View Full Version : BC gathering at the Singapore Open 2004
Janet and I will be attending the Singapore Open this year. we are planning to arrive on Friday and leave on Sunday. as there are many members from Singapore and surrounding areas, i propose we all sit together, chat about badminton, and lastly but not least, make a lot of noise cheering for our favorite players.
and we will corner JR, TL and whoever else in the Danish team and have them sign autographs for us or cheer along with us. :)

Hi Kwan,
Welcome to S'pore. Do you plan for any game session while you are here :) , I can see that your schedule is quite tight  .
i dont he wont be able to have a game.. he have other relatives with him as well. or maybe he can ... :) anyway what say you kwun.
hello, i am not sure what exactly our schedule will be like, but i do know that it will be tight. :)
i wouldn't mind some badminton if there is some available, will there be groups who are playing during that weekend with the ongoing Singapore Open?
kwun, could you ask Loh to arrange the gathering?
Loh? you have been volunteered. :)
there are some logistics that we need to figure out, i have seen pictures of the SIS in previous years. there seems to be some empty spots. how do we ensure we can get our own seats for all the BC'ers? may need more volunteers to get there early to camp out for the space ahead of time.
we also need identifcation for the group. a flag of some sort? i will try to make the banner. but the flag will be much more noticable.
we also need to get a poll of number of ppl going to the singapore open.
i have created a poll. if you are planning to attend the Singapore Open, please respond to the poll...

Bought season ticket and will be there for sure--well after work anyway. If you want to play on the Saturday morning, I have some Indonesian friends I play with 10-12 a.m. in west of Sg. We play mostly doubles though and waiting time could vary depending on how many courts we can book.

As you have noted, Janet and Kwun will be visiting us during the last few days of the S'pore Open, namely on Fri,19 (maybe), Sat 20 (Semis) and Sun 21 (Finals, normally played in the afternoon) before they fly off on the same evening, I hope.
Are you all keen on making it a memorable visit for our dear "newly-wed" couple, especially during their attendance at the SIS for the matches. If you are interested in joining the fun, could you please PM me with your ideas and be present at the SIS to block off the seats (since it is free seating) so that we can all group together under the 'banner' of Badminton Central.com and be counted.
Objective: To create a lot of noise and fun and publicise our BF image.
How to achieve our aims:
1. Make coloured flash cards of reasonable size containing the letters of our BF name as suggested above. This is to take the place of a long banner which may not be practical because of size and cost. Size should be manageable, like foolscap size, which can be carried and put into our backpack. Depending on our numbers, a BFer can carry and display maybe three letters, joiined together with tape and foldable.
2. Fun Noise. Apart from our own vocals, we should either bring along noise making contraptions or make them ourselves. Some of you may still possess the musical hangouts given at National Day Parades like the hand drums, whistles, 'tok-tok', etc or some can make horns out of coca cola cans, etc. that can really attract attention and allow us to take off without restraint.
3. Vocals Some of you may be good composers and can coin a zippy tune with catchy lyrics, easy to learn and memorise. This is to provide variety. Or you may be able to come out with a short BF song, recorded with piano or guitar accompaniment which we can learn and reproduce on the spot. :D
4. Dressing & Headgears This is holiday time for most students. Christmas is around the corner. Dress to Kill, man. Let loose! Make your own costume. Decorate yourself with colours. How about a headgear made in the shape of a shuttlecock, or one with net and real birds? Or make a dress which you always dream about and create fashion at the SIS! We should have a badminton fashion competition on this and each of us has to appear in our own creations for the Finals! :)
5. A Friendly Game among ourselves: Maybe tama-aki can be the co-ordinator for this on Sat morning, 20 Nov. I don't expect matches in the morning for the semi-finals, probably in the afternoon. Then Kwun and Janet can also join us, together with 3 other BFers from Brisbane and NZ for whom I have booked season tickets. I'm sure ants from Malaysia would also like to participate. It's perhaps the right time for Singapore and M'sia BFers to meet and get to know one another.
What do you say PoseidonLee, Chinadoll, Nauknip, charade99, Fook90, Spacerooster, hcyong, hdson, zzaarr, ants and all others from here and Malaysia who may be watching the Open? Your friends are welcome to join us especially at the SIS.
Do let me have your suggestions, feedback, etc, asap. We have about 2 weeks to get things organized. :p

