View Full Version : philippines badminton magazine. kwun 07-05-2004, 10:04 PM ran into this page: http://www.badmag.net/ anybody got a copy ? ants 07-05-2004, 10:33 PM Yup , i bought the first few copies.. about the content.. nothing much.. personally i think BCBF offer more stuffs. The magazine actually talks more about the local badminton scene in the phils. Can't really offer much for international readers. trojan7 07-06-2004, 12:29 AM ran into this page: http://www.badmag.net/ anybody got a copy ? I got the 2nd and 3rd issues. Contents are generally very good. It provides news on recent international tournaments, as well as national badminton events. It provides information on available courts all over the Philippines. It provides tips on playing and training for the game. It also has product information like how to spot fake yonex rackets and what to look for in badminton shoes. And others like what's in a drink like gatorade and similar products are also available. With this magazine, you could see how badminton has blossom into one of the favorite sports of Filipinos. Now all we need is government support to train players and have them play in international events even if just in south east asia (malaysia, indonesia, singapore), so the local players could be expose to top badminton games. ^_^x greenback 07-14-2004, 08:05 AM ran into this page: http://www.badmag.net/ anybody got a copy ? In the Philippines, there's a lot of them. It's such a big sport here that it's not unusual to spot actors and actresses in badmiton gyms. In one group I regularly play with, a former beauty queen plays badminton with us! btw, there's a small chance I'll be in the Bay Area this August on business. I'll try to bring some copies of the magazine. cooler 07-17-2004, 02:34 AM nice and flashy. Good place to showcase badminton players physique. :) Joseph 07-17-2004, 02:37 AM In the Philippines, there's a lot of them. Maybe we can all play badminton somewhere. tir168 07-19-2004, 06:31 AM damm, i am playing badminton in a wrong country here. :D oh well, anyone knows where i could get a copy here in Brunei? bigredlemon 07-19-2004, 10:12 PM Oh... wow.... it would be so cool if someone can hook us up with the pages :) ants 07-19-2004, 10:48 PM I will try to scan some of the pages over for you guys next time. Regarding the content.. nothing much.. basically about the same each month. Only few different articles. carlol 07-19-2004, 10:56 PM Man, do a lot of women who look like that play badminton? I must be playing in the wrong place... dude, i dunno if we're on the same page, but methinks that the women ur looking at are models, not real (not even recreational i bet) players... that is if ur looking at that section where the girl is posing around in different badminton outfits and gear. :p but still, badminton has become really big here in the phils and the hot chick ratio goes up along with the general playing population, so yeah, i guess there still a good chance of you seeing similar sights over here :D fr_topak 07-21-2004, 07:42 AM Website not updated. There's already a new issue out. Its improved a bit on the content. Will try to bring some in OCtober if i'm lucky to visit the Bay Area to. wilfredlgf 07-23-2004, 09:23 PM Not very sure if Ms Kelly Misa should be so 'well dressed' for a sports magazine. Now it's beginning to look more like a local men's mag like FHM or Loaded. This IMHO can actually alienate the female readers. The other cover, blue and yellow, definitely looked more professional. Ok, ok, the front cover is great ok! :);) Brave_Turtle 07-23-2004, 09:46 PM I want a copy!!! Can we get it oversea? bluejeff 07-25-2004, 04:28 PM Oh man, if all women look like that on the courts, I will be willing to throw lots of money opening my own courts and "enjoy"!! :D:D (That's like every man's dream:cool: ) eyesman 01-26-2005, 11:28 PM dude, i dunno if we're on the same page, but methinks that the women ur looking at are models, not real (not even recreational i bet) players... that is if ur looking at that section where the girl is posing around in different badminton outfits and gear. :p but still, badminton has become really big here in the phils and the hot chick ratio goes up along with the general playing population, so yeah, i guess there still a good chance of you seeing similar sights over here :D actually if this pertains to kelly, yes, her being a friend, neighbor and student of mine, she does play badminton. the badminton community is tight here in RP so its easy to check if a player/model does engage in the sport. Most of the models who showcase the sports fashion do play badminton. maybe not competitively, but at least recreationally... Anatolii 04-06-2005, 06:20 AM wow! a badm. mag sounds like a Dream mag *chuckles*! ants 04-06-2005, 11:35 AM For those Msians who wants a copy you can tell me. I can send some copies to you guys. But frankly speaking , nothing special about this mag. Anyway its better to have one than none. sessyargc 04-06-2005, 07:20 PM I do own several copies of this magazine :) I'm currently asking permission to repost one of my favorite articles here in BF. The article is about badminton's power couples, Chen Hong with Gao Ling and Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang. A very light and ammusing article, specially the interview with Chen Hong and Gao Ling. Philippine's very own top badminton players, Kennie and Kennevic Assuncion, made the interview. I do hope BadMag allows me to repost the article. sessyargc 04-06-2005, 07:31 PM For those Msians who wants a copy you can tell me. I can send some copies to you guys. But frankly speaking , nothing special about this mag. Anyway its better to have one than none. I tend to agree. It doesnt have racket reviews, and techniques articles. It does have a question and answer portion, a fitness section, a badminton-related medical section, and court reviews/features. Most of the international results printed are already old when you get to read the magazine :) Each issue is 2months worth of results and information. Its an ok read while waiting for a game or while riding the bus. Anatolii 04-06-2005, 07:35 PM I'm currently asking permission to repost one of my favorite articles here in BF. Badminton Philippines has allowed me to repost the article "Love badminton-style". Thank you to the editors of Badminton Philippines for allowing me to repost the article in BC. I love this article because it features Chen Hong and Gao Ling :) Enjoy. ===== Dear Mela, We're happy to oblige your request, especially since you're one of our loyal readers. Below is a copy of the article. Please include the copyright notice at the end of the article when you post the story at badmintoncentral.com. Yours truly, Ma. Liza A. Solano Managing Editor Badminton Philippines ------------ FLICK Love badminton-style By KENNIE ASUNCION Badminton Philippines gets an exclusive interview with China's power couples, Chen Hong and Gao Ling, and Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang—thanks to the intrepid duo of Kennie and Kennevic Asuncion. Love is in the air… It must be the month of February. Or is it badminton redefining its meaning in a different kind of partnership. Well, guess what, people? I was lucky to interview two of the hottest celebrity couples in the world of badminton at the recent Indonesia Open. But before I start, let me first say thank you to my bother, Vic, because he made this interview possible. For these players are his friends and he served as my photographer and interpreter. Lets get started then… The first couple needs no introduction. Their names send shivers down the spine of every opponent they face. Chen Hong and Gao Ling Knock! Knock! Chen Hong was expecting us and shouts: "Come in." He was seated on the bed of his hotel room in Jakarta, talking to a male friend, while Gao Ling was by the sink. Chen told me to start asking questions as he started to walk closer to me. He then jokingly said Gao Ling will answer my questions later because she was still busy washing his clothes, and he then laughed a bit—sort of teasing her. So I proceeded with the questions I had written down. Chen started playing badminton for health reasons. He used to have poor health as a young boy so his parents asked him to pick any sport he wanted just so he could be physically stronger. He picked badminton, loved it and just kept on playing. He reveals that becoming a singles player was not a choice. He says that is how all players start in China. They train to achieve the right form and stroke in singles. Then those who want to shift to doubles or mixed doubles can do so. His most memorable achievement was at the Sudirman Cup and World Championships 2004 because he was a finalist in both. Every time he plays in a tournament, his goal is always to be the champion. We then took a short break. Chen offered us cold chrysanthemum tea, which I really love but I was just too shy to take a cup. Gao Ling seems to be done with the laundry so she sat beside me and my attention shifted to her. Let me just say that Gao is indeed a very charming woman, glowing with a happy disposition. I told her that I would be asking the same questions I asked Chen. She then started saying she too started playing badminton for health reasons. Chen then interrupted her and teased her by saying, "Don’t go copying my answers!" and we all laughed a bit. I guess that is their way of being sweet to each other. By this time we were all relaxed and talking as if we were long-time friends. We talked about the sacrifices they had to make just to be where they are now. Chen says opportunities for socializing is very limited because of training and travelling. Gao tells us she left her province Hu Bei eight years ago and has never returned. Her parents come and visit her in Beijing where the Chinese national team trains. But it has definitely been worth it for she has two Olympic Golds to her name! She then describes in detail how differently she felt winning each gold medal. After winning her first gold, she just felt so happy, bubbly, and she was all smiles. "It’s like everything was just happy! Happy! Happy!" Getting the second gold medal was unexpected for her because she says that a lot of people kept on telling her how hard it would be and how they always lost to the Korean pair of Kim Dong Moon and Ra Kyung Min in earlier tournaments before the Olympics. But when the