Just thought you guys who don't visit World Badminton Online, might want to read some stuff about new stuff going in the sport.
"What’s new at the world championships
by William Kings
30/05/2001 : Times are changing at the world championships – and in badminton generally.
For the first time at the world championships players are appearing with their names and nations on the backs of their shirts and they are playing in team strips in the Sudirman Cup.
It hasn’t quite gone as far as rugby or soccer with countries appearing in their familiar colours and wearing an away strip when there is a clash but that day can’t be long off.
England and Denmark, for instance, have distinctive red shirts – which is fine… except when they were playing each other.
And imagine how easy it would be to identify teams if, say, South Africa were wearing their distinctive green and gold Springbok rugby-type tops. It’s surely the way ahead and is a good opportunity for sponsors like Yonex to produce team shirts to sell in the same way football fans go for their favourite player’s shirt.
For Cantona read Hidayat or Gade – although a bit tricky if your favourite player is Sathinee Chankrachangwong. It doesn’t sit too easily across the shoulders.
One good idea on the scoring side is the flashing score lights when setting is taking place. It’s easy to spot and helps the fans keep up to speed.
Speaking of scoring, these will be the last world championships under the traditional scoring system if the current six-month trial of five games to seven points proves a success. Who knows? It sounds like matches will be shorter – and late-night finishes could be a thing of the past too!"
Now for those of you who stay up-to-date on this sport you'll know that on 24 August - 01 September, 2001 in Calgary, Alberta, CANADA will hold it's 1st Canadian Junior International Badminton Championships.
Now here's something interesting about the rules...
"CLOTHING:
WHITES, including warm-ups and footwear will be required. All participants are encouraged to have their country name on the back of their game jerseys. "
The issue has been raised before on other forums; How embarrassing is it for Canada, and for the sport really, is it that they are playing host to a prestigious event for the Juniors in the sport, and call it and international event; yet stick to old rules that governed, and may have made the sport boring back in the old days???
It's little wonder why the IBF views the Canadian badminton federation as a joke...
Not just because of the defunked system that does not model the IBF guidelines for a badminton federation, all the way to the controversial selection criteria for our SC/WC teams.
What do you international people think of Canada Bad. federation's standpoint on this issue? What about the other Canadians, what do you think of this clothing issue??
