Great News to all visiting BFers to the Singapore Open and to all Singapore BFers!

Jeffreyk, our BFer, has volunteered to book the courts on Sat, 20 Nov for us to enjoy a FUN GAME , to meet, play to our hearts' content, have an early lunch together before adjourning to the SIS to watch the Singapore Open semi-finals, starting at 2 pm., for those who are going.

We have in mind to start at 9 am (to allow more time to those not familiar with the playing venue) and book 2 courts for 2 hours each. But we need to know who is coming for this very, very rare gathering with Kwun and Janet. No matter what your playing standards, we will be able to match you with those present so that we can all enjoy the fun.

So please register here with a few words if you wish, like; "I CAN MAKE IT', or 'COUNT ME IN', etc, etc.

To help Jeffreyk make his bookings, could you kindly register NOW. :D :D :D
Jeffrey said the max he can book is 3 courts and of course, there is no guarantee that he could get them. Let's keep our fingers crossed! :)

Thank you zzaarr for getting the ball rolling! :D

We should expect overseas visitors like Kong-19 (Brisbane), Explorer 123 and wife (NZ), and some of our Malaysian friends to join in. Jeffrey's kakis (buddies in Malay) like PoseidonLee and his gang, will probably be able to make it too. I met Mongoose (?) last Sunday and I think he should be able to support us. To those who want a real good game, Mongoose is the man! Now we can have a big party! :p

Wonder whether Chinadoll, Fook90 and many others can show up too? :)

Good to hear from you. Time really fies and about a year ago during the last SO, remember our friends from Denmark and KL and how the four of us enjoyed ourselves. Wonder how Fourcas is getting on with his badminton?

Look forward to seeing you at the Fun Games and please bring along your BF buddies! :D

Stephanie from the Sports Council has booked the Bedok Sports Hall on Sat, 20 Nov for our BC Fun Games. It was very kind of her to come to our rescue as we can't guarantee that we will be successful booking on our own, as what Jeffreyk has said. Thanks also to Jeffreyk for volunteering! :)

Two courts for 2 hours each, from 10 am - 12 pm have been allotted to us. I hope BFers from Bedok can join us too and those who are not familiar with the place, just like me, will have more time to find out how to get to the venue.

Stephanie will confirm to me by email and I will revert with the details. Meanwhile, please add your name to the list of participants. And remember to be at the Singapore Open semi-finals and finals for all the freebies! :D

Hi mongoose

Wecome back! :D

Thanks for correcting the venue and time - Bedok Sports Hall, 10 am - 12 pm.
Yes, I think Stephanie helped me to choose a venue nearer the SIS. But for the sake of BFers who may not be familiar with BSH, could someone give some easy directions, like how far is it from Bedok MRT and what bus no. to take from there to BSH, if required. How long will it take to WALK? Are there any nearby food centres? I'm NOT familiar with the place too.

Mongoose, how about your usual BF playing kakis? Could you persuade them to join us too? What about the Bedok BFers, if any? Hope you can join us at the SIS for the semis and the finals also!

Thanks and look forward to seeing you. :)

Make sure you take the bus from the right side of the road. After tagging out your ticket/ez-Link, you will go down an escalator. After that, make sure you turn right. Then, you will go up an escalator and the bus-stand is just right there.

If you keep walking straight past the bus-stand, you will reach the Sports Hall (after the Swimming Complex) in at most 15 minutes.

True true, bringing our bags to SO will be awkward!! Maybe go back home first :)

Also, i think maybe need to book 1 more court since there may be too many people since many other people and their friends not listed will also join adhoc most likely, maybe around 25 in all :) Anyway, it's not everyday that such event of this magnitude is organised.

Dear All Fun Games Participants,

Of course, you should do what you think is best and convenient on Sat morning, but do take note of the time, which is quite tight for us. Our schedule for that day is something as follows:

09.45 am - Assembled at Bedok Sports Hall (Registration) Warming up/stretching - An experienced BFer to conduct this. :)

10.00 am - Fun Games starts (a) identify into groups (b) maybe have a knock out competition of 11 points, the winner remains until he is knocked out. (c) Balanced pairings for friendly doubles. The champs meet the runners-up to determine the ultimate champion. We can have two groups. :D These are only suggestions and you can think of others in advance.

12.00 pm - Fun Games over. Those who wish to shower can do so quickly at the Sports Hall. Bring your own toiletries and towels. Those who wish to return home can do so and hope you can make it back to the SIS, Kallang for the SO by 2 pm. If you are late, look out for the BC.Com banner or locate us at the Eastern section. Contact me on my handphone.

12.30 pm - Adjourn to the nearest food centre for a quick lunch (30 - 45 mins).

