Hi:

I left a voice message on your cell phone. I will be there for probably semi and final matches. Hopefully, we can see some good players around the world. Last year I have seen lots of junior players.

See you then.

Thanks.

The draw has been published on http://www.worldbadminton.net

There are quite a few surprises including Tony Gunawan competing in singles!

Halim Haryanto is playing in doubles with Thomas Indrajaya  (there are quite a few "unknown" Indonesians competing)
Also Heryanto Arbi is competing in doubles, is he the one we all know??

Anyway, the big clash should be Ronald Susilo vs Peter Rasmussen in the second round!

No reactions to the draw?

not a very exciting draw, unfortunately.

being so close to the Dutch/Danmark/German triple, most top players aren't coming for the US open. being 1* also doesn't help the cause. i cannot wait till when the US Open goes back to being a 5* event!

but i think the top match would be Susilo vs. Peter Rasmussen as pointed out. Susilo has made a mark by winning the JO and also beating Lin Dan in the Olympics. many eyes will be on him.

also another interesing part is that Tony Gunawan is playing with Howard Bach. this mark the retirement of Kevin Han and to be honest, i think the Gunawan/Bach pair will go much further than the Han/Bach pair.

Was it ever 5*?

yeah. before the Asian financial crisis, they managed to attract very good sponsorship and it was 5* then. but lately it has only been a small 1* tournament.

Though it is not specially exciting there are a few surprises including Halim Haryanto's (presence and) partnership and Heryanto Arbi (the same one?)'s presence in both doubles...
Has anyone got any more information about this?

Though it is not a 5*, I think it is interesting to follow even so...

i was actually debating if it were interesting enough to drive 7 hours to go watch... but then janet told me that we have a wedding to go to that weekend. i guess that made my choice easier...

7 hours!
Well, I suppose that's the distance I am from Paris too...
Anyway, you can still follow the early rounds online (the second round should be the most interesting normally ;) )

Why is Halim partnering another person ? Has he split up with Candra

I hope so, then probably I can see the return of Sigit and Candra. They should come back once more and win the World Championships next year.

Is there any indonesian fan who could give us informations about all these Indonesians? Including Halim's new(?) partner?

There are 8 Indo Players participating at this year US Open. They are as follows :

Heryanto Arbi partnering with Lioe, Tiong Ping for MD
Heryanto Arbi partnering with Angelina De Pauw for MX

Angelina De Pauw & Eny Erlangga for WD
Eny Erlangga & Halim Heryanto Ho for MX

Halim Heryanto Ho & David Pohan for MD

Halim Setio Haryanto & Thomas Indrajaya for MD

It appears to me these are mostly ex national players who have retired from PBSI except maybe Halim Heryanto Ho.

I am confused who is the famous HALIM?Halim Heryanto Ho or Halim Setio Haryanto?

I can see halim's full name is Halim Haryanto in the IBF's world ranking. So Halim Setio Haryanto must be the famous HALIM?

Otherwise ,Halim Setio Haryanto & Thomas Indrajaya is the 8th seeds, if Halim Setio Haryanto is not the famous Halim, the pair can't be seeds.

Exactly, he is the former single number one. BUt at this Open he is just playing for fun .... only MD and MX events. In fact, i just met and chit chatted with him last night at OCBC. The "gang" just got back from Las Vegas. There are 9 ex national players coming from Indo. I am afraid this players might cause upsets in all the events they play in. Just wait and see !!!

Arbi Heryanto partnering with Angelina De Pauw lost their first round match against a Canadian Team (Milroy & Tammy Sun) in a three set match. They both did not seem to play well together; most of the time, Angelina was in the back doing the attacking while Arby was covering the front/net area. Lots of unforced errors in the part of Arby; he looked a bit rusty from not playing at the competitive level for so long. I dont know how well he will do in MD in this afternoon.
Halim Haryanto & Erny Erlangga won their 1st Round MX pretty easily.
Tony Gunawan lost his bid for the Single Match against a younger player from Chinese Taipei in a three setters 14-17, 15-0, 15-10. Tony appeared to be hitting lots of shots on the double lines/alleys. Plus he looked like he was out of gas on the second game because during the first game really, the Taiwanese has already emptied out his gas tank. On the second game, Tony was playing with almost emptied tank. In the 3rd deciding set, he tried to come back but the younger player played so smart by running him around and let the shuttles rallied longer ..... so it was a dramatic ending of the game. Tony looked disappointed after the game. I just hope it will not effect his bid for the first player to win his 3rd consecutive US Open champion 3 times in a row. I am keeping my finger cross

As I know, the famous Halim is :

Halim is first name
Ho is family name
Halim Haryanto or Halim Heryanto is boy's name

I'm also confused with Haryanto or Heryanto like Haryanto Arbi or Heryanto Arbi.

