"One is not wise to stand in the centre when he has served to the opposition, one ought is slant more towards the side where you have just served to"

Other than defending a smash, i was able to lob back more effeciently as most of the time my opponent lobs straight.

What other usefulness are there following this theory?

If you have been taught to play by a caoch or even studied top level playing the percentages are that the shuttle will always go in a straight direction from one corner up the sidelines to the opposing corner or downwards in a smash. If you serve you should stand just inside the cetre line to whichever side you have hit the serve to, even in your game you should do this depending on where you hit the shuttle to, if you push it out to the side the chance is it is coming back straight down the line and you narrow the choices to clear, drop or smash and you are at least in the right side of the court to retrieve it.

If you watch doubles this is even more obvious when both players are in the same side of the court looking as if they are leaving the other half undefended when playing front and back.

If I am not mistaken, Gong Zhichao always did that right? She never used to stand in the middle after serving...
