I watched some classic videos. The guys tucked in their T-shirts circa 1989. Morten Frost, Yang Yang, etc. But look at it now, it is not.

I wonder when did they started to do that? Anyone?

when they discover it's 'cooler' with the shirt untucked;)

not only that.. less hassle to tuck the shirts in between points. I think it started in the mid 90's.

long long time ago, when i was in secondary school in the 80's, i remember reading a badminton book that says badminton attires must be majority white colored.

and lo and behold, all the players then always wear majority white colored shirt/shorts with color accents or patterns. thus i have always assumed that there is in fact such a IBF rule as that book i read told. can someone confirm this?

and if so, when was the rule removed? sometime in the mid 90s, i suppose?

I remember that the serving below the waist rule was in effect back then and in doubles the players used to tuck in their shirt and hike up their shorts to make the waist line harder to detect.Now the emphasis seems to be on the motion and below the whole of the hand for the service judge to look for.

It still is....

Sometimes if your top is tucked in it hinders twisting movement and just comes out of your shorts anyway.

One less thing to worry about.

Also the tops are shorter nowadays so there is less material to tuck into your shorts, how dare those companies put less material in the tops. Get them to knee length again I say :p

its now not more than 25% of floral prints on the T-shirts. Is there such a ruling too? Badminton attire gotta keep with changing needs.

Actually Kim Dong Moon still regularly tucks in his shirt

yup, it was still in effect in the mid to late 90's but not so strictly enforced as they realized the all white dress code didnt help much in popularizing the sport

i believe the rule is now 90% one colour

i know here locally at tournaments it went from all white dress to whatever you want now

Untill mid of 90's all the player's shirt/shorts/skirt must be majority white colored.
But only one tournament which stick on this rule, it is All England.

I have also a question :
In double (MD, WD and XD) should the 2 players in the same colored shirt/shorts/skirt ? If the answer is YES. So... how about they have a different sponsor ? Example : One Yonex and the other Carlton ?

"20.1 In all sanctioned events, including those organised by the IBF itself and multi-sport events, each article of clothing may be of any colour or combination of colours."

Also

"20.2 Team events
In all IBF team events ie Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, Sudirman Cup and World Junior Team Championships, players must wear team colours. That is, each player must wear the same colour and design of shirts and shorts (or equivalent articles of clothing)."

and

"20.4.4 In World Grand Prix events, it is mandatory for doubles partners to wear the same colour from the quarter finals onwards. It is recommended that, from the quarter finals onwards, the opposing pairs in each match wear different colours from each other."

(and there are analogous rules for different events)

I guess their open skin is not regulated? So may be tatoo can go?

I remember when I saw some badminton games back in 1992, there were still players tucking their shirts in. I guess it happened after that though.

I think a player looks smarter if he has his shirt tucked in. If it is not tucked in, the upper body looks a bit too long and the lower trunk too short. Soccer players still play with tucked shirts.