Another Halim is Setyo Haryanto Halim (Halim is his family name)

So famous Halim have partner with David Pohan, I thaught any mistake in seeded MD draw.

I was told that david pohan is the brother of jimmy pohan who used to be number 1 singles in the US and also was some jr champ back in indo. I heard David is very good indeed.

Well I have my answer : Heryanto Arbi's level in doubles is NOT brilliant judging on the results :o
He did win his first round match in MD however...

Annoying that only half of yesterday's results are updated on the site...

About both Halim's, it seems that IBF got mixed up then, because they seeded the unknown Halim instead! :p

Lili Zhou is from Mainland China province of Kwong Chou. She used to be in the same provincial team with Zhou Mi but was dismissed due to the height problem. She is an exceptional single player. While Johanna Lee is an ex Korean Women National player now she is a part time student and part time coach for junior player here in the US. (Southern California)

I was fortunate to be there and watched the semis. Here is the round up.

Peter Rasmussen vs Nicholas Kidd

Peter totally dominated Nicholas. This is one sided game. Peter was fast and furious. My prediction; Peter will take up first single.

Lee Yen Hui Kendrick vs Joachim Fischer Nielsen

Didn't really follow the game much.

Lili Zhou vs Susan Hugues

Lili played well. Beating Hugues. Her shots were accurate and precised. Prediction; Lily will take first WS.

Johanna Lee vs Xing Aiying

I think Johanna Lee is little over the hill for this game. Aiying won in two sets. I over heard Aiying is only 15. She has everything- drops, powerful smash, slice. Her legs was huge and she is well developed. Aiying is definately someone i will keep my eyes on.

Halim Haryanto (the "real" one?)/David Pohan vs Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen

Halim played well but his partner were weak. David could not keep up. He couldn't defend the opponent smashes and his game was definately belong in the lower class.

Jesper Larsen/Joachim Fischer Nielsen vs Howard Bach/Tony Gunawan

Howard and Tony took the first game with ease. Howard played very well. His defense was good. It seemed like their opponent could not get their smashes through. I am pretty sure they were picking on Howard but he returned with good defense and powerful smashes. Tony was good as always.

Chen Wen Hsing/Chien Yu Chin vs Li Yujia/Jiang Yanmei

I love this game. If i were to give an award for most exiting game. This would be it. The rallies were long and intensive. A lot of ohhhsss and awes.

Liza Parker/Suzanne Rayappan vs Ku Pei Ting/Chou Chia Chi

Ku Pei Ting is one hot girl. she played well and mostly controlled the game. Ku and Chou moved fluidly. Prediction; Ku/Chou will take first WD.

David Lindley/Suzanne Rayappan vs Halim Haryanto/Eny Erlangga

David/Suzanne took the game with ease. Halim couldn't do anything because they were attacking at Suzanne. Alot of time Halim has to take the front and back. Poor Halim, he must of frustrated with Suzanne. She made too many mistakes.

Kevin Han/Yun Peng vs Lin Wei Hsiang/Cheng Wen Hsing

Didn't really follow. I have one word for Kevin. RETIRE!

Well i think his main focus is still his study because that will be for his future. But now since 05 Worldchampionship is here next year, i think he will try to capitalize it since he still has some miles left on him. Other main reason is I guess he tries to bring US Badminton on the world map as some thing to reckon with. It is like something he would like to give back to his second adopted country. By doing so, hopefully it will increase the popularity of the sports and subsequently get more big "guns" or corporations to look at the sport of badminton that definitely carry the biggest potential market in the US.

RETIRE!