Well there's a slight problem. I finish my last O'level paper on that friday itself 19th of November. Next problem is that we're kinda tight on money as we're migrating to Australia on the 1st of December. If it wasn't for the exams and the migration probably I'd stand a good chance of going :D . But now probably not.
I would also feel bad asking mom to fork out cash just to go and stuff. You know that feeling.
Anyways I'll see, probably who knows? After that last paper I could probably be flying to Singapore on the evening flight?? :D :D . Anything can happen right.
Edit Bit : If I want to pay for my own, I'd have to get SGD$500 and also extra $$$ for the hotel and stuff. Probably next year or something, but it's a shame to miss it. When I start making my own $$$, then I'll fly over :D

Not sure what I can contribute to the newly wed, I propose providing free Singapore Open 2004(I am sure it will be on Astro Malaysia) DVDs(not including shipping ;-)) to those who show up along with Kwun/Janet at the Open. You face need to be shown on TV or provide your names and address to Kwun when you meet him in Singapore(I hope Kwun don't mind taking down the names? Check out www.sistic.com.sg and look for the Singapore Open event. But you need a credit card to purchase the tickets. There are plenty of tickets left. You can pick up the tickets at the stadium. Alternatively, anyone here in Singapore (like me) can help purchase the tickets.

Objective: To create a lot of noise and fun and publicise our BF image.
How to achieve our aims:
Very ambitious, Loh!! Unfortunately, I am not artistic enough to do any of the things except (5) a BF.com badminton session. Does the website have some T-shirts or something? We can all buy the T-shirts from kwun, then all wear the same T-shirts and sit together, and make a lot of noise.
Loh's the man!

we need volunteers who'll get to the stadium early! it won't be a problem for QF/SF, finals maybe more crowded?
Objective: To create a lot of noise and fun and publicise our BF image.
yes, i think we need to start some loud cheering. if i recall correctly from last year's video, the audience are way too quiet, we need more atmosphere!
did they have thunder sticks last year? if not, we can bring along old shuttle tubes and bang them together. the louder the better!

i like all of Loh's idea. getting a game would be nice too. i know the singapore badminton hall is close by, do they have courts for rent?
let's give Loh a hand and throw in some ideas and support!
also if you have been there last year, give us an idea how things are setup so we can plan accordingly.

yes! how can i forget? i still have around 150 BC t-shirts i have been wanting to sell but never got round to it. this will be a great time to do it. i can deliver them to the stadium. they will be US$10 each. i will post a separate thread on this.

Hi FEND
What a surprise! Obviously you make a great diplomat being able to persuade your mom despite all the obstacles you've mentioned. Your mom must have also considered the SO as a reward for your expected good results for your 'O' Levels and the impending migration to Down Under, which is farther away. :)
I've PM you on the tickets and now await your reply. Hope you have arranged for flights and accommodation. We're all looking forward to seeing you and your friend!
I think there is no fear of not being able to get tickets as the SIS is a big stadium and as far as I can recall, it has never been filled to the brim! There is also a Sistic (ticket sales) outlet at the SIS itself, near to right end of the building, beside the escalator.
I was hoping that you can watch the quarter-finals as well if you can arrive on Friday, 19 Nov, in time for the matches, starting at 3 pm. For those who are attending, a reminder of the dates and times are as follows (can be obtained at the Aviva website although I contacted the SBA for the info):
Mon 15 - No matches.
Tue 16 - Qualifying Rounds, 9 am; 2 pm.
Wed 17 - 9 am; 1.30 pm; 6 pm.
Thu 18 - 9 am; 1.30 pm; 6 pm.
Fri 19 - Quarter Finals 3 pm.
Sat 20 - Semi-Finals 2 pm.
Sun 21 - Finals 1 pm.
Do note the earlier times for QF. SF and F. Will continue to keep in touch.

