Of course you and silvia can come to msia anytime. :) Well if i have the time to go China and meet Lidan or Xia or any China team player.. of course i would. But usually no time for that and my time clashes with them as well. I do know where to meet them.

Good news for Honghong.
China will send their top three singles to Malaysia Open (lin, bao and Xia).
You can check the name list at www.thestar.com.my
However there is no information like which stadium and schedule. They like to do thing at last minute :D
Kuantan is a nice place for weekend holiday beside enjoying the local food you can enjoy the beautiful sceneries along the beach.
(I sound like the Malaysia Tourism Board member, promoting kuantan :p )
Who is interested to go?

Yep, that's just too bad. Have to wait for fans who go and watch and post it here, or else we'll have to wait for the next day for the news :(
Does anybody know the schedule? Like, Tuesday 29 June, will it be the qualifying round or first round or what?? When will the matches in the main draw commence for each category?
I can't access to the woldbadminton.net either. Whenever I try to enter the page, a blank, white page will appear in front me. Am I the only one facing this problem?

yeah me too i've been experiencing this for quite a while already. i can only access to the world rankings page.
Yeah, I'm getting that blank page too when I click on the 'latest results' link to the Malaysian Open. I'm not terribly concerned as WorldBadminton.net usually has a delay in delivering results. I doubt there is an official website for the Open, but I guess there is a delay as results have to be relayed to WorldBadminton.net for the eventual posting of results...

some qualifiers had to play 2 games to get into the main draw.
as you know mostly are malaysians. only three are foreigners at this stage. notable entries include former malaysian open men's single champion james chua. not sure if he's through though. will try to update when i get news from friends on site ;)
tomorrow should be more interesting where young upstarts from the qualifiers may cause upsets?????? who knows.

I just read this thread and being and being form Kuantan originally, I'll try answer some of the questions posed here...
From Thestar online:
TODAY’S PROGRAMME
9.00am: Qualifying tournament.
11.00am: Men’s singles first round.
1.15pm: Mixed doubles first round.
5.00pm: Men’s singles second round.
6.30pm: Women’s doubles first round.
8.45pm: Men’s doubles first round.
Someone was asking where the hall is, I read that it will be in Indra Mahkota which is about 10 minutes (north) of Kuantan town. Landmark? The racecourse is the closest thing I can think of.
No sign of a webpage. Perhaps someone with decent background can contact BAM and make them a proposal to do the web pages for competions in Malaysia in the future... now that'd be a good idea.
Hope that helps.

Chinese players are the ones to beat, says Lin DanKUANTAN: Call it arrogance or just plain confidence. But when world number Lin Dan speaks his mind, you have to take notice.
Like when he was asked which singles player he dreaded playing the most in a tournament, Lin Dan said that no player outside China was capable of beating him at the moment.
Having chalked up an impressive record of only one defeat in a run stretching more than 30 matches since October last year, he should know what he is talking about.
Since losing 4-15, 4-15 in the German Open final in September 2003 to South Korean Lee Hyun-il, the 21-year-old has won the Hong Kong Open, China Open, Swiss Open and the All-England Championships as well as staying unbeaten in the first singles throughout China’s successful Thomas Cup qualifiers and Finals campaign.
The only blot in his resume was the 13-15, 10-15 semi-final loss to compatriot Bao Chunlai in the Japan Open in April.
“Judging from the way the Chinese shuttlers are playing at the moment, I can safely say that we are the ones to beat in every competition,” said Lin Dan, who is the top seed in the ongoing Malaysian Open badminton championships here, in a rare interview with the Malaysian press yesterday.
“In fact, the motivation to do well in the Malaysian Open is great as China’s Olympic line-up has yet to be named and this is everybody’s last chance to impress the coaches.”
Lin Dan and Chen Hong are tipped to be included for Athens, with the third singles ...slot a toss-up between Xia Xuanze and Bao Chunlai.
Lin Dan attributes his success to discipline and sacrifices made since childhood.
The shuttler, who hails from the Fujian district, has not returned home to visit his parents for the past five years.
“I train in Beijing and am constantly on the move to compete in tournaments. I only get to meet my parents once a year when they make a short trip to see me play in a competition in southern China.
“I used to miss them a lot, but now it is not so bad as I keep in touch with my family through SMS (Short Message Service),” explained Lin Dan, who hardly broke sweat in registering a 15-3, 15-0 first round win over Hasbullah Hafiz of Malaysia.
The win sets him up for a second round meeting against another Malaysian, Lee Tsuen Seng, today.
The two players last met in the third round of the China Open in November last year, with Lin Dan winning in straight games.
Unlike Lin Dan, Tsuen Seng has endured a year he’d rather forget.
Even the player himself admitted that his performance at the recent Thomas Cup was one of the worst in his playing career.
But Tsuen Seng comes into the Malaysian Open confident of putting up a fight against the top seed. The Malaysian defeated Spain’s Sergio Llopis 15-7, 15-4 in his first round match yesterday.
“After my disastrous performance in the Thomas Cup, I have worked hard to improve my game. I am playing with more confidence now.
“Although it will be a tall order to topple Lin Dan, I believe that I can put up a good fight, especially if I can maintain my level of play in the first round,” said Tsuen Seng.