It is amazing to watch Xing Ai Ying's (15 yo) game. Her physique is so built up and strong for a girl of only 15. She reminded me of Mia Audina esp when she did the overhead shots. The way her body curve/bent and she can still smash or do attacking clear back deep into opponent back hand. I love her overhead slice drop shot. Her whole body is so flexible. After the game, i saw her wrapping her elbow around with some sort compression. JUst to reserve her arm for the final game which will be a bit tougher than the semi. Even Lili is from China, but her style of play is not typical of China Style. She plays more like Indonesian style ...... I heard that she had a badminton friend from Indonesia who gave her some tips while she was younger. Her style is more like attacking and precision placement. From the preliminary rounds, she totally dominated her opponents by her style of plays. You should see how she made her opponents so frustrated being completely unable to read her shots. Even Susan Hughes from Scotland who totally destroyed Eva Lee could not develop her game. Lili just yoyoed her at will ........It was kind of fun to watch when she does that .................

Fook90, shame on you ! US Open is NOT a "A" grade tournament. It is a 1*star Grand Prix Event ! Else why you think Peter Rasmussen took part ? Anyway, Kendrick did not ask Peter Rasmussen to get injured what ! Why did Peter R injured himself during the game ? Because he was trying to retrieve Kendrick's difficult shot ? Considering that Peter R had been having easy matches until this Final match. You cannot take the credit away from Kendrick Lee. What a lousy loser you are !

Well, I'm happy for both Kendrick and Aiying and I think they thoroughly deserved to be champs despite what others may say. They both trained very hard as I've seen them in training not too long ago.

I personally like the attitude of Aiying as she never fails to put on a smile. Aiying and the other girls have been given English lessons and I understand that she is learning fast. She used to act as interpretor for Sari to convey their Chinese coach's Mandarin instructions. Her doubles partner, Sari, from Indonesia, maybe slightly older than her, might have exchanged the different things they learned from their respective 'home' coaches and Aiying thus displayed the harder hitting style that she may perhaps learned from her good friend, Sari. But, because Aiying is trained mainly as a doubles players, her strokes have to be more attacking. Furthermore, the last time I saw them, they were usually sparred against the Indonesian men twins, Benny & Danny, who were also on the SBA payroll.

On the Aiying-Sari doubles partnership, I was again disappointed that they couldn't advance further. They also failed in the Asian Satellite Open in Singapore. After this tournament, I had a chat with their Chinese coach in my limited Mandarin to actually tell him my views of their play. I think that the girls' partnership was based too much on 'power' with too many hard-hitting shots. This became too obvious to the opponents and once they were able to counter the Singaporeans' attacks, it was a matter of time that their opponents would prevail. The Singapore girls should vary the pace and style by introducing softer touches like more drops and net play as well as more precision shots to open positions instead of repeatedly hammering the poor bird. Aiying has proven she can use her brains by beating all the other women in her path, she should use this same gift in her doubles.

It is unfortunate that Peter Rasmussen was injured and thus couldn't continue. But I think we should not take the credit from Kendrick in this one-star (not A Grade nor Satellite, please) event. We all know that Peter is no pushover, having been a World Champion before and for him to be injured against Kendrick says something of the difficult shots that he was being pushed to return. You will see more of Kendrick in more major events and he
will prove that his current success is no fluke!

And the success of these two young shuttlers will keep the current badminton 'frenzy' in Singapore on 'high alert' with the intensity building up towards the 5-star "Aviva Singapore Open 2004" in mid-November. All Singaporean eyes will follow the progress of our young stars, including Ronald Susilo and Li Li, and I believe this year will bring in a record crowd, surpassing the 23,000 we saw last year.

Cheers and congrats to Kendrick and Aiying and may they play better badminton in the coming years! :) :p :D

Give them both a little time to gain some playing mileages or flying hour. Because both of them are merely 15 & 16 respectively still quite young. But it is amazing to see how much they have achieved in the US Open, a 1 star event. Not too bad........ I was lucky enough to be able to watch the match betweeen PR n Kendrick. PR was actually a class better imho. He was leading 12-1 in the first set, when something obviously happened to him. His movement was not as fast. And Kendrick was then able to catch up to 12-7, before PR withdrew. He seems to be walking weird after, and he was holding his chest as he sat down.

With due respect and in all fairness, I don't think one should classify both of Kendrick's win as 'lucky'. Despite having to serve National (military) Service, this young man of 19 going on 20, has put in a lot of hard training with the rest of the national team and his mentor and sparring partner, Ronald Susilo.