Han,
Thank you in advance for your generous offer on behalf of all BFers who will show up at the Singapore Open.
Be prepared to break your bank account but please don't set too difficult conditions like we have to appear on TV before we are eligible for your tape or disc. Much as we like our faces and the BF name to be telecast live, we need to do a lot to attract the attention of the cameras as you can understand.
So guys, if you want a sample of Han's great work, please chip in. stay together as a BF group at the SIS. make an impact and hopefully we can find a strategic location so that the cameras can never miss us! :D

Not to worry, at least you participate in other ways as you've indicated and more importantly, you are going to wear the BC shirt at the Finals.
Wonder how many of you watched the Singapore Idol on TV last night. Did you see the bold and colourful artistic work (flash cards, etc) being raised high up with bare hands and the audience shouting away in joyous abandonment? I think this should be the kind of atmosphere we should emulate to make ourselves seen and heard at the SIS.
Don't feel inhibited especially when we are in a group. Do remember we can generate confidence and courage among ourselves! And because of this we can really enjoy ourselves! :)
So the Singapore Soloso is not playing ya?
And this event is not shown on TV i suppose.
Hi Bieffe
Yes, Ronald Susilo and Li Li will not be able to play because of illness and injuries as reported earlier. Like you, we are absolutely disappointed but hope that they can recover in time for training and preparation for the SEA Games. But, not to worry, we can be assured of world-class badminton as I believe many of the top-players, particularly the women, will show up after the China Open as a matter of convenience before they return home.
The Singapore Open is a 5-star international which is highly prized!
So, you can also expect TV coverage, especially during the SF and F.
The main sponsors, Aviva, has invested a lot of money to ensure its success. :)

Maybe, if you want to get rid of the shirts fast, sell them at $10 each, but in Singapore Dollars! :D Then you don't have to change too many Singapore Dollars here, or at least Janet (and your mom) will be very happy using the spare cash for their shopping spree at Raffles City itself. Robinson's is a good place to shop and others as well, and they are just at your hotel's doorsteps.

i have M all the way to 2XL...
ok. i have decided to sell them at SGD15 each (US$9). that's cheaper than normal price (US$10) and it includes delivery fee to SIS. save you guys a lot of $$ already.
if you want one, send me a PM with the size and quantity. i need to get payment (via Paypal) so i know how many to bring. unfortunately, i won't be able to bring extras so only paid ones will be delivered.

yet to be decided, but probably in Swissotel as my mom is coming along with us.

i dont' mind collecting names. i agree, to get spotted on TV is firstly difficult, and secondly hard to verify. if i collect a list of usernames that will be more reliable. so come look for me when you come to the Singapore Open. i will pass the list to Han afterwards.

The 3 season tickets I have on hand (for Kong-19 and explorer123) are meant for the North entrance. I have still not collected some more tickets yet. But it is free seating for all, so we can go earlier to reserve or block out our seats by using our bags, programs, etc, etc., the more of us showing up earlier the better.
It is therefore very useful to know in advance how many will be able to make it on the five days from 17 - 21 Nov, so that we can plan the time and place to meet before entering the stadium and choosing a strategic location for the group.
For general information, you can contact me on my handphone 91790791, esp when you are late and try to locate our group in the SIS. ;)
Hi zzaarr,
Nice pictures you've got there, particularly of JR. Can you suggest a good place in the SIS for our group to be located, bearing in mind that we have to be clearly visible to the TV cameras for them to shoot us if we are good enough for them! :D You bet we will be cheering very loudly for JR and his partner Lars! :p
Don't forget to bring your camera again, although the 'no flash' rule will surely apply. Can we count you in the BC group? :)

If you want to appear on TV, need to sit in the first few rows right behind the competion court in the center location.
Usually these seats will be reserved by the organisers for their cheers leaders group, unless Loh can make some arrangement with the organisers to reserve those seat:)
I find that these seats are a bit too close to the court to get a good view of the action, hence sit somewhere in the center location and a few row at the higher platform actually gives a better bird-eye view of the play. Of cause sitting further back cannot see the players face clearly:)
A note, kwan those empty seats on the opposite side are reserved for VIP, officials and players, unless BCer can get a special pass (maybe with the help from JR *hint hint* we can seat over the other side then will get the "perfect" view of the game.