time came, they (Gao and doubles partner Zhang Jun) saw an opportunity to win and grabbed it! She felt mixed emotions of relief and joy after the game. I asked them what other sports they enjoy, and Chen says ping-pong, golf, other racket sports and horseback riding. I looked at Gao and her reaction was like "ummm"… and Chen teasingly said she does not like any other sport. All she likes to do is eat and sleep. Laughter filled the room once again. They both agreed though that they liked watching television and movies and shopping. So they do a lot of those with the rare free time that they get. They also like cellphones and watches. They love buying "his and hers" items like cellphones, bags and watches of the same brand. Our conversation became more exciting as we started talking about their relationship as a couple. They have known each other for more than ten years but they have only been together for about two to three years. They plan to get married this year. The lovebirds agree that it is a plus for them that they are in the same sport because they have common interests to talk about and they get to travel a lot together. In this situation, they understand each other better and can support each other more. They even share the same goals and aspirations. Lastly, Chen has this to say to all aspiring badminton players: we should make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. Meanwhile, Gao says we should never give up and we should go after our dreams. Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang Our second power couple is Lin Dan and Xie Xingfang who comes from Fijian and Guangzhou province. They have recently won the China Open 2004 in the men’s and ladies' singles. They are very alike in many ways. They are a perfect match as they both stand a towering 178cm tall. They even have the same body type. This couple is quite the opposite of Chen and Gao. As soon as I entered the room of Lin Dan, I could easily tell that they were not very comfortable with the interview and were very reserved. In fact, you could sense that if they could only back out they probably would have. But my brother promised them it would not take long, and if there were any questions they were not comfortable to answer then it would be all right not to answer them. As my brother and I sat down, Lin Dan offered us drinks while Xie Xingfang just sat by the bed watching Chinese DVDs. I again assured them that if in case there were any questions they would not want to answer, they can just say so and it would be okay. So Lin Dan then sat beside me and we started talking. This left-handed guy got into the sport by himself, and not for any particular reason. I guess it is just like any other kid who picks up a sport, stays there and eventually becomes a great player. He confesses though that it is hard to be where he is now because he has to be away from his family and he is not able to do what other guys his age could do. He went on to say that he believes that if you work hard for something, you will succeed. Take it from this guy, after all he has shown us by example exactly what he meant. His most unforgettable stint was the Thomas Cup. He believes that he was able to play his best at this event, so did the rest of his team and that made the victory so much sweeter. He is still very young (he turned 21 last October), and he hopes to one day win the Olympics and continue to win world grand prix titles. I then looked at Xie Xingfang and told her that I would be asking her similar questions. She is very shy and hardly looks at me straight in the eye. Her answers were pretty much one liners. I began to think at the back of my head: Is my Mandarin that bad that she could not understand me, or (I came up with a better thought) maybe she is just not as expressive. Nevertheless, I was grateful for the opportunity that she gave me to get to know her better. Xie Xingfang says she got into badminton because of her physical education teacher, and therefore, she would like to thank that teacher and all the coaches that helped her become who she is today. Since she had to be away from her parents for her training, she also learned how to be independent at a very young age. She usually just gets to see them once a year. That is why she is happy that for the next three years she can see them more than once. The China Open will be held in Guangzhou, her home province, for another three years. What usually happens is that before the competition starts, the players go to the place where the tournament will be held to train and get used to the climate, among other things. Aside from badminton, Lin Dan also enjoys playing football and a little tennis. And with a big smile, he declares that he also loves Thai food. Xie Xingfang loves to…. Surprise! Surprise! She loves to sing! When asked whether it is an advantage that they both play badminton, Lin replies that it does not really matter at all. He believes that it is between two people how they make their relationship work. When asked what future plans they have, all they could say was that we will definitely be seeing more of them because that is what they intend to do for the next few years—to continue playing badminton.