At the Satellite, he beat Kuan Beng Hong in straight games. Kuan is no newcomer having earned his place as Malaysia's Thomas Cup 3rd Singles reserve after Lee Chong Wei. Remember Kuan beat compatriot Yeoh Kay Bin, who was top seed. Although Peter Rasmussen is a much higher ranked player and former World Champ, his is already 30 and the first game may have proven too much for him to cause an injury. Even if he succeeded in taking the first game despite Kendrick's strong recovery from 1-12 down as reported, it doesn't necessarily mean he will win comfortably in straight games. We have seen many a time how another great Dane, Peter Gade, lost when extended to the rubber by a younger player such as Lin Dan or Taufik. So Kendrick deserved his win. :)

Yes, we celebrate Singapore's singles double and sports journalist, Marc Lim of the Straits Times took the opportunity to report it today as follows:

SEPT 27, 2004

Singapore's singles double

Teens Kendrick and Aiying win men's and women's titles at US Open

By Marc Lim

THEY are teenagers considered second-rung compared to Singapore's top badminton players Ronald Susilo and Li Li.

But yesterday, Kendrick Lee, 19, and Xing Aiying, 15, showed there is more to Singapore badminton than their more illustrious team-mates.

The pair clinched the men's and women's singles titles at the US$30,000 (S$50,000) US Open in California to join Susilo, winner of April's five-star Japan Open, as Singapore's only Grand Prix champion.

Although the US Open is a one-star event - the lowest ranked on the circuit and usually without the top names - they had to overcome higher-ranked finalists in Denmark's ex-world champion Peter Rasmussen and American Zhou Lili.

And it was evident from telephone interviews hours later that, one-star or not, nothing was going to take away the gloss from their wins - although they celebrated in contrasting styles.

For 2002 World Junior runner-up Lee, it completed his transition from satellite tournaments to the Grand Prix circuit.

And the first people he shared his happiness with were his parents.

Said Lee, who was declared winner after Rasmussen retired with an injured ankle despite leading 12-7 in the first game: 'They are the ones who have been encouraging me all along, supported my decision to quit my studies.

'Hearing them say 'well done' means a lot to me.'

His success is extra special - as Susilo is Indonesian-born, Lee becomes the first Singapore-born winner on the international circuit.

Ranked 46th in the world, the former Singapore Polytechnic student scalped All-England quarter-finalist Aamir Ghaffar en route to a US$2,400 showdown with 1997 world champion Rasmussen.

Lee had never faced the 30-year-old Dane and sought advice from Susilo, his team-mate turned part-time coach.

Susilo's tip was to employ a quick game and move the ageing Dane about. And it was such a rally, with Lee trailing 6-12, that turned the match.

Said Lee: 'I forced him back and won the point at the net and that was when he stopped. He said that he heard a 'click' from his ankle and could not continue.'

Asked if he could have won if Rasmussen had stayed fit, the Singapore and Thailand satellite winner said: 'Possibly, because I was fighting back. But I'll take it.'

Like Lee, Xing also wanted to share her joy with her parents in China's Jiangsu province. But the Singapore permanent resident could not.

She explained: 'I had used up the credits on my calling card the previous night when I spoke to my parents.

'Before I hung up, my dad said that, since it was my last day, there was no point buying a new one. So, I guess the good news will have to wait until I borrow someone's card.'

Having never progressed past the second round on the circuit, her 9-11, 11-6, 11-2 win over Zhou came as a surprise.

And the inexperience of playing in a final cost her the first game.

Although up 9-5, her anxiety and eagerness saw her hand the American the opener.

But, with coach You Guangli's advice to use her better fitness and move her opponent around, she fought back to take the winner's cheque of US$2,070.

Yet, as she and the Singapore team head for the Denmark Open today, she will have one regret.

She said: 'The badminton hall is near Disneyland and I keep seeing this giant Mickey Mouse every time we drive past.

'It's a pity I can't go, but I'd rather win the tournament than go to Disneyland.

'Maybe with the prize money, I will settle for a soft toy.'

There's really no need at all for that tone of voice.

My remark was based on b0urg301s13's first-hand report of the match. He felt there was a class difference between these players. This has nothing to do with "european player nuthugging".