I think you are spot on. Can you be our coordinator for identifying the 'best' location for our BC group for at least the semis and the finals so that we can meet earlier and block off the seats before others. You seem to have a good understanding of the SIS layout and where the cameramen will be located. :)
I think photography should be allowed but no flash which can destract the players.
Yah, PoseidonLee can influence his gang to join us in the cheering. If possible, please bring along your noise making machines and dress in dashing & smashing colours. As I recall Black seems to be your favourite. :D
FEND, I hope your case is settled. Buying the admission ticket from the SIS Sistic counter should be no problem on the day of the matches. Hope you can watch the QF as well as it starts at 3 pm. Do come in fancy hat and dress and with your 'muscial' instrument! :)

Loh, my case hasn't been settled yet as I'm not confirmed yet. Even if I am the earlierst I can make it is the Semis and the Finals. The problem in this respect is that my paper finishes at 5.30 on the 19th of November. And the earliest flight is 7.30 out of Brunei to singapore at night on the same day.
As I'm still not confirmed yet, I cannot make any commitments yet. It is still at 50% chance that I might not go.
Hopefully the other 50% will work it's charm this time around :)

Hi Kwun
Great Idea! yes you're right it only takes one hour from jakarta to singapore by plane...so maybe i can come ....fingers crossed
I find that these seats are a bit too close to the court to get a good view of the action, hence sit somewhere in the center location and a few row at the higher platform actually gives a better bird-eye view of the play. Of cause sitting further back cannot see the players face clearly:)
A note, kwan those empty seats on the opposite side are reserved for VIP, officials and players, unless BCer can get a special pass (maybe with the help from JR *hint hint* we can seat over the other side then will get the "perfect" view of the game.
ah. no wonder they are so empty! what a waste of good seats!
i found during the SC that the best seatings for a badminton match is at the rear corner, right behind the baseline linesman, perferably slightly high up. best perspective of the whole court. the traditional rear camera view isn't very good.
back to the SO. not sure if getting on camera constantly is a high priority. wouldn't mind if the pan to us when we are screaming loudly. i have noticed that the cameramen always zooms in on cute girls, so that's rules me out! ;)

I think you are spot on. Can you be our coordinator for identifying the 'best' location for our BC group for at least the semis and the finals so that we can meet earlier and block off the seats before others. You seem to have a good understanding of the SIS layout and where the cameramen will be located. :) Hi Loh, unfortunately I can't take up the offer :crying: as my timing will be irregular, if I can be there early will try to "chop" (reserved) some seats.
Pls note we also cannot hold on to the seats for too long as there will be ushers in the SIS to "clear" those "chop" seats if the people still don't turn up for some period.

Welcome "Pink Panther"! We very much look forward to seeing you. :p Remember your countrymen, esp the ladies, will be competing and maybe you can make some arrangement with them. You may even be able to convince your bosses about covering the Finals, if Taufik Hidayat or Candra & Sigit are appearing, and earn a free trip! ;)
Be seeing you at least during the Finals, which starts at 1 pm. You may be able to fly in during the morning and leave at night and still be back in Jakarta the same day. :)

You can call me on my handphone when you're there at the SIS. We are still in the midst of planning the details like where to meet in advance and what sort of identification we should present inside the stadium. I'm still waiting for more feedback and confirmation of attendance.
Look out for more details. :)

I just wonder where could we get these drums which the Malaysian or Indonesian supporters use ? During last year's semi-finals, there was a Malaysian crowd which were using them and creating lots of noise.
They also brought along a Malaysian flag. I wonder where I can get one or an Indonesian flag in Singapore ?

Hi Bieffe
The Singapore Open is a 5-star international which is highly prized!
So, you can also expect TV coverage, especially during the SF and F.
The main sponsors, Aviva, has invested a lot of money to ensure its success. :)
Yeah, there will be some TV coverage for news etc etc. But such prestigious event in Singapore isn't anything big on tv too. Still news on soccer from Europe dominates the news :(
No match will be shown live on tv. There's no such history in Singapore, at least not during my living here for years. None in free-to-air channels, not even after paying sports channel on cable tv :(

I'm sure the organisers must have learned their lesson and not allow the big mistake to repeat. Being a diehard, I'll most probably stay till the end but for those who travel by public transport they need to watch the time.
Well I did bring my then newly-acquired Nikon digital camera to capture as many players' faces as possible. And I have posted some pictures of myself in this Forum before.
For the benefit of those who may have missed my face, I post a pic again with our young friend from Malaysia, ants, who unfortunately will not be able to join us as he said he will have to attend his good friend's wedding as best man in the Philippines.
I think we need to know how kwun and Janet look like and perhaps he could oblige by posting their long-awaited "wedding photo" here for the first time. :D