1.15 pm - Ready to travel to SIS, Kallang. Those who drive can please help to transport some BFers (the very young ones) and others can share a taxi cab which is faster and probably cheaper.

1.45 pm - Reached SIS. Collect freebies from reception. Locate our special block of seats and ascertain how best to project our group with banner, etc., for the cameras, something Cheung has reminded. :D

Therefore, as you can see, our schedule is tight and we have to do things slightly faster on this particular day. ;)

Have requested for an extra court. Some of you can think of something unique and fun for laughs. FEND. - any contribution from you? Do come forward to lead some of these fun games. We are all part of the BC family, therefore we should not be shy but go all out to enjoy ourselves! :)

Hope you are all geared up for the Fun! Don't forget to bring yourself! :D :D :D

Well what kind of fun and games you guys want? I'll give you guys a challenge though, 360 degree spin backhand jumps smash. As in you jump and execute a backhand smash and turn a full 360 degrees.

Any video evidence from you guys will be great :D:D

i talked to Raphael, the official journalist for the IBF and he says he will join this fun games sesssion!

Loh, i have sent you a PM on how to contact him via email.

if we try to persuade him enough, maybe he can bring Pi Hongyan with him for the session... :D that also depends on her availability and schedule.

he does need to borrow a racket, i am sure that's not a problem.

FEND.
11-15-2004, 11:25 PM
You know I can almost bet that if you guys going there combine the number of racquets each one will bring, you guys would outnumber the pros. Seriously. IF bluejeff came, he himself could outnumber all the pros by himself.

wood_22_chuck
11-15-2004, 11:27 PM
Fend, Kwun mentions lovely Pi HongYan, and racket shortage, and you immediately focus in on racket shortage :D

Pot calling kettle black: My first thought, they'd better be a Nanospeed7000 for Raphael, if he brings Pi HongYan along! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

Kai91, sorry to learn that you can't join us, wonder why?

As yesterday's qualifiers were all held in the morning, I was unable to leave my office. BFer, Chan from Brisbane, visited me and we had lunch at Burger King, OUB Centre. Chan had just watched the morning session matches at SBH.

At 5.30 pm I took Chan to a walking tour of some of our tourist attractions around my office at Raffles Place that include Boat Quay, the Fullerton Hotel, the Merlion at Clifford Pier, our two 'Durians' - the Esplanade and thence across the road to Marina South for dinner at the Marina Loft, a new food court on the second level.

Thereafter, we crossed over to Suntec City via City Mall to take the City Hall MRT to Orchard Road. "Christmas is coming, the lights are up at last ... Orchard Road as always, leads the way to a blast!"

It was also baskers' galore. Performers from all over the world converged here to display their skills for charity. I enjoyed the gimmicks and the slapsticks of the clown!

That was how my day ended.

But this afternoon, I'll be at the SIS to watch the day's proceedings. Come Sat, 20 Nov, at 2 pm, you should not miss us as Kwun will be bringing in her mom's special BC.com banner. But alas, you'll not be there either. Perhaps Sunday, the day of the Finals, we'll meet up? Promise? Don't forget it starts at 1 pm!

Some pics for you. The tall circular/cylindrical building is the Swissotel Stamford, where Kwun will most likely be staying.

I will be going to watch the game...but not playing

17 of us met at Bedok to play this historic Fun Games at Bedok, Singapore. But 'where have all the flowers gone', as all who turned up were guys? Guys are certainly more sporting! :D Thank you all for taking time off to support our fun games.

Some were there earlier than 10 am and most were punctual. Heading the list is Kwun from Silicon Valley, California, followed by veteran and stringing specialist, Kong-19, from Brisbane, the ever-fit Explorer123 from Christchurch, NZ, hamz (who adores wearing longs during games) from KL and residents in Singapore, Crazy-smasher (Mauritius), hdson (Hanoi), tama-aki (Indonesia), zzaarr (who packed all 5 in his car), mongoose (who was accompanied by his 'special' friend at the SIS during the semis), Poseidonlee (always wears a :)), hcyong (who led the 'walking team' to the Bedok MRT Food Centre), Jeffreyk (the covenor for Jurong East BFers and who wore a sexy & smimmering silver white Yonex shirt), daviddoff2005 (who hails from Indonesia and likes to partner mongoose), our young ambassadors Kai Unregistered and Terry and of course, yours truly.

Two hours of friendly rivalry with different partners most times, on a rubber coated concrete floor in this multi sports hall were all we had time for. But Chan (Kong-19) suggested that he partnered Kwun the 'pro' against Kit (Explorer) and me. We received a thrashing all right. Then we reversed the order and Chan and Kit were at the receiving end for a change.