But indeed, anything is possible. Even coming back after 1-12. We will just never know, will we? :p

What we do know, however, is that Kendrick will have many opportunities to show that this was no fluke. Best of luck to him!

I was at the US Open and came home with mixed feeling. I enjoyed the woman's singles and doubles finals. The match between Lili Zhou and Xing were good to watch again if anyone has recorded the event. Lili plays in my club regularly and I think she ran out of gas after the first game.

Women's doubles were impressive too as both pairs from Taiwan put up a tough fight, and most of all, both team were more balance. The rallies were longer and more entertaining compared to the mixed doubles and mens doubles.

Mens singles, kind of disappointing. When PR withdrawed in the middle of first match, everyone was wondering what was going on. The organizer did not even explain what happened to him. My friends and I were all pretty upset with the organizer, hey, this is not a free event, we each paid $25 to see the tournament. At least there should be an announcement what was going on.

Mens doubles was pretty boring, as it was obvious the US pairs could take the Danes easily. It is not balance, one side is much stronger than the other and there was hardly any rallies.

I went to see most of the matches during this year's US Open. Quite a
surprise to not see Ronald Susilo play.

One thing I noticed, is probably the making of a new Women Single star
in the form of Singapore Women Single's player, Xing AiYing. Boy oh boy
does she look calm and poise or what. She is very consistent in her
play, techniques and demeanor. And at such a young age, barring any major
injuries, she has a very bright future. If she can make it and qualify
for next year's World Championship, I won't be surprise to see her
succeed and go far, considering how young she is. Too bad she chose to play
for S'pore over China, I don't know why. If she does play Women's
Double, with Shinta Sari, I would recommend Xing AiYing to just concentrate
on the Women Single field. I don't know anyone or many player that can
succeed playing Single and or Doubles/Mixed at the same time. Women's
Single is her specialty. Lili Zhou has no chance, IMO, she is one level
below Xing plus add her age also which is more than Xing.

As far as the Indonesian players, yes David Pohan is Jimmy Pohan's
brother. Yes, I'm Indonesian. I believe David Pohan is a coach @ Djarum
Club in Indonesia. He came here cos he got his visa last minute. Him
playing Men's Single is also last minute as Haryanto Arbi had to pull out
from the Men's Single(H. Arbi is DEFINITELY out of shape). He and
Angeline De Pauw lost in the MX cos they never practice. There are 8 players
from Indonesia(6 men and 2 women) and all of them are over the hill and
out fo shape players. Basically like someone mentioned, they are
ex-national players and they all come to play for fun(some went to Las Vegas
prior to the tournament). One of them, Eny Erlangga is out of the
national team and she told me she is considering moving here to the U.S. So
is Halim Heryanto and his wife. Last I heard they are interested in
moving to the U.S. and were discussing somekind of deal with Don Chew(I
believe on one night in the restaurant with Tony), but heard the sal!
ary wasn't "enough", around only $30,000(I guess Don wants to hire him
to coach also for the U.S. team). So I don't know what the progress is.

As for the U.S. becoming a badminton "power", it will take a lot of
sacrifice and a loooot of work. They are on the right course, esp. with
Tony coaching and playing with Howard, but they need more than that. Even
if Halim joins Tony as coach/player in U.S., it's still not enough. The
U.S. has a lot of "ideal" players to play this sport(esp. since
Americans tend to be tall and lengthy). But for some reason the image of it
needs to change. I don't know how it will change but it will take a lot
of work. Even if Tony and Howard play for the U.S. next year @ the WC,
the marketing will be hard as badminton is already known as an Asian
game and to a certain extent European. This next 2 tournament for Tony and
Howard(Dutch and Denmark Open) should gauge how far they can go for
next year-hope the best for them.

I think the only way for the U.S. to garner badminton is to import
international players. Imagine the top players from Indonesia/China move to
the U.S., that would be a big shift in power. Especially the U.S. can
provide more "incentives" than most countries. If that's not feasible,
then another way is to send the U.S. players overseas to either train or
play in Asian/Europena countries(ie. Indonesia, China, Korea, Malaysia,
Denmark). It just depends on how much the USBD wants to invest in.

