Misbun was accompanied by National Sports Council (NSC) physiology department head Yeoh Wee Kian and the duo will be gathering data on the conditions of the Goudi Hall where badminton will be staged on Aug 14-21.

Misbun and Wee Kian will be testing for humidity, weather conditions, distance between the venue and Games village and other relevant things to further enhance Malaysia's chances for a medal. This is the first time that the BA of Malaysia (BAM) have considered sending a coach to a venue overseas to get an early feel of the place and view the playing conditions and arrangements, which could be useful for Misbun as he prepares the players for Athens. Misbun and Wee Kian will arrive in Athens tonight and will start gathering material tomorrow.

They will also attend the test matches organised by the International Badminton Federation (IBF) at the Goudi Hall on the same day.

They will return to KL on Sunday.

BAM secretary P. Ganga Rao said it was good that the officials are showing an extra initiative. The suggestion came from Misbun himself.

"This shows that the preparation for the Olympics is on the right track. This is the first time we have sent a coach as an observer before the Olympics," said Ganga.

"Simple details like the distance from the venue to the Games village and the mode of transport are very important once the team arrive in Athens in August. The players will have a rough idea of what to expect.

"BAM are going for gold and it is vital that they do everything possible to make sure our players get an early advantage." The test matches will involve several top players from Europe including former All-England champion Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark. Misbun is also expected to get their feedback on the playing conditions at the Goudi Hall.

Malaysia will have their largest representation in badminton as nine players have qualified for the Olympics.

Wong Choong Hann, Roslin Hashim and Lee Chong Wei have qualified for the men's singles, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng will compete in the men's doubles while Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui are the first women's doubles pair to qualify for the Olympics.