According to Shuyi, many top players such as Marleve Mainaky, Agus Hariyanto and of course, Boonsak Ponsana. He gave Chen Hong a good game and generally speaking, not many players can take so much points off such a composed player. And Marleve Mainaky too gave Hafiz Hashim a good game but Agus Hariyanto was easily defeated by Sony Dwi Kuncoro. I wonder what has got into him recently. He used to be among the top 10s.

Damn ! How could Candra and Limpele allow themselves to lose to a pair whom they usually could defeat with their usual partners. Anyway, Tan Fook is my favourite player and I would definitely hope he could excel in this tournament before attaining greater heights at Athens.
And I would appeal to all who catch Malaysian channels, e.g. TV 1 and 2, to brief me about any live broadcast. Thanx !!!

Youngsters Markis Kidho and Hendra Setiawan sent Fu Haifeng and Cai Yun packing 17-16 15-12!!!
They will meat their teammates Alven and Luluk tomorrow in quarter finals...
wow. that's a big one! they were slated to be one of the favorites. i am sure LiYB will be steaming again.
the MS race between the 4 Chinese is still to be seen. Ronald is on a roll lately and we will see if he can extend his Japan Open win.

Well, the problem is that Ronald has a catastrophic head-to-head record against Chen Hong (0-8 !!!) and I don't know whether he can overcome this psychologically...
just wait and see!
I find Japanese Shoji Sato is being quite impressive too : after beating Kenneth Jonassen in the first round (17-16 in the decider), he thrashed Dicky Palyama 15-3 15-4 and nearly won today against in-form former world champion Peter Rasmussen!! (finally lost 7-15 17-14 15-12...)

Yeah. After watching those double pairs in the last century, e.g., Ricky/Rexy
or Gunawan/Wijaya, it seems that Cai/Fu still have a long way to go to really
get into the top level. They are doing well in the last two years just because
those good pairs are getting old.

WOMEN'S SINGLES
First Round:
[4] Mia Audina Tjiptawan (NED) bt Miho Tanaka (JPN) 3-11, 11-3, 13-10;
It should be,
[4] Mia Audina Tjiptawan (NED) bt Maria Kristin (INA) 3-11, 11-3, 13-10;
I think Chen Hong should be able to beat Susilo.
I hope not! :D
Susilo seems to be stronger mentally after having beaten Bao at the Japan Open and Taufik (13-15, 15-9, 15-8) here in the 3rd Round.
Chen Hong did not have an easy victory over Boonsak (15-10, 17-15) and Ng Wei (15-10, 13.-15, 15-5) and I am hoping for an upset for Susilo, who is counting on his fitness to overcome Chen. But Chen used to be extremely fit. I'm not sure of his condition now but if his matches against Boonsak and Ng are any indication, he seems to be quite fit. Susilo has to play above himself if he wants a win badly. :)

I'm really diappointed when I heard that my favourite pair CAI YUN/FU HAIFENG lost to the young Indonesian. I'm very surprised because I've never heard the name of the Indonesians before. Who are they ? I think they're really new.
But, I hope CAI YUN/FU HAIFENG will be better in the next olympics and they can win the gold. Bravo China ! Zhong Guo Dui Jia You !!