Well, enjoyed this year's tournament, eventhough it's not as exciting
as last year's and the year before(w/ Peter Gade). The Men's Double was
a doozer, no match at all. All I can say is as long as Tony plays, good
luck to the other team. Anyway, can't wait for next year's WC, it
should be really fun(I really want to see Taufik play vs. Lin Dan) and see
all the top players play and give it their best. Who knows maybe Tony
and Howard can go all the way to the final and maybe win it all(hehe)-;).

Thanks Kwun for this new member's views.

I have profiled Xing Aiying in another post under "US Open Winners" and gave some reasons as to why Singapore chose Aiying in its foreign talent programme.

Maybe the new member is not aware of the circumstances. Aiying has no chance in China. China didn't want her when she wanted to play professionally, not even her own home province, Jiangsu, all because she was considered "too short". Singapore has always been on the lookout for suitable teenage candidates to nurture and develop into champions.

Aiying got the nod from the selectors and was put through an appropriate training programme in the hands of qualified and experienced coaches from China who are under the employ of the SBA. She was then barely 13 going on 14. Now 15, she has grown taller and stronger, fitter and faster and I believe that's why Lili Zhou couldn't match up to the young and vibrant, though inexperienced Aiying. Sure, Singapore will continue to develop and exposure her to be the best she could. If she can remain committed in her training, I agree that she will become very good, perhaps better than Li Li.

Her 16 year old doubles partner, Sari, from central-Java, who lost to her 8-11, 8-11 in the same tourney, is also another good potential and both good friends are very hardworking and motivated. I hope Sari can go far too. As to whether they should concentrate on playing singles only and break up their doubles partnership, I think this is too early to tell as they are still young. In any case, they enjoy playing together and motivating each other. Their coach will be able to decide in due course.

BTW they both look forward to becoming Singapore citizens to follow the footpath of bigger brother, Ronald Susilo and 'bigger' sister, Li Li. :)

this was sent to me by a new member ctjcad:

I did not know you were there at the OCBC; otherwise i would've loved to meet you there. I was there sitting down trying to find out how would i meet the BFers among so many spectators. I didnot know that you are an Indo; i kept on thinking you are Malay-Chinese. Next time when you come down here again, please let me know. I would love to meet you and say hi.

BTW, Rudy Gunawan has asked me to help him run an Open tournament at OCBC (Prize money is $ 2300.00). It will be called "Champion in Christ Badminton Tournament" date Dec 4, 04 (Maybe thru Dec 5th, if needed).
Maybe you can bring some along players from Nor Cal to participate.

not to downgrade Lili Zhou or anything, but i guess Xing didn't have to face a "world-experienced" player. It will be interesting though to see how she fare and does in the Denmark Open, how far she'll go. Maybe the US Open win will provide her somekind of a boost. As far as her playing doubles, true it's still not out of the question, but the reality is most players I know, doesn't have enough success playing singles and doubles/mx at the same time. Heck, not many top world players can do that. The point is, Xing is still very young and her future is very bright.

Kwun is not Indo.I'm Indo. Yah, I overheard about Rudy Gunawan's event, he was discussing it with Tony/Halim on the 1st day of the US Open. I don't know what he's plan is, but I guess somekind of a social event which relates to his church(he's a pastor also). I don't know if the event is free or not. And who are the sponsors.

I agree. Obviously the US Open did not attract the more experienced women players like Kanako Yonekura of Japan, then ranked world No. 10, who participated in a satellite event, the Iran Open in Tehran in February. She was beaten by our own Li Li, 11-9,11-6 in the quarter-finals as Li Li needed the points to qualify for the Olympics, whereas Yonekura need not.

Aiying will obviously not have a chance in a 5* event like the Danish Open but it will be interesting to know how far she can advance. Even for the more experienced and older Li Li, she only managed to show her ability during her first round Olympics match against world No.1 Gong Ruina, after having been exposed to the international circuit for a much longer time. She stretched Gong in the first game by leading something like 9-7, but succumbed thereafter. As I have said earlier, even Aiying's victory at the US Open was a pleasant surprise. Nobody expected her to win at her first attempt in a 1* event.

So, I hope Aiying will not get the wrong ideas and think she has already arrived. That will be the start of her downfall! She should take her recent win as an incentive to train harder and qualify to participate in more demanding GP events. ;)
