Olympic-bound athletes to undergo two weeks centralised training
Utusan Online
KUALA LUMPUR May 25 - Malaysian athletes bound for the Athens Olympics in August will undergo two weeks of centralised training at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, two weeks before leaving for Athens.
Chef De Mission, Datuk Dr M Jegathesan said only those currently undergoing training locally will attend the training camp.
"For those who are based overseas, they can continue their training in their respective destinations and proceed to Athens, a week before the Games," he told reporters here on Tuesday.
The Athens Olympics is scheduled from Aug 13-29.
Jegathesan said since the Olympics was more of an individual challenge, athletes would be given physical and mental trainings, apart from instilling the values of discipline.
"However, I'm confident with their level of discipline, as they have gone through major hurdles in their bid to overcome the qualifying standard set by the International Olympic Council," he said.
Based on the July 15 dateline, 20 athletes had qualified on merit with badminton emerging as the biggest contributor with nine athletes namely, Wong Choong Hann, Roslin Hashim, Lee Chong Wei, Choong Tan Fook/Lee Wan Wah, Chan Chong Ming/Chew Choon Eng and Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui.
The others who have also qualified are Mon Redee Sut Txi (archery), Yuan Yufang (athletics), Leong Mun Yee, Gracie Junita Terry Pego (diving), Ng Shu Wai (artistic gymnastics) Ricky Teh (shooting), Ling Keng Liat, Saw Yu Khy, Allen Ong, Siow Yi Teng (swimming) and Elaine Teo (taekwondo).
Josiah Ng (cycling), Kevin Lim (sailing), Nazmizan Mohammad, Noraseela Khaleed (athletics) and Adnan Yusoh (boxing) are among athletes who are still attempting to make the grade.
Yufang, Mun Yee, Gracie, Shu Wai are currently training in China while Keng Liat and Allen Ong are in the US. Elaine is training in Canada.