I am not sure about of this news. But I am speaking from what I had heard from my friends. So you guys are feel to make any corrections.
I feel that Indonesia are producing some young guns. Pairs like Joko Riyadi, Hendra Gunawan and Hendra Setiawan, Markis Kido are starting to make their presence known. Joko and Hendra got to round 3 and was knocked out by third seeds veteran Choong and Lee. And Markis and Hendra despactched the top pair for this tournament to set up a quater final encounter with compatriots Alven and Luluk.
I think that they would take over the older players like Candra and Flandy after they retire after the Olympics Malaysia can depend on players Koo Kien Keat and Chan Chong Ming to keep their doubles' hopes alive. Whereas, China have firmly established Cai, Fu and Sang, Zheng in the top 10. But I have yet to see any new pairs coming from other powerhouses like, South Korea and Denmark
Btw could anyone brief us about the quarter-finals encounters today. Thanx very much
The style of Fu/Cai is very characteristic of a young pair. It's about shuttle-whacking -- speed and power, not so much thinking. An older pair might not be able to keep up with their tempo, but might beat them with better tactics.
My guess is that this young Indonesian pair matched Fu/Cai in terms of speed and power, and the Chinese pair simply were not experienced enough to realize this and switch into another style of playing.

I've been 'away' for about three weeks from badminton and had not been following Malaysian Open much due to Euro 2004. And holy mackerel! Lee Chong Wei is da man! He beat his bogeyman (not really, but close), the bogey who defeated him last year in KK at the same tournament. Either he is getting better or Chen Hong is getting crap, I hope it's the former.
And Park Sung Hwan beats Lin Dan! As Kwun mentioned, it's one of the three reasons:
1. Peak too early.
2. Lost of focus.
3. Avoiding injury, warm up match.
This must serve as a 'positive' news for badminton camps which is not of the Red Republic and we have also seen Bao crash.
Truly, I have one true hope for Lee CW - to go and prove that he is not a jaguh kampung* which a lot of Malaysian singles had been called down the years. He must also prove his worth at Athens, Indonesia, Korea, England, everywhere.
* literal translation means 'village champion'.

I would not make to many conclusions for the olympics, based on the malaysian open results.
Audina's loss, some of the Chinese (cai/fu, lin dan, etc.) losing early... let's not forget it's all just a training before the real thing in Athens.
Steffensen/Laybourn lost 13-15, 15-5, 15-10 to Hadiyanto/Alven, after surprisingly beating Lundgaard/Eriksen in the quarters.

If anyone's ever seen Marleve Mainaiky after a match you'll see how gracefully he accepts both victory and defect. I've often seen him patting his victorious/beaten opponent on the back after shaking hands. I like the sportsmanship he shows.
The term 'Jaguh Kampung' was I think quite suited to Rashid Sidek. Nearly unbeatable in Stadium Negara (that's where most of the big competitions were held back then) he performed below expectations almost every other time.

I agree with you in that I too did not detect any ill feelings from jud8men's comments. I think you may have misconstrued my post. Please reread it. I did not pass any judgement on Chen Hong's character. I merely said that the act of shaking hands at the end of a match is a public display of courtesy and not really indicative of being a good sportsman. If you disagree with me on this point then you are in effect saying that players who shake hands after a match are good sportsman. I chose to disagree on this point.
I was interested in finding out which particular matches where the players did not shake hands which to me seems to be quite rare occasions.