Thereafter, some of us showered at the 'open' facility, where no doors for privacy were available. In some other newer sports halls, there are individual shower units.

Then it was straight to Bedok MRT Food Centre for a quick lunch. Daniel (zzaarr) packed the 'foreigners' Kwun, Chan, Kit and Francis (Poseidonlee) into his reliable car, whilst Yong (hcyong) led the rest on a walking trip to the MRT. I rode on my trusty scooter.

We managed to take a group photo with Kwun's mon's BC.com banner and at the SIS we also had the goodie bags and caught glimpses of Kwun, Janet and mom at the far end of the stadium.

Hope you like the following pics :) : (More to come after the SO Finals today)

thank you everybody who showed up to the fun games. especially the ones who came from far away countries and far away districts in Singapore. i hope everyone had fun, i certainly did and we couldn't resist the "one last game" temptation with only 15mins spare in the clock.

the shower was very refreshing afterwards considering the sweltering heat and humidity in the sports hall.

and also thank you those who offered us a ride to the local hawker center. i enjoyed the dish of char kwey teow, although i must say the rojak doesn't quite align with my taste buds. ;)

To put the names to the faces for the Group pic with the BC Banner:

Back Row: Kai, Hamz, Loh, kwun, Kong-19, daviddoff2005, Poseidonlee, crazy-smasher, mongoose, zzaarr and hcyong.

Front Row: Explorer123, tama-aki, Jeffreyk, Terry, Unregistered and hdson.

(Incidentally, at the end of the SO Finals, Poseidonlee's name was drawn as the lucky winner of a return trip to China.)

After our Fun Games at Bedok Sports Hall, we collected our Goodie Bags from the Sports Council. As show in the pic, these comprise of:

2 clappers (balloon sticks), 2 party horns, 4 flags, 1 clipboard and 1 wind breaker (jacket).

Naturally, we have to thank Stephanie of the SSC for arranging the courts bookings at Bedok SH (FOC) and for the goodie bags.

Did Kwun use Mandarian to communicate with Chen Hong & Gao Ling?

As I took the pic from 'faraway', I couldn't hear what kwun said, whether in Cantonese, Mandarin or 'English'. I have to say it must be Mandarin, since neither Chen nor Gao is from Guandong or HK and although learning English is now a craze in China to prepare the country for the next Olympics as host, I doubt the couple could master language in such a short time to understand kwun. Kwun has an official pass and was able to join Chen Hong and Gao Ling at the players' section. Nevertheless, he must be very persuasive for he 'sold' his shirt rather quickly to the loving couple. :)

i was very nervous when i went up to talk to Chen/Gao. i think they were a bit startled by some guy suddenly sat besides them and shook their hands, interrupting their quiet time together. i tried a mixture of my broken mandarin but eventually resorted to cantonese. i actually gave them 4 shirts, 2 more to give to Huang Sui and Xia Xuanze.

they asked me what the shirt is for and i told them it is for a website in the US.

Chen Hong received the shirts and said "Dor Cher" back to me in cantonese!

Hehe! Really had a very great week! Watch 5 days of fantastic badminton, took photograhs or stars and one with my fav zhao ting ting, meet up friends from the forum and to top it up, win the 2 tickets to chengdu!! hahaha! Thks to all the friends in the forum and also my kakis from Ebadminton who made my week! :)

Loh, thks for the great effort for organising! And really nice to meet Kwun and the rest of the BFers! :)

Also took some photographs, but not professional like kwun using D70, I only has my Sony 828 ... realise that at fast shutter, low lights and at ISO 800 settings, the noise seems terrible, maybe I should switch over to DSLR also since the price is quite near! Will post some of the nicer ones after I sort it out too.

Kwun, it's ok to be nervous, me too when I went over to zhao ting ting & chen QQ for the photo, hands were shaking when I help jeffreykoh take one with them ... lucky the photo were not blur.haha!

Dave, as you know, we had little time left. So as suggested by Daniel (zzaarr), we all adjourned to the nearby Bedok Food Centre, a typical public housing estate centre that has many hawker stalls selling a great variety of food. Kwun, as he has disclosed, joined others to take char kway teow, Singapore style, quite different from the Malaysian varities and probably had sugar cane juice for drinks.

After the quarter finals, kwun, chan and I went to the Old Airport Food Centre, which is located near to the SIS, for dinner. There we ate satay and small oysters fried in flour.

And yesterday evening, after the Finals, Chan and I went back to Old Airport Road and patronized the relatively new food court adjacent to the old food centre. Chan ordered his favourite fish head curry (which he had on the first day he joined me to play a Bukit Gombak Sports Hall) and chilly crab (which he has not tasted before) and a bottle of Calsberg beer. He made sure he enjoyed his last dinner in Singapore before he departs for KL this morning.