As I have suggested earlier, during the National Day celebrations at the National Stadium, the goodie bag included some noise making gadgets like the hand drum with a stick to hit on it, rattlers which you can whirl round and round, a sealed coca cola can with sand in it, etc. They can produce delightful sounds. At one of the Malaysian Opens, I was given a can which was ingeniously converted into a horn which can be blown to create a loud sound in different notes, depending on the artistry of the blower. If only some of you can make this horn, which has two compartments, one for a rubber-like membrane sealed at one end and the other for a hole (mouthpiece) to blow into, and bring it along.
At the last Singapore Open, many plastic hand-held flags were given out at the door. I still have the national flags of China, Denmark, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore. I hope they continue to give these out as freebies so that we can wave them wildly. :D
Pink Panther??? hmm..cool name :D

Yes, I just thought this fun-loving member of the feline family might just be as cool and collected as your Cheshire Cat! And its got a lovely pink colour to match! :D Hope you know the tune of PP too! It is just plain lively and zappy and full of suspense!

After lots of thinking, I decided to save the SGD$1000 which would have been used for the trip in airtickets / accomodation / food etc etc, since I'm moving to Australia.
So, anyways I'll catch it on TV and msg you guys when I see your faces on TV. Get a banner in. I'm sure you guys will get the camera's attention.
All the best.
Btw part of the SGD$1000 is going to be used by me to get a stringing machine in australia. Once that machine helps me recoup I'll be sure to fly down in the near future. :D :D
Enjoy the event.

Take a Singapore flag, and colour the moon and the stars red. Or get a Polish flag. Or get a really huge US or Malaysian flag, and cut a red and white strip from it.

Hi kwun & BFers gathering at the SO,
I just received a call from a "crafty old folk" from Brisbane, a Malaysian from Sabah, who will be coming over on 13th right through 21st, to watch the SO. He knows that kwun will be here and he promised to bring a "very, very unique and special gift" for him. He was sure kwum will fall head over heels when he sees it.
I ask this new-found friend whether he can bring 'something' for our other BFers gathered at the SO and he said he will try his level best.
Our friend from Brisbane just played a number of friendly matches at the Gold Coast Masters and he came to know someone in his 40's who is directly involved in the badminton industry in China. So make your guesses.
And kwun, make sure you show up in good time so as not to dissappoint our man from Down Under!

By the way guys, I have contacted the SBA whether we could rent their courts on Sat, 20 Nov for our badminton bash. Unfortunately, he told me that Sat mornings are for National Team training. :( :crying: :crying:
Wonder who can help to book at least two courts for two hours each from any of the CC Sports Halls for that particular morning, preferable from 9 or 10 am. Please HELP so that all BFers in Singapore can meet together to have some fun games! PM me if necessary!
I'm so sad to note from the Poll that as of now, 24 BFers can't join us for whatever reasons and this number is more than those who have confirmed their attendance.
If you are from Singapore, you should try your best to watch the Singapore Open live. We can be assured of top-class rivalry and the skills and tactics of the players are certainly way above what we normally see. Watching live is very different from just watching TV. The atmosphere is completely different and this time round it is our turn, the BC.com group, which will be creating the scenes at the SIS. May i video cam the show?? Free BC t-shirt?? WEEE hell yes!!!
I called Stephanie from the SSC to tell her that we should have at least 30 BFers attending the semi-finals and finals at the Aviva Open Singapore 2004.
Last Wed, she called me to inquire whether we needed any help. I made my requests and she confirmed the following just now:
1. She has booked Bedok Sports Hall for our Fun Games on Sat, 20 Nov. It will be 2 courts for 2 hours each from 10 am to 12 pm.
2. She will instruct the reception at the North Entrance of the SIS to allow us to collect the fun making items: flags of China, M'sia, S. Korea, Indonesia and S'pore, party horns and "Team Singapore" clatters.
3. She will allocate for the 'BadmintonCentral.com' group a block of seats at the East Entrance close to the action.
4. If we wish to bring in our own banner, there is no objection. We need to sort this out ourselves. Any body got any ideas apart from my 'flash card' suggestion?
So, guys, those of you who are supporting us as a group at the SIS will be in for a great time. And with Kwun and Han dishing out extra freebies, what more can you ask for? Sign Up NOW to avoid disappointment! :D :D :D
aside from SSC, everybody should thank Loh and whoever nominated Loh as the organizer! :)
shame to confess that i have not made the BC banner. and i won't be able to do it before i leave on saturday. i wonder if anybody in Singapore can help out to make one for us. if it incur cost to do it, BC will pay for it. that's not a problem. (do try to keep the cost down though... ;) )
i do have other good news. i am getting a media pass for the event and i will be able to get close to the court to take pictures as well as to press conferences. as a result, i will be able to supply more news and lots of pictures for everybody to read and see. this is very cool indeed.

