View Full Version : Run in with RCMP
bighook 06-15-2004, 01:29 PM For those who don't know the RCMP stands for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. This was a few years back when I was working a graveyard shift at a 24 hour donut shop.Anyways at about 3am a group of officers come in on break and one of the officers starts looking at me strangely.I am wondering if something is wrong like perhaps I am wearing a chocolate mustache or something but then he says I know you from someplace.Well I for the life of me can't remember this guy and start thinking perhaps he has me mistaken for some other criminal or something.Well he continues and then says are you from back east?I said "Yeah from Newfoundland" .Then he says did you go to the university and I said yes stating the years I attended still wondering where this police officer knows me from.Suddenly a light bulb comes on from the police officer and he says" Now I know where I remember you from. You killed me on the badminton court.".I breathed a sigh of relief and laughed.Having played this game for so many years I can honestly say I have forgotten so many of the people I have played.Anyways just a tidbit I thought might evoke a chuckle.Anybody else have funny stories?
Pete LSD 06-15-2004, 01:34 PM Hey Bighook,
That's a great story. I think it's a good way to promote badminton outside of the usual club and community centre. The RCMP is quite an organization that one could promote badminton. Are you still in touch with this RCMP officer?
Regards,
Pete

bighook 06-15-2004, 01:39 PM I haven't seen him for a long time.Perhaps he got posted elsewhere.Yeah they are a great group of people.Another person I ran into who plays badminton was an instructor from my trades training who noticed I put it on my resume. You never know!
wood_22_chuck 06-15-2004, 07:44 PM From the amount of playful jibes I get from my manager about the "sissyness" of badminton, I'm skeptical (but hopeful) if badminton will break into the RCMP tough-guys organization :D as something they would do.
I picture more traditional rough housing American football, or something like that.
Nice story bighook! He didn't write you a ticket for "a broken tail-light," did he? Payback for owning him on the badminton court :D

cappy75 06-15-2004, 08:17 PM I think it's more popular in the RCMP because it trains their reflex actions and it's less strenuous than football:D. I know of a friend who regularly played baddy with two officers in a detention facility gym in Edmonton.

wood_22_chuck 06-15-2004, 08:33 PM Women's correctional? (I'm imitating my boss here.)

cappy75 06-15-2004, 09:00 PM It's correctional facility as well as a training facility for RCMP officers. It's in Edmonton, that's all I know. Amazing that they actually have a badminton court in there, eh:p?

wood_22_chuck 06-15-2004, 09:40 PM Really? Wow ... I wonder how entrenched badminton is in the RCMP then. In my company, nearly all the badminton players are China immigrants, and are happy just knocking birdies over the net.
RCMP ... wonder if any of them discovered BForum yet.

cooler 06-15-2004, 11:38 PM A few year back, calgary hosted the the World Police Game and badminton was one of the event.

Actually the RCMP in Vancouver also have a badminton gym at their Vancouver headquarter office. A few of the asian RCMPs are regulars at the badminton gym, but not a popular sport among the rest.

LOL, lucky for them few who get the courts all for themselves.
wonder if they would rent it out to you badminton nuts in Van.?
timeless 06-16-2004, 03:55 AM A RCMP officer once told me that years ago they pulled a sedan out of a corn field on the side of a highway. The driver was a new immigrant who claimed that the car salesman at the dealership told him, "With cruise control on the car practically drives itself". The driver had apparently never been in a car with cruise control before, and took the salesman a bit too literally.

Unfortunately, RCMP headquarter is of course considered a secured area and only guest accompanied by RCMP badminton players are allowed to use the gym! :(
Pete LSD 06-17-2004, 09:09 PM A couple of months ago on my way home from VRC early in the morning :D I was stopped by the Vancouver Police. It was the usual drinking and driving road check. The officer asked me if I had a drink and where I had been. I said VRC and the officer instantly recognized the infamous racquet club. Too bad I didn't ask if he plays baddie

That's because he (or they) had stopped lot of drivers who belongs to VRC :D :p
That's because he (or they) had stopped lot of drivers who belongs to VRC :D :pall of which are at 3-4am in the morning as well. :)
Good thing he didnt arrest you on "assaulting" charges on court. :)
Pete LSD 06-17-2004, 11:35 PM LOL :D What, arrest bird killers . . . ??? :D :D :D

Pete LSD 06-17-2004, 11:39 PM Actually, I am getting quite sick and tire of 8-PM-till-2-AM session, which is followed by early breakfast. Just imagine how much one can improve by training six hours instead of playing competitively against other badders.
all of which are at 3-4am in the morning as well. :)
Pete LSD 06-17-2004, 11:44 PM Shiiiiiii, just to let you know on this little secret. Actually, the Vancouver Police provides weekly escort to injuried VRC badders at least once a week. We have one eye injury at least once a week! Someone looks back and gets whack in the eye.
:D :D :D
That's because he (or they) had stopped lot of drivers who belongs to VRC :D :p
