Hi,

I am working on my jump smash at the moment. But I am still not getting the timing right at the moment. I want to know when I should start the jump? At the point when the shuttle starts to drop or seconds before it starts to drop?

And also when your racket hits the bird, your body should be just stop freeze at the air, right?

Any comment is much appreciated.

Hi Jonathan,

I learned the jumpsmash around a year ago with some hints from some bboard reader. the key to the whole thing is timing, as you probably noticed.

you have to estimate where the shuttle will be when you are up in the air. but you cannot use the instant when the shuttle start dropping to time yourself. this is because all clears are differents, high deep clear, flat clears, etc, etc. the best way to get used to the timing is to find a friend who'd feed you consistant 3/4 court high clear.

the way to approach it is, stand on the base line, when the shuttle comes, jump up and forward. i find that i get more power when i hit the shuttle at the instant when my body starts to fall, i guess the gravitational pull of my body also adds to the force on the shuttle.

see if that works, we can continue help you master your skills.