Just in case Eva decides to come on her own, without the knowledge of her boss(es). ;) It's getting far too exciting for her to remain in Jarkarta when it's barely an hour's flight, sans customs hitches.

Try to make sure the group are sitting opposite the main cameras. Otherwise we won't get any good views of everybody!
Live scoring here from me. So don't worry :D
Thanks again, my young friend. But don't get too excited and give the wrong scores! Would love you to join us here LIVE though! :D
Ooh.... I wish i could go...:crying: I've got A-levels exam here until 1st dec. I'm so near... Some more I have some close frens n relatives there. I would have no problem if not because of the exam. Enjoy ur trip!:(
Can't you just sneak out and join us having fun, especially on Sat and Sun afternoons when you have no exams. More so if you live just across the causeway in JB. :p
Explorer123 (Kit) and wife, Fiona, arrived late Friday evening from Christchurch, NZ and Kong-19 (Chan) from Brisbane, Australia, touched down early Sat morning, all geared up to watch the Aviva Open Singapore 2004 and to play as many badminton games as possible. They all bought early bird season passes.
Kit and Fiona was unable to join me for my usual sessions with my Sunday group, but Chan came by to join us at Bukit Gombak Sports Hall from 4-7 pm. Two other BFers were also with us, Davidoff2005 and Mongoose.
The following pic shows from L to R, yours truly, Davidoff2005, Chan and Mongoose. Do expect more pics when Kwun comes along with his new digital camera. :)

I've been to a number of such events in Singapore and normally, it's camera allowed but no flash, please. However, camera flashes remain a big problem due to a number of idiots. So maybe, this time they will be strict.

I think it's crazy to ban cameras!!! We are there to support our fav players leh! And being fans, fans will always want to take some photos mah!If they really ban camera, next yr I will boycott the event!
And as for the yonex discount booth there, has some reservation abt it, last yr the booth was offering a 15-20% discount off retail price ... and still much more expensive than bras basah!!! So ... those who want to buy rackets can just make a trip over to bras basah during the lunch break!! :)
Glad to confirm that I will be there for at least 4 days, 18-21 nov! 17th very likely also unless work commitment cannot allow me to take leave. Will be there with some of the ebadminton kakis! :)

Spotted some Hong Kong players helping themselves to our local food at Marine Parade Hawker Centre last night. Realised they were badminton players as one of the players was wearing a yonex polo with the name "Wong M C, Hong Kong" on her back. Was quite amused at the amount of food they ordered  I thought professional badminton players had strict diets :)
Does anybody know which is the designated official hotel for all players? Would love to catch a glimpse of my favourite players and get their autographs :D

Guys,
Far from Belgium I wish you to have a nice trip and a nice weekend in SIS.
Very sad :crying: and jealous that I can't joint you in SO. It's very far from here and have no plan back to INA (South East Asia) this year, maybe next year.
Anyway, I hope someday we can also do the same meeting as in SIS/SO here in Europe.
Loh....
Good Luck ! You have done, do and will do a great thing for BF.
I cross my fingers and wish you all a success trip (go and back) and an unforgetable weekend in Singapore.

Well guys, not to worry. You can join others to applaud here and there.
Because we are saving our strength and voice for Sat and Sun. Bresis, nice to know that you managed to find your way to the SIS and hope you can join us for our Sat Fun Games as Bedok.
On Sat, we will be in full force with our unique banner (fresh from China) and all our 'barang-barang' (noise makers), sitting in one commanding block at the Eastern section and making all the noise that we want. Then there is no fear not to cheer. This afternoon, Stephanie from the SSC will be at the SIS to show me the exact location.
See you there! :)
