The Singapore Swimming Club again hosted the Masters Invitation Badminton Open Championships for selected clubs this afternoon as a followup to their inaugural tournament last year. Ashaway is the sponsor. SSC will use 4 courts out of 6 in their premises.
Our club, Warren, was invited to compete with the host SSC, Changi Beach Club, Mayflower, SAFSA, Chinese Swimming Club, SIA and Evergreen. This year's categories include 40+, 45+, 50+ and a new event, 55+.
I did not compete in last year's masters as I would not stand a chance against the much younger men players. But this year we decided to join in the 55+ group, although a 60+ category would be more suitable and I was called upon to partner another more elderly senior citizen who is 2 years short of 70. It was all for the fun of participation, so I agreed.
We were lucky to be drawn in a group of 3 teams while the other 55+ group had 4 teams competing on round robin format. The first two teams will qualify for the semi-finals held on Friday. And the match is based on one game of 21 points.
Our first match was against Mayflower and although the last time I combined with my partner was a number of years ago, we managed to beat our younger opponents 21-13. Our team cheered for us for we were the only pair that had won a match, the other three teams were quickly knocked out
in their two matches each earlier. But our second and last match was against the seeded pair from the host club and we lost by a big margin 7-21.
Whilst the teams from the other group will still have a match to play tomorrow to determine the two teams to enter the semi-finals, we have already qualified by winning just one match! :) This is just the luck of the draw. But we will need more than luck to be able to beat the champion of the other group on Friday. :(
