Actually i think Xiong Guobao is right handed because on a VCD (Master Skills from Mr. Xiong Gaubao) he seems to be playing with his right hand.

Really? I have heard that Zhao Jianhua was a very streaky player... he's almost invincible when he's good, but average on his offdays. Yang Yang, on the other hand, was more consistent throughout his career.

Yeah, I got a training vcd featuring Xiong Guobao. The guy's a righty.

Oh dear. I stand corrected. Must be my memory then
It seems my memory still working sometimes http://www.badmintonforum.com/vb/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. Now that Xiong is right handed then Zhang Chingwu another player from that era should be left handed.

It's true that Zhao Jianhua was not consistent in tournaments but that was mainly due to his health. According to sources close to the Chinese camp, Zhao never fully recovered from the pneumonia he contracted in 1985. If he felt good he was just unbeatable at that time, otherwise he could lose to a much lower ranked player.

Not as much as I know. I mean they are just reversed/mirrored cmp with a righthanded, so physically there shouldn't be any differance.

But.....depending on how the opponents shot is played it might be that a leftie will get in other positions, thus being able to hit in angles a righthanded won't have a chance to do. Since I'm righthanded myself and most of the time play against righthanded I'll play high balls (lifts/clears) into certain positions, often their backhand, but when meeting a leftie this will be *his/her* forward....you see were I'm going?!

there's something about the direction in which the shuttle spins, and the slicing in reverse to what right handers can do means that some shots are not the exact reflection of the right handers' shot.

Its true they will not be an exact copy, as the shuttle only spins one way due to the way the feathers are shaped (unless you can get lefthanded shuttles lol!)

I dont know of any research that shows how this can affect the stroke/quality. Any budding Phds out there fancy a badminton related topic?!! Cheung!?!!(always room for another!) we could call you doctor doctor, like the jokes!

most people say that lefties have a better angle bcoz of something to do with the feathers (don't know what tho:D :o ) ;) :)

purpledoi
11-04-2006, 04:53 AM
But if lefties have an angle advantage on the righties, won't the righties have the same on the lefties?

What more, the head of the shuttlecock is round...so...What exactly would make it fly faster, go down harder, have better angles if you were to hit it from the left side?

As of right now, I agree that he is currently the best left-hander in singles...but for all time singles players, it must be Zhao Jianhua. His deception, power and placement were so amazingly accurate and devestating to his opponents. If Zhao Jianhua of the early 1990's were playing right now against LD, PG, TH, LCW, etc, I humbly think he would destroy them all in similar fashion he did with most of his opponents back then.

Winning all the timas doesn't mean he's the best plyr right?? Taufik matches him... And, soon, I think Andre Kurniawan Tedjono can too.. Although it'll take some time.. Chen Jin...?

Really? I have heard that Zhao Jianhua was a very streaky player... he's almost invincible when he's good, but average on his offdays. Yang Yang, on the other hand, was more consistent throughout his career.

Yeah, I got a training vcd featuring Xiong Guobao. The guy's a righty.in 1998, Zhao JH beat yang yang in MS final:)

agree, Zhao Jian Hua is well known for his deception, while Lin Dan is very powerful in smash.

Zhao Jianhua's on court speed is not necessarily slower than Lin Dan's. Personally I think he is even faster and technically superior compared to Lin Dan.

Zhao Jianhua was also nicknamed by the media/players then as Zhao 'kaboom'. It pretty much tells you his offensive prowess. Zhao is always said to be a very deceptive player, but in my opinion I don't consider him as such.

His technique is excellent, which makes his intentions hard to read/anticipate by his opponents. This aided by his superior court coverage skills and athleticism, he was able to place the shuttle in places considered impossible to most of the players.

Disagree.
I don't think Zhao Jianhua could follow the speedy games nowaday.
He smoked and his stamina was terrible.
Anyway don't be serious as no one could find the right answer!:confused::confused:

In terms of sports of badminton which doesnt has a scientific parameter for measurement like 100m, high jump & long jump. It is impossible to judge players of different era.

The only possible way is to meausre medal won by those players but it wont be fair as well because before the 80s the are few competition and not all country can afford to send their player to compete. While after the 80s, the competition those average player provide to star players arent as stiff as currently.

I guess it's impossible to compare, all we can do is just acknowledge all their contribution to badminton.

But I still think today top players can beat players of yesterday because of few factors.

profesional, player nowadays trains day & night and paid well. concrentrate on badminton alone. Definately got higher fitness level.
Learn from the past, they got the chance to learn from the past player thus use the most effective technique, skills, strategy & etc. Eliminating unnesseary traininng.
Technology, better racquet, video play back.Just my 2cents

Dude, Park is right-handed!

Also I suggest ppl watch ZJH's 1985 AE final. Fast, agile, with both power and fine touch, great placement, he got it all. I believe if he hadn't been ill, with his understanding of the game around 1990 (when he reaches his peak), he can beat any of LD, TH, PG, etc easily. But unfortunately he had been ill...

That said, I heard that, in 1997, ZJH played 7 points games with the JiangSu province team (to prepare for the All China Games), and he beated all opponents easily, including Sun Jun. Also, paired up with Zhang Jun for MD, they won all matches in the group event; paired up with Sun Man, they won the XD gold medal (Not sure about this one, since I only see it in one place and could not find this source anymore). Zhang Jun recalled that ZJH's movements & strokes are so mesmerizing that he sometimes would forgot what he should do and just watched ZJH in awe.

So, as always, ZJH is the best!!! :)
