a video in North America?
Thanks for your help.

Congratulations Brett for making the first step.
but becareful, it is like addiction, soon you will become like us, willing to travel to countries far far away, just to be able to catch some badminton Live on TV. or to watch a real tournament. :)
and unlike other addictive like drugs, this has no cure.

1985 Men's double World Champs final. Li/Tian vs Park/Kim.
This has excellent variation in serves, return of serves, turning defense into attack and English commentary. In contrast to some of today's matches, the pace is slightly slower and therefore a more realistic goal of improvement can be set. (IMO)
Does anyone have footage on 1982, 1983,1984 All England
finals and 1983 World championships in Denmark?Let me
know please, I've been looking for them a long time.
I'm sure IBF released them during that period.

Thanks for all your help guys. A friend who is from Malasia is going to have his relatives there tape the Sudirman Cup and another relative is visiting there and returning to the States soon, so I will have some tapes to review in the next month or so. Then I will start looking at other videos, as several of you have suggested.
Brett, I'd suggest the 1996 Atlanta Olympics tape as a good teaser... it's got classic badminton from classic players. P-E Hoyer, Dong Jiong, Ricky/Rexy, Cheah/Yap, Ge Fei/Gu Jun, Kim Dong Moon/Gil Young Ah, Park Yoo Bong... whoa.

I have bought tapes from Yves. He willing sells them. The tapes are good quality and you don't have to worry about converting the tapes. Here is the link to buy tapes and pricing : http://www.volant.qc.ca/videos/VHS.html.
Actually his english is very good. It is just that he is from Quebec, I believe in that part of Canada they want to be there own french colony. I think Celine Dione is from there to that is why she has a French accent, but anyways.
I have not watched a lot of badminton since I only have about 10 hours of footage, 8 hours from Yves, but I would have to say that the 2000 Olympics men's doubles final is very good. I bought it from Yves. The reason I think the tape is good is two different styles of play. The indonesians are very good at attacking and the koreans are good at defending at least in this match. That makes for some very good rallies. Because this is the olympic final, the intensity is unbelivable. Almost every point is very hard fought. Also the crowd is very intense since they are cheering for Indonesia, so this adds to the excitement. I don't think I have ever seen anything like it.