Frankly, I really don't feel like arguing with you. The fact that you belittled Chen Hong's sincerety for Chong Wei's first major victory just didn't go down well with me. You were being too businesslike...to be precise, too matter-of-fact in passing your judgement. I have played in many tournaments myself and I really appreciate and respect a sincere opponent who truely acknowledge that you were just the better that day, not just coming up to the net and "touching" your hand without even looking at you.

I think BigMojo means that shaking hands after a match for pros are common or else it would show they are not being a good sport but doesn't neccessary show good sportsmanship but he didn't mean to say Chen Hong wasn't being a good sportsmanship because WL2127 stated that Chen Hong was hugging and kissing Wei after the match which did show good sportsmanship and wasn't for public courtesy which is true and BigMojo agreed on just that shaking hands don't mean good sportsmanship but Chen Hong was a good sportsmanship while Lin Dan wasn't because he wouldn't let Peter Gade change the shuttle and took off his shirt after the match which shows he doesn't show too much respect for his opponent and makes his opponent not want to hug him afterwards which makes the public thinks his opponent wasn't being a good sports like WL2127 stated that shaking hands shows that but BigMojo tells us why it wouldn't.

if the CH LCW match is just a window dressing in that (your) question, i suggest we open a new thread to discuss your topic, being as hot as it is. so as to avoid future misconception of your message as well as to eliminate all links to the outcome of the discussion with the perceived sportsmanship of those two players in the forum.

just want to know. does this answer your earlier question or does your question really have nothing to do with chen hong's and LCW's match.
You are right. My posting had nothing to do with the 'sportsmanship' of Chen Hong or LCW. I merely made an observation that shaking hands after a match is not indicative of good sportsmanship. One poster here correctly used the word 'perfunctory', and thats just it, the shaking of hands is a perfunctory gesture and a public display of common courtesy but I had not meant that as a description of Chen Hong's intention in his handshake with LCW. I find Chen Hong to be the least arrogant and brash of the Chinese singles players and as such I have the most respect for him.
I can understand everyone here getting 'hot under the collar' as they had thought I was being derogatory in my post regarding Chen Hong. That was never my intention. It was a general observation regarding 'hand shaking' after matches. I did not intend it to refer specifically to the CH-LCW match.
jug8man, I dont understand your reaction at all. There was no 'ill will' in my post. I merely asked as to which matches where the players did not shake hands. I guess my 'tone' must have sounded as if I was challenging you.
Kudos to SmashingBird and taneepak for reading my post as it is without any colouration. Thanks.

after all the disputes, after all the mind games, chen hong lost with a smile on his face and shook chong wei's hand. much like he did last year when he won. such a true sport man.
I dont ever recall any match where at the end the players did not shake hands. Its a public display of common courtesy, not really indicative of being a good sportsman. Please point me in the direction of which matches you have witnessed where the players did not shake hands at the end of the match.

my reaction is simple. i put 'shook hands' and 'sportsmanship' in the same paragraph and suddenly im being questioned of my rationality. i dont understand why would you need me to explain my posting as its was very simple direct and clear. am i or all posters required to explain everything in every tiny detail as just to justify that i called some one a great sportsman? yes perhaps you are right. i did feel challenged. till this point i still do not know why you requested me to "point you in the direction of which matches you have witnessed where the players did not shake hands at the end of the match" and for what purpose or good that could have ever come out of it.

i believe this is the part that 'misslead' most of us readers here on your message. especially after a quote of mine that mentions the sportsmanship of chen hong.
i cant speak for everybody or even wl2172, but this is where i was 'misslead'. sorry for sounding cynical but you just have not convinced me as there are too many loose ends and a whole lot of 'backtracking' in my perception of your post. but once again this is just my opinion and truthfully i can say there is no love lost between us, smile its a beautiful day. :)
and you still have not replied wether i answered your earlier question. if you could spare the time of course please do. :)
of yes one more thing. the word 'please' when requesting someone to retract a statement can do wonders for your PR. i suppose this is something i learned the hard way myself :D