Here are other pics taken at Bedok Food Centre, with Kit, Kwun, Chan, Mongoose and David at the same table. And some more pics with Kwun and others in action during the Fun Games.

Special thanks to BF'ers who assisted with your contribution of shuttles, for sharing your knowledge, your transport and for your patience, co-operation and understanding. Who do u think was the "best" player at the BC fun games?

Since there was no official mini tournament at the games as originally planned , hehe, just some comments :)

1. Kwun has a nice whippy backhand clear, haha!!! wish i had one as good as his :) he also has an accurate crosscourt drop shot

2. explorer123 is one very fit all-rounded player, as Loh mentioned

3. Jeffreyk, hcyong, zzarr, daviddoff are all power players

4. Mongoose is more of a finesse player

5. Poseidonlee has a deadly swift crosscourt smash return

6. Loh and the rest, i never got to really see much coz i was playing at that time.

7. Crazy_smasher is not a crazy smasher :)

Perhaps it'll be fairer if the pros are paired up with the amateurs for a less lop-sided match.

Actually for 'super-bye' King 'Alfred', he gets a bye in Round 1, and a 'technical' bye in Round 2 because his opponent has to concede a walkover
fearing for his life should he accidentally eliminate the King while crossing sword with him! :p

Hearken, hearken, the king is speaketh! And the people in the office were wondering at what I was laughing about... :D

Perhaps a normal tourney of both singles and doubles, the champions will get a chance to play with the resident pros. Example:

2* Cheung (BC HK) / S* Thomas Laybourn (IBF) vs 1* Mag (BC Swe) *S Jonas Rasmussen (IBF)

It'll be a cracking match! :)

1* Winex West Can / Loh (BC Can / BC Sin) vs S* Thomas Laybourn/Jonas Rasmussen (IBF)

As long as Thomas & Jonas doesn't play more than 50% of their capabilities, I think WWC and Loh will have a great chance of taking a set! :)

That's how they normally do it during those novelty gatherings etc, to balance out and to have more fun.

Well, we truly had a BC Inter-Continental Competition during our Fun Games at Bedok on the 20th. This is another first for Singapore BF'ers! :p

The 'unofficial' representatives were:

Kwun (BC USA)
Explorer 123 or Kit (BC New Zealand)
Kong-99 or Chan (BC Australia)
Loh (BC Singapore)

Round 1: USA/Australia beat New Zealand/Singapore
Round 2: USA/Singapore beat Aust/New Zealand

(I shall not recount the scores for obvious reasons, but it was a one-game match with 15 points. )

The pairings were fair as the not-so-young were paired with the two veterans. Inevitably, the older the combined ages of the participants, the more likelihood that they'll lose! )

Quite naturally, the youngest man on court, Kwun, emerged with the best result, winning two matches. Unfortunately, the second youngest, Kit, who gave away almost 10 years to Kwun, had to suffer the indignity of two defeats. The two veterans, each twice the age of Kwun, were spared with one defeat and one win. ;)

So, King Alfred, you need to take these matches into account when awarding a seeding to Kwun. :D

Had time permitted, we could have involved Malaysia (Hamz), Indonesia (Tama-aki) and Vietnam (hdson) and the other Singapore BFers. Of course, if FEND. was with us, he will have to represent Brunei, not Malaysia. Now, that would really be fun! ;)

Now, that would really be fun! ;)
I would be representing Australia if there were future bcentral matches as I'm officially moving tomorrow. As of typing this, my clothes are packed, my PC is packed. (this is dad's one) and my racquets offcourse are packed ( 1x Carlton Aerogear 18, 1 x Carlton Boron Classic, 1 x Cab8600light, 1 x Cab30Ms, 1 x MP 23 , 2 x Boron-2) :)

I think the better way is to have Thomas and Jonas share one old racquet (squash) between the two of them. :D :D Now, that's handicap!!!

We should do zone preliminarys like the TC/UC with each continent sending their best :D

Good luck with the move and the transition. Australia ain't too bad as it is still closer to Brunei than Canada. I've not been home since 1984!!

So you are really going? Australia's gain but Malaysia's loss! And you are really serious, bringing along your 7 rackets. It may be to your detriment for not being able to decide which of these to use in an important tournament.

What a loyal BFer you are! Even on the eve of your departure, you still resort to your Dad's PC to communicate with us. Kwun should give you a special gift for this! ;)

Bon voyage! But we'll soon see your writings again, maybe the moment you stepped on Australian soil. :D
