you know what this is right? this is our old BC server. i don't need to return it till the end of the month and there are quite a bit of bandwidth left. so i thought why not make use of it and benefit everybody! :)

Darn! Here I'm out of town and won't get back 'til the weekend. Maybe one of the Vancouver BF'er who has or will download the vids let me have a copy (I think I got most of the vids listed except for the last two). Actually for the Vancouver folks, I can make copies for you of the vids that I got.

Kwun, could you please write down the actual players that participate in each match or at least for the 80s matches?

So i see. I downloaded 3 files after reading kwun post at 850 kb/s.
Now, 2.5 hrs later, it's only 21 k/s :(

One part of it is a must read.

OK fellow people.. I GOT IT WORKING!! TO HELL WITH WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!!

Alright.. I got it running using Cyberlink Power DVD which was bundled with my DVD/ CD-RW drive. I think it'll run with intervideo dvd player too. Try going to http://www.intervideo.com

I got an alternative way to see the videos without installing anything.
That is, just burn them into VCDs..... :D so, I can even see them on my TV.

The 2nd last video AVSEQ01 is Yang Yang vs Zhao Jianhua as Kwun has already stated. The last video AVSEQ02 however, is a video of the 1991 World Cup Men's Singles Finals featuring Ardy Wiranata vs Zhao Jianhua.

7 point system was being tried for a year (forgot which year) but IBF later reverted back to 15 point system

Quite recently only (few years maybe)... but then the 7 point system was like 5 matches of first to 7. It was meant imho to try and put the europeans on equal footing with the asians, but then the asians who had better badminton physical attributes took it to their advantage and well you know the rest :D

I started going through the videos starting from the oldest. Han Jian's footwork is absolutely sluggish by the standards of pros today. Yang Yang and Zhao Jianhua is faster on court, but still not fast enough to go for round the head shots in the backhand corner. Despite his amazing reach, Ardy Wiranata doesn't seem to have a very smooth footwork. Lunges most of the time. But then again, watching Sony Dwi Kuncoro play, I find that the modern Indonesian singles player do not have the silk-like smooth footwork of modern Chinese singles players.

In the 1986 Thomas Cup semifinal, Yong Yu Bo of China appears to have the modern Chinese footwork. Especially when digging himself out of the deep shots to the forehand baseline corner. Very similar to the footwork used by Sun Jun in the Olympics. Did they have the same coach?

Also, it appears that in 1986 the Chinese have not perfected the footwork for getting behind the shuttle fast after forcing a lift from a tight net shot (the one that involves taking many small but quick steps instead of the usual few big backward strides). First saw this footwork in the video of Sun Jun playing in the Olympics, and then again in the video of Xia Xuanze playing in the WC '03.

All of these matches were previously available in swijaya's server. Most of the pre-1990 matches are mine except the last two dat files. Is there anyway to make more files available? I don't mind uploading some of my other files :) I know it's only about 5 days to go before the server is shut down but it maybe worth a shot considering the it can deliver at a very high speed.

The AVSEQs, the first one is YangYang V Zhao Jian Hua and the second is Ardy Wiranata V Zhao Jian Hua. This info is already provided earlier in the thread.

Thanks very much for the pointer. I can now play all but 4 using Media player. The first 4 files (84 WC MSSF, 87 MSF, XvsH g1) refused to play. Funny thing is XvsH g2 and g3 are playable.

Thanks again to 604badder.The reason why some files are not playable are because they were encoded using non-standard parameters. Use Cyberlink PowerDVD to play them instead because it is more tolerant to mpeg-errors. I haven't had any problems playing any of the mpeg files, both mpeg1 and 2.

Yup, I also used WinDVD to play the those files that hutoo had trouble playing. Give that a try hutoo.
