View Full Version : Memorable rally
bighook 06-20-2004, 08:23 PM I just thought I would share this one with you .I was playing doubles with Break My Strings at a community center .Anyways It was an intense rally with BMS hitting a dropshot to the left side and me following the straight net return with a straight net return tumble which was then returned with a cross net return which I barely got and was returned with a high straight net shot.I sort of smashed the return net shot cross and the bird bounced off the top of the tape with the net vibrating sideways and as the bird fell the vibrating net caught the bird sending it to the opponents side .Perhaps not as monumental as the balancing act Kwun did once(by the way I am still waiting for my turn to experience that one ) but it still brings a grin to my face when I think about it.Anyone else have moments like these?
hatecapletters 06-21-2004, 08:45 AM i dont know if this count, but last friday I manage (more by luck than anything else) a quite spectacular save:
We were playing a very evenly matched doubles, and at one point both my partner and I were enough out of position for our opponents to kill us with a drop shot on our left side. The drop shot was so well executed that it touched the tape slightly on its way down. For some reason (it was a very emotinal match ;) i refused to just concede the point and jumped tiger style for the shuttle, hoping to at least be able to lift the shuttel over the net, and hoping even stronger that my partner would be able to pick up the smash that was sure to follow. Somehow though, I got there early enough to be able to hit the shuttle cross. My stroke was actually too hard, but through magic (or luck, take your pick :) the shuttle, just before leaving the court on our right side, was stopped by the tape and tumpled down the other side landing on the line.
The rest of the week-end I could think of nothing else but that save - itøs moments like that which really makes me love this game !! :)
take care

LazyBuddy 06-21-2004, 09:35 AM I still can remember this rally, even it was about 2 months ago already:
In a very intensive double game, me and my partner were caught off balance during a rally. The opponent (at net) did a tight net drop on my right front corner. Both of us were either at the middle or beyond. This time is the "fighting spirit" to got popped out. I ran, slided on the floor, while on my side (right side), I extended my right arm, did some sort of wrist action, and flipped a perfect cross net drop, right before the shuttle hit the floor. The shuttle hit the tape, slided on for several inches, then rolled down on the other side (the above description is from various ppl who were watching the game). . The opponent was shocked, trying to tap it back, but only managed to hit the net. I was on the floor, hearing the cheer, as entire gym going nuts. Numerous ppl running on court, dragged me up and high five, and the manager was regretted for not bring in his camcorder. ;)

blckknght 06-21-2004, 12:12 PM there's always the nice situation where your opponent hits a net cord and says sorry right as you manage to return it just as perfectly...
SmashingBird 06-21-2004, 12:20 PM One of my memorable rally consists of me hitting a clear and the opposition team colliding and one guy hits his partner in the face with his racquet while going for the same shot resulting in a broken nose and 10 stitches but the important thing was they somehow manage to get the shuttle back over the net so I need a net shot and the guy with the broken nose ran and got it but he hitted it out.

So true, but most times were like I hit the cord, and said sorry, but only shocked with my mouth still wide open, as I saw they rushed from nowhere, and flipped back to my side.
Sliced Drop 06-21-2004, 03:19 PM During a friendly game, I turned my back and started running from the net after my partner had clattered a suicidally high net shot and my opponent was squaring up to drill towards China. As I turned I noticed the opponent set up to put it on my backhand so I swung my racket down past my right leg and somehow returned the smash. Unfortunately it was right back to my opponent and she killed it second time around, but none of us could believe that the first one went back the way it did.
Yipom 06-22-2004, 01:04 AM i remember for me, it was something like this
It was jus a friendly mix doubles game, last year. my friend Cleared it and my partner trying to clear back, but was only able to hit it to mid-court, so then i was thinking "He's gonna smash it Hard..." so then as he smashed it, i dont know why(mybe my instinct came) and i turned around and swung my racquet @ my backhand, and i manged to return that smash. Haha that was fun ^^
And this othertime, it was this MD game around 2-3 months ago. My oppenent did a bad drop shot, high and deep, so my partner went and smashed it. But one of my openent was in the front (he was only around 5") and he Turned around, and put his racquet on his back. and somehow, he returned it like a nice dropshot, my partner and i couldn't get it since, we were Shocked that he did it. Afterwards, my partner went up to him and gave him a Punch, and started telling him "omg how'd u get that, U little pok gu*(kidding of course)"
Good times good times
Sliced Drop 06-26-2004, 09:34 AM Wow I had another memorable shot on Wednesday. I'd struggled to get to a good net drop and dug deep to try and return it with a straight net drop.
For a while it didn't look as if the bird had enough pace to get over the net - it seemed to stall with the cork at the bottom edge of the tape. After what seemed an age the shuttle miraculously continued upwards and onto the top of the net, where it then sat lengthwise along the tape for another eternity before dropping onto the opponents side, completely un-hittable (Just as well really as he'd had a long time to get to it!)
In over 20 years of playing that was definitely the best net shot I've played.
jimbouk 06-28-2004, 10:10 AM We were playing an relatively unequal match and we managed to come back to win on a first to three basis from 13-5 down - best game iv'e ever played and the most enjoyable because of the win!!:D

Mass State 2004, WD winner, WS runner up. She plays a very physical game...yes she can smash. But that wasn't really a factor - my fluky return ended up as a mid-court lift!
